Malahide Golf Club FORE! Magazine - May 2011 MICHAEL CRADDOCK – RIP MICHAEL CRADDOCK COURSE REPORT/ SWANS CLUBS TIP FROM THE PRO/ GOLF RULE INTERCLUB COMPETITIONS/ JUVENILE NEWS OTHER NEWS/ SOCIAL CALENDER PHOTO GALLERY/ RECIPE Michael (Mick) Craddock (Malahide) died on Saturday 2nd April 2011. Born in 1935, he was one of the Craddock brothers whose impact on golf in these Islands was immense. The Craddock families are synonymous with golf in Dublin, Leinster, Ireland and beyond. Mick contributed so much to both the fabric and history of Malahide Golf Club. In 1952 he won the Leinster Boys’ Championship. He became a full member of Malahide Golf Club in 1956. In the same year he achieved a distinction probably unique in Irish Golf. In July 1956 playing off two, he won the Captain’s prize of Harry Thornberry, setting a new course record twice, in the process. In the 45 Hole Captain’s prize, he had two rounds of 70 which constituted a new course record given that the eight tee had been moved back by 40 yards. In 1954 Mick and Tom Craddock competed in the Irish Amateur Open Championships at Royal Dublin. In 1956 he got his first interprovincial cap with Leinster along with his brother Tom. In 1957 he won his second captain’s prize and made the Leinster team for a second year in a row. He also reached the semi-final of the Irish Amateur Open Championship at Royal Portrush. In 1959, when he was only 23 years old he announced his retirement from Golf due to a soccer injury which caused serious cartilage damage to his left knee. He missed the triumphant Malahide Senior Cup team of 1965 because of this injury. The break of a few years from active sport helped his knee considerably and Mick found that he could ease his way back to top-level golf. In 1966 he rejoined Malahide golf club and was back in the Leinster team, which shared the interprovincial Championship title with Munster at Royal Co. Down that year. Mick enjoyed numerous successes on the scratch cup circuit with wins at Tuam, Hermitage and Roscrea. One of his most notable victories came at the inaugural St Anne’s scratch cup in 1971 beating a very strong field that included Joe Carr, Bernard Rogers and sinking the putt to beat Oliver Gough on the 18th green. He was capped five times for Leinster in 1956, 1957, 1966, 1967 and 1970 playing a total of 27 matches. In the late 1970s, Mick became increasingly interested in MALAHIDE GOLF CLUB NEWSLETTER - PAGE 1 MICHAEL CRADDOCK - RIP golf administration though he remained an active competitor. He served on numerous committees in Malahide Golf Club before moving on to the Leinster branch of the GUI. He was part of the triumphant Malahide Barton Shield winning teams of 1971, 1978 and 1982 along with the Barton Cup winning team of 1981. His involvement in the Leinster branch paved the way for him becoming non-playing captain of the Leinster team, which he led to victory in the interprovincial championships of 1981. He became a selector for the Irish team before taking on the honour of Irish team captain at the turn of the millennium. Mick served his beloved Malahide Golf Club as Captain in 1983 and President in 1997 and one of his fondest times was when he was giving his weekly clinics to the Juveniles on the old course. Many sons and daughters of members got their start in golf from Mick. May he rest in peace. SWANS ON OUR COURSE 3 RD HOLE ON THE BLUE COURSE Look, see and admire the nest in the lake as you walk to the 3rd green on the Blue course. The nest consists of a large pile of vegetation including old reeds. A nest can be up to 4 meters (15ft) in diameter. The chalky greenish-blue eggs are laid at intervals of 48 hours & a clutch averages 5 to 6 eggs. Incubation can last 35 to 41 days with the Pen doing most of the sitting. So we look forward to the arrival of cygnets by mid- May. Over the last few years another pair of Swans on the lake at the 5th hole on the Yellow course have attempted to build a nest and lay some eggs but to no avail. It seems that this will be a successful year for them too. By Kathleen Murphy COURSE REPORT Following very poor growth on the fairways a major reappraisal has taken place regarding the level of fertilizer applied. Best practices on other courses were examined with a view to achieving higher standards. A temperature controlled, slow release fertilizer has been applied to all fairways. This product has a 27% portion quick start so that improvement should be evident within 14 days of application. If the results are as envisaged a further application