From the Chair of the Catholic Charities Foundation Board of Directors
J esus tells us in Matthew 25 when we serve those in need, we serve him. This passage
presents an awesome responsibility when we realize that the faces of those who turn to
us reflect the face of Christ.
Whether this was your first year as a donor or you are a long-time supporter of Catholic
Charities, you are a crucial part of our effort to lift families out of poverty. This annual
report is just one way we try to say “thank you” for your generosity.
Last year, we served tens of thousands of men, women and children. Their stories are
heavy with heartbreak, frustration and disappointment. But they also have hope: hope
to find work, to support a family and to feel positive about the future again.

Despite the economy and the many hardships it brings through government cuts and
increased need, our doors remain open and arms wide to help as many people as
possible. It’s what we’ve been doing for more than 80 years.
In July, we hit yet another milestone in that great history. After 20 years as head of
Catholic Charities, Ed Orzechowski announced his much-deserved retirement and
welcomed Monsignor John Enzler as his successor. We are so grateful to Ed for his
dedication to creating such an incredible organization.
At the same time, we look forward to a bright future with Father John. He brings more
than 40 years of experience in serving others — from his vocation as a priest to his
involvement with countless community organizations.

By the Numbers

• families were helped through our broad spectrum of family
services. These include supportive housing for teen parents, assistance
for families considering adoption, emergency rent and utility assistance,
groceries, case management, crisis intervention and referrals
• increase in the number of people who escaped dangerous winter
weather in one of our 11 hypothermia shelters
• employment referrals through our Spanish Catholic Center — these include connecting job seekers to job openings, referrals to job training
and readiness programs and helping with resumes and the interview process
• increase in the number of people with learning and developmental
disabilities who participated in the Kennedy Institute’s adult education
programs
• foreign-born people, including refugees, asylees, and victims
of human trafficking, received assistance through our Refugee Center and
Immigration Legal Services

companies or family foundations who contribute $5,000 or more a year.
Good Samaritan Society
The Good Samaritan Society recognizes individuals who have provided for the
future of Catholic Charities through bequests or other estate and planned gifts.
Planned giving often helps friends of Catholic Charities fulfill a personal legacy
while providing a lasting source of support for our mission of charity.
Lifetime Giving Societies
The Lifetime Giving Societies recognize donors’ lifetime, cumulative support of
an array of programs, projects, and events at Catholic Charities. Individuals
and family foundations with cumulative lifetime giving of $500,000 or more
are invited to become members.
A Company Making an Impact
Deloitte, LLP is a company that repeatedly demonstrates its commitment to community
and to service. Each year, the company holds an “Impact Day” during which tens of
thousands of Deloitte personnel volunteer at 800+ community service projects in more than 70 communities nationwide. Since
2009, hundreds of Deloitte personnel have volunteered with our Anchor Mental Health program, 801 East Men’s Shelter, and
Lt. Joseph P. Kennedy School to host workshops and beautify the grounds. Additionally, Deloitte selected Catholic Charities as
one of 10 nonprofits across the country to participate in their Pro Bono Fellowship program, lending a senior level consultant
to assist the agency with our recent strategic plan. In honor of their gracious commitment to our work and mission, Deloitte,
LLP received the 2011 Voice of Hope Award at the Catholic Charities Foundation Gala (photo).

Recognizing Two Decades of Service
“ Catholic Charities is often referred to as the ‘good works arm
of the Church.’ For more than 20 years, Ed Orzechowski has been
identified with that arm of the Archdiocese as it reached out to
embrace people in need. With a concern rooted in the Gospel’s
challenge that we see the face of Christ in all of those who are
hungry, thirsty, a stranger, naked, in prison, homeless, or with
so many other needs, Ed has directed, inspired and encouraged
all of those engaged in Catholic Charities to make it the largest
non-governmental provider of services in the area that makes up
the Archdiocese of Washington.
In paying tribute to Ed Orzechowski’s commitment to Catholic Charities,
we recognize his dedication as he championed the cause of the poor, of
the needy and of the ability of Catholic Charities to reach and serve them.
For me personally and on behalf of the Archdiocese of Washington, it is
a pleasure to salute Ed Orzechowski for his accomplishments on behalf
of Catholic Charities and for the witness he has borne to the Church’s
preferential option for the poor.
In July, Ed Orzechowski, who has served
in the role of President and CEO for more
than 20 years, announced his retirement.
During his tenure, Ed helped oversee
the 2004 merger that brought together
Catholic Charities, Anchor Mental Health,
the Lt. Joseph P. Kennedy Institute and
the Spanish Catholic Center. It was his
vision which drove the completion of
The Summit at St. Martin’s from idea
to reality, opening last year with 178
beautiful units of affordable housing. Ed
dedicated his entire career to serving his
neighbors, starting as a social worker
near Baltimore. He was first President and
CEO at Catholic Charities in Memphis
before coming to Catholic Charities of the
Archdiocese of Washington in 1980.
As Ed retires from his long service to Catholic Charities, he carries with
him the esteem, appreciation and affection of all of us.
