sxj b’’z ISSUE # 6 Newsletter of the Tehilim Hotline THE ORANGE GROVE ..................................2 W hen was the last time that out of nowhere came an unexpected hefty expense? It could have been a big dentist bill or an expense for a simcha, such as a wedding. The bank account has reached its limit and the grocery bill is growing out of proportion. And from where will the money come to pay for it? And then…out of the clear blue everything works out as if an aperture opened up in heaven and out pours the money to pay the bill! Rabbi Sholom Meir Wallach (a contemporary rabbi in Jerusalem, author of Mayan HaShevua) THE EXTRA PACK ......................................3 HELP FROM HASHEM RECIPE makes the following observation; “Look around…in Russia, there are long lines for bread and for basic necessities. With all her rich resources of wheat, oil, gas, gold and diamond mines there’s still no bread to eat! But here in Israel without the reserves of gas and other natural resources other countries boast about and even HOTLINE ............................5 SEGULAH FOR REFUAH ..............................10 PRAYER FOR TEHILIM DATELINE 2006 e are happy to bring to our participants and readers the latest issue of our inspirational newsletter. This issue focuses on the topic of parnassa – livelihood. Many of us experience major difficulties in providing for ourselves and our families. We are often crushed under the burden of expenses for health, education, and day to day living. We must strengthen our faith in the One Who Provides for every living thing, as the version of the Prayer for Livelihood printed in many siddurim, prayer books, states: ‘It is you Hashem the God, Who nourishes, sustains, and supports, from the horns of re’eimim (a reference to a huge creature with a long and powerful horn) to the eggs of lice (this Talmudical expression signifies from the smallest to the greatest)…provide me with my allotment of bread…’ God is not shorthanded; he measures out every creature’s needs and provides it to all. We endeavor to pray for every need of our community and to this end, we continue to form more and more cycles of the recitation of the entire Book of Tehilim (Psalms). WE ARE PROUD TO REPORT THAT WE ARE UP TO OUR ELEVENTH CYCLE OF THE DAILY RECITATION OF THE ENTIRE TEHILIM. We wish to continue to see the Tehilim Hotline grow and expand with many more cycles and to merit continued salvation for the Jewish people. “God of our forefathers: The needs of Thy people Israel are many and their wit is small.( I.e., they do not know how to ask for their needs) May it be Thy will, O Lord our God, to give to each one his sustenance and to each body what it lacks. Blessed art Thou, O Lord, who hearkens unto prayer.” (Tractate Berachos 29a) Tehilim Hotline: 888.44.TEHILIM sxj b’’z R av Eliyahu Dushnitzer, zt’l, Mashgiach of Yeshivas Lomza in Petach Tikvah, owned an orange orchard in Ramat Hasharon, which was the source of his income. Shortly after acquiring the orchard, the citrus industry went into an economic crisis and many growers were forced into bankruptcy. Not only did the grove not produce income, it incurred large deficits. Rav Eliyahu was utterly distressed, constantly worrying that if his time should come to depart from this world, he will have left over many debts. To Rav Eliyahu, the solution to his problem was simple enough: Turn to Father and ask him to resolve his predicament. And that’s exactly what he did. He pleaded to Hashem, our Father in heaven. In addition, whoever came in contact with him was asked to pray on his behalf. Aware of Rav Eliyahu’s problem, one of his students found the ideal buyer for the grove, a well-to-do American who had expressed great interest in buying some agricultural property in Eretz Yisrael. He arranged a meeting between the prospective buyer and Rav Eliyahu, and all three took a bus from Petach Tikvah to Ramat Hasharon to inspect the orchard. Not wanting to deceive the buyer, Rabbi Dushnitzer proceeded to point out various problems with the orchard and took him on a guided tour and pointed out every decayed tree, all of the insect-infested trees, as well as the pits and ditches in the orchard. Due to Rabbi Dushnitzer’s strict code of honesty, the deal did not go through. The American returned to the United States and Rav Eliyahu returned to continued losses from his orange grove. Several days passed and Rav Eliyahu happened to meet one of his favorite former students, the venerable Maggid of 2 Yerushalayim, Harav Sholom Shwadron zt’l. “I have a special request for you, dear Reb Sholom,” he said. “Were you not someone very close to me, I would feel uncomfortable asking it of you. You’re surely aware of all the aggravation I’ve been having from my orange grove in Ramat