The bi-colored flowers are deep violetpurple to almost copper and have a touch of lemon yellow. Perennials Perennials Bergenia cordifolia Heartleaf Distinctive glossy, heart-shaped leathery leaves are evergreen, turning warm, ruddy shades in the fall. Prefers rich, humousy soil that retains moisture and would rather be spared the midday sun.Our humid summers sometimes makes Bergenia appealing to slugs, so some control may be warranted. Boltonia Zones 5 - 9 Zones 5 - 9 Boltonia asteroides ‘Pink Beauty’ Bolton’s Aster A multitude of soft pink 1" daisies are carried like a cloud on this 3-5' tall native plant that will reach 4' wide. The first flowers open in August with gray-green foliage that never gets mildew, and looks marvelous among dark evergreens, by itself, or paired with ‘Snowbank’. Great cut flower. Plant 18" apart. It has handsome, round, textured leaves that hold up well in the garden into the fall. It does well in semi-shade or full sun. Its 18" height makes it ideal for a woodland setting, for the front of the border, or as a ground cover. Try it with Heuchera Plum Pudding, Alchemilla mollis, and a yellow Hosta such as ‘Kabitan’. Zones 4 - 7 F Brunnera macrophylla ‘Dawson’s White’ Variegated Dwarf Anchusa We have resisted growing a variegated Brunnera until we were satisfied that the white would hold up well on the foliage. The heart-shaped leaves of this cultivar have a wide irregular white edge that stays attractive in the moist cool soil it loves best at 15". The irresistible clusters of tiny blue Forget-Me-Not flowers from April to June make this a must-have. Plant 18" apart. Zones 4 - 7 Calamintha nepeta ‘White Cloud’ Calamint Aptly named. Literally clouds of tiny white flowers keep this tough perennial working well throughout our hot, humid summertime. Calamintha has small minty fragrant leaves, blooms from June through September, on upright stems to 18". Give it the well-drained soil it prefers. Use it in the rock garden or border where you need white to separate bright colors or blend with Fpastels. Plant 18" apart. Campanula Zones 4 - 8 Campanula garganica ‘Dickson’s Gold’ Bellflower Low mounds of heart shaped serrated lime green to gold leaves are quite eye catching. Grows 4-6" with lavender blue flowers appearing around late May to June. After flowering, it can benefit by having a light sheering to neaten it up and perhaps induce rebloom at a later time. Campanula poscharskyana ‘Blue Waterfall’ Serbian Bellflower Captivating dark blue, bell-shaped flowers with a white center, appear mostly in JuneJuly over green cascading foliage, perfect for dry walls, rock gardens, containers, the edges of a path, or in the front of the border. Zones 4 - 7 Campanula x ‘Birch Hybrid’ Bellflower A profuse blooming groundcover, nodding lavender-blue flowers begin to appear in late spring and, with regular deadheading, will continue to bloom into late summer. Canna Lily Zones 7 -10 Zones 7 -10 Canna ‘Ermine’ Canna Lily This 3' tall, green leafed Canna, is topped all summer with very large, creamy white flowers, flushed with pale yellow toward the center of each flower. Its large leaves resemble those of the banana plant but are not so large. Canna Lily is found in all tropical areas, especially in moist places along streams, springs, ditches, and the margins of woods. It may also be found in wet temperate, mountainous regions. It is easy to recognize because it is commonly cultivated in flower gardens in the United States. The large and much branched rootstocks are full of edible starch. The younger parts may be finely chopped and then boiled or pulverized into a meal. Mix in the young shoots of palm cabbage for flavoring. Canna ‘Baby Girl Pink’ Dwarf Canna Lily Sweet pink flowers on 24-30" stalks will keep blooming from spring until frost when provided with adequate moisture and full sun. Plant 18" apart F Chelone Zones 5 - 9 Chelone glabra White Turtlehead The 1–2" white snapdragon-like flowers of the White Turtlehead open, just a few at a time, in late summer and autumn, and are composed of two lips like a turtle’s head. A hardy native, it prefers moist soil, is 2–3' in height with glossy foliage, and attracts butterflies. Try it in a moist meadow setting or woodland. Widely grown as a cut flower in Europe. Zones 5 - 8 Ceratostigma plumbaginoides Lead Wort One of the most rewarding, colorful, and easy-to-grow perennials, Plumbago reaches just 12" in height and forms a green ground cover, covered with clusters of gorgeous peacock blue flowers from August into October. The foliage turns deep mahogany in fall, but the brilliant flowers keep opening, which makes an eye-catching show. Infrequent flowers are calla lily-like, yellowishwhite and hidden by the foliage. Combine with Cannas such as ‘Pretoria’ or ‘Tropical Red’ for a knockout combination. Coreopsis Convallaria Zones 4 - 9 Convallaria majalis Lily-of-the-Valley The old-fashioned garden favorite is a fantastic shady ground cover looking spectacular in a mass with its fragrant white bells in April and May. At about 8" in height, plants are easy to grow and will last a lifetime. A layer of organic compost applied in December or January will insure a healthy, prolific performance next spring. Try it with Lady Fern, Dicentra ‘Eximia’, and Pulmonaria. Plant 12" apart F Coreopsis is an easy to grow garden favorite that provides color throughout the season. A relative of the sunflower, Coreopsis is worth planting for the cheerful sight of their springtime flowers. Coreopsis provide an abundant source of cut flowers. Coreopsis is a popular perennial that forms a clump 1½’ to 4' in height. The daisy-like flowers, 2"-3" in diameter, are yellow to deep gold and may be single or double. They are carried singly on stiff wiry stems with dark green leaves and blooms from June to September. Growth is vigorous. Coreopsis tolerates dry conditions and ordinary soil. Since it can tolerate soil of low fertility and withstand intense heat, Coreopsis will succeed in urban environments and in roof gardens. Coreopsis is also able to tolerate salt and wind in a seaside garden. Coreopsis grandiflora ‘Early Sunrise’ Tickseed This award-winner here and in Europe covers itself with golden-yellow, semidouble blooms from early summer into the fall, reaches 18" in height, is carefree, and provides a wealth of cut flowers, especially if spent blooms are removed. It won’t need staking either, as other tall Coreopsis do. For pleasing foliage shape and a hot color combination, try combining ‘Early Sunrise’ with Crocosmia and Japanese Blood Grass. The large blooms start out yellow with a red eye that bleeds out onto the petals as the season progresses and becoming the dominant color in the fall.
