ABORIGONAL STUDENT BURSARY
This award was established in 2015 by Joan McKay in an effort to support aboriginal students in School District 57
with their post-secondary education.
Number of Awards: 3
Amount of Each Award: $1,000.00
Eligibility: Must be a self-identified aboriginal student.
Criteria: Demonstrated satisfactory academic achievement and financial need
Selection Process: Selected by District Awards Committee
BEN GUILLIAMSE MEMORIAL BURSARY
This award was established by the Kiwanis Club of Prince George to honour one of their members, Ben Guilliamse.
This award will go to a student who has participated in Science Fairs within School District No. 57 and want to
pursue a career in the Sciences.
Number of Awards: 1
Amount of Each Award: $500.00
Eligibility: Open to all students in School District No. 57 who want to pursue a career in the Sciences
Criteria: Demonstrate satisfactory academic achievement and financial need
Selection Process: Selected by District Awards Committee
Special Conditions: A letter of reference or certificate outlining active involvement in a school Science Fair.
BOB HOWAT MEMORIAL BURSARY
This bursary was established in 1996 to honor Bob Howat, a deceased director of the Spruce Credit Union. The Bob
Howat Bursary is offered, on a rotating basis, to students graduating from secondary schools within the City of
Prince George.
Number of Awards: 1
Amount of Each Award: $750.00
Eligibility: Open to students who attend school within the City of Prince George.
Criteria: Demonstrated satisfactory academic achievement, financial need, and ability to achieve educational
goals. Demonstrated leadership or involvement in extra-curricular and/or community activities.
Selection Process: Selected by District Awards Committee
Special Conditions: Awards are to be distributed as follows: June 2016– Kelly Road Secondary School
A letter of reference outlining leadership or involvement in community must accompany application.
Recipients do not have to be members or a son or daughter of a member of the Spruce Credit Union; however,
when two students have equal qualifications for the award, preference will be given to a student who is a member
or a son or daughter of a member of the Spruce Credit Union.

BUCKHORN ELEMENTARY P.A.C. BURSARY
This award is given to a graduating student who attended Buckhorn Elementary School, who intends to pursue a
post-secondary education at any recognized educational institution (including Trade School).
Number of Awards: 1
Amount of Each Award: $500.00
Eligibility: Open to students who completed Grade 7 at Buckhorn Elementary and attended Buckhorn Elementary
for at least 3 consecutive years including Grade 7.
Criteria: Demonstrated satisfactory academic achievement and is in financial need. Demonstrated volunteer work,
participated within the community and/or school events; show leadership qualities with a willingness to help
others. Applicants must indicate current career goals.
Selection Process: Selected by District Awards Committee
Special Conditions: A letter of reference outlining volunteer work, community/school participation, leadership
etc. must accompany application.
CENTRAL BUILDERS’ HOME BUILDING CENTRE BURSARY
Number of Awards: 1
Amount of Each Award: $250.00
Eligibility: Open to students who attend school in the City of Prince George.
Criteria: Demonstrated satisfactory academic achievement and financial need.
Selection Process: Selected by District Awards Committee
CHRISTOPHER WATT MEMORIAL BURSARY
This award was established in the fall of 2001 by the Nukko Lake Parent Advisory Council, to honour the memory
of Christopher Watt, son of Rob and Bonnie Watt. Christopher’s parents have been members of this community for
over 20 years. His father, Rob Watt, has been a teacher at Nukko Lake Elementary School for over 20 years.
Christopher Watt attended Nukko Lake. He was known as a “friend to all” and one who welcomed new challenges
with the belief “one could succeed”.
Number of Awards: 1
Amount of Each Award: $500.00
Eligibility: Open to students who attended Nukko Lake Elementary School for a minimum of two years.
Criteria: Demonstrated satisfactory academic achievement, financial need and commitment to self-improvement
as evidenced by 2 letters of reference from school district personnel or other involved adults.
Selection Process: Selected by District Awards Committee
Special Condition: This award is targeted at students who do not meet exacting academic standards yet
demonstrate potential in other areas and a desire to improve their lives.
2 letters of reference as noted above must accompany application.

