Well, Stansbury certainly turned on the charm this year for the Anzac Day Dawn Service. The weather
was glorious (if a little chilly) and the sunrise was spectacular. It is so very pleasing to see the large
number of people who attended the service here in Stansbury (and elsewhere, of course) numbers seem
to grow each year. There were locals and visitors, young and old in attendance. The parents who bring
their children along are to be commended; these children are our future and need to know of the sacrifice
and grief caused by the stupidity of these conflicts. Maybe one day there will be no more, we can only
hope!
The barbecues situated along the foreshore between the playground and the Foreshore Park entrance
have all been replaced with brand spanking new ones. The old ones had become very tired and worn out
and some of them didn’t even work at all so the Progress Committee decided it was high time they were
replaced. The new ones are free to use with a push button operation. So folks, make hay while the sun
shines, or errr, cook barbecue while the warm weather remains.
Stansbury has a representative on the Yorke Peninsula Council’s Access Advisory Committee. This
group meets and makes recommendations for small works necessary to improve access in our towns for
people with mobility difficulties. While we are very lucky that Stansbury has good footpaths and wide
roads making it relatively easy for people using mobility scooters etc. to move around town, if anyone
has come across a situation that they think could be improved please let me know and I will pass on your
suggestion to the representative to take to the next meeting.
Recycling: Newspapers can be dropped off at the Tidy Towns yard (dry, flat-packed and tied with string)
or placed in the covered trailer which is situated there. It is important to recycle as much as we can to
reduce the amount of rubbish going into landfill so if you are unable to deliver your papers to the yard
please place them in your yellow recycle bin
The Visitor Information Centre has a “Planet Ark” recycling box for all your used printer cartridges.

Market Season is sadly over for another year but what a lovely market we had as a finale! The
weather was absolutely glorious and there was so much to see – with a great range of stalls, the
incredible classic cars and of course the beautiful boats taking part in the famous Saltwater
Classic.
Once all of the stall holders were happily settled, I managed to take a few photographs of the day. I
have uploaded a few of my photographs to Facebook, including some of the sunrise before the stall
holders arrived. We have such a lovely town it would be a shame not to share it with everyone –
and there is so much to see and do. Although I think I might have to invest in a pedometer to track
my steps next year – I think I would easily reach my 10,000 recommended steps on market days.
Market season might be over, but planning is already underway for next season. I’ve been listening
to feedback from everyone with something to share – so if you have ideas I’d love to hear them.
The Stansbury Seaside Markets are run to benefit the whole community – bringing trade in for local
businesses and adding interest, colour and vibrancy for locals and tourists alike. I think it’s
important for our market to be something of which we can all feel proud. Of course, I hope
everyone understands that I can’t promise all suggestions will be implemented (straight away or at
all) but I genuinely believe that feedback is vital for improvement, and thus all ideas will be warmly
received and considered.
The dates for Stansbury Seaside Market Season 2016-17 have been finalised, and are as follows:

The Market Registration form is still currently under revision, but it will be ready by the end of May.
It would be great to have more locals participating as stall holders to showcase the best Stansbury
has to offer. So, if you’ve ever considered having a stall at the markets, next season could be your
season! Along with uploading the form to the website, it will be available from the Visitor Centre
and I will also post a link on Stansbury Seaside Market Facebook Page. So if you’re keen to be a
stallholder, make sure you keep an eye out.
The Visitor Centre has still been quite busy throughout April – with plenty of visitors from interstate
and overseas popping in to see us. It shouldn’t really be a surprise, since autumn weather is my
favourite time of the year.
I speak to many people who only visit Yorke Peninsula during the summer, and although there is
so much to do during this time (fishing, swimming, surfing, BBQs) I encourage them to return at
other times of the year too – to see the difference between the four seasons. Autumn - with the
calm, sleepy, sunny days and brisk nights; winter – when everything is green and lush and people
are enjoying toasty bonfires; and spring – when all the salt lakes are full of water and migratory
birds, and all the wildflowers are in bloom. Although I understand the appeal of holidaying
somewhere tropical (I was in Darwin at the end of April for my sister’s birthday), I still don’t think it
compares to having four seasons a year.
As far as I’m concerned, Yorke Peninsula has it all!
STANSBURY LIONS
Each month there is a report in the Scribble of the activities of the Lions Club here in Stansbury.
Members work hard and support local individuals and organisations as well as the wider
community and other national Lions projects.
The Lions Club of Stansbury Dalrymple is also part of an International organisation and what
better proof than the recent link with the Accra Diamond Lions Club in Ghana, Africa.
Three years ago, the students of Stansbury School raised money for a disadvantaged school in
Ghana. Our local Lions club donated to this as well, and then, over a period of time, organised a
safe transfer of funds to the Lions in Accra.
In turn, that club added to the amount and last month, 8,000 GHI (Ghanaian cedi) was spent on
education materials for the school.
It is amazing how much can be purchased on site to assist students in their attempts to gain an
education.

Chi Kung is a gentle form of energy practice. It is a beautiful flowing combination of movements and
breathing techniques that stimulate energy flow and help promote your natural resiliency to stress
and illness.
Monday mornings, except public holidays. Registration at 10.45am and gentle Qigong exercises
commence at 11am. All welcome, wear loose, comfy clothes. Cost is $2.00.

