Summer camp volunteers
needed
The City of El Cajon Recreation Department is looking
for young inspiring youth
who would like to volunteer
in our summer camp program. Typically volunteers
will be asked to work Monday
through Friday from 8:30
a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Dates and
times may vary based on the
camp and needs. The ideal
candidate must be between
the ages of 14 - 17 years old,
is energetic, has an outgoing
personality, and is eager to
learn. Volunteers will work
directly with staff in a variety
of themed camps such as:
Fun in the Sun, Indoor Soccer, Art, Gymnastics, Dance,
Basketball, Dodgeball and
much more. This is also a
great opportunity for you to
fulfill your school required
community service hours or
gain real life job experience.

the 100 Hours Honoring 100
Years Volunteer Program. As
we celebrate our Centennial
Year and reflect on our rich
City history, it is important to
recognize that it is the people
who make El Cajon the “Valley of Opportunity,” including
our volunteers. The 100 Hours
Honoring 100 Years Volunteer
Program was developed to
provide an opportunity for El
Cajon residents and others
involved in the community to
be recognized for their service
in honor of El Cajon’s Centennial. Local organizations and
groups are always looking for
dedicated, caring individuals
who want to make a difference
in the community. Through
this volunteer program, the City
will recognize the volunteer service performed in the El Cajon
community during the Centennial year (November 2012
through November 2013).

whether as an individual, or
in a group on behalf of an organization, community group,

Sharing a piece of history
Centennial Moment: Highway
set-back battle looms in 1922
Below is an excerpt from a
brochure published in 1961
in honor of the City’s 50 th
anniversary of incorporation:
“50 Years of Progress.” The
brochure chronicles events in
the City by each year, from
incorporation in 1912 through
present day which at that time,
was 1961. This Centennial
moment focuses specifically
on the year 1922.
T
he total rainfall for this
year was better than 14
inches. The dirt streets became
so mired with mud that it was
considered too dangerous for
the school vehicles to operate
on them. It was decided that the
school vacation time would be
extended for another week or
more, until the roads became
safe again. There was not a
single protest from the children.
When school did resume,
two ladies, a Mrs. McKinney
and a Mrs. Eva Stuver, started
a small hot lunch stand close
by the El Cajon Grammar
School. They provided an
excellent fare for the children.
The remarkable thing about
Main Street, El Cajon.
the venture was that not a
single dish or drink cost the
children more than 5 cents.
Rumors started to be heard
along Main Street business
district that the State Highway
Department was going to ask
for sufficient set-back along
the street for full sized sidewalks. This would mean that
the buildings would have to be
moved back, or the fronts of
the stores removed back to the
set-back line.
Some of the businessmen
claimed that they had heard
that in the case of a majority
of property owners objecting to
this set back and had a second
floor, they would permit the
upper floor to extend over the
sidewalks and be supported by
pillars or arch ways. This was
all to change the face of Main
Street in the future.

More than 750 people attended the 23rd Annual Vintage Alpine fundraiser held
May 5 at Summers Past Farms
in Flinn Springs, California.
The Kiwanis Club of Alpine
Foundation, Inc. is a non-profit
organization and all proceeds
from this amazing annual wine,
beer and food tasting event will
be used to provide services and
programs for children in the
San Diego area.
“Vintage Alpine is a wonderful event, and our success
comes from the club members
working alongside great wineries, breweries and restaurants
— all are upstanding community partners,” said event
Chairman Art Armagost. “We
are thrilled to host events like
this, and all the money raised
supports children in the community.”

Rewards for perfect attendance

Midway Presentation
The Crest Library, located
at 105 Juanita Lane in El
Cajon, will host U.S. Navy
The USS Midway presentation is part of SDCL’s Older
Americans Month series. Commissioned a week after the
end of World War II, the USS
Midway embarked on an unprecedented 47-year odyssey
that set new standards in naval
aviation. More than 225,000
Americans took part in the odyssey that ended after Midway
served as the Persian Gulf flagship in Desert Storm. The USS
Midway is the longest-serving
U.S. Navy carrier of the 20th
century and was the largest ship
in the world in 1945-1955.

