Winter 2013 - Peacehaven Farm
Peacehaven Winter 2013 News from the Farm Peacehaven Community Farm A Letter from the Executive Director Dear Friends, T he cooler weather of fall has always marked a time to rest and reflect at Peacehaven. We give the land and all our garden volunteers a time to recover as we await the warmth and rebirth of spring. This fall as the land rests many of our volunteers will continue to swing hammers as work continues on our first home, Susan’s View. Other volunteers, along with board members and staff, will reflect, plan, and dream as part of our strategic planning process that will ready us to open the doors for Susan’s View and welcome those who will live there next year. As I watch this work unfold I am inspired by all who have joined in to help us and I am reminded that working and growing As I watch this work together is a core ethic at Peacehaven. unfold I am inspired by all who This newsletter will highlight many of the partnerships we enjoy and others have joined in to help us and I in our community whose work we am reminded that working and admire. Your support of our Annual Campaign, Seeds of Hope, ensures that our growth continues. By making a gift to Seeds of Hope, you are working with us to build an affordable housing community and sustainable farm where adults with special needs can live independently within the embrace of the community around them. Please join us with a gift to the Seeds of Hope campaign. A quick look through this newsletter and I don’t have to tell you that Peacehaven is a place of celebration. I look forward to next year when the folks living in Susan’s View will celebrate holidays and birthdays at the farm. As I just celebrated my November birthday, my wishes turned to Peacehaven. Please look inside for information on our new Birthday Campaign initiative. I hope you will make my wish come true by supporting my birthday campaign and also by pledging your own birthday. We celebrate all of our partners and others working to make our community a better place for everyone. Thank you to them and to you for all you do. “ ” Blessings, Buck 2 Working Together with Area Schools 4 Honorariums and Memorials 6 Working Together to Worship 7 Working Together with Habitat for Humanity ... and a special insert with photographs from the Bash and Dash and information about our new Birthday Campaign. Working Together ... with Area Schools O High Point University students in the Alpha Pi Omega service fraternity volunteered to work on Susan’s View. It was amazing how much some of them knew about construction! ver our four growing seasons, we have observed that the farm provides vocational, educational and social activities for all people. There are many lessons to be learned on the farm. It seems the opportunity to experience dirt and the many forms of life that exist in the garden and on the farm is new to many people—young people especially. The farm provides many teachable moments and it is our responsibility to educate people about environmental sustainability and its importance to the long term viability of the farm and the quality of life we value for people on the farm and our world. We believe in the power of an informed public and see Peacehaven as a demonstration site to educate our community of the benefits of environmental stewardship and sustainability. We are especially grateful for the many students from area universities and colleges who are partnering with us. Psychology students from GTCC volunteer every semester at Peacehaven. Their instructor seeks for them to understand first-hand the impact of our ongoing economic crisis and the reductions in funding for mental health care by reaching out to non-profit providers and working together to make a positive impact. Peacehaven Community Farm Page 2 Peacehaven Community Farm • www.peacehavenfarm.org Students in the Global Experience class at Elon University are coming out every Friday to clean up the construction site and to salvage items from the build…they even pick up wet dogs!! Additional groups from Elon include Epsilon Sigma Alpha, Campus Kitchen, Elon U and Beta Alpha Psi along with a number of individual students who volunteer faithfully. At right: Engineering students at NC A&T have become regular volunteers both in the garden and on Susan’s View. They have applied for a grant to fund special projects at Peacehaven and we are excited that they are partnering with us! At left: UNCG graduate students from the Educational Research Methodology Department have been volunteering since our first season. The farm provides the perfect location for them to bring their families and enjoy working and learning together. Additional groups from UNCG include Beta Alpha Psi, Make a Difference House, UKirk, and Alpha Delta Pi. Working Together ... to Feed the Hungry I t was another fun season in the garden and around the farm. We are humbled by the support of our community—you fill our garden with love and fresh veggies. Thank you. This year your contribution of over 9700 volunteer hours enabled us to contribute over 1200 pounds of fresh produce to help feed people in our community who do not have enough to eat. We worked with Church World Service (CWS) in Greensboro and most of our food went to refugee families from Nepal, Bhutan, Malaysia and multiple East African countries. It was a privilege to see our produce go straight from the garden into the hands of these families. We are working with CWS to expand our relationship next season and actually have these families join us in the garden for our workdays. Our farm managers are engaging in a comprehensive strategic planning process and