Welcome to the 2015 retail list. It has been a busy
start to the year with visits to Bordeaux, Burgundy,
the Rhône, Italy and Spain tasting new releases
and searching for new growers to work with.
There will new additions to our range throughout
the course of the year. We are proud to have been
entrusted with exclusive distribution throughout
Ireland for the wonderful wines of Pesquera from
Spain’s Ribera del Duero and the stunning and
highly sought-after wines of Felton Road winery

In 2000 Jane became Ireland’s first female
Master of Wine and is still the only person
to hold the qualification in Northern Ireland.
Jane has over 30 years’ experience working
in the wine trade, spanning all sectors of
the business from buying to selling, from
composing wine lists for restaurants and
hotels to judging wine competitions, to
wine education and writing for magazines
and books. Please do not hesitate to get in
touch with Jane for advice on any fine wine
purchases or services.
If you love wine and would like to start
building a cellar that will provide rewarding
drinking over the years to come, a cellar
plan is the ideal solution. It all begins with
a consultation with Jane to discuss your
personal taste, your budget and all of your
requirements. You then set up a regular
payment to your cellar plan (min £100 per
month) and your personal collection will
start to build. You can take delivery of wines
as and when you wish or you can cellar
some of your wines with us and benefit from
Jane’s expert advice on when to drink and
when to wait.
We can also create a ready-made cellar
for you if that suits your needs better.
En Primeur Service
Over the last thirty years, we have
developed strong bonds with negociants,
growers and châteaux in Bordeaux,
Burgundy and the Rhône. Every year we
travel to these regions to taste the new
wines and secure good allocations of the
very best wines for our customers. As
soon as prices are released, the wines are
available for purchase “En Primeur”- the
process whereby wines are bought before
being bottled and sold onto the market.
We also get en primeur allocations of some
of our top Californian wines such as Ridge
and Dominus. Join our fine wine mailing
list to be informed of any offers.
Broking Service
Broking involves the buying and selling
of mature, fine wine, usually under bond
but also duty paid. If you are interested
in buying or selling wine in this way,
please get in touch.
Storage
Storage is available under bond at our
bonded warehouse in Belfast. This facility
is only available for wines bought en primeur
or under bond and charges apply.

I can proudly say that the name Rochioli has been associated
with this area for almost 80 years. My Father Joe Rochioli jr
had the foresight to know that the soil of this unique spot in

Achaval Ferrer is regularly lauded by wine critics around the
world as one of Argentina’s top producers of Malbec. We
have a limited selection of these outstanding single vineyard
wines. Grown at high altitude in prime locations these fine
expressions of the Malbec grape are carefully crafted and
will age beautifully for at least another decade.

The 2011 Sophenia 2 Cabernet Sauvignon Malbec has a
fragrant bouquet of black currant, raspberry, cedar and
sous-bois that is well-defined. The palate is medium-bodied
with supple tannins and plenty of fleshy, earthy fruit. It is
quite Old World in style, with a herbaceous, forest floor
finish, although it needs a little more harmony and precision
on the finish. Still, this is an enjoyable red blend from
Sophenia. Drink now-2017.

In Muscadet, 2014 is probably the best ever. The
sauvignons of the Touraine, Sancerre and Pouilly were
pretty good too… This is where we started hearing
growers suggesting you’d need to work hard to make
a bad wine this year, where growers like Vincent Pinard
couldn’t rêver mieux (dream of better).
Over at Domaine Bellevue, the grapes were so ripe they
tasted of lychees. No need to open a tin or break open
those crinkly red-brown skins for your hit of exotic fruit just pick sauvignon grapes straight from the vine. His
wines are fab too - really luscious… as near perfect as we
could hope for. In the Anjou, the dry whites are great.
Classic, ripe, super degrees, lovely concentration and
plenty of freshness to make the wines hum.