Health & Safety Fair on May
11 in El Cajon.
The community outreach
effort of the Neighbor-to-Neighbor Program of the First Presbyterian Church of El Cajon drew
a steady stream of people to the
500 block of Farragut Circle.
Mother Goose and local
princesses helped welcome the
early crowds.

Care Library of the Grossmont
Healthcare District in La Mesa.
“This has to be the friendliest
fair ever.”
Children exercised at Scouting 320’s obstacle course, made
Mother’s Day gifts, rode in a
little fire truck and learned about
bike racing and other sports.
Adults enjoyed free neck,
shoulder and back rubs; had
fun laughing with yoga, took
advantage of free health screenings and explored dozens of
ways to healthier, safer living.
The sale of homemade baked
goods and money donated by
The Springs retirement center,
which sold hot dogs and lemonade, raised almost $500 for

Wellness Backpack Program,
according to event Chairwoman Sandra Hood.
Alpine History Day June 1
Celebrate our history with
the Alpine Historical Society
at the thirteenth Annual Alpine
History Day on Saturday, June
1 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at
the Museum on 2116 Tavern
Road. There will be something
for everyone.
Tour the two pioneer houses
and Carriage House with new
displays of the Justin Gruelle
paintings, the 107-year-old
buggy, the farming tools and
equipment and more. Learn
about beekeeping and sewing
on a treadle machine. See the
Model T Ford on display. Hear
the third graders read their winning essays on Alpine history
and receive their awards.
A delicious lunch will be
served of homemade chili,
salad, garlic bread, drinks and

Fire updates
O
n Saturday afternoon May 11, in the 13000 block of
East Mapleview St,. multiple fire agencies using ground
and aerial attack controlled an approximately six-acre
open space fire near a number of homes. Fire agencies from
multiple agencies including Lakeside, Santee, El Cajon and Cal
Fire along with two water dropping helicopters fought the fire
which started at the top of the hill moving downhill toward Vista
Del Capitan where additional engines were stationed.
Lakeside Fire Chief Andy Parr said the home owners had
done a very good job of clearing the 100 ft. defensible space
around their homes. Lakeside fire fighters have been stressing
the importance of defensible space around homes. For questions

Cedar Fire Memorial
The planned Cedar Fire Memorial will commemorate the 10
year anniversary of the 2003 Cedar Fire. A committee made up
of the Lakeside Fire department and members of the community
would like to hold a ground breaking ceremony on October 26,
2013. The plan is to locate the new memorial site on the property
of the new Lakeside Fire Station 2 located at 12216 Lakeside Ave.
The committee will hold their next meeting in the end of May.
Edgemoor 100th Birthday
The temperatures in the high nineties did not keep people away
from the 100th birthday of the Edgemoor Barn. Museum tours
provided visitors a peek in to the past with exhibits depicting the
history of dairy and farming activities. The Edgemoor Dairy Barn
was admitted to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.
Edgemoor Barn Museum hours are Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to
12 p.m. except the second Tuesday of each month. The museum
is also open the third Saturday of each month from 10 a.m. to
2 p.m. Edgemoor Barn is located at 9200 Magnolia Ave. Call

