Projects AIRPLANE LAUNCHER WATER PUMP / SOLAR WATER FEATURE • Created for use at the National Space Centre • Provides actual launch speed of up to 80 MPH • Many opportunities for ultra-low cost design and technology project work Our low cost water pump is suitable for a wide range of project applications - from automatic watering systems to water jet boats. The pump is sealed and can be fully immersed in water. Designing and making paper aircraft is no trivial pursuit. There are now hundreds of books and websites, etc world-wide offering information on flight principles as well as using paper as a structural material. Can be used for mainstream curriculum projects. Constructed of heavy gauge steel and contains two contra–rotating rubber wheels that grip the plane and throw it forward at high speed. The water pump is supplied with a length of plastic tube that can be used to direct the flow of water. Simply connect this water pump to a 3 - 6V battery to pump water or try something a little more creative by making a solar water feature using a simple circuit, a solar panel and a low voltage water pump. Approx height: 55mm Approx width: 40mm Flow rate: Approx 40 ml/sec. Connect yellow wire to +V. Code: BLC 036 Price £5.75 SOLAR PANEL Mono-crystaline solar panel providing an output of 4.5V, 100mA. Easily energised by a bright lamp or sunlight to power such components as motors, LEDs or simple circuits. 60mm x 60mm. Code: BC1 002 Was: £129.00 NOW: £109.00 Code: EL1 006 Was: £3.25 NOW: £2.75 PAPER PLANE BOOSTER Want to make your paper planes fly further for longer? This simple but elegant solution could be the answer. It makes use of a small supercapacitor (10 Farad) to power a micromotor and propeller. Forms the basis of a great classroom or home activity involving experimentation, testing and design challenges. How far forward does the booster need to be for the balance to be right? Would a shorter straw be better or worse? Is it better to have a glider or dart-like plane? How will you secure your booster? Does the type and size of propeller affect performance? Should the propeller be used to pull or push the plane? Great fun and very competitive! Includes Micro Motor, Super Capacitor, Micro Propeller, Cable Ties, Straw and length of wire. Instructions on basic construction are also included. Just add paper! Projects STEAM CHEST The history of steam bending wood is a rich one with numerous examples of pioneering design. In response to the renaissance of commercial interest in wood forming, we have produced the first small scale steam chest capable of taking lengths of timber up to 550mm in length. Steam to the chest is supplied by a proprietary boiler similar to the sort used by DIY’ers for wallpaper stripping. For schools and departments with a long tradition and expertise in wood based technology work, and for departments requiring a low cost alternative to machined products, the Steam Chest is a serious option. Its relatively small size means it will fit into a ‘desktop’ making strategy easily. The timescale from the ideas stage through to cutting simple formers to moulding is so short that lots of ideas and designs can be explored in just a few lessons. Several pupils can have their work ‘soaking’ in the steam chest at any one time, making the management of whole class work on steam laminating easier. Beech and Ash are ideal veneers to use as due to their grain and compliance once steamed they form readily. In fact all hard and softwoods exhibit different qualities for steaming and finished appearance. It is worth experimenting with what is available in the department first. The different striations and colours of different timbers mean that some interesting visual effects are possible when laminating different woods together. 550MM STEAM CHEST Supplied by an all-plastic electric boiler, steam is continuously injected at low pressure into one end of the unit. The timber inside softens and becomes pliable enough to bend into tight curvatures either free-form or in moulds. The steam chest must be used with care, but it is supplied thermally insulated to avoid contact with the hot walls. The steam chest comes complete with boiler, high temperature connecting hose and instructions. Internal diameter of steam chest is 4 inches. Crumble This truly game-changing device opens up countless possibilities for ‘embedded intelligence’ as required by the new national curriculum. What makes it unique is the much lower cost than any comparable device (about the same as our IQ4 controller) and the ease of use. Non-electronics specialists can use it right away BUT, at the same time, it offers unlimited potential for advanced users – including electronics professionals. You simply create a programme on a computer screen (shown below) by moving icons into the right position – e.g., to turn things on and off – and then plug in the Crumble. The programme is immediately transferred and Crumble does whatever you tell it to do. Drawing power from a very small battery, it might be applied to anything from turning LEDs on and off in smart clothing to driving and steering a robot. NOTE: This device is designed and supplied to assist teachers deliver the national curriculum at a time of severe cost constraint. There are no hidden charges for software etc. That is all free. The Crumble embedded controller is programmed using a PC/Mac/Linux application based on MIT Scratch. Compatibility with the Raspberry Pi is planned. The software is available as a FREE download from Redfern Electronics (www.redfernelectronics.co.uk). www.mindsetsonline.co.uk . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Crumble No Soldering Necessary Input and output devices can be connected using croc-clip test leads to encourage experimentation. Solder pads with 1mm holes are also provided (at terminal block spacing). It should also be possible to use conductive thread to connect directly. Sample Crumble project shown for illustrative purposes only. Parts not included with Crumble. Advanced functions with Crumbs Daisy-chain-able expansion boards called ‘Crumbs’ will add extra functions to the crumble. Crumbs to include: Servo controller; motor controller; colour sensor; digital temperature sensor and so on. Individually controllable RGB LEDs called ‘Sparkles’ work in a similar way (See bottom). Two high power outputs can be control motors and similar devices. Battery or USB powered The on-board micro USB socket allows the Crumble to be programmed via a standard USB cable. The Crumble can be powered directly from USB, however, the motor driver and any external boards require an external power source of 4.5V to 5.5V (for example 3xAA batteries). The external power source will also power the Crumble when not connected to USB. There are two pairs of power pads to allow pass-through to expansion boards, or ‘Crumbs’. Code: CRM PAK Price: £20.00 Code: CRM SPA Price: £6.00 SPARKLES These Super-bright LEDs can be set to any colour by the Crumble. They connect to the ‘Power Out’ pads and to ‘D’. Each Sparkle has its own power in and out connections so can be chained together (up to 32 LEDs long), each with its own function. The colour of each Sparkle can be individually controlled by the Crumble to show any selectable colour of the spectrum. Supplied in strips of 5 Sparkles. Textile LEDs TEXTILE LEDS These bright LEDs, designed by Mindsets, are easily stitched into a circuit and are available in five colours. Each one is mounted on a thin triangular board just 12mm along each edge. Resistors are pre-connected to the LEDs so no additional resistors are required when using a 3 volt or 6 volt battery. The LEDs may be powered using a single 3V lithium cell or two lithium cells (6V) for extra brightness. Two to four AA or AAA batteries would also be suitable, though they would be heavier and bulkier. At 3 volts each LED will consume about 5-10mA. At 6 volts each LED will consume 30-40mA. Supplied in a strip of 10 LEDs, which can be easily snapped apart. Component.
