Safety Symbols
1
Have you ever seen one of these symbols?
2
Canada uses two standard sets of symbols to identify hazardous materials.
The Hazardous Household Product Symbols (HHPS) • developed for common products used around the home. • the shape and picture shows what and the degree of danger.
The Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) • developed for products found in work places or science laboratories. • Many workers must undergo WHMIS training every year.
• Includes symbols, labels and MSDS sheets (Material Safety Data Sheet)
Both sets of symbols provide warnings about the hazards of using such products, and precautions to take while using such products.

Hazardous Household Product Symbols
Did you know that the warning symbols are based on
shape? The more corners a symbol has, the greater
the risk. Read the label to find out how to use the
product safely and what precautions to take.
5
Drag the correct HHPS symbol and shape to the boxes beside its description. When you are done, click on the answer button to check your results.

Compressed Gas
Any material that is normally a gas, but has been chilled and put under pressure inside a container, is a compressed gas.
Warning!
if you break the container it will rocket across the room
if you heat it, it may explode
if it leaks you could get frostbite
Precautions:
 store in a safe location
 tie it down during transport
 handle with care
9
Flammable and Combustible Material
Flammable catches on fire easily at room temperature
Combustible catch on fire if heated
Precautions:
 Keep away from open flames
don’t heat it (room temperature only)
10
Oxidizer
Any material that can cause other materials to burn by supplying oxygen. No spark will be necessary.
Precautions:
store in a location away from flammable and combustible materials.
11
Poisonous and Infectious Materials
Division 1: Poison
Immediate serious health risks (coma, death).
Precautions:
 label containers
 don’t eat or drink anything
 use gloves
 dispose safely
12
Poisonous and Infectious Materials
Division 2: Toxin
Materials that do not have immediate effects, however, may still have very serious consequences.
For example: cancer, reproductive problems (harm to the baby), changes to your genes, or irritation.
Precautions:
 label containers
 don’t eat or drink anything
 use gloves
 dispose safely
13
Poisonous and Infectious Materials
Division 3: Biohazard
Materials that cause diseases in people or animals. Examples: bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites.
Precautions:
 label containers
 don’t eat or drink anything
 use gloves
 dispose safely
14
Corrosive
Warning
Can cause permanent burns to skin, eyes, etc.
Precautions:
 Handle with gloves
 Don’t place on high shelves
 Put cover back immediately
 Rinse out used bottles
15
Dangerously Reactive
Very unstable!
1) React quickly with water to make a toxic gas.
2) React with itself when bumped or dropped.
3) React with itself (join together or break down).
Precautions:
 Handle with care
 Don’t change temperature

Lab Safety Worksheet
1. Now that you have learned about what the product safety symbols mean, list some precautions you will take if handling these types of products.
2. What kinds of products do you think you will use in this science unit that may fall under the title of hazardous products?
3. What does WHMIS stand for?
4. What does HHPS stand for?
5. Draw the WHMIS symbol for:
a) Flammable and Combustible Material
b) Corrosive Material
c) Poisonous and Infectious Material Causing Immediate and Serious Toxic Effects
6. Look around your household. What materials can you find that have either WHMIS or HHPS symbols. List the products and what their symbols mean.