will be applied in the Autumn. This should carry the fairways through the Winter months and eliminate our problem of poor levels of grass growth. Three new Lifebelts have been acquired and sited between the ponds on 1st and 9th Red, back left of pond on 2nd Red and between ponds on 5th and 7th Red. Hopefully they won’t have to be used but it’s good to know their position in case of an emergency. From a security point of view the waste bin should not be used to keep the course toilet door open as unauthorised access can easily be gained to the machine shed. Please use the code and close door after visit. Next Winter the right side of the avenue will be planted with Laurel hedging to give a more uniform approach. Spring bulbs can then be planted which should enhance the overall appearance. Brian Howlett Course Convenor April 2011. MALAHIDE GOLF CLUB NEWSLETTER - PAGE 2 CLUBS Malahide Golf Club Singers & Choir Other Competition News Wed March 2nd 2011 saw the first performance of the Malahide Golf Club Singers. It was a very enjoyable evening with a diverse programme of songs ranging from musical theatre, South Pacific and Joseph, to the Beach Boys and Abba. We came together in November 2010 and are made up of experienced choral singers and beginners alike. Our aim is to bring some light entertainment to our Club. We are a fun loving but hard working group and we are open to everyone. Look out for the dates of our next performance at the end of May. l l l Paula Costello won the Doreen Stafford Salver. Malahide, represented by Ciara Smith and Mary Rock beat Ashbourne 2 up on the 18th in the 2nd round of the Irish Mail All Ireland Fourball Trophy 2011. Unfortunately the Island beat them in the 3rd round of the competition. Lily Owens won the Captain’s Prize and Golfer of the Year Award at the Leinster Alliance in Woodbrook Golf Club. Colette Moran. Snooker Club Unfortunately Malahide failed to qualify for the semi-finals of the North Dublin Snooker League this year. The qualifiers included Clontarf, Howth, Balbriggan and Donabate with Clontarf defeating Howth and Donabate seeing off Balbriggan both on a 3-2 score-line. The final, which was held in Howth Golf Club, was a nail-biting affair with Clontarf finally overcoming a gallant Donabate side in the final frame to take the title. Congratulations to Clontarf on their success but, hopefully, with some new blood, Malahide will be in a much stronger position to contest for the honour next year. If anyone is interested in representing the club on the green baize, please contact Alan Reilly on 087-2346059 or Tommy Rusk on 085-1740777 Tommy Rusk. Bridge Club The 29th Annual General Meeting of the Malahide Golf Club Bridge Club took place on Monday 11th April 2011, followed by Dinner and Presentation of prizes. Our club President, Kevin Goss attended with his wife Denise and presented the winner of the President’s Prize, Donal Hughes, with a rescue club. The President presented 18 beautiful prizes to the other lucky winners of this competition. Mary Kennedy presented her prize, a beautiful painting of the 9th hole on the yellow, painted by artist Sile O'Donovan, to the winner Bernadette Mulcahy. A further 18 prizes were presented in this competition to very appreciative winners, followed by an Easter raffle which insured everybody went home with something! A 'mini' version of the club choir entertained and a great night was had by all. The Bridge season will recommence in September 2011 with Michael Walsh as incoming Captain. Sile O’Donovan & Mary Stanley standing under the cherry blossom tree on the 1st on the Red course during the Irish Mixed Foursomes Match between Malahide & Balcarrick on Sat 16th April 11. Mary Kennedy Poker Club Poker takes place every Tuesday at 8 pm in Malahide Golf club and is as popular as ever. We have at least 25 Lady members. Poker will continue throughout the summer months. All are welcome including beginners. Anne O’Neill MALAHIDE GOLF CLUB NEWSLETTER - PAGE 3 TIP FROM THE PRO JOHN MURRAY The Chip & Run shot, a shot that the Professionals use, as Charl Schwartzel proved on the 1st hole at the 2011 Masters. Here are Six Steps you need to do to improve your CHIP & RUN PLAY. 1 4 With regards to the swing, imagine using your putter, ie. No wrist action, just swing shoulder only in a pendulum motion The Club of choice for this shot is a 7 iron. 2 5 The first thing that has to be adjusted is the grip, here we move our hands down the grip almost to the end. 3 On follow through the left arm is straight no wrist action, weight on left foot and head still. 