Your Schools Summer 2016
Summer 2016
Diplomas Granted to Class of 2016
“The Kings and Queens of 2016”
(2016 Class Motto)
The reign of “the kings and queens
of 2016” ended June 1st at Bedford
High School’s 131st Commencement
ceremony at Cleveland State
University’s Wolstein Center.
BHS Principal Samuel J. Vawters
welcomed the 256 members of
the Class of 2016 and their guests.
“Every year, each graduating class
continues to raise the standard by
shattering the goals of the previous
graduating class,” he said. “Each and every year,
I am amazed and in awe of our students and their
accomplishments.” He highlighted several of the
class’s collective and individual special achievements. (To read more about these achievements,
see the “Did You Know?” article on the district
website: www.bedford.k12.oh.us/News.)
Mr. Vawters recognized the teachers of the year
from each school: Erin Black, Glendale Primary
School; Kristen Sutter, Central Primary School,
Kathy Coughlin, Carylwood Intermediate School;
Sarah Popovic, Columbus Intermediate School;
Crystal Brooks, Heskett Middle School; and
Heather Starn, Bedford High School. Ms. Starn,
a BHS social studies teacher, then addressed the
students, encouraging them to take calculated risks
throughout their lives. “Taking risks can lead to
great rewards, like new experiences and career
opportunities. Taking risk can also help you face the
fear of failure and build your confidence,” she said.
Class officers Chase McCullough (president), Asia
Jones (vice president), Jasmine Davis (secretary), and
Brittany Festa (treasurer) presented Superintendent
Andrea Celico with the class gift. “The Class of 2016
has decided to start a fund of $2,000 for a new digital
sign for the front of Bedford High School to mirror
the beautiful new scoreboard in the stadium,” Chase
said. “We are proud to lay the groundwork for such a
wonderful addition to our school.” Dr. Celico thanked
the class for the thoughtful gift and introduced senior
speakers April Walter and Chase McCullough.
April spoke about bravery and overcoming fear, as
she came from a small Catholic grade school and
was scared she would not fit in at Bedford High.
But “from the very first day, I felt a part of the Bearcat
family,” she said. “I soon learned that the Class of
2016 was a tight-knit community. We were a family, a royal family. Back then, we were just princes
and princesses who needed much guidance…..and
we have grown into the Kings and Queens of 2016
despite the many challenges, setbacks and losses we
experienced through the journey of making Bedford
High School our kingdom.”
Chase spoke about a valuable lesson he learned from
his years of volunteering at a daycare center; that is,
how crucial it is for every child to have an adult who
will always act as a champion in the child’s life. He
thanked each member of the BHS faculty, staff, and
administration. “You have all shaped and changed
our lives in some way. Each of you is someone’s
champion,” he said. He encouraged his classmates to
become a champion in someone’s life. “I want you to
love, care and nurture someone who may not see it
anywhere else.”
Following the awarding of diplomas, Mr. Vawters
directed the class members to move their tassels from
the right of their mortarboards to the left, making
them “official” graduates of Bedford High School.
Congratulations to each of you, and the best of luck
for a happy and successful future.

District was once again
awarded this year with two
honors for its good financial

the Auditor of State Award

office of the Ohio Auditor
of State upon completion of
a comprehensive financial

Ohio government agencies
receive this award. The
district was also presented
with the Certificate of

Government Finance Officers

Dress Code Update
The student dress code for Bedford Schools has been
revised to include ANY solid color tops, dresses and
jumpers. Parents and students, please familiarize
yourselves with the entire dress code before returning
back to school. The dress code can be found on the
district’s website at www.bedford.k12.oh.us under both
the Parents and the Students dropdown menus.
Start Mentoring!
The Mentoring Network is a nonprofit organization
whose mission is to help students by “Instilling
Character, Confidence and Leadership through
Mentoring.” The mentors have worked with students
in the Bedford City Schools for several years and are
hoping to recruit new mentors in order to serve more
students. “Volunteer mentors for Heskett Middle School
are greatly needed to help us positively impact our
young men and young ladies,” said Mentoring Network
Community Relations Coordinator Sandra Weeden.
“When you become a mentor with The Mentoring
Network, you’ll not only receive training, but will also
get ongoing support through workshops, one-on-one
coaching and weekly communications from our team,”
explained Keith Tousley, President of the organization.
“This will allow you to fully enjoy the experience of
mentoring while not feeling alone in the process of
helping shape a young person’s life.”
Administrative Updates
James P. Meyer was appointed in May as the district’s Director
of Technology and Information Systems. Kenneth D. Elder was
named the new Principal of Carylwood Intermediate Schools.

Bret Johnson is 2016 Shipley Award Winner
At the end of the school year, the Bedford Board of Education presented Central Primary School 2nd grade
teacher Bret Johnson with the Woodrow W. Shipley Memorial Award, one of the most coveted awards an
educator can receive in the Bedford City School District. He has been teaching for 28
years, 25 of those in the Bedford Schools.
“He is a true servant in every sense of the word,” Central Principal Monique
Winston said. “He always invests so much of himself in his students to take them
to the next level.” Central teacher and colleague Carmen MacCannon said: “He
treats colleagues, parents and students equally…with the same respect, response,
and fairness. He is a staple in our community and school system. We are a
much better district because of his continued selfless service.”
“Because of my involvement in the community and my previous career as
a social worker, I have found the importance of connecting the students I
work with to the bigger world,” Mr. Johnson said. “I am completely in my
element when I am with students exploring new things and helping them
discover the world around them.”
The Shipley award is bestowed annually to a school district teacher or
administrator for exhibiting compassion, generosity, tolerance, fair-mindedness, respect, leadership, intelligence, community service, love of children,
and sense of humor--qualities exemplified by Woodrow Shipley in his 30year career with the Bedford Schools, and later, as a member of the Bedford
Board of Education.
Johnson is presented the Shipley award by last year’s award
recipient Kerry Boscarello, a Glendale preschool teacher.

A Message from the Superintendent
Dr. Andrea Celico
Superintendent of Schools
I hope your summer has been enjoyable and relaxing and that our students and
parents are as excited as we are to start a new school year! As I begin my second
year as Superintendent, I am not only an employee of the district, but I am now a
member of the community, as I have recently settled into my new home in Oakwood.
Last year, a great deal of planning was done in order for us to expand our preschool program. This
year we are pleased to be able to offer additional programming by opening one full-day general
education preschool classroom for age-eligible students residing in the district.
Another project that was planned and organized and will come to fruition this year is the opening of
the Bedford High School COMPASS Academy, a redesigned alternative learning program for our high
school students. You will hear more about this new program in the next edition of Your Schools.
Additionally, we spent a lot of time last year working through our strategic planning process.
A number of focus group sessions were conducted with staff members, parents, students,
community members, clergy, and others to gather feedback, which was used to help formulate
our goals and action steps. This three-year strategic plan will serve as a roadmap for the future of
our district. The plan will be made available to the public soon.
In the upcoming school year, we will continue to work tirelessly on our goals to increase
student achievement, produce graduates that are college and/or career ready in a respectful, safe
environment, and increase our parent and community involvement.
I look forward to another great year and seeing everyone soon. Thank you for all you do for the
children of the Bedford City Schools.
