THE CHASE FOR THE GOLDEN BLADE
Founded in 2006, the Chase For The Golden Blade
is open to all USLMRA Local Chapters: win a
trophy at a STA-BIL National Lawn Mower Racing
Series event and your designated Chapter gets a point. The Chapter that has
accumulated the most points at the conclusion of the season wins the Golden
Blade.
The Chase For The Golden Blade was created to promote a friendly
rivalry between all sanctioned Local Chapters of the USLMRA. The actual
award is a perpetual plaque that is passed on to the winning chapter at the
conclusion of the racing season. The winning Chapter has their name added
to the plaque and maintains possession until it is passed on at the conclusion
of the following season. Along with plaque comes bragging rights.
The inaugural year of the Chase was won by the Michigan Lawn Mower
Racing Association. The Florida Lawn Mower Racing Association was a close
second. The 2007 season saw a reversal in the final trophy tally with Florida
accumulating the most trophies and Michigan taking second. The Golden
Blade remained in the Sunshine State for 2008 and 2009, but in 2010 it
returned to Michigan.
Here’ s to friendly, safe racing…and the Chase for the Golden Blade!

announced at the Racer Banquet during STA-BIL Nationals Weekend. The
Nominators and actual Honorees do not have to be present
Dave Hertel Mowtivation Award
(Established 2005)
Named in honor of USLMRA Tech Inspector and “everybody’s good friend”
Dave Hertel.
“Words fail to describe how I feel after having read this email. My only thought
is what a wonderful honor to be bestowed on my husband. I know without a doubt
Dave would have a smile the size of Texas and of course, be indulging in the
greatest award of lawnmower racing, "BRAGGING RIGHTS". Have a safe racing
season. Thank you so much for forwarding messages from the racers. It brings
peace to my heart. May everyone love the sport and keep it safe, competitive and
friendly.” Yolie Hertel
I am deeply touched that there is an award for my father Dave Hertel. I know he
would be proud and he probably is. May his spirit and his legend live on in the lawn
mower community. Thanks to all. Dawn Teska (Dave’s daughter)
Charles Powell “Mr. Mowjangles” Award
(Established 2007)
Charles Powell was the driving force behind the USLMRA Local Chapter
System. His support, guidance and forward-thinking are what has made the LC
System so successful.
Charles was a fortunate man. The three things he loved most in the world were
his family, his job and lawnmower racing. How many people can say they spend
their days doing what they love, in one capacity or another?
Charles loved everything about lawnmower racing: the preparation, travel,
excitement, the adrenaline rush and, most especially, the people. He also loved
doing whatever he could to make the sport better. He was constantly thinking,
mulling tweaking – just trying, in some small way, to make it something for
everyone. No one will ever know how much of himself he gave.
This award is exciting because it means someone who is working just as
diligently as Charles always did will be recognized. If the recipient is anything like
Charles, he/she is pretty much behind the scenes and wants no recognition, which
is all the more reason for accolades.
These are the people who make things happen and keep things running
smoothly, yet no one knows unless something goes wrong. They spend countless
hours arranging, meeting, editing, mediating, putting in physical labor, on the
telephone, sacrificing time with family and friends and sometimes their own dollars
to make the Local Chapters work. They step up when called upon and just roll up
their sleeves and get to work. They are leaders, and like many good leaders, they
stand back when it is time for applause.
With this award comes a small token of appreciation for all the work that goes
into this crazy, wonderful sport of lawnmower racing. As long as these people are
willing to continue to give of themselves it will only get better and better. Tyler &
Cyrstal, Cody, Mama MOWjangles and I can think of no better way to honor him.
Dubba G. Everyman Award
(Established 2007)
“I was put here to make others happy. I believed in myself so others
could.” Dubba G.
From Dubba G, himself:
1. We are looking for people with dedication, integrity and conviction to stand up
for what they believe, even when unpopular.
2. The candidate will carry a positive disposition.
3. Actions on the track, including driving style, will show gentlemanly demeanor.
Not necessarily always deferring to other drivers, but not creating unsafe
situations. Theircompetitive spirit needs to be tempered with a "spirit of a
sound mind".
4. Candidates are willing to help others. When times of need arise, sacrifice is not
uncommon, willing to volunteer, add a hand, step up to the plate.
