National Convention
by Bob Demmel
The NCRS national convention was held 21
through 25 July in Hampton, Virginia. Over 600 families attended this year’s edition of the convention.
The event celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the
1963 split-window Corvette and there were over 40
1963 Corvettes on hand representing drag racing,
road racing, and just general fun.
In addition to the 1963 Corvettes on hand, Hendrick Motor Sports displayed the first 2014 Corvette
that was bought by Rick Hendrick at the Barrett-Jackson Auction in January. Dave Hill, previous GM Corvette Chief Engineer, also drove his 2014 Corvette to
the show and allowed folks to take a seat behind the
wheel.
In addition to the cars there were tours of the
Norfolk Naval shipyards, the USS Wisconsin and USS
Ronald Reagan. Next year’s convention is scheduled
to take place in Overland Park, Kansas, an easy drive
from North Texas.
Judging in the NCRS
by Bob Demmel
Most folks have heard tales about the anal retentive judging that goes on in the NCRS. But what most
have not heard about is that all the judges are volunteers who pay their own way to various meets for the
chance to judge.
The NCRS established a judging recognition system for those volunteer judges in 1992. Judges earn
points at each meet at which they serve as a judge.
At a chapter or local meet, they earn 2 points. At a
regional meet a judge can earn 3 points per day that
they judge up to a maximum of 3 points judging per
meet. A national meet allows a judge to earn 5 points
per day up to a maximum of 10 points.
To become a Master Judge a person must earn
100 points. Calculating the travel, hotel costs, and
meals it figures to cost a person about $15,000 out of
pocket to become a Master Judge. The NCRS provides additional recognition at the 200, 300, and 400
point levels. Beyond that they do not track judging
points.
The judges do what they do because they love the
challenge and they love helping owners earn their Top
Flight certificates.

Rolex terey Motorsports
Mon
Reunion
by Neal Bellamy
The 2013 edition of the Rolex Monterey Motorsports
Reunion (formerly known as the Monterey Historic Automobile Races or Monterey Historics) was again held at Mazda
Raceway Laguna Seca near Monterey California on August
15-18. http://www.mazdaraceway.com/rolex-monterey-motorsports-reunion
This was just one of many events held over a two week
period near Monterey California. In addition to the vintage
car races held on two consecutive weekends (the PreReunion and the Reunion), there were numerous car shows
and auctions, and of course, the Concours d’Elegance at
Pebble Beach.
Last March after the Sebring SVRA race, Jane and I
were offered the opportunity to again serve as crew for a
Granbury friend’s vintage racer who had been accepted as
an entrant in the Reunion event (entry is by invitation only).
Our friend, Garrett Waddell, owns/drives a 1963 Z06 (yes,
a real one). He has raced it continuously in Vintage events
since the Dallas Gran Prix of 1984. (Garrett also previously
owned a 1969 L88 car. It was displayed at the NCRS Convention in Detroit two years ago.)
Garrett was also accepted as an entrant in the “warm
up” event, the Pre-Reunion held the weekend of August
9-11. http://www.mazdaraceway.com/track-rental/prereunion-rolex-monterey-motorsports-reunion
This was a bucket list item for me. So with the advantage of going as crew with someone who had previously run
the same event and knew the ropes, we made our plans
in April to fly to San Francisco, rent a car, and stay for two
weeks.
On the first day of Pre-Reunion, the track seemed
empty. Only participants, family and crew were present.
There were about 400 cars total and the variety and quality
was phenomenal. I saw cars I had only read about or seen
pictures from “back in the day.” Lots of Corvettes, Can-Am,
Trans-Am, IMSA and European race cars such as Aston
Martins, Ferraris, Lotus and BMW. We roamed the track,
seeking the perfect vantage point. Even after watching from
the famous Corkscrew turn, we decided that being on pit
road was the best place.