Our Mother’s Day morning tea will be held on Wednesday 4th May with a Lavender and Lace
theme. If able, please wear something in keeping with this theme.

On May 18th, Mary Watson from the Women’s and Children Hospital will give a talk and collect
“premmie baby” items.
“Second Chances-Restoring Hope” is our recipient for the Care-a-thon.
Handover is the 25th May and will be followed by a pooled lunch.

Well, another Seaside market Season has ended; thanks again to all our helpers and supporters of our Museum
Food Stall. Our Stansbury Museum Thankyou Morning Tea will be held in the Implement Shed up at the Stansbury
Museum on Friday 13th May at 10 am. Invitations have been sent; and we really hope that you will all attend, and
see our new exhibits and the changes that have been made. There will also be a Classic Car display in the front
Car Park of the Museum on the day as well; ‘’PARKING WILL BE AVAILABLE IN PARRINGTON STREET; and the
BACK GATE WILL BE OPEN FOR VISITORS TO ACCESS THE IMPLEMENT SHED.’’ We are very fortunate to
have an old Milking Stand to be put on display....... Does anyone have 1 or 2,- 10 or 12 gallon silver coloured milk
cans that the Museum could borrow, loan or have donated to complete our display? We would be very grateful. The
Stansbury Museum is considering starting an R.S.L. Memorabilia Collection. If you have any objects that could be
included in this collection we would like to hear from you.
One of our stalwart volunteers Marge Mabus is on the Sick list and I’m sure that you will all join me in wishing her a
very speedy recovery.

STANSBURY BUTTER FACTORY;
In the early years many households kept 2-5 cows for their own use, with the cream being separated from the milk
using a hand operated separator. Over the ensuing years Dairying on Yorke Peninsula flourished with Jersey cows
being the favoured breed due to the high quality of milk they produced. Between July and September of 1921,
meetings were held in several Southern Yorke Peninsula Towns to discuss the possibility of a Butter Factory being
established. Stansbury was voted the best placed town, due to the facts that it was on the mail routes of many
surrounding towns; and had a bi-weekly Steamer ship service to Adelaide- allowing for much quicker and safer
transport of the produce than was currently being used. Opinions were also sought from the producers all across
S.Y.P.as to their thoughts and feelings about the proposal. In October 1921 Mr. Wight, a representative from the
South Australian Farmer’s Union came to Stansbury to speak to the farmers and to encourage them to buy shares
and become share-holders in the Company; paving the way for the Factory to begin. Over 1000 share applications
were received and paid for by the end of that year. In December 1921, a meeting was held to discuss the purchase
of a suitable building and the S.A. Farmer’s Union purchased a site and building suitable for the purpose. In January
1922 a representative from S.A. Farmers Coop Union Ltd. came to Stansbury to finalise arrangements and contracts
for remodelling and renovating the stone building situated on the corner of Pitt Street; which had been purchased
from Messrs. Pitt Ltd. A concrete floor and receiving platform were to be erected and a 20,000 gallon reinforced
concrete water storage tank was to be built as well. The Dairying plant had been purchased and was ready to be
installed when the renovations had been completed. A large Refrigerator for cold butter and a Cool Room for
storage, grading and packing eggs would also be installed. The residents of the town had purchased shares to the
value of 6000 Pounds Sterling, on the proviso that the business would go ahead. On August 6th 1922 a trial run of
the machinery was successfully held. The first cream churn at the new Factory on the19th of August amounted to 21
boxes of choicest butter being produced [just over 1 1/2 tons] 150 dozen eggs were also received. On the 7th
September 1922 the Official opening of the Stansbury Butter Factory was held. Production steadily increased with
the Townspeople taking their cream down to the Factory as well as the farmers. On the 7th of October 1930, the
Stansbury Cooperative Butter Factory won Second Place at the Empire Dairy Show held in London. This was
against 42 other competitors. On the 1st March 1931, an invitation was issued to the farmers and their families to
visit the Factory and observe the workings; a Company Technical Specialist, Mr. AJ Cook would speak and also
answer questions. This was a most successful day. By 1932 there had been a 50% increase in production with 150
farming families attending an Agricultural Bureau Meeting held at the Factory; 1936 saw extensive improvements
being installed due to the increased volume in trade. At its peak, 2,400 pounds of Butter were produced weekly. In
1941, the Commonwealth proposals regulating butter price, quality and quotas, threatened to cause the closure of
many Butter factories, including Stansbury, but this was averted. During the World War 11, there was no milk supply
to the Stansbury townspeople; Mr Edward Buttfield [Ted], who owned a house and 100 acres of land near the corner
of Adelaide Road and Saint Vincent Highway, and had a small herd of dairy cows; was asked if he would be willing
to supply milk to the town households, and collect the cream for the Butter Factory as well.
A milk float and horse were used to deliver the milk and cream to the Factory. After the War, he continued until the
return of his son Albert from Active service. Albert took over the job and continued until he left the district.
Unfortunately, as the price of wool increased, the farming communities bought more sheep and sold their cow herds.
Dairying declined ,and on August the 22nd 1951 production ceased. 31st of October 1951 the Stansbury Butter
Factory officially closed; with all staff losing their jobs. The business switched to Minlaton, and was run from there.
The cream collected was tested and graded then sent to factories in Adelaide for manufacturing into butter. The
factory building and land was sold becoming a garage with a house being built on the property.
