SIMON KENTON COUNCIL, BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA Winter Issue 2016 Volume 18 Quarterly A Look Back At A Year In Scouting! T h e S c o u t e r | W i n t e r 2 0 1 6 2 Friends of Scouting 2016 to Highlight Outdoor Programming Happy New Year! Once again, it’s time to turn the page to a new calendar and for some, time to turn over a new leaf. Scouts and families in the Simon Kenton Council will find that we are also turning a leaf or two – especially with our camp facilities and programming. We have invested over $330,000 in our four camp properties in capital improvements, and even more is planned! In addition, groups associated with our camps have contributed labor and have made improvements beyond our council’s investment. All of this work is designed to help attract and retain Scouts and leaders from our council in our camps. Some of the improvements include new water lines and cabins at Camp Lazarus, a total renovation to the Camp Falling Rock shower house (the men’s shower was updated before the 2015 camp season; the youth and women’s sides were completed this fall), Block House flooring, bunks and mattresses at Camp Oyo and repairs to the ranger’s home, new swimming area dock and new staff cabins at Chief Logan Scout Reservation. Additional projects are planned at each camp and will be scheduled as funds are raised. These improvements – past, present and future – are all part of a process we completed in 2015 to ensure that we use our camps effectively and efficiently and invest strategically in camp development. Programmatically, we’ll see some changes at camps this summer as well. Webelos camp will move to Camp Falling Rock, which will mean fewer weeks of Boy Scout summer camp there. We’ll be working to expand our capacity at Chief Logan Scout Reservation over the next couple of years to accommodate this change. Camp Lazarus will remain home for many (not all) of our district Cub Scout day camps, and will continue to host district and council activities as well as year-round unit camping. Now is the time to start thinking about your pack, troop or crew’s summer experience. We hope you will take advantage of the improvements we are making. All the best for a safe and successful 2016! I’d love to hear how Scouting is making a difference in your child’s life. Email me at [email protected]. Jeffrey Moe Scout Executive/CEO T h e S c o u t e r | W i n t e r 2 0 1 6 The annual LOCAL fundraising campaign known as “Friends of Scouting” has kicked-off for 2016. In November, over 80 dedicated volunteer leaders attended a campaign Kick-Off at the SKC Leadership Development Center where the 2016 effort was introduced. Among some of the key facets for the coming year is a re-focus on what Scouting does best. Outdoor Programming. This year’s campaign highlights SKC’s year-round camping facilities that teach young people the leadership skills needed to excel in life. Along with raising money to support camp operations, new recognition items were introduced. For 2016, the council shoulder patch features Camp Oyo, and the belt buckle highlights Camp Falling Rock. The next four years will rotate recognition of each of our camp properties. Celebrate 12 Years of Friends of Scouting Over the past 11 years, the Friends of Scouting fundraising campaign has recognized donors with a commorative shoulder patch that represents one of the Twleve Points of the Scout Law. Make a $150 donation to the 2016 Simon Kenton Council Friends of Scouting and receive the last patch in the collection. Make a $1,000 donation (paid in full) to receive all 12 patches in the collection, 2005 through 2016, which are limited to 50 sets available. 3 Exciting Start to Scouting for Food Scouts make a big difference every year when they collect food for local food banks across central Ohio. And this year was no different for the Good Turn initiative, Scouting For Food. Our partners at ABC 6 / Fox 28 helped us kickoff this month long effort and we were able to collect over 1,000 pounds of nonperishable items to donate to the Mid-Ohio Food Bank in just a few short hours. Scouts kept the momentum going all month long with 105 units participating - 15 more units than last year! Have you reported your Scouts’ results? If not, we can help! Visit www.SKCscouts.org/SFF. 2015 Popcorn Sale Grows Again! For the third consecutive year, the Simon Kenton Council popcorn sale has grown in total dollars raised to support Scouting. Currently $2.7 million of retail popcorn was sold in the Simon Kenton Council. Of that, over $850,000 went directly into the operating funds for local Packs and Troops. Here are some other highlights: • 355 Packs and Troops sold popcorn in 2015 to fund Scouting programs. • Show and Sell (consignment sales) grew to over $2 million for the first time. • The entire Show and Sell order was delivered on 13 semi-truck loads. • Thanks to a generous donation from Prologis, the SKC metro warehouse was 105,000 sq. ft. of popcorn radness. A volunteer warehouse team of many served eight districts from the metro warehouse. • Over $100,000 in military donations will be headed to our service members. Special thanks to Robert Recker, Terry Smith, Bruce Neighbor, Wade Lunsford, Kevin Clark, George Jackson, Roger Bauer, and the countless others who assisted with the warehouse team this year. And a special thanks to the 355 Unit Kernels who dedicated countless hours towards properly funding their Scouting Program. They endured warehouse lines, moving boxes, and potentially losing their garage or living room space for months. Without their effort this great success would have not been possible. Scouting for Food Makes News in Vinton County Cub Scouts Take On Bullying in Local Schools McArthur, Ohio During the month of November, Scouts across the country collected nonperishable items as a part of the Scouting for Food initiative. Cub Scouts from Pack 91 and Boy Scouts from Troop 93 collected nearly 2,000 items as part of their service project. Their efforts were reported in The Vinton County Courier. The Scouts left bags on front doors of houses in their village asking residents to fill that bag up with canned good donations and leave them on their front porch for the Scouts to pick up. The Scouts donated the items to CARE Outreach and St. Francis Outreach Center where they will go to local families in need. New Albany, Ohio On Monday, November 23rd, more than 2,000 bookmarks were delivered to the New Albany Elementary School libraries. These were not ordinary bookmarks, but bookmarks with a special message; the message of antibullying. Pack 150 took on the issue of bullying by creating positive message bookmarks, so when children check out books in these libraries they will receive a hand decorated bookmark with messages that read “Never Give Up,” “Encourage Others,” “I choose to be kind,” and many others. The parents and leaders of Pack 150 believe that this project teaches the Cub Scouts to end bullying in their school. It is also a Messengers of Peace Project to promote a message of peace as opposed to hostility or violent conflict. Bringing the Christmas Spirit to Underprivileged Children Powell, Ohio Cub Scouts from Packs 488 and 489 joined the St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church on November 29th to help load donated Christmas gifts from their Advent Giving Tree for under privileged children.