Hasharon, and the great deficits it is incurring. May I ask that when you return to Yerushalayim you visit a certain friend of yours who studied alongside you at the yeshivah in Petach Tikvah? “This friend has established a Talmud Torah in Yerushalayim. Some time ago I met him and poured out my heart to him in regard to this grove. I asked him to recite several chapters of Tehilim in my behalf with the schoolchildren every day after their studies. You know, Reb Sholom, your friend is such a busy person - carrying the responsibility for both the educational and budgetary needs of his Talmud Torah - as well as his myriad chesed activities. It is no surprise that he overlooked my request regarding reciting Tehilim with the children. Please, Rav Sholom, when you arrive in Yerushalayim, kindly approach him and encourage him on my behalf.” “I beg the rebbe’s forgiveness, Rav Sholom said, “but how are you so sure that my friend actually forgot about the Tehilim?” “That’s obvious,” Rav Eliyahu replied with absolute conviction. “The fact is that thus far I have been unsuccessful in finding the proper buyer for the property. Unquestionably, the only factor missing is the sincere prayers of the tinokos shel beis rabban, the precious Talmud Torah children.” Immediately upon arriving in Yerushalayim, Rav Sholom rushed to the Talmud Torah and met his friend just as he was hurrying from the school. Rav Sholom related his encounter with their rebbe and the conversation that ensued. His friend apologetically admitted that he did indeed forget about Rav Eliyahu and his orange grove and had not implemented the request for Tehilim. In less than a week, Rav Eliyahu successfully sold the property to a skilled farmer who found all the orange grove’s problems to be minor and easily correctable. He paid full market price for it, enabling Rav Eliyahu to repay all his outstanding obligations. This good fortune did not surprise Rav Eliyahu at all. He had never doubted the power of Tehilim from the mouths of the holy children of Yerushalayim. This story appears in The Maggid Series by Rabbi Paysach Krohn, published by Mesorah Publications, as well as in other publications. Tehilim Hotline: 888.44.TEHILIM HELP FROM HASHEM IN HEAVEN by Yossi Zicherman S weating under the weight of his burden, the poor man trudged along the road. Suddenly he heard the sound of a carriage behind him and he dashed off to the side of the road. The carriage came to a halt beside him and its wealthy owner called to him: “Can I give you a lift? Toss your bags into the carriage and hop in.” The poor fellow was overjoyed and he quickly entered the carriage and unloaded his bags. But one small pack he still kept on his back. “Why don’t you put that bag down too and relax?” “But you are so kind to me already, taking my big bags and me. I don’t want to burden you with this pack too so I’ll carry it myself!” Silly man! The carriage is carrying you along with everything in it. You’re holding the pack on your back does not lighten the burden of the wagon. Just as the wagon is carrying you it is also carrying your pack. With this moshol, parable, Rabbi Yisroel Meir Hakohen Kagan, the Chofetz Chaim (1838-1933) wanted to teach that people place too much importance on having money put away for a “rainy day” - to support themselves in case things don’t go so well. If you ask one of them how he expects to support himself throughout all the years of his life he replies: “I have faith in G-d that He will provide me with a livelihood.” Such a person is like the foolish traveler who puts his entire burden on his provider’s carriage but leaves one little pack which he must take care of himself. “Cast your burden upon G-d,” says the Psalmist, “and he will support you.” In the end you have to place your faith in G-d, so you might as well have confidence in Him for your “rainy day” as well. Moral - Don’t Try Carrying Your Own Bag If G-d Is Giving You a Lift. Hashem runs the world, He pulls all the strings. Pushing His master computer’s buttons; He’s in control of everything. He guides mankind to peace and perfection, to its destiny and dream. Helping to shape world history; in harmony creation rings We pray to You- the Almighty, to bestow blessing on the land. You open Your hand wide, satisfying the needs of every man. With care, concern and compassion, You lovingly lend Your hand, Guiding our footsteps and fate, You help us securely stand. Dear Father, high in Heaven, You’re always very near. When we plead to You in prayer, we know You hear our tears. Regardless of our troubles, we have nothing to fear. Your helping hand is close; we’ll find the strength to bear. Though these times are troubled, the darkness will transform to light. Let’s hope to Hashem in Heaven; He’s leading us out