premium and diverse sea beaches within the country. Calangute, Candolim, Baga,
Anjuna, Miramar, Vagator, Palolem are some of the beautiful beaches in Goa.
Old Goa, also known as the spiritual heart of the city is the place where the heritage of the
city lies. It receives a steady flow of tourists but not too many to spoil the beauty of this
peaceful church lined town. The tomb of St Francis Xavier in the Basilica of Bom Jesus is
one of the best places to visit here.
Among the other important places that seek mention, Mangueshi Temple is the foremost
one. It is a temple of modern piece of architecture blended with traditional Hindu
patterns. Well if one looks forward to chances of shopping in Goa, the Ingo's Saturday
Night Market filled with colourful people, beautiful fabrics, unique fashion and jewellery,
delicious food, music and lots of fun would make the ideal option.
Palolem - the virgin beach
Palolem is located in the South Goa District, at a distance of 37 km from Margao. It is
rated among the finest beaches in the country. Palolem with its white sands, pristine
beaches and the azure blue waters of the Arabian Sea offers one of the safest environs in
Goa. The Palolem Beach is a serene beach of traditional fishing boats and modern water
sports. This corner of the state presents Goa at its best, sparingly inhabited by local
fishermen and tourists. Palolem's mile-long crescent shoreline is heavily forested with
coconut palms so pristine that dolphins still come to play. It is surrounded by the Shayadri
Hills, famous for its biodiversity and Cotigao Wildlife Park is also located near by.
About the beach
At Palolem, life seems to be just like living on the edge of the sea. It is one of the best beaches in Goa.
There are variety of shacks and restaurants selling sea food and international cuisine with bar strewn all
over. There are plenty of shops selling local wear. People of Palolem are sensitive to the environment to
the extent that after midnight you can dance to the music with headphones in nightclub.
Things to see and do
Palolem Beach has gained popularity in the last couple of years only. In 1989, it had its first beach resort.
Since then, there has been no stopping and today on the beachfront you will find rows of shacks. Palolem
has few bars which are open till late, so you won't miss the nightlife that much actually.
Some sight seeing
The island trip
This can be a little exploration trip for you. At the northern end of the beach there is a stream and across
the stream lies a small island. Either swim across in low tide or take a ferry. There is a rocky terrain
exploring which would be fun. At the island, apart from the usual frolicking around, there is option of
snorkeling. You can spot some sea urchins, sea missiles, sea cucumbers and some groupers. If you care
for some scenic beauty then wait till sunset, the view from this island is beyond expression.
Dolphin spotting trips
There are lots of dolphins in sea across Palolem Beach. Dolphin spotting trips are available at reasonable
prices. While on this trip, stop by the Butterfly Beach where you will feel as if you have the entire beach to
yourself.