At noon on Friday, I saw on the schedule that there
would be VIP Hot Lap rides in Mazdas driven by instructors for the Skip Barber driving school located at Laguna
Seca. I found the person in charge and asked to get on the
list of riders, expecting that our non-VIP status would not
rate a ride. However, we showed up at the appointed time
and found that no one was in line, so they put Jane into an
RX8 and me into a MX5 and gave us a two lap at-speed
6
ride around the track. At the conclusion of our rides, there were
a dozen people in line. Early bird and all that… Since I have a
Spec Miata track toy, I really enjoyed riding in the newest version
with a driver who really knew the track. Entering the Corkscrew
turn at speed and plunging down the hill that follows was a great
experience.
On Friday night, Garrett was invited to participate in a caravan of cars to downtown Monterey for a car show. I rode with him
in a CHP escorted caravan to a blocked off downtown city block
for the show. At the show, the emcee interviewed each owner to
learn details of the car such as why it was rare/unique, the racing
history, and the characteristics most loved by the owner. It was
amazing to see the cars parked on the city street with no barricades at all. Garrett and many of the other drivers encouraged
kids to have their picture taken while sitting in the car.
On Saturday, Garrett’s co-driver and partner, Ted Filer from
Houston, drove. Garrett drove on Sunday. The format was practice and qualifying in the morning, with races in the afternoon.
On Saturday Ted ran consistent lap times, but their budget 327
didn’t have the power of the more expensive engines, so he ran
mid-pack most of the time.
On Sunday, Garrett’s qualifying attempt ended early when
the steering coupler (a rag-joint vibration damper that links the
steering box to the steering wheel shaft) stripped its splines. He
went off into the gravel at Turn 2, when the car failed to turn no
matter how much he cranked the steering wheel. They did not
have a spare nor did any of the many fellow competitors who
stopped by to offer parts or assistance. A new part was ordered
Monday and installed on Wednesday.
Jane and I used the days between the two racing events to
play tourist. We drove the 17 Mile Drive around Pebble Beach,
drove California Route 1 through the Big Sur area, and went to
Paso Robles for winery tours. We also went to the Hearst Castle
and toured the immense hilltop home formerly owned by William
Randolph Hearst.
The Reunion event’s featured marque was Corvette as 2013
is the 60th anniversary of the Corvette. GM had a huge display
of cars including about a dozen C7 coupes and convertibles, a
cut-away rolling C7 platform, as well as several GM museum
historic race cars (e.g., SR2 and Delmo Johnson’s #3 1963 Z06).
Dick Guldstrand was on hand signing autographs, along with
Ryan Hunter-Reay (2012 Indy Car Champion) and Sir Jackie
Stewart. Jay Leno was also seen in the paddock and that Peter
Brock – designer of the Stingray and Cobra Daytona Coupe
– was there promoting his new book about the Stingray and
signing autographs. 2013 also marked the 50th anniversary of
the introduction of the Porsche 911, so they were also an accompanying featured car.
There were 550 cars invited to run, including 45 historic
Corvette racers. There were many cars that had not been at
the Pre-Reunion. A great number of rare historic cars were
present such as a 1931 Blower Bentley LeMans entrant, a Dan
Gurney Weslake powered Formula One car from 1971 (the
only USA car to ever win a Gran Prix race), several Alfa Romeo
8C 2300s, two Corvette Gran Sports, Ol’ Yaller, a magnesium
bodied Bugatti Type 37S, and a Ferrari Testa Rossa just to
name a few of my favorites. Also included were many pre-War
racers, Formula 1 cars (mostly of the DFV era), many more
Can-Am, Trans-Am and IMSA cars. A large number of the cars
had been driven by legendary motorsports names such as
Gurney, Foyt, Donahue, Follmer, Stuck, Parnelli Jones, and
Andretti. I took over 1,000 pictures of anything that struck my
fancy.
On Thursday, Garrett ran the morning practice/qualifying
but the engine refused to cooperate and started to miss and
developed a minor oil leak. The problem was found to be a
broken rocker stud. Ted replaced the stud and fixed the oil leak
and the engine sounded healthy.