of the night. He’s our inspiration and security; is there any greater might? Feel His power when we pray; together we’ll win the fight. Let’s lift our eyes to the heavens; Hashem is our help and hope. He’ll restore health and happiness; He will heal all our woes. Let’s pray- praising Hashem joyously, while we journey down the road; Returning back to our home, as the future world unfolds. From Mendel Weinbach’s Who Wants To Live: The Mesholim of the Chofetz Chaim www.tehilimhotline.org 3 sxj b’’z Recipe For Success K nowing how scrupulous his rebbe, R’ Yisrael Baal Shem Tov was about the kashrus of the wine he used for Kiddush, R’ David Lilkes embarked on a mission to produce wine for his rebbe under the highest standards of halachah (Jewish Law). He traveled to Hungary, to a vineyard of excellent repute, and supervised the winemaking from its inception, ensuring that only the best grapes were used, and ascertaining that each step of the process was performed strictly according to halachah. Finally, after great expenditures of time and effort, the wine casks were filled with this special wine over which the Baal Shem Tov would sanctify the lofty Day of Rest. R’ David eagerly returned to his rebbe to report on his successful mission, detailing his intense supervision of each step of the winemaking process. “Rebbe,” he declared, “I can vouch for the absolute kashrus of this wine — it is superior to any you have used until now. The casks are outside in the courtyard, if you would like to go see them.” They stepped outside and R’ David was utterly horrified to discover that the lids had been removed from the casks of wine! “Who has broken the seals?” he cried in anguish. “I have been so careful every step of the way, and now all my great toil has gone to waste! The Rebbe would have been so pleased to have this wine, and now all has been for naught!” Investigation led to discovery of the culprit: a passing soldier had seen the casks and cavalierly broken the seals in order to slake his thirst. His interference had, of course, rendered the wine forbidden to drink.’ R’ David was heartbroken at the tremendous loss, the more so for being convinced that this last-minute disaster was a Heavenly sign of displeasure with his efforts. The Baal Shem Tov explained the incident very clearly. “You invested great effort into producing the ‘perfect’ wine, taking every necessary precaution, and were quite pleased with the results. It was only at the very conclusion that something went wrong with your plans. “What was the missing ingredient? “You were so caught up in your enthusiasm for your noble undertaking that you omitted a crucial ingredient: you neglected to ask for Divine assistance! Did you ever pray for siyata d’Shmaya for success, or recite a chapter of Tehilim that all should go well? No mission in life can ever hope to succeed unless Hashem is made part of it. Therefore your attempts failed.” (From A Mazeldig Voch by Avrohom Barash. Mesorah Publications, New York) 4 Tehilim Hotline: 888.448.3445 Join The Tehilim Hotline G oing through the letters of blessings and appreciation that we, at Tehilim Hotline receive regularly is a source of great chizuk and inspiration for us. His wealth cannot help him in his time of need; His wasted years are forever lost and cannot be retrieved. - A Chassidic Proverb 6 with our troubled economy there are no bread lines! Young couples are still getting married; businesses are operating and thank G-d everything is in order. It’s not necessarily easy but we don’t have to spend all day waiting on lines for our provisions. Moreover people are sill flocking to settle in Israel and are being absorbed in the country. How is it possible? On what basis are these people joining a country with a failing economy? The economists don’t have any solution... but we do. We know what the Talmud teaches: “a person’s parnassa (livelihood) is as difficult as Kriyas Yam Suf, the miracle of the Splitting the Sea” (Tractate Pesachim 118a). And on miracles you don’t ask questions! This is simply how making a living is, for the individual as well as for the country. It’s all relying on miracles; it’s all relying upon heavenly mercy. Not only was the Splitting of the Sea a miracle but it was also the furthest solution from anyone’s mind! When the Egyptians pursued the Children of Israel and the Israelites were on the brink of the Sea, with no place to continue, there were those who wanted to return to the Egyptian oppression and there were those that wanted to take up arms and battle their oppressors, but no one ever thought that they could enter the raging sea and...it would split and transform to dry land! The same is with parnassa as the Talmud says: “Seven things are hidden from man; [among them] the day of death, when