Welcome from the Chairman
Welcome to the Bolton Wanderers
Institute of Sport prospectus.
Another successful year completed on the
International Football Studies Programme has
seen the flagship course expand once again.
We are proud to announce that more students
attended the course from more countries last
year and as a result we were able to offer a wider
range of subjects and qualifications.
Academic results have improved year on year
and resulted in many of our students applying for
university places, boosting confidence and
improving our academic and athletic performance.
The Institute has been inspected by the
Independent Schools Inspectorate and achieved
an excellent report on quality of education as well
as welfare, care and safeguarding of students.
The report summary is available on our website.
Our unique programme enabled students to
experience the life of professional athletes
through the expertise of tutors and coaches in
first class sporting facilities. The competitive
games programme encouraged team spirit and
togetherness that only athletes can understand
or experience.
The improvement in the individual students at the
end of this year with regards to maturity, fitness
and knowledge gained from the experience has
been more noticeable than ever. The students are
assessed by our elite coaches including
internationally acclaimed professionals and the
progress this year made by our current crop of
students has been outstanding.
A huge testimony to the programme is the
significant number of students who are returning
for another academic year at the Institute.

I look forward to meeting all our students and
parents on enrolment.

Club History
Introduction to the Club
Wanderers World Presence
In 1874 the Rev. Joseph Farrell-Wright took over
a school in a challenging area of Bolton. In order
to assist with educating boys, he used football as
a tool to help motivate them and to teach them
both good discipline and the importance of
teamwork. That team was Christ Church FC
where education was the driving force.
Over 120 players have travelled from 30 different
countries to play for Bolton Wanderers. There
have been hooks in the dressing room for
international players including Jay Jay Okocha
from Nigeria, Youri Djorkaeff from France,
El-Hadji Diouf from Senegal, Radhi Jaidi from
Tunisia, Chung-Yong Lee from South Korea, Mark
Fish from South Africa, Ali Al-Habsi from Oman
and Medo Kamara from Sierra Leone.
Three years later the team lost their pitch and had to
“wander” around from place to place in order to play.
In 1877 the name of the team changed to Bolton
Wanderers, thus founding the Club of today.
In many ways we have come full circle with the
programme on offer as outlined in this prospectus.
Bolton Wanderers Football Club was one of the 12
founder members of the Football League along with
Accrington Stanley, Aston Villa, Blackburn Rovers,
Burnley, Derby County, Everton, Notts County, Preston
North End, Stoke City, West Bromwich Albion and
Wolverhampton Wanderers.
.
Bolton Wanderers have also helped to kick-start the
careers of some of the top players in the world such
as Gary Cahill (Chelsea and England), and also Jack
Wilshere (Arsenal and England) and Daniel Sturridge
(Chelsea, Liverpool and England) who both played for
the Club on loan before returning to their own Clubs to
become world class players.
The Wanderers Success
Bolton Wanderers played in the very first FA Cup
tournament in the 1881/82 season. The club won
the first FA Cup to be played at Wembley
Stadium in 1923 beating West Ham United 2–0,
and were the first club to score at Wembley.
Bolton Wanderers went on to win the FA Cup in
1926, 1929 and 1958, and were finalists on three
other occasions.
Nat Lofthouse, Bolton Wanderers’ most famous player,
signed for the club in 1939 and wore the No. 9 shirt for
both Bolton Wanderers and England. He made 503
appearances for Bolton Wanderers and was capped 33
times for England, scoring 30 goals for his country. In
recognition of his achievements for club and country, a
statue of Nat was erected outside the stadium in 2013.
Bolton Wanderers have qualified for the UEFA Cup on
two occasions, reaching the last 32 in 2005/06 and the
last 16 in 2007/08. During these tournaments the Club
played against some of the world’s top teams including
Bayern Munich, Red Star Belgrade, Atletico Madrid,
Olympique Marseille, Zenit St Petersburg and Besiktas.

