BARWON REGION-COORDINATORS MESSAGE
Welcome to the second version of our digital edition of the Geelong & District Coaches
Association newsletter for June/July! Thanks to those who welcomed the new format
and also to those who gave us feedback. Please let us know of anything else you would
like to see added or if you have an article that is worth sharing with our coaches in the
region. A big thank you must go to Steve Teakel and Dave O’Neil from AFL Victoria,
who have been instrumental in structuring the new eNewsletter format.
I do need to start off with some very sad news with the passing of John Edsall’s wife Kerry and also the
resignation of John from his role as Football Development Manager with AFL Victoria. John has spent his time
and energy focusing on the health and wellbeing of his wife Kerry since her diagnosis in 2013. Kerry lost her
battle to cancer recently with her Celebration Service being held in Drysdale. The G&DCA would like to pass
on their deepest sympathies to John and his family for what would be a very emotional time. It must also be
acknowledged that John has given a tremendous amount of dedication and passion to his development role in
and around Geelong for the past two decades in the Development and Coaching domain. The G&DCA
committee would formally like to acknowledge John’s contribution to the growth and development of football
in the region and wish him well in his future endeavours. We will be officially recognising John’s service to the
G&DCA in due course. You will find a short tribute to John’s service to AFL Victoria inside.
The Junior Coaching Course was held on the 18th of May with a total of 76 coaches attending the day. Please
find some photos within this eNewsletter. Thanks to Geelong FC Assistant Coach Paul Hood for giving up his
time to present ‘Organising the Training Session’ and to all the Junior/Auskick coaches for giving up their
Sunday to attend.
th
In conjunction with the Geelong Football Club, we also held a Coaches Forum on Tuesday the 27 of May.
Geelong FC Assistant Coaches Nigel Lappin and Paul Hood with facilitator Chris Hickey presented to 85
coaches from the Barwon region. A special thanks to Nathan Tweedle from the Geelong Cats Community
Department for coordinating this event with us and we hope to strengthen our relationship with the Cats into
the future.
The Geelong and District Coaches Association ‘Coach of the Year’ dinner is scheduled for Wednesday the 9 th of
October at the Buckley’s Entertainment Centre. I attended my first Coach of the Year dinner last year and was
impressed with the level of commitment from Clubs from all Leagues in the region to attend and support the
night. We are anticipating another big turnout this year with the guest speaker being confirmed in the coming
weeks. Please start ensuring that you nominate worthy coaches from your Club when we call for nominations
from all levels of coaching. Well done to Shane Jack from Ocean Grove and Mark McDowell from Inverleigh
for your ‘Coach of the Month’ awards so far this year. Coach of the Year award winners are automatically
nominated for the ‘Senior Coach’ category and receive a complimentary ticket to the Dinner as well.
Finally, thanks to Pete Saw, James Garvey and David McCormick for their contributions to this edition…we will
be sending a copy of ‘The Art of Coaching’ by David Wheadon your way!
Regards,
Tim Macmichael

JOHN EDSALL TRIBUTE
John’s involvement in local football as an administrator/player dates back to the 1980’s, since his appointment to
Junior Vice President of BFL (photos above!) in the mid 90’s. John has made an enormous contribution to the
growth of the game at a junior level and has been instrumental in the development of coaching improvements
through education for the region. A passionate man that never went at anything at less than ‘full-on attack’, his
legacy to the game and the development of football has been appreciated by all.

COACH OF THE MONTH - APRIL AND MAY
Jack, McDowell honoured after flying starts to the season
Nick Wade, Geelong Advertiser, May 14th 2014
OCEAN Grove coach Shane Jack and Inverleigh’s Mark McDowell are the first two local mentors recognised in
this year’s Geelong & District Coaches Association Award.
Jack received the April nomination for the Coach of the Month award and McDowell was this week
acknowledged with the May gong. McDowell has sensationally given his young Hawks a sniff of finals after
exceeding all expectations with a 4-1 start to the GDFL season.
He took over as Inverleigh coach this season and has his side playing brash, hard- running style of footy built
around some handy recruits. Many had predicted the Hawks to struggle this year, but McDowell, who
oversees the GDFL Colts team, hopes his side can maintain its footing inside the top alongside the giants of
the competition. “There’s a lot of water to go under the bridge,” McDowell said this week. “We need to get
through Anakie this week and the real test will come to us later on when we face up to Winchelsea, North
Geelong and Werribee Centrals and until we play, we’re not going to know how realistic (finals) is.”
Jack’s Grubbers set the early pace in the BFL, winning their first five matches of the season before dropping
the battle of the Bridge against Barwon Heads last week.
In a statement-making start to the year, they knocked off last year’s finalist – Queenscliff and Drysdale – as
well as perennial finalist Torquay. The coach of the year award will be presented in October.