5. Enthusiasm is key. They want to be here, at the race, in the paddock, at the
driver's meeting, their excitement will help the group's positive energy grow
and surge just by their presence. People like being around the candidate.
6. General knowledge of what's going on race day, race track, in the paddock, in
general. This would imply that first month rookies may not fully qualify, but
depending on their learning curve, they could be in the running. This doesn't
mean they have to know everything, but a good solid understanding of how
things work is the basic idea.
7. Most important, at least to me, is their Sense of Fair Play. We have all seen
racers over the years that possess some or a few of these qualities, but when
bump comes to shove, this particular attribute gets left behind or thrown out
the window, depending on the situation. This applies on the track, negotiations
during the rules committee, arguments about rules infractions and who gets
the last beer after the race.
8. Comes prepared to help. Spare parts, rope to hang clothes, share knowledge,
extra mower to run on race day in order to keep accumulating points for the
season. Having made preparations to help others in advance, knowing
someone will need something. #4 shows the willingness, #8 exhibits the
forethought to add extra supplies, etc.
9. One of the traditions I enjoyed most was having a steak and a beer (or mower)
after the race. I know most people want to run home. But there is always a few
that will stick around or meet you on the way to the airport. This one is a bit
hard to wrap your arms around, but I think this is part of the mix.
10. I always preferred plaques. Trophies can be hard to store, but there's always
room for a plaque. A lot less dusting along with less space used.
Gonzo Go To Fund
(Established 2007)
Note: As announced at the 2007 STA-BIL Nationals Weekend, funds are being created
to honor the memory of late great Mike “Gonzo” Leonard, 2006 Dave Hertel Mowtivation
Award Winner, who passed away in 2007 Mike loved to “go to” races, so to honor Mike,
Local Chapters are collecting funds to be given to racers to help them so that they may
“go to” races. Here is what the Michigan Lawn Mower Racing Association (MILMRA) is
doing.
A monetary sum will be given by random selection to one (1) racer in each
USLMRA Class during STA-BIL Nationals Weekend in honor of Mike “Gonzo”
Leonard.
Mace Mullins Crew Chief Award
A Racer, Engine Builder and Crew Chief, Mace Mullins passed away on July 17,
2009. Mace, a multi-year racing champion will be honored with the Mace Mullins
Crew Chief Award. “Mace was like a brother to me, and I’m proud to honor him”,
says a Former National AP Class Champion and Triple Crown winner. Lawn mower
racers everywhere loved ´Mace, and I loved the guy. It was a former AP Champion
Dale Becker’s idea to honor Mace with this award in his honor.
Mace Mullins was an individual who would always be there for anyone. His
specialty was building engines and with this expertise he assisted Dale Becker in
being a successful Champion in the AP class. He was always there when needed,
and he always insured that Dales Mowchine was ready come race day.
This award is to be presented to an individual who like Mace always takes the
time to assist racers as a pit crewmember. doing whatever necessary to have Race
Mowers ready come race day, and one who displays the knowledge and energy that
sets the example for all racers.
Thanks Doc Kuhfeldt for annoncing our races!

2015 STA-BIL 360
PERFORMANCE NATIONALS
By Angeline Hartness Robinson
The 2015 STA-BIL National Lawn Mower Racing
Series season came to an end On Sunday, Sept. 27 at the Charlotte Motor
Speedway in Concord, NC. Unfortunately Mother Nature had other plans in
mind for our STA-BIL 360 Performance Nationals race. The staff at both
Charlotte Motor Speedway and USLMRA tried everything in their power to
make this race happen, but the rain never stopped all weekend. It seems as
though the word rain could sum this season up perfectly. Many of our races
were cut short, extended, or just never happened this season due to rain. We
still had a blast everywhere we went though, rain or not!
On Thursday with the pending threat of rain in weekend forecast, the staff
members of USLMRA and TerraCross met with the Charlotte Motor Speedway
staff to concoct a plan. The plan was brilliant, but it solely depended on the rain
stopping like the previous forecasts had called for. Unfortunately, the rain
never stopped throughout the entire weekend. Everyone was bummed, but I
think the crew that had worked tirelessly for weeks on our track were the most
bummed about it. Those guys worked very long hours to create for us what
would have been an outstanding racetrack. It was wide, with sweeping turns.
