handsome production and an important work, being the first publication of Bligh’s original
log. The first volume (undated) was issued late in 1936, see Du Rietz 1125. See also
Pertelote 117: “In the light of enquiry, it seems clear that this was the first ship’s log to be
published with full details. The transcription from the Admiralty records alone took three
months, and the setting presented many difficulties. All the events of the day were recorded
on the page devoted to that day in the space allotted to the hour, or even half hour, at which
they were recorded. When necessary, hand-writing can be compressed, but not so type. The
easy solution would have been to use various type-sizes, but this would have produced an
ugly irregularity throughout the book. By arduous calculation, a standard setting able to
absorb all irregularities was evolved. The volumes are unpretentious, and, if they have any
beauty, it is like that inherent in good machinery, and resides in their functional simplicity-to be recognised by the expert, who can compare them in his mind’s eye with the horrid
spectre of what, with less ambitious care, they would have been.” #21834

We intend to produce many more in future on a variety of subjects and we would prefer where possible to send these by email as PDF file
attachments or links to files on our Website . This has the obvious advantage of reducing costs and enhancing the speed of delivery and
the email/PDF versions will also be enhanced with colour illustrations. A fully illustrated version of this list in pdf format is available on
our website or will be emailed on request. Likewise we encourage you to send orders by email, fax or telephone.
