Additionally, the Spyglass Hotel implosion was featured on Criss Angel’s nationally televised show “Mindfreak” which was broadcast live on A&E and watched by several million. Clearwater Beach was shown and mentioned continually throughout. That kind of PR is more powerful than the 450 sticks of dynamite it took to implode the building. Criss Angel The internet and media exposure, coupled with the traffic to the newly transformed beachfront called Beach Walk, is a PR stunt that would make Houdini proud. As some of Clearwater’s primary sources of commerce are Tourism and Real Estate—I needn’t state what’s happened with the latter—I think driving people to Clearwater by trick or by treat is brilliant and gets my 5-star vote. On a Friday night, you get a character, a prop, a line of dialogue and a genre, all to include in your movie. 48 hours later, the movie must be complete. Upon completion it will show at a local theater, usually during the following week. When I first heard of this preposterous idea, I thought, “It’s impossible that a film worth watching could be made from start to finish in 48 hours”. I mean… isn’t filmmaking a serious business of take two, three, four or more…costing big production dollars? I was soon disabused of that notion after watching some of the winning films at www.48hourfilm. com. Two film screenings were held at Channelside Theatres on July 23rd. Some 600 people turned out for the screenings. There was a refreshing mix of films this year, which supported the fact that Tampa Bay has an incredible wealth of talent from production crews, actors, editors and musicians. “The fact that the filmmakers turned out the high quality they did within 48 hours made Coco and I proud to be a part of this fantastic film community!” remarked Kerri. After much deliberation, the judges finally decided on the winners for the 15 categories. Kerri stated, “After seeing the work put out this year, we knew that we really wanted to celebrate and honor the filmmakers by throwing an awards party.” NOVA 535 in St. Petersburg (one of the sponsors) provided the perfect venue to throw an amazing awards party. Clips from each of the nominated films were shown as well as a full screening of the Best Film nominees. On Friday night, July 18, the teams gathered at the kick-off event held at Limey’s Pub in St. Petersburg; 25 of the 28 teams showed up to pull a random genre out of a hat. Almost every team drew a different genre, which they were required to adhere to as they wrote, shot and edited a short film during the 48 hours. Aside from adhering to the genre, all teams were given a set of required elements that they had to incorporate into their movie in some way. Lat er t h i s month, more than 150,000 Pinellas County students will once again begin making their daily trip to and from school in one of the largest school districts in our state. Whether traveling by car, bus, bicycle or on foot, students may face some challenges as they make their way to and from school in the coming months. or at intersections, and to make eye contact with drivers of vehicles that are stopped to ensure that they are seen before crossing. If no sidewalk is available, pedestrians should walk facing traffic and bicyclists should ride with the flow of traffic. Motorists should plan to add a few extra minutes to morning and afternoon trips, and extra care should be taken when driving near schools, crosswalks and bus stops. Drivers should also be prepared to stop for school buses when picking up or dropping off students. Florida law requires that drivers bring their vehicle to a full stop when approaching any school bus displaying a stop signal. Motorists must then remain stopped and are prohibited from passing the bus until the signal has been withdrawn. This law also applies to motorists driving in the opposite direction of a stopped school bus unless there is an unpaved space of at least 5 feet, a raised median or some other type of physical barrier. Drivers can also expect some changes in their daily commutes associated with the start of another school year. The addition of more cars and buses on our roadways each morning and afternoon will certainly result in increased traffic congestion, particularly near schools and bus stops that have been idle for the past couple of months. School zones will require reduced speeds and brief stops as crossing guards assist younger students who negotiate busy streets I encourage parents to talk to their while walking to school. Needless to say, I am deeply saddened and the world has suffered a great loss of a friend to all mankind. ‘Doc’, (Isaac) was more than a poor boy who picked cotton