COACH IN PROFILE - PETE SAW
Name: Pete Saw
Club: Torquay Auskick
Been in this coaching role since: 2012 (as coordinator)
Coaching Background: I started coaching Auskick up in North
Queensland in 2006 as I was the only parent to have played and
have some knowledge of AFL!
Favourite Coaching Quote: For Auskick it is, “The number one rule
in Auskick is to have FUN”. For AFL it is either Ron Barassi’s, “If it is
to be, it is up to me” or John Kennedy’s, “Just do something, don’t
think about it, just do something”.
How did you become involved with Auskick at Torquay? I moved to Torquay about five years ago
from Melbourne where I was coaching at Aberfeldie Auskick. My son at the time was in Prep and was
footy obsessed so I just had to get involved. This is my third year as Torquay Auskick Coordinator and
I enjoy the challenge of looking after over 300 kids and 20 coaches.
What has been the success to the growth of the Auskick Centre at Torquay? We have a good
number of coaches spread across all the age groups who really encourage parents to get involved to
help out. Information is provided to the local schools and kindergardens at the start of the season
and this year we started up our own Facebook page to get regular information out.
Support from the local businesses with weekly vouchers and running a BBQ also helps to get people
turning up week after week. This year we have started up a girls only group with over 20 girls now
participating.
What are some of the major achievements/highlights for Auskickers at Torquay? For the older
Auskickers, it is the chance to play at half time of an AFL game. We give all age groups an
opportunity to play at half time of a Torquay Tigers Senior game, which gives them the opportunity
to show off their skills to family & friends. One of the highlights this year was a Friday night session
under lights where we had the inflatable specky mat and tunnel.
What are some of the main coaching principles you convey to your coaches at Auskick level? Make
sure they plan & prepare each session so time and effort isn’t wasted trying to work out what to do
during the session. Educate the parents to get involved so coaches can spend some one-on-one time
with kids that need it. Try and give everyone a go so no one feels left out.
What would your advice to other coaches of Auskick? Make sure the sessions are planned with
plenty of activities & games so the kids have fun. Undertake the Level 1 junior coaching course and
use the resources available.

BFL SENIOR INTERLEAGUE REPORT
James Garvey, BFL Senior Interleague Co-Coach
The BFL Inter-League campaign started with five training sessions and finished with a game against CaseyCardinia at Simmonds Stadium on May the 24th. The commitment from players at the initial training sessions
were fantastic and coming from a different league, it was great to meet a new bunch of talented players. The
Drysdale Football Club was great to all involved, as they not only provided a venue but some hot soup and food
after training.
The squad of 50 was quickly reduced to around 35 with injuries taking some toll but the final team we took into
the game was young, skilful and quick, which we were hoping would be a big advantage on the big surrounds at
Simmonds.
A quick look at the opposition showed that they had two 100 goal kickers
from the previous year, a few VCFL players and 16 players from two teams in
the Casey-Cardinia competition. Given they had so many players from two
sides and we had a spread right across the league, we expected them to start
well so we had a big focus on our start and getting things right around the
footy in the first quarter.
One quarter down and everything was going well. Three goals with Lavars,
Smith and Finch all getting their hands on the footy, Hovey and King looking
dangerous up forward and Bell, Warren and Limb setting us up from down
back. The only issue looked to be Marc Holt, a gun full forward who kicked 7
in last year’s Inter-League game. In the second quarter we started well but
didn't use the footy great going inside the 50m arc. Casey-Cardinia had a
fantastic half-back in Cain Baskaya who was dropping off and causing some
headaches. With injuries in the half to Benny Lavars and Dylan Holland, half
time came at a great time to re-group.
In the 3rd quarter Casey-Cardinia began to really take control of the footy in the midfield and their bigger
bodies were having a big impact on the contest. We swung things around with King going back, Reecey Holwell
running with Baskaya and Stevey Bensted swinging forward but we were struggling to pull the momentum back.
One last roll of the dice in the last with Tommy Balding being isolated deep and taking all the risks we could but
unfortunately the game was too far gone. Despite the loss it was fantastic to be involved and enjoyed by all
coaches.
A big thanks to Cam McGregor, Andrew Lovick, Craig Mccaughan and Chris May who all helped coach on the
day. Also thanks to the Drysdale Football Club for the use of facilities, the trainers and support staff and all the
clubs and players for their commitment and well done to the GFL on their win.
BFL COLTS INTERLEAGUE REPORT
David McCormick, BFL Colts Interleague Coach
Interleague weekend is always an important weekend for any League. It provides players with a great
opportunity to both play at a higher standard of football but also hopefully improve their football. It also allows
players to enjoy getting amongst their peers and putting club allegiances aside. The BFL Colts Inter-League
team, like our senior counterparts, played Casey Cardinia.
After a few weeks training, the team was assembled and ready to represent our League proudly. With simple
game structures in place, our aim was to be competitive and to enjoy the contest. The Colts were up for the
challenge and played inspiring team football throughout the day. We were able to control the game for large
periods, which resulted in us being able to establish a three goal lead for the majority of the game.
However, at times we were not able to put our opponents away, as we were unable to make the most of our
opportunities in front of goal. To Casey-Cardinia’s credit, they kept working and played some inspiration
football during the last quarter.
The last quarter, as throughout the earlier quarters, was a tight, hard contest with neither team prepared to
give in. In the end, the thrilling finish ended up with Casey-Cardinia having a kick after the siren to win the
game.
Captain and midfielder Mitch McGuire was awarded our best player for the day. While the result was not what
we hoped for, the players should be commended by the way they approached and prepared for the game and
also how they not just represented themselves, but also their respective BFL clubs.
I would like to thank all those involved for assisting such as Barry Orvis, Larry O’Donoghue and whoever else
with both prior to and on the day. Hopefully next year, another group of BFL Colts have the opportunity to
experience the excitement of Interleague football. Good luck to all clubs for the rest of the year.
