Speaker Biographies SpeedNews Aerospace Raw Materials & Manufacturers Supply Chain Conference Dawne S. Hickton: Vice Chair, President & CEO • RTI International Metals, Inc. Dawne S. Hickton is Vice Chair, President and Chief Executive Officer of RTI International Metals, Inc., one of the world's largest producers of titanium mill products, and a manufacturer and distributor of fabricated specialty metal components and engineered systems for the aerospace, industrial, defense, and energy markets. Ms. Hickton was named Vice Chairman and CEO on April 27, 2007, President on October 20, 2009, and has served as a member of RTI's board since 2007. Ms. Hickton has over 25 years of diversified metals experience, including more than 12 years in the titanium industry spanning several business cycles. Previously, Ms. Hickton was employed at USX Corporation, where she worked not only with the parent organization but also with its subsidiaries: US Steel, American Bridge Company, and US Steel Mining Company. From 1994 through 1997, she was assistant professor of Clinical Law at the University of Pittsburgh. Ms. Hickton is a Director of FNB Corporation, where she serves on the Executive, Compensation and Corporate Governance and Nominating Committees. She is an officer and member of the Board of Directors of the International Titanium Association. Ms. Hickton is a 1979 graduate of the University of Rochester and received her J.D. from the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Law in 1983. Ms. Hickton resides in Pittsburgh with her husband, the Honorable David J. Hickton, and their children. Dr. Kevin Michaels: Partner • AeroStrategy Kevin Michaels, AeroStrategy Partner and co-founder, leads the firm’s Americas office in Ann Arbor. He has 25 years of aviation experience, including hundreds of consulting engagements for leading aviation and aerospace companies across the globe. Dr. Michaels is a globally recognized expert in the aerospace OEM and MRO sectors and also has significant expertise in business-to-business marketing, customer satisfaction, and strategic planning. Prior to founding AeroStrategy, Dr. Michaels was Director, Strategic Development, with Rockwell Collins Government Systems and a Principal with The Canaan Group, an aerospace consultancy. He began his career as a project engineer with Williams International, a leading gas turbine OEM. Dr. Michaels holds a Bachelor's degree in Aerospace Engineering, MBA degrees from the University of Michigan, and MSc and PhD degrees in International Relations from the London School of Economics. John Byrne: Director-Aircraft Materials & Structures, Supplier Management • Boeing John Byrne serves as Director of Aircraft Materials and Structures for Boeing Commercial Airplanes, Supplier Management. In this position, he is responsible for strategic development, contracting and supplier management of the metallic and composite raw materials, fabricated parts and assemblies, forgings/castings, structural standards and major structures components. Mr. Byrne joined Boeing in 1987 as a quality engineer at the Fabrication Division in Auburn, Washington, following five years of work with the United States Department of the Navy. He held a variety of quality and manufacturing assignments across the division. In 2001, Mr. Byrne was named Director of the Machine Parts Manufacturing Business unit, which produced complex machined parts and assemblies for Boeing single- and twin-aisle commercial airplanes. His next assignment was the Director of Business Operations and Supply Chain Management for the Fabrication Division of Boeing Commercial Airplanes. His responsibilities included business and strategic planning, work statement control and coordination of supply chain and work placement activities for all of the division’s fabrication sites in the United States and Canada. He joined Supplier Management in the spring of 2003 and assumed his current role in January of 2011. Mr. Byrne currently serves as the Chairman of the Board of Directors for Ural Boeing Manufacturing, a joint venture between the Boeing Company and VSMPO. He also serves on the Board of Trustees for the Washington State University Foundation and has been a past President of the Auburn Valley YMCA. David Yoho: Senior Vice President • Vulcanium Metals David Yoho was named Senior Vice President in 2008 to coordinate the global sales and procurement functions for Vulcanium Metals Inc., and its subsidiary, Vulcanium Metals International in Northern Ireland. He joined the company in 2000 as VP of Commercial Products to develop the non-aerospace segment of the titanium market. Mr. Yoho's entry into titanium distribution started in 1993 and he began his metals experience with a low carbon steel mill in 1989. During his tenure at Vulcanium, Mr. Yoho has helped build Vulcanium into one of