in Memphis, TN, who then rose to become an icon in the music industry, later winning an Oscar for the legendary music score ‘Shaft’. He was a father & husband, He was an activist, humanitarian, He was a multifaceted pioneer. He was the International Spokesperson for the greatest grassroots movement of all time: The World Literacy Crusade! The one thing that will be most missed about “Doc” is that he was a good man who cared and loved all people. He always brought joy and happiness to everyone who came into his presence. Isaac can never be replaced; therefore, he will never be forgotten. Doc, wherever you are now, please know that you are loved by all and your living has not been in vain.” MEMPHIS, TENN. (August 12, 2008) A memorial service will be held on Monday at Hope Presbyterian Church, 8500 Walnut Grove, Cordova, Tennessee from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. to celebrate the life of pioneering soul icon Isaac Hayes, who passed away on Sunday at the age of 65. Born in the rural poverty of a sharecropper’s family on August 20, 1942, in Covington, Tennessee, Hayes rose to artistic success as an accomplished Grammy, Golden Globe and Academy Award winning composer/musician, paving the way for his fellow African Americans in the arts and entertainment world. As well as being a published author, actor and radio personality, Hayes is a coronated King of Ghana in western Africa. Instead of a palace, he built an 8,000 square foot educational facility as he felt that education and literacy are the keys to a successful life. He is survived by his wife of three years, Adjowa Hayes, and their two–year–old son, Kwadjo Hayes, and ten children—Jacqueline Fields, Felecia Hayes Fisher, Veronica Hayes, Vincent Hayes, Melanie Hayes, Nikki McGhee, Heather Hayes, Isaac Hayes III, Darius Caston and Lillian Bryant—14 grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren. -Rev. Alfreddie Johnson, PhD ————————————— The family issued the following statement: “We are overwhelmed with the outpouring of support and love from Isaac’s dear friends, colleagues and fans from every corner of the world, and we thank each and every one of them for their kind thoughts and prayers. While he was an iconic figure to many, to us he was husband, father and friend. We will ever miss his love, wisdom, humor and the familiar comfort of his voice.” To celebrate Hayes’ constant support of the Stax Music Academy and his Stax Records Legacy, the Hayes family, in lieu of flowers, requests that donations be sent to: Stax Music Academy, 926 E. McLemore Avenue, Memphis, TN 38106. Checks can be made out to Soulsville, and please specify “In memory of Isaac Hayes.” Condolences may be sent to the family at [email protected] ————————————— “To the world he was Black Moses, Ike The Ripper and, later, Chef from TV’s South Park. To the rest of us who had the extraordinary opportunity to work with him in recent years, he was just Isaac. He was humble, unpretentious and refreshingly down-to-earth. Not bad for a man who delivered a record-setting seven #1 albums to the Billboard R&B chart, scored numerous awards (including multiple Grammys and 2 Academy Awards), appeared in over three dozen films and was named a Royal King of Ghana along the way.” – Concord Music Group ————————————— “Isaac Hayes exemplified all that is Stax. We are all very fortunate to have worked with a visionary who changed music in indelible and profound ways. His talent was matched only by his kindness of spirit. On behalf of the entire Concord/Stax family we express our deep sympathies to his family, friends and fans all over the world.” – Concord Music Group president & CEO Glen Barros ISAAC HAYES IN MEMORIAM ”At the end of the day, we are responsible for our own lives. If anything happens to us, don’t blame somebody else. Backtrack and look at what you did to contribute to that. You also contribute to your successes. Once you learn that, you’re on your way.” – Isaac Hayes “In London, while I was working on hit records as a sound engineer, I had the fortuitous opportunity to meet the great ‘hot buttered soul man’, Isaac Hayes, at his London concert. Later, I met him again through youth education and we became very good friends. “Isaac Hayes changed the course of black music and—with his vision—changed the course of children’s literacy around the world. “I personally look forward to meeting him again. Good luck, Isaac! You were a true Renaissance Man: a man who could do anything!” – Simaen Skolfield Photographer and Sound Engineer ————————————— “As a co-founder of the Community Learning Center, I have had the distinct honor of working with Mr. Hayes on