CO-CHAIRMEN'S REPORT
The past five years have been memorable ones for the Central
Fund for Traditional Institutions (CFTI), for like with the grovrth
of a child, the first five years of the growth of an organization are
the most important ones in its development. We have moved slowly but
with deliberation and dedication of purpose* quietly, without fanfare,
and with limited publicity. Yet we have been able to tell our story
to a wide range of people within the Jewish community. Kingman Brewster,
Jr., the president of Yale University, said that "... civilization is
a cumulative thing, dependent as much on continuity as upon progressive
change." These words describe aptly the principle upon which the Central
Fund was organized. Continuity in Jewish life is maintained through
traditional education and the development and growth of yeshivot. Pro
gressive change may be seen in the instrument developed to promote a
central combined fwd to benefit traditional institutions.
Beginning with a nucleus of S3 subscribers, we have been
successful in interesting some 325 people and the affiliated institu
tions have grown from 31 to 132. Our present Fund is approximately
S5U,000 of which $13,500 is a gift from the Jewish Welfare Fund. Many more
institutions have applied, but the rate of growth of the Fund has not
kept pace with the number of interested institutions. We hope that
in the next five years the number of subscribers will be doubled so
that more funds will be available. In essence, while our progress
has been excellent, there is room for additional growth in the five
years before us.
Perhaps one of the strengths achieved through the Central
Fund's efforts, has been the emergence of a climate of confidence and
respect among subscribers and institutions alike. The desire of so
many institutions to affiliate proves that the net funds received by
these institutions are greater than those obtained by individual
solicitation. The continued increase in the number of subscribers
indicates the community's appreciation of the service CFTI is
offering.
This past year, our Allocations Subconmittee, under the
chairmanship of Irving I. Stone, reviewed current information sub
mitted by the affiliated agencies concerning their budgets, aims and
purposes, size of staff, eniTollinent, «tc. The coainittee then based
-1-
the 1966 allocations on these findings. Adjustments were made in
allocations to assure a more equitable distribution of funds. Perhaps
the greatest accomplishment of CFTI is that it has raised the dignity
of the institution in the eyes of the public. We have given them a
forum — a place whei^e traditional institutions can be discussed
by a knowledgeable and interested group.
In point of fact, all of this has been accomplished with the
help of the subscribers. Your support and friendship have made
possible the results obtained. We thank you.