In the cooler wine regions, the battle for winemakers is
to get enough sugar in the grapes at harvest time. In the
warm Languedoc region, however, the problem is reversed:
having too much sugar (and therefore alcohol) and too little
acidity. To produce her elegant red, Brigitte Chevalier has
planted the Syrah and Grenache at a higher altitude and
facing north, slowing down the ripening process. Blended
with grapes from south-facing Mourvèdre vines, the result
is graceful but perfectly ripe: you can sense the southern

Also seriously impressive, the 2012 Gigondas 1806 is
comprised of 80% Grenache and 20% Syrah that was
aged all in larger, older barrels. It shows the freshness and
purity of the vintage nicely with plenty of crisp currant and
blackberry fruit, edgy minerality, ground herbs and tinges
of leather on the nose. This carries it to a medium to fullbodied, concentrated and yet classically-styled wine that
should be reasonably approachable on release, yet evolve
gracefully for upward of a decade.

2012 Gigondas les Racines has a darker slant to its fruit
and gives up plenty of currants, licorice, bouquet garni and
chocolate, as well as serious minerality. Medium to fullbodied, elegant and seamless, I actually like the mid-palate
on the Terraces de Diable more, but the tannin quality here
is more polished and sweeter. Give this another 2-3 years
in the cellar and drink it through 2024.

The single-vineyard Balciana is a wine that transcends
Verdicchio, taking the variety boldly where it has never gone
before. Made in specific years only when late harvesting is

acidity. A few vintages have been almost off-dry, but recent
versions are fresher and less opulent.

I first began recommending the wines from
this large estate (over 1,000 acres of vines)
in the Maremma region of southwestern
Tuscany when it was imported by Eric Solomon.
It is often called a “baby Brunello”, but I am not
sure that is accurate. The wines have a lot of
character and flavor, but they are soft, round,
easy-going and best drunk in their first several
years of life.
Morisfarms’ tasty 2012 Morellino di Scansano
comes from their Poggio la Mozza Vineyard,
and sees no new oak. Supple, with lots of sweet
strawberry and cherry fruit in the aromas and
flavors, round, ripe and medium-bodied with an
attractive lushness, this sexy Tuscan red can be
enjoyed over the next several years.

sheer balance are both marvelous to behold. Layers of
fruit fill out the broad-shouldered finish beautifully. In
2008, the Nerobaronj is striking in every way. I loved it.

New to our portfolio are wines from Pask in Hawke’s Bay &

You might think that Central Otago winery Felton Road’s
recognition as one of the greatest New World producers
of pinot noir would allow owner Nigel Greening and long
term winemaker Blair Walter to take their feet off the pedal.
Yet their restless hunger and curiosity continues apace.
When the opportunity to purchase half the Calvert Vineyard
recently came up, Greening did not hesitate. The half he has
acquired are three pinot noir blocks; Willows, Aurum and

Walter is delighted, saying: “Calvert produces what may
be our most elegant cuvee of pinot noir. It is a wine of
finesse and purity rather than muscle.” English wine writer
Matthew Jukes described it as “New Zealand’s first pinot
noir grant cru vineyard”. Felton Road now has three of its
four vineyards on its eponymous road – The Elms (its first
vineyard, planted in 1992), Calvert and MacMuir. The last is
5.8ha of bare land acquired from the Calvert family in 2010,
which will be fully planted to pinot noir this coming spring.
I have written before of the relentless marketing of Felton
Road wines around the globe by Greening and Walter.
Two weeks before the Melbourne presentation of the 2012
vintage wines, I met the duo in Burgundy, Walter on his way
home for some quick R&R after visiting Oslo, Copenhagen,
Helsinki and Stockholm. For 2014 the size of the picking
crew will be doubled to ensure each block is picked at its
optimum. Walter says, “I have realised we should seek to
achieve appropriate ripeness, not phenological ripeness,
which may involve picking earlier in some instances.” He was
like a dog gnawing at a bone as he also ruminated about
vine age and picking decisions, and made it clear he hoped
to make even better wines in the future.

In my view their Sauvignons are the best of the region:
the floral 2014... The Chardonnay is planted 65% to the
Medoza clone (citrusy acidity) and 35% to the B95
clone (more subtle). I found the 2013 “pure Burgundy”
(17.75/92, 2015-2020); the 2012 showing more lemony
fruit and good vineyard depth (17.75/92, 2015-2020).
Pinot Noirs were another revelation.

This is one of my favourite estates in the region. This little
boutique is fanatical and winemaker Carlos Figueiredo (with
the help of son and CEO Pedro) is certainly on a roll. They
make exceptional reds at all levels, built to age. There is a
classic, structured feel to them. They aren’t always soft and
easy, but even the lower levels are pretty nice. They deserve
a lot more attention than they’re getting, frankly. So, don’t
hesitate to start now.