several occasions in forwarding our mutual goal of improving the literacy and lives of youth. “The thing that has struck me the most about him is his great love for his fellow man. When the Center first opened, he led a two mile march through Greenwood from the Kings Highway Recreation Center to the new Community Learning Center. Following the pomp and circumstance of the ribbon cutting Mr. Hayes was to have returned to his hotel. Instead, he stayed for hours. He stayed at the Center so he could sign autographs and talk to every single person that had come to see him. He took the time to talk to mothers about their struggling children, teens about their goals, and to answer the questions of his many fans. “Over dinner with my husband and I, Isaac told us stories of his youth, and growing up poor in the South. It was during these stories that I was struck again, but this time by his great sense of humor. “Mr. Hayes, you are loved very much and will be missed.” Page 4 – 727.230.9691 – TAMPA BAY INFORMER – To Advertise, Email: [email protected] – Visit www.tampabayinformer.com -Holly Haggerty “The Heart, Your Busiest Muscle – Take Care of it” by Desiree Lotz M ost people know that they need calcium to build healthy bones and teeth, but did you know that calcium contracts your muscles while magnesium relaxes them? With all kinds of fun games and contests, the kids are introduced to soccer in a relaxed way, letting them explore the game through play and interaction with the other kids and our experienced coaches. Deficiencies in calcium and/or magnesium affect your nervous system. Its job is to send signals (messages) to all your organs and muscles to do their job. If your nerves can’t send the signals, your body will malfunction as the organs and muscles don’t get the “message”. The Foundation is a registered non-profit 501-c-3 corporation established in 2008, and is funded by individuals who agree that art & music are essential to the development of well-rounded individuals who can think outside the box. Jennifer’s favorite saying: “To discover new oceans, you must have the courage to lose sight of the shore” - Lord Chesterfield. Jennifer Nolletti was a 26-year-old artist and elementary school art teacher in Pinellas County. On October 5, 2007 she was tragically killed by a reckless driver who ran a red light. It is in her honor that we proudly established The Jennifer Nolletti Memorial Art Foundation. Throughout her life, Jennifer had a passion for art, taking classes in photography, drawing and painting. In 2002, she graduated from the University of North Florida with a bachelor’s degree in Art Education. Jennifer was a Tampa Bay native, returning to Pinellas County after college to pursue a career as an art teacher. She was committed to her students and tried to inspire a love of art by focusing her lessons on real pieces of artwork and artists as she wanted her students to develop a deeper understanding of art and a strong framework for a better appreciation of art. She was adored by her classes and didn’t treat them like elementary students, but like art students. Along with her passion for art, Jennifer had a love of music. She played guitar in her spare time and was an advocate and fan of the local music scene in the Tampa Bay area. The board of the foundation is comprised of those people closest to Jennifer. Her parents Rosemary and Nick Nolletti, her fiancé Joe Sanders, family friends Al Dimmer, Megan Pargov ,Vanessa Sepa, Meghan Lance, and Sarah Williamson. For our first fundraiser, we wanted to create an event with activities that Jennifer would have liked to attend. The obvious answer was a day filled with art and music, two of her passions. The benefit will be held on Sunday Sept. 14, 2008 at Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater, from 12-4:30 and will be geared towards children. There will be spin-art and sand‑art booths, and a variety of activities such as those Jennifer taught her own students. These will be open to the public. The silent auction/art show will run all day from 12pm-10pm. We are proud to have representation of many different media, artists and artisans. We are especially excited that Peter Max has donated two of his works. Dale Chihuly is also donating a set of books about his artwork. A ticketed concert will finish the day. Three local bands are donating their talents to our cause; The Crunge (a Led Zeppelin tribute band), The Black Honkeys, and Basic Rock Outfit. Tickets are available only through The Jennifer Nolletti Memorial Art Foundation (727-784-5487 or [email protected]), Basic Rock Outfit (www.myspace.com/joesanders7), or The Black Honkeys.