It's was hard as a rock, cured all the way down, and simply beautiful. Those
guys did an outstanding job on it, and I really hate that they never were able to
witness a race on their track.
I would like to tell each and every member of the Charlotte Motor
Speedway staff that had a part in this thank you; Matt, Shaun, Whitney, Dennis,
Ed, Scott, Steve, and anyone else that worked on this for us! Thank you from
the bottom of our hearts for everything that you all did to make this perfect for
us! We would also like to thank Mr. Joe Duncan with TerraCross for being so
accommodating to us, he offered up his time slots for us in the event that it
was raining during our times and not during his times. He was wonderful to
us! We hope to be able to work together with him in the future.
With the races cancelled that left the points ending where they were
heading into Nationals Weekend. I know that many of you have asked about
those that were tied for points. The tie was already broken before this race to
provide us with an accurate starting line up. The tie is broken by factoring in
amount of wins, amount of 2nd's, and races attended during the season.
Each year after all of the racing ends, we have an Awards Banquet. I think
everyone should participate in at least one Banquet during their racing
careers, they are great! Since we were at the Charlotte Motor Speedway this
year, our Banquet was held on the 5th floor of Smith Tower. It was beautiful;
everything was just perfect from arrival until departure. We had a catered
breakfast, which was amazing!
All of the awards are my favorite part. We had many special ones this
year. Bruce did something amazing for Manny and Kerry. Our very own racer
Ivy Stella is an amazing artist. She has been posting her work for all of us to
see and even purchase. Bruce found original pieces of her art for both Manny
and Kerry, they were beautiful! Little did Bruce know though, Ivy had been
working on a plan for him for quite sometime. She enlisted some help from
some of us in the racing world to execute her plan. She asked many of us to
write thank you notes to Bruce or our favorite memory of him for an awesome
book that she put together. She had also ordered him a custom, one of a kind
bobble head! He looked just like the Grass Hole, it even had that on it!!! It was
perfect! Thank you Ivy for planning such an amazing gift for Bruce and
including us in on it!
During the awards there were many tears, both happy and sad. We
laughed, we smiled, we had a great time! We had a beautiful tribute to the late
Mrs. Jackie Andrews who lost her fight earlier this month. We also had the
yearly privilege of acknowledging those in the lawn mower racing world that
we lost too soon by awarding the most deserving racers an award named after
them. These awards are the best, they are voted on by the drivers. I would like
to congratulate everyone who received one. Drivers were also given awards
such as Rookie of the Year (kids & adults), Most Improved Driver, and Driver of
the Year. If you were lucky enough to receive any of these awards, cherish
them! It is a true honor to receive any one of them!
USLMRA also handed out a couple of National Staff Awards. One going
to Mr. Eric Corner for his dedication this racing season. He made it to every
race that was held in the series, that was an amazing accomplishment. I was
also the recipient of one of these amazing awards for all of my hard work and
dedication this year. It was a true honor for me, and I know that it was for Mr.
Eric too.
Another highlight of the Banquet was the indication of Jim Witt and his
late wife Janet and the entire Mikula family into the Lawn Mower Racing Hall
of Fame. The indication speeches were read by Mr. Manny Torres and were
eloquent and moving. Well done, Mr. Manny! I’d be remiss if I also didn’t
congratulation my husband, Mr. Derrick Robison for being voted Driver of the
Year by his fellow racers. Congratulations, dear!
I hate to close this, only because I hate to see this season end! It has
been a fantastic season from the beginning down in Florida, until the end at
Charlotte MOWer Speedway. Thank you to each and every person who races
with the United States Lawn Mower Racing Association, thank you to our
amazing staff members (not just the ones that we see at the race tracks, but all
of those behind the scenes too), and most importantly, thank you to each and
every venue that has hosted us this year! You all are truly amazing; I am so
excited to see where 2016 will take us all. See y'all soon!

JACKIE ANDREWS, MOWING ON...
In 2015, the lawn mower racing community lost a dear friend, Jackie Andrews
of Maryland. Jackie was loved by racers everywhere, and we will all miss her
smiling face at the track. Mow on, Jackie: may your grass always be green.