Location
Situated in the heart of the North West of England,
Bolton Wanderers Football Club is steeped in
history and tradition, and is an ideal base from
which to explore the whole of the United Kingdom.
Facilities
Macron Stadium
Having opened its doors in 1997, the Macron Stadium
has developed a reputation as one of the most iconic
football grounds in the country. Visible from miles around,
the Macron Stadium houses the Bolton Whites Hotel, a
four star hotel with 125 modern and spacious bedrooms,
a number of which overlook the match pitch.
Boasting a capacity of 28,723 and situated in the midst
of a vibrant and thriving retail, leisure and business
district, the Stadium has played host to a number of
memorable matches against world-famous sides such as
Manchester United, Atletico Madrid and Chelsea. It has
hosted numerous high profile concerts, with Oasis, Elton
John, Coldplay and Pink all having graced the prestigious
turf in recent years. The Institute of Sport – Study Centre,
our students’ academic and learning facilities is based
within the Stadium complex.
Academy Training Ground
Located within a five minute walk from the Stadium is
the Academy Training Ground, a £10 million facility set
across 37 acres of land.
Together with three sets of dressing rooms, an
on-site gymnasium and a sports science unit the site also
features seven full sized football pitches plus one large
and one small synthetic pitch. The recent introduction of
floodlighting to our full-size synthetic pitch ensures that
year round training is possible and therefore adverse
weather conditions cause the minimum of disruption to
training schedules.
6
The training ground is managed and maintained to a high
standard by professional, experienced ground staff in line
with The Football League and FA regulations. Our IFSP
students’ training and sports therapy sessions take place
onsite alongside our Academy scholars.
Culture
One of the largest cities in England, Manchester is the
North West’s heart of culture and entertainment. The city
centre is bursting with shopping centres, parks, art
galleries and museums, theatres, and an array or
worldwide themed restaurants. It is also the home of two
of the world’s largest football clubs, Manchester United
and Manchester City as well as the National Football
Museum. Manchester city centre has recently undergone
a £200 million restoration, with excellent transportation
links from Macron Stadium.
More local to Macron Stadium is a hub of activity
including a popular retail and leisure park
accommodating numerous shops, a large cinema and
bowling alley and a variation of restaurants to choose
from. Adjacent to Macron Stadium is Bolton Arena, one
of only four Lawn Tennis Association High Performance Tennis Centres in the UK. It includes a superb
gymnasium with state of the art equipment with various
clubs and coaching classes to suit all interests, and
entertainment events available throughout the year.

International Football Studies Programme
The International Football Studies
Programme is Bolton Wanderers Football
Club - Institute of Sport’s most prestigious
education programme. It gives learners the
unique opportunity to experience
professional teaching and elite football
coaching in Premier League standard
sporting facilities.
The total immersion within a professional football
club enables players to develop, learning from
qualified teachers, coaches and their foreign
peers. Learners are coached and educated onsite
at Macron Stadium and Lostock Academy in
challenging, inspiring classes, with low
learner–to–teacher ratios and a faculty that
understands the demands of balancing education
and sport.
Learners stay with a host family or in a hotel
(additional cost) or learner style accommodation
during their entire stay. There is a dedicated
Welfare Officer who provides an invaluable
support system to ensure the learners have a
‘home away from home’ experience. Learners
graduate with a vast improvement in their game
along with a firm knowledge of a foreign language
and a keen sense of cultural understanding, but
more importantly with a recognised qualification
and memories that will last a lifetime!
Following assessment of suitability, students can study one of the following;

