Being the eldest, Corkie remembers her father working for the Santa Fe Railroad and her Mother being very strict. Hence earliest childhood memories involve cleaning and helping our her Mother with other household chores. Mary Luci Murguia Mary Luci Murguia, otherwise known as “Corki” was the eldest child of eight born on October 3, 1919 in Leon, Mexico City to Frances and When Corkie was about two years old she moved to the United States, to Ft. Madison Iowa where her Grandfather had been working. Corkie’s Grandpa came to Mexico to bring her whole family back to America with him. As we begin the new year, we will be reviewing resident rights review, CPR status and a few other items this month or next. Finally, it is very important that during these cold winter months although you may not thirst as you would with warmer temperatures, that you stay hydrated continuing to consume and drink plenty of fluids, always having them on hand to avoid dehydration. Corki maintained the home and prepared meals that were served at the same time everyday. “When my husband got home, he expected his meal to be ready,” shared Corkie. Both Randie and David really enjoyed baseball so the family spent much time watching the boys play during their games. When the family had time off together, they would venture to Chicago to watch the Cubs play as Corkie had as a young girl. Corkie also really enjoys dancing. She is also a HUGE Elvis fan, pictures fill her room today of Elvis. When she was a young woman she went to Elvis’s home where he was to return in one hour, she remembers her husband not wanting to wait the one hour and leaving. “I was so close to meeting him, if only we could have waited theat one hour!,” explains Corkie. Today Corkie enjoys three Grandchildren and seven Great Grandchildren. At Culpepper Place Senior Living , she has really added a spice of life with her personality and witty remarks bringing a smile and laugh to all that she encounters. Mary and David on their Wedding Day As a little girl she was voted the first Mexican Queen in Iowa, which was very exciting to her. She also remembers making many trips to Chicago to watch the Cubs play. It was several years later that a friend, Lucile had told a man who lived in Burlington Iowa, that he just had to come down to meet a woman by the name of Mary Luci. A man by the name of David M. Murguia, did just that. Two years later, Corkie 21 and David, the two married on January 24th, 1942. “He was the most handsome man.. all of the woman were after him! Says Corkie” David served in the Marine Core during WWII and overseas, close to Japan. Together they raised two wonderful sons, Randie and David. David today lives here in Branson and sadly, Randie was killed in an accident at the age of 21.