On Friday in the morning practice/qualifying, the engine
seemed to run fine but did not develop the expected power. Ted
performed numerous checks and finally determined the timing
needed adjustment.
Garrett then hopped in the car and drove in another CHP
escorted convey to The Quail Lodge where a major car show
and auction were in progress at the very upscale resort. Motorsports celebrities such as Michael Schumacher and Sterling
Moss were in attendance for a brief Q&A session.
http://signatureevents.peninsula.com/en/Motorsports/Motorsports.html
Disaster struck in the Saturday morning session when the
engine apparently developed a head gasket leak and sucked
all the water out of the system and then out the exhaust, causing the engine to get so hot that it stopped running altogether.
In spite of these mechanical issues, both Ted and Garrett remained upbeat and thoroughly enjoyed being part of the event.
“That’s Racing” was the watch word.
On Saturday night we went to a Corvette Museum dinner. http://www.corvettemuseum.org/registration/monterey/
info.shtml There were a couple of hundred Corvette owners in
attendance. The main purpose was a fund raiser for the Museum. Tadge Juechter (GM’s head Corvette guy) was the main
speaker. He narrated many facts and figures about the new C7
such that the speech seemed to be an infomercial.
On Sunday, Jane and I went to Pebble Beach for the Concours d’Elegance. http://pebblebeachconcours.net/pages/3007
This was the 63rd annual event hosted on the 18th fairway of
the famous Pebble Beach golf course. It is hugely important to
collector car enthusiasts and has many ordinary spectators like
us. There were 249 cars being judged. Lincoln custom coachwork cars were the primary featured marque.
We bought tickets that allowed us reserved parking, a hospitality room with breakfast and lunch, and a big screen video
of the event, so getting into and out of the event was fairly
easy. Access to the event is via one two-lane road and free
parking is scarce. Most spectators ride buses from elsewhere.
We arrived at 6am to be part of the “dawn patrol” (people
who arrive early and get to watch the cars moving from their
transports and being arranged for display on the 18th
fairway). Once again the historical value of the cars was
staggering. Lots of 1910-30 exclusive models, many Ferraris and Bugattis, a dozen 1950s Indy roadsters, BMW
507s, nine Alfa Romeo 8C 2300s (only 188 produced in the
early 1930s, and one sold at the nearby auction for $6.7M),
Packards, and on and on.
Three of the Alfa Romeo 8C 2300s on display
We watched for a couple of hours, and then toured
several of the manufacturer displays. After breakfast, we
returned to the display area and found it was elbow-to-elbow
crowded such that picture taking was nearly impossible.
Apparently it is a tradition for the ladies to dress in period
dresses and fancy hats, so watching the crowd was also
entertaining.
There were numerous exhibition-only classes and numerous “Judged” classes. The first, second and third place
winners were honored to drive their cars across the stage at
the 18th green. From among all of the first place winners, a
single Best-of-Show car was selected. This year, the overall
winner was a 1934 Packard 1108 Twelve Dietrich Convertible Victoria owned by Joseph & Margie Cassini of West
Orange, NJ. (below)
To me, the trip was well worth the time and expense.
I saw cars I had only read about or seen in pictures. The
value of the cars we saw has to be rated in the hundreds
of millions. And being up close and actually hearing a twin
supercharged 1931 Alfa Gran Prix car and big block Chevy
Can Am cars (as just two examples) was wonderful.
If you plan to go in 2014, make reservations early and
expect to spend a bunch of money in California. But if you
are a car person, it is a must-attend event.

The Bowling Green Convention and Visitors
Bureau has established a website showing hotels
that have rooms available. The site is new and the
amount of information is in the beginning stages but
now you have somewhere to go to look for rooms. The
BGC&VB will maintain this page and update as they
receive inputs from the hotels. As time progresses we
know that cancellations will be occurring and when
they do, the hotel will provide the information for this
page. The good folk there deserve our sincere thanks
and gratitude for taking on this task and making every
effort to ensure we have a great event. Please do not
call them for information as this site was established
to cut down on the contacts with both them, the NCM,