International Baccalaureate Career
Related Programme (IBCP)
What is the IBCP?
The IBCP is a bespoke career related study
package. It has been specifically designed by
Bolton Wanderers Institute of Sport to enable
learners to develop both academic and
vocational skills. The Programme’s focus is on
sport with the emphasis on professional football
practices. The IBCP is a world-wide recognised
qualification accepted by Universities and
employers alike. Below is an example of the
IBCP structure followed by a brief overview of
each of the components of the course:
• Thinking (ethical, critical, creative, problem
solving, lateral)
• Intercultural understanding (yours, other
cultures, language and cultural, intercultural
engagement)
• Communication (interpersonal skills, including
speaking, listening, the communication cycle,
formal writing, presentations, numeracy, IT)
• Personal development (emotional intelligence,
domains of EI, process skills)
The structure of IBCP Package
Career Related Subject:
Learners need to identify an issue of interest that they
would like to explore in greater depth that arises from,
their career related studies. The issue may come to
light, for example, in class discussions, through reading
or work experience. Learners identify an ethical dilemma
associated with the issue and then undertake research
on the ethical dilemma. The end project will highlight
the thinking and communication skills developed by
learners in their approaches to learning by looking at
both sides of an issue and then developing a
well-reasoned argument based on appropriate
supporting evidence. To build the project learners must
identify, analyse, critically discuss and evaluate their
chosen issue.
BTEC Level 3 in Sport (mandatory)
IB Standard Level DP Subjects:
Business & Management (mandatory)
& Psychology (mandatory)
Core Subjects: 1) Approaches to Learning
2) Reflective Project
3) Community & Service Learning
4) Language Development
Approaches to Learning
The focus is on our own BTEC Professionalism
Programme. Learners will explore, analyse, develop and
apply the skills, attitudes and behaviours associated
with world class standards and professional football
practices. Using a range of research methods learners
will investigate the factors that have influenced their
own paradigms.
12
Approaches to Learning will see learners develop
cognitive skills in the areas of:
Reflective Project
Examples
• The growth of file-sharing networks to
share copyrighted music
• Police tactics used during civil protests
or demonstrations
• Government support for increased production of
genetically modified (GM) food crops
Traditionally learners look for a topic related to the
core units of study on the IBCP.
Once the issue has been identified, the learners’
needs to explore an ethical dimension associated with
the issue. It is the ethical dimension of the issue, and
not the issue itself, which is the primary focus of
the reflective project.
The project can be in any format the learners choose
such as an essay, short film, PowerPoint presentation,
short play, series of photographs or a storyboard.
This project will typically be at the end of the learners’
first year but they must be informed at the start of the
course which will allow for sufficient preparation.
Community & Service Learning
Learners will have to be involved in community based
work experience or engagement, where they provide a
useful and beneficial service for their community.
The Community & Service Department delivers a range
of coaching qualifications which enable learners to
develop their skills in a community context. Our learners
put theory into practice by facilitating football
programmes with and for local and regional schools
and community groups. Furthermore, the service
learning format will allow individuals to develop their
knowledge, experiences and characters by undertaking
experiential work that are significantly related to
core topics within the IBCP.
Language Development
This unit aims to provide learners with the necessary
skills and intercultural understandings to communicate
in an environment where the language studied is
spoken. This process encourages learners to go
beyond the confines of the classroom, expanding their
awareness of the world and fostering respect for all
cultures. The Language Development study has no
formal end assessment, however, summative
assessment takes places throughout the programme
to ensure that progression is made.

The programme and staff have obviously contributed
to this. I am very happy and of course proud that
the feedback on Callum has been positive. We have
always felt that Callum was a well-mannered and
likeable individual so it’s nice to hear it from others,
particularly with there being such a dramatic change
in Callum’s personal circumstances in moving from
Dubai back to the UK.