The 2012 Rose Quinta da Falorca is a Touriga Nacional
pink, shown to me recently as the current one. It was held
back in stainless steel for 15 months before bottling. It is
not yet imported. With the extra year of age, it is quite
fascinating, fresh and young, with elegance and sensual
texture. Persistent and lively on the finish, it tastes great, too,
in its rather serious, bone-dry manner. It can easily be held
another year or two - but there is really no point to doing so.

The 2007 Garrafeira Quinta da Falorca “Old Vines” is
gorgeous. It is a fine representation of the region. Where
once the word “Garrafeira” (which simply indicates holding
the wine back in bottle a specified time for late release)
had considerable cachet, indicating something special, it is
not much of a guarantor of quality these days-except where
individual wineries still intend it to be special, as here. This
is likely the best wine I’ve had from Falorca. I’m still being
a bit conservative with it given its pure power, but it most
certainly will improve further in the cellar over the next
several years. Sweet and delicious, yet with fine structure
and a bit of a hard edge, this has precision and focus, lovely
mouthfeel and a long life ahead. Falorca certainly had a fine
2007 vintage from everything I’ve seen. This looks like a star
- but don’t buy it unless you have some patience and a cellar.
I suspect it will not be at peak until around 2020.

At Reyneke we strive for quality with integrity.
Environmentally, this is covered by our adherence to
organics and biodynamics. Culturally we do this through our
Cornerstone project.Our workers are seen as the foundation
of our house and the cornerstone of our business. After
all, one cannot make great wine without good grapes and
there’s no way of growing good grapes without having
everyone on board.
The Indian philosopher Amartya Sen said that true
empowerment is about the capability to choose for oneself.
It’s something we wholeheartedly believe. So we asked
our workers what they’d choose for their life. The reply was
home ownership and education for their children.
In the South African context, where houses and work
are limited, much of the population is legally free but
structurally enslaved. To stay on a farm one has to work
on a farm and after many generations of labouring in
the vineyards and fields, it’s natural for parents to want
their children to have a choice.
So, to give credit where it’s overdue, Cornerstone profits
go to projects benefitting our workers and their families.
To date, four worker families have been rewarded with their
own homes, and currently we’re funding tertiary education
for our first ‘farm child’.

Deep ruby. Smoke and spice-accented dark berry and
cherry-cola aromas are brightened by a subtle mineral
element and a hint of fresh rose. Juicy and seamless on
the palate, offering plush, oak-spiced blackberry and mocha
flavors and a touch of bitter herbs. Fine-grained tannins
give grip to the finish, which clings with very good spicy
tenacity. This drinks quite nicely right now, especially with
an hour or so of aeration; it’s a great introduction to this
iconic producer’s style at an extremely fair price. 90 pts.

We are delighted by our appointment as Irish importer for
all of Alejandro Fernandez wines - from the near cult-status
Pesquera to the newer wineries in La Mancha & Castilla y
Leon. Alejandro Fernandez is a the perfect example of a
self-made man; it is often said that childhood shapes an
individual’s future, and from boyhood onward, Alejandro,
following family tradition, learned from his father how to
make wine using grapes from small vineyards. In his youth,
while holding down various jobs, he nurtured his dream
of one day running a bodega. He had to wait until 1972 to
realise that dream with his own bona fide bodega - a modest
16th century stone-built building, from which almost all the
winemaking processes were carried out.
Pesquera wines are always made from the whole fruit, after
destemming. Temperature controlled fermentation lasts two
to three weeks. Afterwards, without clarifying, the grape
pulp is directly transferred to a combination of French and
American oak barrels that have been subject to various
degrees of toasting. Tinto Pesquera wines are aged in oak
for 18 months while Reservas and Grandes Reservas are
aged for no less than 24 months.

The 2008 Pagos Viejos was selected from three of the
estate’s finest and most elevated sites with all of the
vines over 75 years of age. The wine was aged for 18
months in new French oak. Deeply colored, it offers up
a superb nose of pain grille, pencil lead, Asian spices,
incense, and assorted black fruits. Rich, layered, and
beautifully proportioned, this lengthy effort will evolve
for 5-7 years and offer a drinking window extending
from 2016 to 2028+.