Inspiration
Now that’s news I can really use

I
have a terrible confession to get off my chest.
It is a secret I have tried
to hide from family and friends
for years. Up to this point, I
have been fairly successful in
hiding this but I believe the
time has come to clear the air.
Having a secret is a terrible
burden to bear especially
around people who know you.
You always run the risk that
somebody is going to find out
and then tell everybody and
then the whole world knows
your secret. The purpose of a
secret is so that nobody knows.
If it gets out, it is no longer a
secret.
I even tried to keep this
from the Gracious Mistress of
the Parsonage, which comes
as close to walking on water
as I have ever come. Several
times, she has come close to
finding out this deep seated
secret of mine.
Even though this is risky
business, I need to make a full
confession. Someone has said
that confession is good for the
soul, but I am not quite sure.
My confession is this, and
please do not hate me because
of it, I love to take afternoon
naps.
some people refer to as the
“power nap.” The problem is
I live amongst a people that
believe if you take a nap in
the afternoon you are either
very young are getting very
old. The former is not the issue, and I will take issue with
the latter.
I must admit that there was a
time in my life when I did not
take time out for naps. In fact,
I had a hard time going to bed
before midnight. I hated going
to bed and could not wait until
morning came so I could jump
out of bed and get back to
work. Do not get me wrong,
I was not a workaholic. I just
liked what I was doing.
I am not sure when it started
but I noticed a few years ago I
was not resisting going to bed
like before. I did not fight it is
much as I used to. If the truth
were known, hopefully it won’t
be, as soon as my head hit the
pillow the Sandman started
doing his thing.
It was not long before I
started sneaking 40 winks in
the afternoon.
I distinctly remember one
afternoon when my wife came
in and said, “You’re not taking
a nap, are you?”
There, I said it. I am not sure
what it did for my soul but I
do not feel any happier about
making this confession.
I know lying is not a good
thing, especially to your
spouse. Sometimes when you
are in a fixed such as I was in at
that moment, the truth scampers in the opposite direction.
I am a firm believer in what
“No,” I stuttered as she
looked at me. “I was just
meditating.”
“I guess everybody snores
when they’re meditating,” she
said with a smirk on her face.
From then on, it was a
game trying to get in a nap
without getting into trouble. I
did find out that after one of
my “power naps” I was able to
do a lot more work. However,
I kept that bit of information
to myself.
Then my whole world
changed.
Don’t you like it when something happens proving you are
right? It does not happen very
often to me, when it does, I
relish it like a freshly baked
Apple Fritter.
I happened to be watching
some television news program. I confess I was half
dozing and watching at the
same time, but suddenly they
said something that got my full
salute attention.
According to the news story,
and they can’t put it on TV
unless it’s true, right? But according to this story, research
showed that there was a great
deal of benefits associated
with afternoon naps.
That was enough for me
and I, like the gentleman I am,
called for my wife to come and
watch this news story with me.
Some things in life should be
shared and this was one of
them.

Sylvia Klara Amanda Olsson-Johnson
Aug. 24, 1928 - May 11, 2013
Born August 24, 1928 in Sweden. Died on May 11,
2013 at 11 a.m. in Escondido, Ca. In 1955 she came
to the United States and was married that same year to
Odd Simonsen, who was from Norway. That marriage
ended in divorce in 1968. In 1971, she married her
second husband James (Jimmy) Johnson. The couple
was married until his death in 1994.
She has three sisters and relatives in Sweden. Sylvia
moved back to Sweden in 2006, but then later returned
to the United States after only living there for year after
she realized that America was where she had lived for
over 51 years and was truly her home. Sylvia is survived
by two step-children, John and Richard; four stepgrand-children - James, Michelle, Jennifer and Brian;
and three step-great-grandchildren, Savana, Sydney
and Cameron.
Afternoon naps drastically
reduce the danger of heart
attack and improve a person’s
memory.
“So,” I said to my wife after
the story, “what do you think
of that?”
She smiled and looked at me
and said, “Well, it must work
because you never forget to
take a nap.”
I will forgive her for the hilarious laughter following her
remark. Just so you know, the
laughter did not come from
me. I may have been smiling
on the outside but I was snorting on the inside.
For years, I thought taking
an afternoon nap was rather
beneficial. Now I have the
proof and I can indulge in a
daily “power nap” without
feeling any sense of guilt at
all. I love it when I have been
proven right.
Now I take great delight
in one of my favorite Bible
passages.
“Come unto me, all ye that
labor and are heavy laden, and
I will give you rest. Take my
yoke upon you, and learn of
me; for I am meek and lowly
in heart: and ye shall find rest
unto your souls” (Matthew
11:28-29).
A friend of mine often says,
“Come apart and rest a while
or you’ll just come apart.” An
afternoon nap has unashamedly become part of my daily
activity.