the final redemption will occur, what is in another’s mind and from where will his sustenance come, etc…” (Pesachim 54b) If you were to ask most people to identify the turning point in their lives; how they made it to where they are today, they could not give you a definitive answer. Instead, they will tell you stories upon stories of how they found themselves in their present situation. It’s exactly like the Splitting of the Sea where the Jews did not know from where will come their salvation! Another comparison between finding parnassa and the Splitting of the Sea; Chazal (the Rabbis of Blessed Memory) teach that when the sea split, it did not just split in two, it split into twelve distinct parts, one part for each tribe. Chazal go even further and describe how each person had his own path to walk on (within the twelve fissures). So when comparing parnassa with Kriyas Yam Suf what were they referring to? They were referring to the divergent means by which each individual finds his particular line of work. Some make a living as farmers, some as knitters, some as jewelers, etc. Each person has his own distinct path by which he provides for himself and his family. Sometimes within the same field it happens that someone else opens the same business next door to another. (How many groceries, clothing stores, pizza shops, etc. are in your neighborhood?) One may be abuzz with a constant flow of customers while the other one struggles to corral patrons. Each one “makes a living”; some more and some less. Yet, as the Talmud teaches: “no man encroaches on what has been reserved for his fellow” (Yoma 38b). HORSE SENSE To illustrate our point; One time a man came to Rabbi Chaim of Sanz zt’l (a Chassidic Rebbe of the previous generation) with the complaint that another person opened the same business directly across the street from his own shop. This proprietor claimed that this competitor was ruining his business. The Rebbe asked him, “Have you ever traveled in a (horse-drawn) wagon?” The Chassid answered, “Certainly, Rebbe. Many times!” Tehilim Hotline: 888.44.TEHILIM “And most probably you brought the horse to the river to drink when it was thirsty?” the Rebbe said. “Certainly” responded the Chassid. “Have you ever noticed that before the horse drinks, he stamps his forefeet in the water?” The Chassid was flabbergasted; “The Rebbe is right, the horse does that, but I never thought about it. Indeed. Why does the horse stamp its feet in the water?” The Rebbe answered, “It’s simple. When the horse lowers its head to drink, he sees his own reflection in the calm, clear water, and it thinks that another horse has come to steal its water. The horse is afraid that there will not be enough for the both of them. So what does it do? It kicks the water and it becomes clouded with dirt and mud and the other horse disappears! The Chassid chuckled at the antics of the horse. The Rebbe continued; “do you understand? Not only is the second horse a figment of the first horse’s imagination but even if the other horse were real, there would still be plenty of water in the ocean for both of them. So what did our horse gain? Only one thing, that now he has to drink dirty, muddy water instead of clear, clean water!” The Rebbe brought the lesson home and quoted the aforementioned Talmudic teaching, “no man encroaches on what has been reserved for his fellow”. Each person has his own field by which he provides for his family, he does not lose what the other one seemingly is taking away from him. AND OF COURSE ONE MUST PRAY The Talmud asks at the end of Tractate Kiddushin: “What should one do to become rich? Let him conduct his business with integrity”. The Talmud continues, “Many have conducted themselves thusly to no avail”. The Rabbis conclude, “But rather plead for mercy to [G-d,] the One to Whom All the Wealth is His; as the verse states, ‘Mine is the silver and Mine is the gold says the Lord of Hosts’”. Rabbi Pinchus Halevi Horowitz in Sefer Hamakneh, (End of Tractate Kiddushin) elaborates and states: This is what the Torah is referring to when it warns, “And you will think, ‘My strength and the power of my hand have acquired this wealth for me”. A person should not rely on the strength and the power of his hand in his endeavors to sustain himself because Hashem has no limitations to provide for every individual’s needs whether it is great or small. The primary influence of abundance is that which flows from Above, as the verse states, “Hashem will bless all that you do”; which means that poverty and wealth is not dependent on one’s occupation. There are many who work hard in their line of work and are not successful and there are many who engage in menial work and are successful. Often we extend great efforts in one area with the hope that we will support ourselves thereby, but Hashem has other plans and steers us in a different direction in which we settle into. Which brings us back to the idea expressed by Rabbi Wallach above; no one can put their finger on how they actually got to where they are today just like the Jews had no idea that their salvation was at hand until….the sea split and Pharaoh and Egypt were history! The lesson that we learn is that everything depends on “that which emanates from Hashem’s word”. According to Hashem’s blessing will be the success. www.tehilimhotline.org The following psalms are considered auspicious for success in one’s livelihood. 