WHO WE ARE
CSC has spent 25 years supporting children with special needs to reach their full potential. The
Centre began thanks to the determination of a small group of parents and professionals. They had
a vision for a local development centre that would offer assessment, diagnostic and intervention
services to children with special needs that would involve the family in all aspects of services. CSC
continues to live by this vision today.
Over the past 25 years we have had the opportunity to connect with countless families, professionals,
educators and community providers. Their stories have touched us and their lives have impacted how
we’ve grown over the years. CSC began as one program offering services to 30 children and families.
We now serve over 250 children with complex and severe needs and touch over 2000 people with
our services, resources and training annually.
CSC strives to offer evidenced-based programs and services that are family-centered. Innovation,
quality and professionalism are of the upmost importance in the delivery of our specialized programs.
CSC is committed to being responsive to community needs by addressing gaps in supports and
services to children with special needs.
MISSION
Highlights
Some highlights from the past year include:
• Expanding our Snoezelen space to offer expanded
sensory opportunities to more children.
• Collaborating with Red Deer College to extend
the training offered to distant learners through
videoconference technology.
• Teaming up with the Central Alberta FASD
Network to ensure that CSC therapists became
specialized in conducting Fetal Alcohol Spectrum
Disorder (FASD) diagnostic clinics.
• Partnering with the Autism Follow Clinic at the
Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital to offer a oneday workshop for parents to learn more about
the unique challenges of parenting teenagers with
Autism.
• Working with the Tetra Society to create adapted
equipment to meet the needs of children in our
programs.

BOARD CHAIRPERSON’S
REPORT
As a parent with a daughter who has a rare syndrome, I was recently sitting in
a room with other parents from Alberta tasked with dealing with the future of
our little association. We were doing a brain storming activity which consisted
of letting our imaginations wander, without limitations, of how we saw our
organization, what we would like to be and represent for Albertans with the same
disability. I had a sudden jolt, a “frisson” up my spine, a vision of other concerned
parents long ago, wanting something better, something local for their special
children. I actually, for a moment, was able to see and feel the past of another
organization with which I am very involved.

Highlights
• The Directors participated in Board
Development sessions to set priorities for
their work. As a result, Board recruitment
strategies and processes were developed to
ensure skilled and experienced individuals
are added to the Board on an annual basis.
• The Board unanimously agreed to move
forward with proposed advancement
activities. Their commitment enables
CSC to move forward with program
development, marketing and fund
development initiatives.
• Board members were tireless volunteers
at several of our special events. Jackie
D’Costa not only headed the Cake
Committee for Evening of Decadent
Dessert, she contributed a delicious
birthday cake for CSC’s 25th year.
• Two members of the Executive Committee,
Jill Hockin and Wayne Doan, sat on the
Strategic Planning Committee.
Inspiring Possibilities has been the theme of this 25th commemorative year at Children’s Services Centre. I
wonder if the original group of parents, from those 25 plus years ago, could ever have imagined the CSC of
today. From a vision in someone’s living room it grew into a program offering services to 36 families. Today it
is a child development centre and community resource that serves over 250 children with complex and severe
needs and touches over 2000 family and community members with services, resources and training. Just the
building is a wonder to behold with its 3 floors buzzing with activity, energy and possibilities from the smallest
of clients to the administration looking ahead to an even bigger and brighter future. Could the original
founding families have imagined this place? Can we imagine what the next 5, 10, 25 years will bring?
It is the goal of the Board of Directors to work with the amazing staff of CSC to support the mission of
assisting children with special needs to reach their full potential. In August we attended a Board Development
workshop and continue that work in order to enhance our role in the ultimate function of CSC. In the spring
of 2010, we came to the realization that to maintain the essential services and to broaden what occurs daily
at CSC, operations had to be reorganized to ensure sustainable funding. In order to truly reach our ever
growing population, we cannot rely on government funding alone. Fund raising has been an integral part of
running the centre but was always seen as an “extra” piece added onto other jobs resulting in a big question
mark for budget planning. The recent creation of the “Advancement Team” has added another facet to the
workings of the centre. Its role is to explore the “business” side of CSC and the expansion of our programs,
resources and educational outreach. Taking care of business enables the child focused side of the centre to
exist and flourish. We are on the cusp of change as the Advancement Team forges ahead into new domains to
ensure our development and capacity building in the future.
With this organization, I am now able to sit and let my imagination wander, without limitations. With constant
growth, technological advances, a motivated team and the most incredible cliental, we can only begin to
imagine the possibilities of our exceptional place for exceptional children.

