The Les Cheneaux Islands Antique Wooden Boat Show, held each year in Hessel, Michigan, has been a major attraction since it began in 1978. The show averages 150 entries each year and is one of the largest shows featuring antique and classic wooden boats. Some of the country’s finest boats call the beautiful Les Cheneaux Islands home. Most of these boats are used daily during the summer months as a primary mode of transportation to and from the cottages dotting our area’s 36 sheltered islands. Les Cheneaux has a rich heritage in boat building and repair. Our craftsmen continue to offer some of the finest restoration and repair services available. Entries in the boat show arrive each August from as far as California and Florida and include dinghies, rowboats, canoes, launches, sailboats, utilities, runabouts, large cruisers, racers and classic non-wood. Festival of Arts Held in conjunction with the Antique wooden Boat Show is the Festival of Arts. Artists display and sell a variety of artwork, including photographs, paintings, pottery, stained glass, textiles and jewelry. Around 65 of the Midwest’s finest artists participate in this juried show. The Century Boat Company was founded in 1926 by the Welch brothers of Milwaukee. They were hydroplane racers who saw a market for their boats. The first model was the Century Kid, and by 1928 they were building 90 per year and had out grown their small factory. This prompted a move to Manistee, MI where there was a three story factory available enabling them to expand their line into small inboards. The 1930’s presented tough times, but Century held on with models like the Thunderbolt, which is one of the most collectible wood boats today. In 1933 the company was sold; they then developed a line of inboards and outboards and sold them through a dealer network across the USA. The Sea Maid runabouts carried them through to World War II. After the war the Resorter utility models were designed, and in 1955 the Arabian runabouts replaced the Sea Maids. With the Arabian and Palomino models came the advertising slogan, “The Thoroughbred of Boats”, and also the introduction of the larger Coronado utilities. In 1966 came the Fibersport, and in 1968 Century built its last wooden boat. In the mid 1980’s the company was downsized and moved to Florida, and in the mid 90’s sold to Yamaha. The last Century was built in 2009. Please consider bringing your Thouroghbred to Hessel this year. A special award will be presented. 3/24/16 11:02 AM