the largest independent (non-mill affiliation) titanium service centers in the world. Vulcanium Metals Inc. is an independent titanium stockist with FIRSTCUT+® facilities in Chicago, Illinois, and Belfast, Northern Ireland. With offices located throughout North America and Western Europe, Vulcanium serves customers in approximately 30 countries. Mr. Yoho earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Broadcast Business from Northwest Missouri State University. She is an accomplished leader with more than 15 years of experience in sales, operations, supply chain and global strategic sourcing for technology oriented companies. Ms. Martell has had a recent focus in the area of mergers and acquisition, leading efforts on target screening, functional diligence and post transaction integration. Ms. Martell is currently responsible for the global CIRCOR Aerospace material sourcing function with focus on spending in India, China, Morocco and other emergent market locations. Ms. Martell joined CIRCOR from Motorola, Inc., where she was the Strategic Sourcing manager for a US$120M systems integration operation located in Anaheim, California. She held a number of roles within Motorola and the former Printrak in purchasing, production and logistics in support of biometric fingerprint identification. She has previous experience in sales and marketing, account management and business development with Wyle Electronics, Mikon Computer Systems and Tapes Inc. Ms. Martell holds an MBA degree from the Marshall School at the University of Southern California and a Bachelor of Economics from California State University, Long Beach. Lloyd O'Carroll: Senior Vice President-Research • Davenport & Company Lloyd O'Carroll is the Metals Equity Analyst for Davenport & Company. His equity research coverage includes aluminum, steel, and specialty metals companies. He is the author of The O’Carroll Aluminum Bulletin, a subscription-based research service that is distributed to producers, metal traders, end users, distributors, and others. Mr. O'Carroll was the Metals Equity Analyst & Chief Economist, BB&T Capital Markets, from August 1997 through November 2005. Prior to that position, he was the Corporate Economist for Reynolds Metals Company for 19 years. His functions included macroeconomic, aluminum industry, and commodity analysis; strategic planning and corporate development; author of the Economic Comments; and member of the Reynolds' Commodity Hedging Committee. Mr. O'Carroll earned undergraduate and graduate degrees from North Carolina State University and is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA). William Nielsen: Director-Marketing • Brush Wellman Alloy Products William Nielsen is Director of Marketing for Materion Brush Performance Alloys (formerly Brush Wellman Inc.). Mr. Nielsen joined the company in 1998 as General Manager of the Lorain, Ohio, facility. Mr. Nielsen was appointed Marketing Director for Aerospace, Mining and Energy Markets in 2001, and became Director of Marketing in 2008. He also leads the company’s Growth Team. Mr. Nielsen holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Metallurgical Engineering from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. Prior to joining Brush Wellman, he held various operations and commercial management or executive positions at US Steel, Republic Steel and Ampco Metals. His career in the materials industry spans more than 35 years, during which time he has invented, developed and commercialized new materials for use on aircraft and in other industries. He is a Lean Sigma Green Belt. Mr. Nielsen resides in Houston, Texas, with his wife and five children. Tim Shumate: Sr. Business Development Mgr. • ATK Aerospace Structures Tim Shumate is currently a Business Development Manager for ATK’s Aerospace Structures Division focusing on commercial aerospace applications. ATK is a large aerospace and defense company with revenues of $4.5B. ATK has been involved in the design, development and manufacture of composites aerospace structures, and the automated processes used to manufacture these structures. Mr. Shumate has been working in the aerospace materials and structures industry for the past 25 years. He has previously worked in various engineering, program management, and business development roles for companies such as McDonnell Douglas, SGL-Hitco, and Cytec Engineered Materials. His experience and background gives a broad and unique understanding of the aerospace composites structures and advanced composites materials industry, its history, the technologies used, and business trends. Like many children of company founders, Ms. Speed delayed joining the family business. However, a few years after college, she acquiesced, putting to use her degree from Cal Poly State University and her acumen for business and marketing.
