By Amy Sampson Hello skiers and riders!! I am so happy to be writing this introduction to the 2015-2016 winter season, because it means that it is officially fall and winter will be here soon! It was an amazing summer, but like most of you, I absolutely cannot wait for the winter season. Every season I spend at Mount Peter is special, but this year I am excited and humbled to announce that this year is Mount Peter’s 80th Anniversary! To me, Mount Peter is not just a ski area or a business, it is my home. I grew up here, exploring every inch of the mountain. Most of my childhood memories are here at Mount Peter, and I know that so many would say the same. We have seen generations come through our doors, and the rowdy kids of the past are now teaching their own kids how to ski and snowboard right where they grew up. I was one of those kids, taking up the “cool” tables in the lodge and staying on the slopes until the chair shut down for the night and ski patrol ushered us away. My sister and I helped my family plant the trees that divide the trails on the mountain, we have painted the main lodge more times than we’d like to remember. We both have very clear memories of handwriting names on season passes, cutting out tiny little pictures and laminating them in plastic sleeves. Our mountain has come so far, thanks to so many. There have been so many people who have touched this place, who have left their mark – employees, guests, families – that you can sense the imprint of their memories when you walk through the lodge, or take the chair to the top on a quiet night. All of this, the memories, recent and distant ones, the progress that we have made (no more laminating for this girl!), all trace back to two people. Mount Peter would not be where it is if not for the love of Don and Gail Sampson; who have worked for more than forty years to make it successful; who have literally worked side by side, through great winters and not-so-great-winters, doing whatever it took to keep the bull wheel turning. They might not have laid the first brick 80 years ago, but they have built on that foundation something more than just a great business – they built a way of life; a mountain that would bring families together for years to come. If you were to find just the right spot in the main lodge and peel back the carpeting, you would find two sets of tiny handprints. They belong to my sister and me, indented into the concrete. We have been given the great opportunity of making our mark here at Mount Peter, and in so many ways, all of you reading this have as well. Please, put your worries to rest, and spend a day on our mountain. We even added tubing this season. Something for everyone – and a memory to keep for a lifetime.
