S E P T E M B E R 2 0 1 6 Holland Area Newcomers Annual Fall Kick-Off Picnic Quincy Park Sunday, Sept 18 @ 3PM Please join us for our Annual Fall Kick-off Picnic on Sunday, September 18 from 3-6PM for an evening of good food and great friendship! We will provide sandwiches, bottled water, and drinks for the kids. Please bring your favorite dish to share and any additional drinks you may want for your family. This event is open to all current members and alumni as well as anyone interested in finding out more about who we are, so spread the word! Don’t forget! Your annual membership dues and forms are due by Sept. 30, so the picnic is the perfect place to turn them in to our membership chair. For everyone who pays their dues at the picnic—you will be entered into a drawing for a chance to win some great prizes, including gift cards and a free membership! (Must be present to win.) Ladies Socials Ladies’ Luncheon @ Big E’s Ladies’ Night Out @ Anew Tuesday, Sept 20 @ 12:30PM Thursday, Sept. 29 @ 6PM Our Ladies’ Night Out group meets several times a year and has done everything from making personalized candles at Moynahan’s to canning salsa & apple pie filling with the Canning Diva to learning how to incorporate vinegars and oils into drinks & desserts with Fustini’s and so much more! This monthly event is always a great time! Come join us for a chance to relax and socialize over a delicious lunch at one of our many local restaurants. In September you will find us at Big E’s located at 121 E. 8th St. in downtown Holland. Big E's Sports Grill was founded by 2 brothers from Michigan and prides itself on Cold Beer, Great food, Awesome Furniture and Stellar Service. You asked for additional pampering in 2016 at Anew Salon and Day Spa. So now is the time to book your “me time” for Thursday, September 29th. Our evening social and spa treatments will begin at 6 p.m. Let’s relax and enjoy conversation, snacks and drinks. Yes, you can bring your favorite wine or other beverage. Be introduced to the 50 barrel brewing system from the 1940's that brings you such delicious brews as Dragon's Milk, Sundog, Mad Hatter, and Full Circle. Walk along the rows of aging Dragon's Milk Barrels. Explore Michigan's Oldest Craft Distillery which brings us such beloved flavors as Zeppelin Bend Single Malt Whiskey, Barrel Aged Knickerbocker Gin, and Beer Barrel Bourbon. Our goal is to invite all adults; male and female, single or married, younger or older, for a monthly night out. We usually meet for dinner at a local restaurant but sometimes it may be dinner and a movie, or dinner and a concert, or dinner at a member’s home. The tour takes roughly 1½ hours, and includes the full brewing, packaging, and distilling systems. Beer and spirits samples are included on the tour; a complimentary New Holland logo pint glass is also included. Please be sure to wear closed-toe shoes, as the brewing plant is a working production facility. Cost for this Tastings event is only $20 per person and we can accommodate up to 25 people. Join us Sept. 27 at 6:30PM as we head to Shanghai Grill & Bar located at 442 E 32nd St, Holland, MI 49423. Shanghai offers a wide array of authentic Chinese, Japanese & Thai food, such as Kung Pao Chicken, Crispy Roast Duck, Sweet & Sour Pork, Shrimp Tempura, Amazing Tuna Roll, Maki Combination, Pineapple Fried Rice. Grandma Dorothy’s Apple Cake 1 3/4 cups sugar 1 tsp cinnamon 3 eggs 1 1/3 cup oil 2 cups flour 1 tsp baking soda 1 tsp vanilla 1/2 tsp salt 1 cup chopped nuts 2 cups sliced apples 3 Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Beat sugar and eggs. Add oil and mix until creamy. Sift flour, soda, cinnamon, and salt. Add to above mixture—vanilla, sliced apples, and nuts. Turn into greased and floured pan (9”X13” or 10”X10”) Bake for 45 to 60 minutes. Before serving, sprinkle with powdered sugar. HOLLAND AREA NEWCOMERS SEPTEMBER 2016 Book Discussion Station Eleven Monday, Sept. 26 @ 7:30PM Our always popular Book Discussion group usually meets the 4th Tuesday of every month at 7:30PM. (Note the change of date for this month!) We participate in the Herrick District Library’s Book Group to Go so no need to purchase (or track down!) each month’s literary selection. Our next meeting will be Sept. 26 at 7:30PM at the home of Char L. We will be reading Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel. Come join us for a great family event, no matter how old your kids are, at one of Michigan’s best apple orchards! We will meet at Crane’s for a fun-filled day of apple picking. Apples are sold by the pound, so you can pick as many (or as few) as you would like. HAN will provide doughnuts and apple cider. Don’t forget to wear comfortable shoes.
