IFSA-Butler Scholarship Application
IFSA-Butler Scholarship
Application Instructions
IFSA-Butler Scholarships
The Institute for Study Abroad, Butler University (IFSA-Butler) offers $1,500 scholarships for semester programs, $2,500
scholarships for year programs and $500 for summer programs. These scholarships are based on financial need. Any
student studying abroad on an IFSA-Butler program may apply for a scholarship, the amount of which is applied toward
the recipient’s IFSA-Butler program fee.
There is no need to designate which scholarship you wish to receive; our scholarship committee reviews all applications
and allots scholarships based on a student’s financial need, program of study and other qualifications.
Program fees and personal costs vary considerably from university to university and from city to city. Large cities such as
London, Dublin, Buenos Aires and Sydney have a high cost of living, and students concerned about finances should be
aware that choosing a smaller city might offer considerable savings.
Designated Scholarships
Students applying for certain programs who meet the host university’s scholarship criteria will be automatically
considered for designated scholarships.
• Massey University: Study Awards of NZ$1,000 are available for semester or year study
• University of Bristol: up to $2,000 per semester for applicants who pay in-state tuition at state universities only
• University of Canterbury: Awards of NZ$2,500 to NZ$5,000 are available. The university also gives “general awards” to
select students upon arrival.
• University of Glasgow: $1,500 for semester or year study (students who pay in-state tuition at state universities only)
Memorial Scholarships
In addition to our regular scholarships, IFSA-Butler offers memorial scholarships in the amount of $3,500, unless stated
otherwise. IFSA-Butler memorial scholarships require a personal essay and are awarded on an annual basis for either
semester or full-year study.

Reporting and Crediting Scholarships
If you are awarded a scholarship, the award amount will be credited toward the student portion of your bill after you
have registered for classes abroad. IFSA-Butler will inform your home university study abroad office of any scholarship
awards. You are responsible for reporting any awards to your home university financial aid office. Be aware that receiving an IFSA-Butler scholarship may result in changes or reductions to the scholarship and loan funds you received from
your home university. Ask your study abroad or financial aid office if such a reduction might affect you.
First Generation College Student Scholarship
This merit-based scholarship helps those who are first in their family to attend college with expenses like airfare, visa
and passport fees, and even a housing and tuition discount. This scholarship requires additional materials and
application procedure, but application deadlines are aligned with the priority and regular deadlines below. Please click
here for more details.
Work-to-Study Program
This program, while not a scholarship, is a project grant opportunity for students interested in contributing their talent
and work while abroad. Strong preference is given to those currently Federal Work Study on their home campus. For
application and open project details, see our website under Scholarships.
Scholarship Application Deadlines
The scholarship application is separate from the IFSA-Butler program application. The deadlines below apply to all
scholarships and financial programs, except for Fill the Gap. Many of the scholarships require additional materials.
Please read through individual scholarship information on the website. You may only apply once to scholarships for
your term abroad. Students who apply by the priority deadline but are not awarded will automatically be considered
again after the hard deadline has passed.
The scholarship committee cannot consider applications that arrive after the hard deadline. Award recipients will be
notified in writing approximately one month after the scholarship deadline.