The 2010 Valdegines is produced with 100% Tempranillo
from a single east-facing, 7-hectare vineyard planted in 1979
in Laguardia at 600 meters altitude in slopes and terraces,
which fermented in open wooden vats for 10-12 days and
aged in French oak barrel for 14 months. The character of
this vineyard is always very fresh, as it does not get sun after
5pm, so it’s always more Atlantic, more floral and on the red
fruit side, easy to drink, with laser-like precision and acidity.

Ludes. Open and relatively simple but proper stuff. A tiny
bit sweet but reasonably delicate and a lot more refined
and fun than the average own label selling at this price. Well
integrated and ready to roll. Nicely balanced even if on the
appetising end of the spectrum. Tiny bead. Neat finish.

where an estate’s heart lies when you realise that it only
grows and makes wine from a single grape variety. There is
no equivalent in Italy to Sartarelli, where the estate’s motto
might as well be “Sartarelli or Bust” Decanter magazine, May 2013
The sparkling wine is a new venture by the family and was
described by the authors of the Decanter article as not
unlike a good Prosecco in its charming upfront fruit and floral
aromas and flavours.

PRICES
DELIVERY CHARGES
All prices are in Sterling and are for 75cl bottles unless
otherwise stated and include VAT at the current rate.
Delivery to GB*:
DISCOUNTS
£15.95 postage and packaging for orders
of 13-24 x 75cl bottles per delivery address.
Bottle and bottle per case (12 x 75cl or equivalent)
prices are shown in this list. Bottle per case, or
mixed case, prices reflect a 10% discount on the bottle
prices. Discounts are not available on wines sold
in bond, quarter bottles of wine, spirits or other
non-wine products.
AVAILABILITY
All products are sold subject to availability. Prices
are correct at the time of going to print (May 2015).
James Nicholson Wine Merchant does however reserve
the right to amend prices, for example following
Government or legislative changes, or in the event
of major foreign exchange movements.
VINTAGES
Vintages are correct at the time of publication
(May 2015) but, wine being an agricultural product of
limited supply and finite shelf life, vintages may change
without notice, during the life of this brochure. Prices
for subsequent vintages may differ from those quoted.
SUBSTITUTE WINES
Should a wine become unavailable, we reserve
the right to substitute it with a wine of equal or
superior quality.
DELIVERY
We will endeavour to deliver your wine within seven
working days from receipt of the order. All goods
must be examined at the time of delivery. Claims
for breakages will be accepted only if James Nicholson
Wine Merchant is given notification within three days
of delivery.
DELIVERY CHARGES
Delivery within Northern Ireland:
FREE subject to a minimum order of 12x75cl bottles
for delivery to the same address. A delivery surcharge
of £7.95 will apply to orders of less than 12 bottles
per delivery address.
*Please contact us at [email protected] for a quote for
deliveries of more than 36 bottles to a single delivery
address or for any deliveries to the Isle of Man, Isle of
Wight, The Scilly Isles and the Scottish Highlands, or
for delivery of wines purchased under bond.
PAYMENT AND DESPATCH
Settlement in full is required prior
to despatch of orders.
TITLE TO GOODS
James Nicholson Wine Ltd shall retain ownership of all
Goods supplied until the customer has made payment,
in full, for the Goods.
Until such payment, the Goods shall be properly stored
and maintained in good condition and shall at all times
be separately stored in such a way as to be identifiable
as the property of James Nicholson Wine Ltd.
The customer shall, if requested by the vendor,
immediately return or release the Goods to James
Nicholson Wine Ltd.
RETURNS
Credits, based on actual purchase prices, will be
allowed where any wines or other products are found
to be out of condition within three months of purchase.
In other circumstances, credits will only be allowed
against goods returned to us where the wines are
current vintages, purchased within the previous three
months, and all bottles (including foils, corks, labels,
other packaging etc.) remain in good, re-saleable
condition. Credits will again be based on actual
purchase prices but, in these circumstances, collection
charges from our carriers will be deducted from any
credits allowed.
ERRORS AND OMISSIONS
James Nicholson Wine Ltd accepts no liability arising
from any errors (including typographical) contained in,
or any omissions from, this publication.
