The ski lifts in Châtel open in summer provide
an effortless way to reach the peaks
and starting points of walks…
With the Portes du Soleil Multi Pass
you can enjoy unlimited activities for
everyone in the Portes du Soleil area!
From the village centre, the Super-Châtel gondola lift takes you up to an
altitude of 1,650 m. From there you can continue on the Morclan chairlift
up to 1,970 m and a breathtaking panorama… A viewing table there
tells you the names of all of the peaks. The Morclan is also a paragliding
take-off area…
From Pré-la-Joux, 6 km from the village, the Pierre-Longue chairlift takes
you directly to the village of Plaine-Dranse in the mountain pastures.
From there you can continue your walk by taking the Rochassons
chairlift, and you can even get to Avoriaz by using two other chairlifts…
With the Portes du Soleil Multi Pass, pedestrians can use all of the ski
lifts operating in the summer in the Portes du Soleil. It is also possible to
use the four lifts in Châtel (Super-Châtel gondola lift or Morclan, PierreLongue and Rochassons chairlift) when you buy just one return ticket.
For all holidaymakers staying with an accommodation

Morclan themed trail: a walk discovering the local fauna, flora and habitat,
accessible using the Super-Châtel ski lifts (included in the Multi Pass).
Water trail: running between the Lac de Vonnes in Châtel and the Lac de
Morgins in Switzerland, this walk features ten information boards in the
shape of a water drop. The topics covered include water, water tables and
water in the mountains.

smugglers and customs officials who once played cat and mouse in this

terminals and a copy of the illustrated trail guide.

Bird trail: information boards at the Col de Bassachaux providing
an introduction to the mountain birds found in Châtel.
Dranse riverside trail: for walkers and cyclists! This trail which runs along
the riverside from Pré-la-Joux to Abondance is nearly 16 km long and
accessible to everyone: families, sporty types, children and pushchairs.
The route is mostly flat and runs through areas of ecological interest,
offering pretty riverside views and a chance to see the local heritage
along the way… In short, it gives you a glimpse of another side of the
Abondance Valley.
The Chablais Géopark
In March 2012 the Chablais region joined the network of worldwide
Géoparks recognised by UNESCO.
From the southern shore of Lake Geneva to the peaks of the Portes du
Soleil, and to the Col de Bassachaux for the remarkable site of Châtel, the
Chablais countryside is the result of 250 million years of history which saw
the formation of the Alps! The Chablais Géopark focuses on the themes
of our glacial heritage and water. This remarkable area of
countryside lies at the heart of the culture and lives of
the people who live here and the region's many visitors.

This man-made trial mountain
biking area at Pré-la-Joux is made
up of various features which
blend in perfectly with the natural
surroundings. With one rule for all
and different routes for each level,
this bike skills course is both fun
and instructive, plus it’s absolutely
free and open to everyone.
It is of course recommended
that you wear a helmet.
The Mountain
Bike Park
The Châtel Bike Park is a special
area dedicated to mountain
biking fanatics in the Pré-la-Joux
sector, which is reached via the
Pierre-Longue and/or Rochassons
chairlifts.
It has 21 downhill trails at all
difficulty levels and a number
of newschool fun zones. These
include 6 North Shore zones, the
Mountain Style Face (freeride/
freestyle area), a Kids’ Shore and
a Drop Zone with a Live Park
where you can video yourself
and share your videos with your
friends.

mountain bike, helmet and
protective gear are compulsory.

The route negotiates a very steep
and exposed rock face. It takes an
attractive rocky route made up
of a succession of ledges, corners
and overhangs. It comprises three
separate sections: le cabri,
le chamois and le bouquetin,
which can be completed
separately or all together. There
are several physically demanding
stretches of varying lengths in the
2nd and 3rd sections that should
be tackled only by experienced
or very closely supervised via
ferrata climbers.

On the Rubis piste in Pré-la-Joux
there are 20 unpowered karts for
anyone who would like to try out
a new sport and leisure activity.
You come down the piste at
whatever speed you like and
go back up again by hooking
the dévalkart to the ski tow pole.

Around the Lac de Vonnes The RIVARI fun trail
lac de vonnes
This trail is all about learning while having fun
One kilometre from the village centre, the trail around the lake is equipped
for walking, cycling and pushchairs, etc. Like a giant fountain, the water jet
in the middle of the Lac de Vonnes reaches a height of 40 metres. And at
an altitude of 1,300 metres it is the highest fountain in France!
The Rivari Trail, named after Châtel's little mascot, is a fun walk that
teaches children about the mountain wildlife through six puzzles in little
hands-on workshops along the way.
Along the 600 m trail there are stopping points with wooden information
boards. The trail is suitable for children aged 3 years and over. It's a great
way of spending some fun time with the family. The trail is free.

The old customs house
The old customs house has been converted into a cultural
tourist attraction, showing visitors a different side to this
border region. Children and adults will find this a fascinating
trip back in time, learning about the game of cat and mouse that went on
between the smugglers and the customs officers (known as ‘gabelous’) in
the mountains of the Portes du Soleil before the advent of winter sports.
Packed with anecdotes, local witness accounts and customs archives,
the Old Customs House provides a picturesque, entertaining and richly
documented and illustrated account of our local history. And there are

On 1 June 2009 the way that resort tax is levied changed. The tax is now
applied on a direct basis instead of as a fixed amount!
This now reflects actual visitor numbers.
Over 90 % of France’s winter sports and summer resorts have introduced a
direct resort tax system.

provider, who repays this tax to the local council.