6 Taking the time to set up for this shot is crucial. Here you can see a narrow stance played from right foot, hands forward, weight 70% on the left MALAHIDE GOLF CLUB NEWSLETTER - PAGE 4 Your successful result in action. RULE 24 OBSTRUCTIONS RELIEF FROM IMMOVABLE OBSTRUCTIONS: Rule 24-2 OBSTRUCTIONS: There are two types of obstructions, movable and immovable. An obstruction is anything that's artificial and includes cart paths, roads, rakes and basically anything put on the course by Man rather than nature. An artificial object that can be moved without unreasonable effort, without undue delay, and without damaging the course is considered a movable obstruction. Artificial objects that cannot be moved without unreasonable effort, without undue delay, and without damaging the course are considered immovable obstructions. NOT OBSTRUCTIONS: The following are not considered obstructions: (i) Walls, fences, stakes, and other objects that define out of bounds. (ii) An immovable obstruction or part of the immovable obstruction that is out of bounds. (iii) any object or construction deemed by the Committee to be an integral part of the golf course. (iv) a leaf or twig are not obstructions as they are natural objects and are therefore considered loose impediments. RELIEF FROM MOVABLE OBSTRUCTIONS: Rule 24-1 (i) A player may move a movable obstruction, if the ball moves in the process; it must be replaced without penalty. (ii) If the player's ball comes to rest in or on a movable obstruction, without penalty the ball may be lifted, the obstruction removed, and the ball dropped (placed on the putting green) as near as possible to the spot directly underneath the place where the ball lay in or on the movable obstruction but no nearer the hole. NOTE--if the ball to be placed or dropped is not immediately recoverable, the player can substitute another ball. NOTE--other than equipment of the players and an attended flagstick, no other obstruction may be removed that might influence the movement of the ball while it's in motion. First of all interference from an immovable obstruction occurs if a ball lies in or on an immovable obstruction. Interference also exists if the obstruction is so close to the ball it interferes with the player's stance or area of intended swing. NOTE-interference exists on the putting green if the obstruction intervenes on the player's line of putt. Intervention of line of play through the green does not constitute interference. (i) Through The Green (is the whole area of the course except the teeing ground and the putting green of the hole being played and all hazards on the course) -without penalty, the player must find the spot on the course nearest to where the ball lies, it's determined by (a) no nearer the hole, (b) avoids the interference for which relief is being taken, (c) the spot is not in a hazard or on the putting green. The player must lift the ball and drop within one club-length of the spot determined by the criteria defined above in a,b,c. Also, the spot or point of nearest relief must be determined without crossing over, under, or through the immovable obstruction. The exception where crossing over, through, or under does not apply is to cart paths or artificial surfaces. (ii) Immovable Obstruction In a Bunker: The same procedure is followed as described above except the ball must be dropped in the bunker. (iii) Immovable Obstruction On the Putting Green: the player must lift the ball and place it in the nearest point of relief to where it lay where there is no interference from the immovable obstruction if relief is being taken. NOTE--this position could possibly be off the green. NOTE--if the player has interference from anything other than the immovable obstruction in which it's clearly unreasonable for the player to make a stroke, the player is not entitled to relief. The player is also not entitled to relief from an immovable obstruction if interference only occurs through an abnormal swing, stance or direction of play. NOTE--if a player's ball is in a water hazard the player is not entitled to relief for interference from an immovable obstruction. NOTE--another ball may be substituted if the player's ball to be placed or dropped is not immediately recoverable. 1. Mark the position of the ball with a tee peg. 2. Remove the rake. 3. If the ball moves, you must replace it without penalty. MALAHIDE GOLF CLUB NEWSLETTER - PAGE 5 BALL LOST IN AN IMMOVABLE OBSTRUCTION: Other than in a water or lateral water hazard, if reasonable evidence exists, the player without penalty can substitute another ball and take relief from the spot it entered the immovable obstruction. ! ! ! ! ! ! ! Using the club you think you will play the shot with, find the nearest point of relief. 