will be incorporating these “Farm to Family” - We distributed fresh produce to refugee families in plans to ensure that the garden will serve the needs of both an apartment parking lot. our residents and our community in the coming years. In 2014, they will be working to expand our garden season to provide food to our residents year-round. Your birthday can give them hope. Birthdays…we all have them. Now, we can work together and use them to do something big. Pledge to give up your next birthday, ask for donations instead of gifts, and provide hope and change lives. How Does it Work? Go to our website and start a birthday campaign. We will set you up with a social fundraising page – and ask your family and friends to donate to Peacehaven instead of giving you a birthday present. EASY as pie – or birthday cake! We’ll use 100% of the money you raise to build homes for people with special needs. Pledge now, and we will remind you near your big day! $5,000 Matching Dollars Pledged to Birthday Campaign Kickoff Buck Cochran, Peacehaven’s Executive Director, pledged his November birthday to kickoff our Birthday Campaign initiative. Happy Birthday Buck ... Happy Day Peacehaven!! Pushing 50 for Peacehaven This crazy guy to the left celebrated his 50th birthday by pushing a car for 50 miles and raising more that $26,700 for Peacehaven. Thank you JOEY MOTSAY for Pushing 50! Please see page 5 for all those who donated to this cause. (P.S. – You don’t have to push any cars, unless you just want to!) MAKE YOUR NEXT HAPPY BIRTHDAY A HAPPY DAY FOR PEACEHAVEN! Working Together ... to Worship P eacehaven welcomes people of all faith traditions and spiritual paths. For many people, Peacehaven is a holy place. As much as we celebrate that, we also are full of gratitude for the many opportunities there are in our community to worship together. We look forward to sharing worship with our future residents and staff (as they desire) and we are especially excited about the Salvage Garden Sensory Worship Service. This service gathers at First Lutheran Church in Greensboro on the 2nd and 4th Saturday of every month at 10am. For more information visit www.salvagegarden.org. Working Together ... with Artists A dedicated group of creative people meet each week to develop marketable items with the wool from Peacehaven sheep. They have fun AND their work is laying the ground for a fiber arts program that will engage our first residents in meaningful work. The quality of their work is remarkable and we are excited that we will have available this holiday season a variety of items for purchase at the farm and on our website. 8 piece nativity set ... $50 2013 angel ... $10 Felted soap ... $12 Page 6 We were pleased when we asked John where he could best hear God’s voice and he answered, “PEACEHAVEN!!” My Experience at Salvage Garden by John Van Hine S alvage Garden is a place that restores hope, inspires change and helps to make our community understand that people with special needs just want to feel they belong. On October 10, my mom and I went to Salvage Garden where the theme was learning to listen to God. We enjoyed the service very much, especially the music. The focus was finding God everywhere when we are listening for him. I interviewed the founder Melissa Guthrie and asked her how Salvage Garden got started. She told us she has a son named Tommy who has autism. It was hard for Tommy to sit through a regular worship service, and she wanted to create something that would help people with all kinds of special needs. At Salvage Garden, it’s not like a regular service where you have to be quiet and still. Here you can talk, walk around, sit in a beanbag and get an instrument to play along with the music. I also met Ches who told me Peacehaven Community Farm • www.peacehavenfarm.org he came there because sometimes he had a hard time hearing God’s voice. He wanted to hear what the listening was all about and also to support his friends. After the service I met some of Ches’ friends too. Melissa reminded us we should listen and look for goodness in all people and if we do, we will hear God’s voice. I think everybody should try Salvage Garden, a place where everyone belongs. “ Melissa reminded us we should listen and look for goodness in all people and if we do, we will hear God’s voice. I think everybody should try Salvage Garden, a place where everyone belongs. ” Working Together ... with Habitat for Humanity O ur partnership with Habitat for Humanity began before any hammers were ever swung… actually it began well before Guilford County awarded Peacehaven a $375,000 HOME grant in November 2011. We are thankful for the depth of this relationship as we needed to work together for a year and a half before we ever broke ground. It was time well spent to improve the design and strengthen our relationship. Susan’s View is a complex building that has required both Peacehaven and Habitat to “dig deep” to keep the construction moving forward. We continue to learn from each other and to have fun in the process. We are thankful for Habitat’s commitment and expertise in green building. Susan’s View will be the first Net Zero Energy group home in the nation. We hope that this first home will serve as a model to direct our future development and, hopefully, a catalyst for other supportive service providers across the nation. It is an honor to work with Habitat Greensboro to build Susan’s View. More than 250 Peacehaven supporters joined us on August 24 to celebrate the raising of the first walls for Susan’s View. We were thankful to Once Upon a Child, Brick Church UCC and Westminster Presbyterian for sponsoring the celebration.
