They have a wonderfully rich background in the music industry from their experience in producing Sunday Afternoons of Music for both adults and children for the past 33 years. We’ll learn more about that shortly, but first, let’s learn more about them personally! Doreen was born in London, England and immigrated to Los Angeles California in 1947. There, she met her first husband Marvin Marx. Marvin was a radio actor and writer at the time and soon began a TV writing career writing for Burns & Allen, Sid Caesar, Imogene Coca and eventually created the show “The Honeymooners” for Jackie Gleason. She had two sons with Marvin: Myron, a Dr. & Gregory a Reform Rabbi. She has 5 beautiful grandchildren! She started Sunday Afternoons of Music at Beth Am in 1981. Byron was born in Chicago and graduated from the Univ. of Illinois with an engineering degree. After a brief interruption by WWII where he served in the Navy in a special engineering program that serviced all the onboard systems, he ended up in the invasion fleet for Japan at the end of the war. He married his first wife, Marezel, in 1947. She wrote him letters when he was in the service. They were married for 32 years. They had 3 children together, Harry, a doctor, Susan, a grant writer & Jay a lawyer. Byron has 5 grandchildren. Doreen met Bryon on a blind date in 1984. Byron told her on their second date that he knew they would marry! They married in 1986 and now between them, they have 10 grandchildren! They just celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary here at the Suites. Now, more about Sunday Afternoons of Music! Doreen started it in 1981 at Beth Am. She married Byron in 1983 and together they grew the program to include Sunday Afternoon of Music for Children, a series aimed at counteracting the erosion of arts education and the graying of the music audience. Through the decades, Byron & Doreen showcased the artistry of several hundred musicians in recitals and chamber concerts. They sparked a love of music in uncounted numbers of children. They featured celebrated artists and introduced rising stars to South Florida. Together they produced 15 concerts per year including Peter & the Wolf for the Miami Dade school system which was narrated by celebrity narrator, Martin Bookspan. They are an energetic and young-at-heart couple. Byron even started his own business at 60 years old! They are both fearless and passionate about music and now, they have come full circle. Beginning in Sept. They will host Sunday Evenings of Music at the Suites! The last Sunday of every month, where they will showcase videos of their 33 years of concerts. So do yourself a favor and get to know this pioneering couple!