3. Mark that point with a tee peg. 4. From that point use your longest club to measure one club length not nearer the hole. 5. Drop the ball in that area. If the ball was off the green it may not be dropped onto the green. Below is a complete and finalised event list for the 2011 QUALIFIER April 2011 saw the first of the 18 holes Juvenile competitions with a decent turnout from the Boys in both competitions although we would like to see the timesheet full. The first competition was held on Thursday 21st April and won by Sam Nolan with a great score of 47pts. Sam has been working very hard on his game all winter. Niall Murphy won the second competition on the 28th April with 41pts. Well-done Niall. The girls had a great start to their competitions with two 12-hole scrambles organised by Mary Rock, Colette Moran and Peggy Dempsey. They were a great success with an excellent turn out from the girls who seemed to enjoy this format. We would also like to thank Ciara Smith and Marie Falvey for their help with the girls on the 2 Competition days. Going forward with the competitions we would ask all Juveniles to come up and play. Please check the diary for all the dates and please turn up on time with your GUI or ILGU card. Thanks to Peggy Dempsey and Mary Corr for all the hard work they do starting the competitions on the Thursdays. A reminder to all Juveniles and Parents - any Juvenile who has not yet got their handicap must do so before the 1st of June 2011. This means 3 singles cards done in Malahide and signed by an adult member. Simply put the 3 cards into an envelope marked ‘cards for handicaps’ and put into the competition box in the bag room. Team News The boys played their first team competition this year in the Andy Desmond Trophy (foursomes). The first round was played in Forrest Little where we beat Howth. In the second round we beat Portmarnock to progress to the semi-final in the links in Portmarnock. In the semi-final we beat Beaverstown and this left us in the final against Balbriggan. The final was a tight match with Philip Smith and Andrew Conlon winning 1up in the first match. Conor Sutton and Eoin Sweeney unfortunately lost 3 down so we lost 2 down overall. It was a great performance by the team to reach the final. We would like to give credit to our subs Pierce Finnegan and Sean Costello for their support. We also would like to thank the members who came to support us on the day. The boys also played the qualifying round of the Fred Daly on Friday the 29th of April in Balbriggan. On a tough day we qualified along with the Island, which is a great achievement by the team. There was a notable score of 76 from Conor Sutton, the second best score of the day. The team was Conor Sutton, Philip Smith, Gavin Purcell, Eoin Sweeney, Andrew Conlon, Sean Costello and Pierce Finnegan, sub Daniel McEvoy. We now go into Singles match play with 4 away and 3 at home v The Island. The date is to be confirmed. Please come out and support the team. ST. Each new member received a ‘welcome pack’ which included our diary, information sheet and a gift from our Pro John & Michelle Murray. Our caterers excelled themselves with a magnificent buffet laid out in the centre of the restaurant and hot canapés served by their pleasant staff. They kindly provided this at a sponsored rate. The member’s night then followed at 8.30pm and the sponsors and other members joined us. The Malahide Golf club singers and choir sang a few songs adding a touch of class to a very successful evening thoroughly enjoyed by all members. Laura Mahony OTHER NEWS Wanted: Trolley Tokens l Web Development Upgrade & Re-design Tommy Rusk has been working on our Web Development. It was generally agreed that we should seek to re-design our site to bring it up-to-date with a much-improved ‘look and feel’. The go ahead has been given to Re-design & Upgrade the MGC Web site. The new system will be simpler to use & it will be easier to access all the various areas within the site. The system will also be future-proofed and any new upgrades will automatically be applied to our web site. There will be a bright new Home Page. Can members please check their Golf Bags and Rain Gear and anywhere else that you may have stored Trolley Tokens and please return any tokens you may have to the