Out and about in the County
An Alpine History Mystery
Our mystery man was born in Indiana 124 years ago into
the family of a famous American painter. The arts seemed to
run in the family. His brother John was a famous writer and
creator of popular children’s toys that are still enjoyed today.
The subject of this myster was also a writer as well as an artist.
One of his early literary works is well known in Alpine. His
illustrations have been published world-wide in children’s
books, but he is also recognized for his watercolors and oil
paintings of murals, landscapes, individual portraits and vintage aircraft. In fact, he was commissioned to paint several
murals for the Works Progress Administration and from 1936
to 1939 painted several murals that were exhibited at the New
York World’s Fair. Later he was commissioned to create the
“Early Birds” mural which was on display for several years at
the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC.
Our mystery man moved to Alpine in 1955 with his wife,
Mabel. He had a studio in their home on Lilac Lane. It is there
that he created 14 nearly life size paintings depicting the Stations of the Cross for the Queen of Angels Church in Alpine.
Perhaps you know this man - this writer, painter, and illustrator of books, cartoons and covers for sheet music. His name,
artifacts from his studio and examples of his work can be found
at the Alpine History Museum. Come visit to learn more about
him at our next museum open house on May 25 & 26, or at
the Alpine History Day on June 1. If you can’t join us then,
watch for our article next month when we will give you his
name and present you with a new Alpine History Mystery.

May 18: La Mesa Soap Box Derby. San Diego East County
boys and girls ages 7-17 who have competed in Soap Box
Derby Races are encouraged to enter the Drew Ford/Kiwanis
Club of La Mesa Annual All-American Soap Box Derby. The
race course on Junior High Drive adjacent to La Mesa Middle
School. Winners of the May 18 Local Race will be eligible to be
sent to the National All-American Soap Box Derby in Akron,
Ohio, which takes place during the last week of July each year.

Club of La Mesa for the past 13 years, the Annual Local AllAmerican Soap Box Derby is open to boys and girls ages 7 to
17 who reside in East County. The heats will get underway

continue to the trophy presentations in the early afternoon.

the Department of Industrial Relations are
referenced but not printed in said publication.

Any contractor who is awarded the contract

City Council at a meeting subsequent to the

The City Council reserves the right to reject
any and all bids if it considers it necessary
to do so for the public good, and it may
reject the bid of any bidder who has been
delinquent or unfaithful in any former contract
with the City.
In all contracts subject to this part where
federal funds are involved, no bid submitted
shall be invalidated by the failure of the
bidder to be licensed in accordance with the
laws of this state. However, at the time the
contract is awarded, the contractor shall be
properly licensed in accordance with the laws
of this state. The first payment for work or
material under any contract shall not be made
unless and until the Registrar of Contractors
verifies to the agency that the records of the
Contractors State License Board indicate

bidder or contractor not so licensed shall be

Housing Element. Public workshops on the Housing Element were held on July 18, 2012,
where public input was received. Staff also conducted public outreach at community events
between July, 2012 and November, 2012. The input received was incorporated into the Draft
Housing Element which is now available for review. The Draft Housing Element is available at

The El Cajon City Council will hold a public
hearing at 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, May 28,
2013, in the City Council Chambers, 200
Civic Center Way, El Cajon, CA, for the
following item:
CARD ROOMS ORDINANCE SECOND
AMENDMENT. This is a City-initiated proposal
to amend Title 17 (Zoning) of the El Cajon
Municipal Code for the purpose of making the
regulations pertaining to the playing of cards
and similar games in downtown more flexible
to accommodate the needs of organizations
and restaurants, but still ensure that there
is not an overconcentration of card rooms
downtown, and make related changes on this
issue that are applicable citywide.
On March 11, 2013, the Planning Commission
adopted Resolution No. 10723 recommending
City Council approval of an amendment to the
Zoning Code pertaining to card rooms.
The public is invited to attend and participate
in this public hearing. If you challenge the
matter in court, you may be limited to raising
only those issues you or someone else raised
at the public hearing described in this notice
or in written correspondence delivered to the
Council at, or prior to, the public hearing. The
