Baptisia
Perennials
Baptisia australis
False Indigo
Perennial of theYear 2010
This durable, long-lived native
perennial produces weather-resistant,
soft gray-green foliage 3–4' high,
topped in June by intense blue
flowers that last for weeks, followed
by prominent dark seedpods, which
all-told, make an attractive presence
throughout the summer. Great on its

Carolina Moonlight False Indigo
This perennial hybrid has spires of
buttery yellow flowers in late spring/
early summer and beautiful blue-green
foliage. It is considered the southern
substitute for the much sought after
lupine. It has an adaptable, easy-togrow nature and makes a great
companion for other rugged plants such
as ornamental grasses. It grows 3-4’.

‘Midnight Prairieblues™’
False Indigo
Sturdy and erect stems support the
stunning deep blue flowers. At 4’ feet
tall and with a spread of up to 5’,
‘Midnight’ will fill a large space in the
perennial border. Plant in full sun and
well-drained soil. Try with its prairie
companions such as Echinacea,
Monarda or Panicum. PP #20432
Plant 48" apart.
Zones 4 - 9
Baptisia x ‘Purple Smoke’
False Indigo
A chance union of Baptisia australis
and Baptisia alba produced this
vigorous baptisia. With charcoal
stems (when mature), gray green
foliage, topping out around 4’ and
dusty violet flowers that resemble
lupines, you will grow to love this
perennial. Once established, it thrives
in lean well-drained soil and will be
quite drought tolerant.
Plant 24" apart.
Zones 4 - 9
Baptisia x ‘Twilight Prairieblues™’
False Indigo
A vigorous heat-tolerant hybrid of two
native prairie species that produces
many flower spikes on a single plant.
The bi-colored flowers are deep violetpurple to almost copper and have a
touch of lemon yellow. This Baptisia
won’t sing the blues when planted as a
single specimen for its attractive 4-5'
tall blue-green foliage. PP#19011

Begonia grandis
Hardy Begonia
If you are a shade gardener, here’s yet
another option for long bloom time
and attractive foliage. The delicate
pale pink flowers of the Hardy
Begonia are carried above the large,
rich green leaves from July to frost.
Not surprising is the plant’s
preference for rich, moist soil. Try
the 2' mound of Hardy Begonia with
contrasting fine-textured ferns or the
burgundy foliage of Epimedium
‘Rubrum’. Plant 18" apart.

Hardy Begonia
As functional as the Hardy Begonia has
proven in shady landscape spots, we
think the white-flowering version is
important to offer as well. Grows 15 18”. As long blooming and bright as the
white version is, its leaves seem to
combine with a host of other foliage
textures and shapes from Astilbes and
Hostas to Polygonatums and
Convallarias.

Perennials
The Canna Lily is a coarse perennial herb. The plant grows from a
large, thick, underground rootstock that is edible. Its large leaves
resemble those of the banana plant but are not so large.
Canna Lily is found in all tropical areas, especially in moist places
along streams, springs, ditches, and the margins of woods. It may
also be found in wet temperate, mountainous regions. It is easy to
recognize because it is commonly cultivated in flower gardens in the
United States.
The large and much branched rootstocks are full of edible starch.
The younger parts may be finely chopped and then boiled or
pulverized into a meal. Mix in the young shoots of palm cabbage for
flavoring.
Canna ‘Baby Girl Pink’
Dwarf Canna Lily
Sweet pink flowers on 24-30"
stalks will keep blooming from
spring until frost when provided
with adequate moisture and full
sun. This dwarf Canna will
provide color all summer in a
large container on the patio or
deck. Pinch off spent blooms to
promote new flowers. Plant
18" apart.
Canna ‘Australia’
Canna Lily
This Canna sports a bright red flower
in the summer, atop 4-5’ foliage. The
deep burgundy-black leaves have a
satin-like sheen, and the intense color
holds superbly during the summer
heat. It will make an excellent
centerpiece for your patio planter.

Coreopsis is an easy to grow garden favorite that
provides color throughout the season. A relative
of the sunflower, Coreopsis is worth planting for
the cheerful sight of their springtime flowers.
Coreopsis provide an abundant source of cut

forms a clump 1½’ to 4' in height. The daisy-like
flowers, 2"-3" in diameter, are yellow to deep gold
and may be single or double. They are carried
singly on stiff wiry stems with dark green leaves
and blooms from June to September. Growth is
vigorous. Coreopsis tolerates dry conditions and
ordinary soil. Since it can tolerate soil of low
fertility and withstand intense heat, Coreopsis
will succeed in urban environments and in roof
gardens. Coreopsis is also able to tolerate salt