written work, learn vocabulary and use English in
everyday life outside the classroom in order to practice
newly learnt skills.
Topics covered in the English classes aim to teach you
grammar and vocabulary linked to everyday and popular
subjects and will allow you to develop your ability to
communicate clearly. Examples of some of these topics
are sport, the body, illness and injury, families, everyday
routines, social conversations, ambitions and future
plans. An option would be (depending on your ability)
to work towards and complete a KET or PET
examination that will involve reading, writing, listening
and speaking and all sections must be passed in order
to gain the certificate.
KET
This is the basic level of qualification that shows you
can use English to communicate in simple situations. It
shows you have made a good start in learning English
and that you can introduce yourself and answer basic
18
questions and personal details, interact with English
speakers who speak clearly and write short,
simple notes.
PET
This is an intermediate level qualification. It shows you
are able to use your English language skills for work,
study and travel. The exam will show that you can
understand the main points of straightforward
instructions or public announcements. You can deal
with most of the situations you might meet, ask simple
questions and take part in factual conversations in a
work environment. You will also be able to write letters/
emails or make notes on familiar matters.
What can I expect to achieve at the
end of my course?
On successful completion of your course you will be
presented with the internationally recognised University
of Cambridge certificate.
Entry requirements
You will complete an initial assessment in order to
assess your suitability for the course and to identify
your current level of English and the areas needing
improvement.
BWFCIOS’ team of FA and UEFA qualified
professional coaches are dedicated to creating
the ultimate coaching experience for students.
Through the week you will receive the five day
coaching experience with a programme based
around our Academy philosophy. We aim to
improve every student to their maximum
potential and students will be coached in all
aspects of the game. Irrespective of ability,
students will be pushed to their limit and will
receive regular feedback along with formal
written reviews to help them develop.
“
Professionalism is at the core of our vision and
ethos. As part of the BWFCIOS methodology, it’s
crucial to develop more than high performing
student athletes. We strive to develop leaders
with a strong moral fibre.

Coaching
BWFC INSTITUTE OF SPORT
Fixtures
All students will participate in weekly competitive
fixtures against local and national teams. Talented
individuals that are identified by our senior coaches as
showing the potential to excel will be given the
opportunity to participate at the next level in order
to ensure that students fulfil their potential. This will
include playing in fixtures against the BWFC Academy
in order to benchmark their progress.
Strength and Conditioning
With the physical demands of the game ever
increasing, students will be coached weekly to build up
their stamina and endurance to maintain a high level of
aerobic fitness. This will include regular fitness testing
so students can benchmark their progress. Students
will also receive personal training plans to help them
develop their fitness and strength, in order to allow
them to compete and increase their physical presence
on the field. To ensure students are given the maximum
opportunity to develop their physical attributes that are
required for professional athletes, a gym membership
is included in the programme to encourage students to
show dedication in their free time.
Diet and Nutrition
Diet and nutrition play an essential part in an athlete’s
preparation and training regime. The provision of a
well-balanced diet is equally important for growing
young students. For these reasons Bolton Wanderers
Institute of Sport includes a programme which
educates students in the benefits of a healthy lifestyle
in order to gain maximum results on and off the pitch.
Performance Analysis
Performance Analysis is an important part to ensure
that students reach their potential. This includes
statistical analysis of fitness testing, reviewing match
footage and training regimes.