23 34 36 62 65 67 - d"f s"k u"k c"x v"x z"x 85 - v"p 104 - s"e 121 - tf"e 136 - uk"e 144 - s"ne 145 - v"ne The Sefer Hachinuch recommends that one who recites Birchas Hamazon, Grace After Meals, with proper concentration and intent, will be blessed with good livelihood. It is also propitious to recite Parshas Ha-Mun (the portion in the Torah that discusses the Manna – the miraculous food from heaven that the Children of Israel ate in the wilderness) found in Shemos (Exodus), Parshas Beshalach, Chap. 16, verses 4-36. It is most auspicious when recited Shnayim Mikra V’Echod Targum, twice as read in the Torah and once with the Commentary of Onkeles on the Tuesday of the week in which the Torah Portion of Beshalach occurs. It is also an accepted segula to recite the Torah portion dealing with the Ketores, the daily incense-offering as stated in the Talmud: ‘The baraita teaches: It never happened that a person was given the opportunity to offer the incense more than once. Why? Rebi Chanina said: Because, the Incense-Offering brings wealth’ (Yoma 26a). 7 sxj b’’z To whom it may concern, Thank you so much for saying Tehilim for my grandmother. This is that a person determines in his heart that Hashem is the A-mighty, the Only Power in the world. Ein Od Milvado — there is no power beside Him, anywhere in the world or outside it. Everything that exists is filled with His Unity. The person should nullify everything else in his heart and pay no attention to any thing or any will in the world. And thus will Hashem also nullify all the powers that seek to harm him and they will be totally ineffectual against him.' And also the One Who Decrees, Speaks and Brings into Existence brings about miracles and wonders that counter the laws of nature to one who surrenders his thoughts and sincerely adheres to pure faith in Him and will not allow him to falter. And He is able at any time to influence the established order of nature or to reverse the laws of nature.” TEHILIM HOTLINE Tehilim Hotline: 888.44.TEHILIM ✁ Cut along here Prayer for Parnassa (livelihood) 8KYK-8EKX FWKHNWXXEKHNWnY:KEkSjNQL XPUKYK X EX ]QRiJKKh&KE&j [EU3l 8K XE X]Q8K[EUl38K XE X]Q RKQWQ 8RKU7jIQ NWU *KKh&:QJl Nk)[EU3l 8 W2XRVXU*k&E7QKVKiNKEIh KUjP7NWX :~VKj&RKHVjPQ8 Y-X VHY YM8jSYYWhNQY :VKjNRWKi) RWXjNYKVKiN 8KElJjNW2XYkIUjFNi KH[lJNkIX K7jIWlNQWY7 8 YkFMUYX KVKNlJRKQ R-NhNMKWiN~-KEh)]7 8 XQlNW2XRKKMjN VKQ7 RVWNkINj F X\RKiJKiS-Q 8RKiNKiJ XQYLQYKY~WX K*kJ~- XQj) :gF8\Q8EhJj&*X:K~ XIUi&Q KVKWhNQ7 8 KEKhJRkN XJjN4UkFQ 87jIUhFnYY7WKi) RKUjPQ KWjP XKjN RkNjIWx~WR~YNk xL,EY7WX8Uh& DK:KgNWN I 4hN-Y L,PUKMxNkINj lJKi& DQ8:~VKx~WM,3z ,7iJj& \,QRkN,JjNL7KxW2:gNj)jNlIK W8YX:jFYK YX YKxNlJ N~W8UK7jJY XU XY\YX X- XVHY XQ-E L~WXHK6l0lN NlI8WLlJQNj KiN]Q9Ki&GKXKEUH RKUK KiNkNGi&8KVlJl&nY LQW RkN XJKQK Nk)RhN-FkFhNj& XVjFkJjN May it be Your Will, Hashem, our God and the God of our fathers that my provisions and my livelihood and the provisions and livelihood of my household together with the provisions and livelihood of the entire Jewish people be encompassing, appropriate and virtuous in Your hands. May we never be in need of the gifts of man nor of their loans but only of Your hand which is full, open, holy and generous. And may my work and all my dealings be blessed and not destitute, for life and not for death. And may I merit that no desecration of the Name of Heaven occur through me, and that I may be among the beneficent and those that influence for good to everyone at all times and fill my hand with Your blessings and satiate me of your goodness, as You did with those that emerged from Egypt. For You are blessed and bring blessings to the Universe. The eyes of all look expectedly to You, and You give them all their food in its proper time. You open Your hand, and satisfy the desire of every living being. (Psalms 145:16) Cast your burden upon Hashem, and He will sustain you; He will never allow the falling of the righteous. (Psalms 55:23) And grant the holy and pure souls that pray to Hashem for my sake and because of me to lift my horn and raise my fortune in order that I will be able to serve You wholeheartedly for eternity.
