Perhaps when there is a limit or an end to things we yearn for, the experience becomes more meaninful and significant. Join us as we explore various desires with the season of RISE TO THE EDGE. Pairing it with Stravinsky’s great gamble, and Schubert’s Great C Major makes this an amazing selection of monumental works! MAR 17 MICAH GANGWER, Violin TAN DUN Violin Concerto (The Love) ˚ WALTON Symphony No. 1 ˚ Written only two years ago by Oscar and Grammy-winning composer Tan Dun, The Love was brought to the attention of Maestro Kuwahara by SOA Associate Concertmaster Micah Gangwer. Tan Dun’s works can be heard in the feature films Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and Memoirs of a Geisha. While Walton’s symphony sounds simplistic, it is actually a very difficult piece. What you hear on the surface is not always what it appears to be – achieving such pure music is truly a work of art. 2011-2012 SEASON WWW.SOAUGUSTA.ORG 706.826.4705 APR 28 Laquita Mitchell, Soprano Dinyar Vania, Tenor Arthur Ross, Viola Augusta Choral Society, Dr. J. This national Orchestras Feeding America project, initiated in 2009 by the League of American Orchestras, was inspired by the true story of Nathaniel Ayers, a gifted Juilliard-trained string player, living on the streets of Los Angeles as a result of a mental illness. Los Angeles Times columnist Steve Lopez noticed Nathaniel, and was drawn to his talent, intelligence, and passion for Beethoven – leading to the creation of the film, The Soloist, about Mr. Ayers. This film and the Orchestras Feeding America project are testaments to the power of music. 2011-2012 SEASON WWW.SOAUGUSTA.ORG 706.826.4705 Subscriber Benefits 10% Single Ticket Discount Priority Reserved Seating Replacement Tickets Same seats at every concert Exclusive pre-sales for all concerts Subscription to Opus Newsletter Flexible Concert Ticket Exchange Discounts to Area Businesses and Restaurants: Crums on Central: Enjoy one complimentary appetizer with purchase of entrée Rooster’s Beak: 10% off Taco Plate or Entrée New York Butcher Shoppe: 10% off all Non-Sale Items Kathy Brittingham, DMD: 10% off Teeth Whitening Service La-Z-Boy Furniture Galleries: 10% off Furniture Items Blue Horse Bistro: 10% off Menu Item; $1.00 off Drinks La Bonbonniere: 10% off your Order $30 or more Frame It Now: 20% off Non-Sale Items The New Moon Café: Free 12 oz Coffee with another purchase EVENT SEATING First Baptist of Augusta 3500 Walton Way The Bell Auditorium 710 Telfair Street Whether it’s First Baptist or the Bell Auditorium, there’s not a bad seat in the house.
