Grand Valley State University professor Mary Banghart Therrien manages
the social work program at GVSU’s Traverse City Regional Center in
addition to teaching master’s-level social work classes at the center.

tissue surgery, dentistry and VOM’s. VOM
(Veterinary Orthopedic Manipulation) is chiropractic care that is designed to decrease pain
and enhance healing for a variety of common
conditions such as arthritis, intervertebral disk
disease, lameness and hip dysplasia.
I have wanted to be a vet for as long as I
can remember. As a small child, I would walk
around our neighborhood and “rescue” (steal)
dogs and cats that were left outside. My mom
must have dreaded me walking home from
school because I would usually bring back a
new pet that I had found along the way. Yes, I
gave them back!

There are so many things I love about my
job, but the absolute best part of my day is
when we have new puppy and kitten exams.
It’s exciting to see the little fluff-balls run into
our hospital with their tails wagging for the
sole purpose, in their minds, of meeting us and
giving us kisses!! Nothing says “I love you”
like a Golden Retriever tackling me in the exam
room, or a purring kitty nuzzling up to me just
to say “hello”!

The other part of my job that gives me great
happiness is watching these young pets grow
older and become more mature. I get to know
their personalities and can tell when something