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
REPORT
25 years of supporting children to reach their potential! What a milestone to
reflect upon and celebrate! CSC opened in May 1985 with one program offering
assessment and follow up services to 36 children and their families. This year the
Centre operated 4 core programs, 3 additional services and many other initiatives
that touched over 2000 children, families and community partners.
At the Welcome Back Breakfast in September, three individuals who were integral
to the creation of CSC, Marg Gummow, Sandee Birse and Wayne Doan, spoke to
staff about the expectations and efforts that resulted in both the start up and long
term direction of CSC’s philosophy and service delivery. Their words helped staff
to understand where CSC came from in order to know better where we need to
go in the future.
As for development in 2009-2010, the Snoezelen Room was expanded through the
efforts of Jan Gervais, EASE Occupational Therapist, and others. New pieces of
equipment were added including a cart to allow apparatus to be moved around the Centre for use in the various classrooms
and the gym. Many more children can now have sensory experiences to enhance their learning and development. The staff
also worked with the Tetra Society to create adapted equipment for CSC children for learning and recreational activities.
Yoga activities were incorporated into EASE programming and 2 staff, Melanie Harris, physical therapist and Twyla Galisky,
rehab assistant, trained in a 4 day Radiant Child Yoga course. Their efforts enabled CSC to offer yoga groups for CSC and
community children in which adaptations and accommodations can be made. Feedback about the benefits of yoga for the
children has been very positive from both parents and staff.
A number of professional wellness activities were initiated for CSC staff in 2009-2010. Beginning in September, about half of
the staff were provided with regular reflective coaching sessions with JoAnne Hayden or Lori Jack. These sessions allowed
staff opportunities to reflect on both their CSC and personal responsibilities. After winter break, a team development process was begun to help individuals and teams better understand and improve their functioning. These 2 initiatives, reflective
practice and team development sessions, were introduced to enhance staff wellness and will be expanded upon in future
years.
In the spring, Evening of Decadent Dessert provided opportunities for former families and staff to get together. The original
6 staff, Fay Dionne, Sue Mitchell, Terryl Makuk, Dwaine Souveny, Rosemary Calverley and myself, reminisced about the first
several years of CSC. We reflected on the strength and integrity of the founding families’ beliefs that enabled the services
and programs at CSC to grow.
Also at Evening of Decadent Dessert, the CSC Storybook was introduced. The storybook is filled with heartwarming and
inspirational stories from families who share their experiences at CSC. Some of the families were involved 20 or more years
ago and others as recent as this past year. Each story speaks to the impact CSC has had in helping children with special
needs develop and providing training and support to their families. Copies of the storybook are available in the CSC library
or for sale at the reception desk.
The culmination of reflection and celebration of CSC’s first 25 years is a concerted effort to develop more programs and
services for children with special needs and their families and communities. There is still much that is needed for them. A
new strategic plan has been developed to guide CSC’s next 5 years. My hope is that the upcoming years will engage everyone who is touched by CSC’s programs and services in “imagining possibilities” for themselves and others.

GROUP PROGRAMS
Group activities that are adapted for individual needs
enhance learning opportunities for children with special
needs. Our multidisciplinary teams are able to adapt most
activities (i.e. bike riding, sledding) to meet the individual
complex needs of children. With the support of our staff,
parents and caregivers are able to learn strategies for
supporting their child at home and in the community. For
families, groups offer a safe place to connect with other
parents who are facing similar challenges. Some of our

the summer FAST (Fun, Adapted, Safe and
Totally Cool!) camp. Participants enjoyed

ASSESSMENT
AND INTERVENTION
Assessment and Intervention are the cornerstones of CSC services. Our two multidisciplinary teams,
teachers and consultants provide assessment and intervention at home, in the community and within
our centre-based programs. The services can be tailored to individual needs with options for long-term
intensive programming, short-term intervention and various assessment possibilities.

The therapists that conduct assessments
for the purpose of diagnosing children
became trained to diagnose children
suspected of having Fetal Alcohol Spectrum
Disorder (FASD).
• CSC therapists continue to receive
consultation services from Dr. Goulden,
neurodevelopmental pediatrician from
the Glenrose Rehabilitation Program;
Dr. Lorrain, child psychiatrist from Child
Adolescent and Family Mental Health and
Dr. Moshenko-Mitchell, psychologist with
the Anxiety Clinic.
• Two of the Early Intervention Consultants
were trained on the Hanen program and
hope to offer groups to families in the
future.

stand by my decisions and actions while going through
the difficult process of learning the challenges of being a
parent of a child with disabilities.”

CSC hosted a two-day conference on
sleeplessness and managing with difficult
behaviour with bestselling author Mary Sheedy
CSC has always offered specialized resources to the
community. Currently CSC offers books and DVDs
or videos on special need topics, toys and specialized
and adapted equipment for children enrolled in
our programs. In addition, we have expanded our
Snoezelen space and made it possible to use some of
the equipment in other parts of our facility making it
possible for more children to benefit. Our resources