Pro Shop as our stocks are extremely low. New access System l l l Your Malahide GUI and ILGU card will open the doors by swiping your card through the card reader. The information is taken from the black magnetic strip; try not to swipe your card through too quickly or the system will not read the card correctly, similarly when swiping the card, keep it flush with the card reader with the black magnetic strip nearest to the wall and facing to the right. Non members GUI / ILGU cards will not work on the system; visitors and your guests will have to use the Pin Code for Access. PIN CODE ACCESS Please inform your visitors and guests of the Pin Code so that they can access the car park barrier, the Clubhouse and the Locker Rooms with the same pin code. Please ensure that your guests and visitors are aware of the codes, as this will greatly help them enjoy their visit and similarly assist the staff, by not continually having to answer the buzzers. l Importantly there will be training for the various different users. Simply by entering usernames & passwords changes and additions can be made to the various sections, from Competitions to Pro shop to the Caterers. l We are also looking at a Proposed 3 D Course Flyby. This would give you a 3D view of each hole on the course through the new web site. Diary Changes l Juvenile Committee has announced that the fundraiser 4 Person Team event‚ which was scheduled for Saturday 16th April has been moved to Saturday 28th May 2011. l Vice Captain’s Fred’s Prize will now take place on the 11th June 11. l Lady Vice Captain’s Liz’s Prize will now take place on 18th June 11. MALAHIDE GOLF CLUB NEWSLETTER - PAGE 9 SOCIAL CALENDAR RULES NIGHT: BALL UP A TREE Anne O’Sullivan of the ILGU gave a Talk on the Rules of Golf on Tuesday, 5th April, which was very well attended. Anne has a very easy manner and imparted a lot of information in a friendly and humorous way. Anne started off with the basics of etiquette, which everyone knows we should abide by. It is not enough to know your ball is in a tree. You must be able to identify it. If you shake the tree and your ball falls down, you will be penalized one shot. You may declare the ball unplayable and then shake the tree. ETIQUETTE (1) (2) (3) (4) (5) Be courteous at all times. Make sure no one is near you when you swing a club. SHOUT FORE when appropriate. Do not stand on another player’s line of putt. Be ready to play and keep up with the group in front of you. COURSE (1) Repair pitch marks immediately. They take two weeks to repair if not dealt with immediately (2) When rakes are left in bunkers they should be left with the head of the rake facing the green. (1) If your ball then falls down you may proceed under unplayable lie and drop two club lengths directly below where the ball lay in the tree. (2) If your ball does not drop from tree you must deem it lost and play it as near as possible to where your last shot was played from. She highlighted the different penalties incurred, for the same offence, in Strokeplay and Matchplay. This is only a brief synopsis of what was covered on the night and is not a substitute for reading and understanding the rules of golf! Linda Newman Matthews QUIZ: MATCHPLAY (1) If you are even one second late the penalty is disqualification! On Tuesday 8th March there was a Table Quiz. The Quiz Master was the ever-popular Dermot McCann and it proved to be a great night. Jeannette Brophy & family were the ultimate winners! THE PLAYER (1) Your ball SHOULD have a unique ID mark. If two players are playing the same type and number ball and hit it in the same direction and neither ball can be identified, they are both deemed lost and both players must play from where they hit their last shot (shot and distance). (2) If your ball is sitting in deep rough or covered in sand in a bunker and your ID mark is not immediately visible, you may NOT turn the ball over to see if it is yours. You must inform your opponent that you intend to mark the ball. Then you can lift it and identify it as yours and then replace it as near as possible to the original lie. (Exception: if ball is covered in mud you may remove as little as possible of mud to identify the ball before replacing in its original lie). TAKING RELIEF. NEAREST POINT OF RELIEF (NPR) (1) Nearest not nicest! (2) VERY IMPORTANT: Do not lift ball until you know for sure what your options are. It may be better to play ball as it lies. (3) There is no distinction between fairway and rough. (4) If two NPR’s are equidistant, you may pick either.