Welfare
The welfare of students whilst living in the UK
is paramount. We have a Welfare Officer who
is dedicated to help you settle in quickly, make
friends and support you throughout your course.
Our experienced Welfare Officer offers
confidential support on any matters concerning
students including personal, social, academic
and financial issues.
Airport Meet and Greet
On your arrival in the UK you will be met at the
airport by an identified member of staff to ensure that
you are given a warm welcome.
Induction
We recognise that on arrival in Bolton it is important
that you have a chance to orientate yourself in order to
become familiar with your new surroundings.
The induction will provide you with all the basic
information you need. Your induction pack will include
key information on medical help, mobile phones, banks,
shops, restaurants, etc. The induction will also take you
through key elements of what to expect over the
coming year in terms of education, football
and social life.
Excursions
The Welfare Officer organises a series of information
and social events throughout the year. These events are
specifically designed to assist with bonding and team
building which is at the heart of football or any
team sport.
Enrichment
20
As well as the social events there will be further
enrichment activities that will give you the opportunity
to engage with the wider community of Bolton. This will
broaden your own life skills, help build your confidence
and give you the chance to work with people of all ages
from a whole variety of cultural backgrounds. These life
skills will help you in your own growth and development
into becoming a rounded and mature adult.
Pastoral Care
Pastoral support is offered by our Welfare Officer and
there is always an opportunity to have a confidential
conversation with regards to any matter that might be
concerning you. Additionally we have a Chaplain who is
available to offer any pastoral care and additional
support if you are going through a challenging time.
Host Families and Alternative Accommodation
Great care, time and consideration is taken in vetting
and choosing our host families that work with us on the
programme. We have a great relationship with all the
families that we work with and each one is committed
to helping our students have a great experience. We
usually place a minimum of two students per family
which helps create a great bond. Our Welfare Officer
works closely the families and makes regular visits.
We also provide alternative accommodation options for
our older students for an additional premium. This gives
students the opportunity to live alongside other
students with a little more independent living, helping
them to develop and mature into adults. As with many
students who intend to attend a university this is a great
way for students to stretch themselves and become
more independent. Pastoral and welfare support is
offered at the same level to help those students who
are placed in this way.
Safeguarding
We take safeguarding very seriously in everything we
do. We recognise that here in the UK a student is a
minor until the age of 18. We have strict policies in
place and carry out any necessary risk assessments for
all the activities the students participate in. We have a
number of Safeguarding Officers connected to the
programme to ensure the wellbeing of all our students.
All the necessary safeguarding checks at the
appropriate level take place on all our staff and host
families and we carry out regular training.
“
We expect a high discipline standard from all our
students in order to assist in their development, and to
help promote commitment and security. A disciplined
life is key within the game of football and within any
educational institution. It is therefore important that
every student respects and lives by the Code of
Conduct that they sign on arrival. Wearing the Bolton
Wanderers badge means that each student is a
representative of the Club and needs to conduct
themselves in an appropriate manner at all times.
Sanctions regarding the lack of discipline and the
breaking of the Code of Conduct will be put in place
and outlined to students and parents alike, from whom
we ask for full co-operation in supporting the
necessary Code of Conduct.
We are one giant family on campus, regardless of background or culture.
We are there to support and encourage one another.

Career Progressions and Pathways
BWFCIOS ensures guidance and the
development of strategies for progression routes
and career pathways are a high priority. Our
education and coaching team of staff work with
each learner to plan a clear pathway for life after
they’ve completed the IFSP. Whether they’d like
to continue their academic studies at a higher
level in a university within the UK, in their
respective home country, or in another country
entirely, then we will assist them in achieving
that goal. Alternatively, if a learner wishes enter
the work force directly after they’ve completed
their studies, we will provide career guidance to
help them achieve this.
We have a large selection of current UK University
prospectuses which are openly available to all
learners throughout the year and they are encouraged
to research courses and progression routes constantly
to ensure that higher education is at the forefront of
their minds.
For the purpose of supporting learners through
desired progression routes we are an accredited centre
through UCAS. This enables us to follow a specific
22
tracking system to ensure learners are assisted in their
pathways whether into higher education or employment.
In addition to this we are able to provide professional
references to support progressive learners.
Learners complete the FA Coaching Certificates as part
of the programme too, providing a strong pathway for
them if they decide to pursue a more football related
career. This ultimately provides an additional optional
pathway which can be tailored in alongside other
academic and vocational qualifications.
BWFCIOS also possesses strong links with the
University of Bolton who are an esteemed
establishment who provide a range of specialised and
comprehensive routes into higher education.
Furthermore all of our IFSP learners are guaranteed an
interview onto a degree programme to encourage them
through higher education.
We will ensure that we provide learners with every
opportunity to achieve, progress and complete the
IFSP with an extensive set of transferable skills coupled
with highly sought after qualifications to enable our
learners to enter any sector, sporting or otherwise.