CORPORAL DARREN JAMES FITZPATRICK MEMORIAL BURSARY
Corporal Darren James Fitzpatrick was born in Burnaby, raised in Prince George and graduated from Kelly Road
Secondary. Darren was the 141st military casualty of Canada’s mission in Afghanistan. He will forever be
remembered as the proud Canadian and courageous leader he was. This award was established as a tribute to the
brave service of our military troops in the defense of our country and will be awarded to a grade 12 student from
School District No. 57 pursuing a career in the Canadian Forces.
Number of Awards: 1
Amount of Each Award: $1000.00
Eligibility:
Award #1 - Preference will be given to a student from Kelly Road Secondary meeting the criteria. If there are no
students from KRSS then the award is available to any student within School District No. 57 meeting the criteria.
Award #2 – Available to any student within School District No. 57 meeting the criteria.
Criteria: Demonstrated satisfactory academic achievement and financial need.
Selection Process: Selected by the District Awards Committee
Special Conditions: Student must intend to pursue a career in the Canadian Forces. Award will be given upon
confirmation of acceptance from the Canadian Forces.
CRUISIN’ CLASSICS CAR CLUB OF PRINCE GEORGE BURSARY
The Cruisin’ Classics Car Club of Prince George established an annual bursary in 1987. Applicant must enroll in an
approved post-secondary education program related to the automotive industry.

Amount of Each Award: $500.00
Eligibility: Open to students who attend school in School District No.57. Students must intend to pursue their
education and career in the automotive industry.
Criteria: Demonstrated satisfactory academic achievement and financial need.
Selection Process: Selected by District Awards Committee
CUPE LOCAL 3742, MEMBERSHIP BENEFIT APPRENTICESHIP/CAREER AND TECHNICAL TRAINING
PROGRAM CLOSED BURSARY
Members of CUPE 3742 are support workers for School District No. 57.
Number of Awards: 1
Amount of Each Award: $600.00
Eligibility: Open to students enrolled in a Secondary School Apprenticeship Program or a Career and Technical
Training Program, who are the son, daughter or dependent of a member in good standing of CUPE Local 3742.
Criteria: Demonstrated satisfactory academic achievement, financial need, and ability to achieve educational
goals.
Selection Process: Selected by District Awards Committee
Special Conditions: A recipient from the Apprenticeship Program must continue the apprenticeship beyond
secondary school with an approved apprenticeship training program.

Karl Anderson left Denmark at an early age as a member of the Danish Navy and made his way to Canada, arriving

sternwheeler landing in South Fort George. In 1914 Karl moved his store to a permanent building on George Street
in the new town site of Prince George. Karl was a member of the Rotary Club of Prince George as well as the
Supreme Lodge of the Danish Brotherhood in America. This award is given to male students who intend to pursue

A.L. FORD MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
This annual scholarship was established in 1995 by Isabel Ford as a memorial for her late husband, A.L. Ford. A.L.
Ford was a communications pioneer in Prince George, serving 48 years with CN Telegraph. From the arrival of
telegraph services to Prince George to the evolving telecommunications services of the 1970’s, A.L. Ford worked in
areas that we now call “information technology”.

BC ACHIEVEMENT SCHOLARSHIPS
For the 2015/16 school year, 3,000 top B.C. graduates with the highest cumulative average based on
courses required for graduation (both required and elective) are eligible to receive a $1250
scholarship voucher to use towards their post-secondary tuition.
The Ministry will determine recipients based on students’ achievement in Grades 10, 11, and 12 courses that
satisfy 2004 Graduation Program requirements (including elective courses). Grad Transitions will not be included. A
cumulative average percentage will be calculated and form the basis for
awarding the BC Achievement Scholarship.
Recipients must:
 Meet basic eligibility requirements
 Fulfil graduation requirements of the 2004 Graduation Program by August
31st of the student’s graduating year
 Attain a "B" (73% or above) or better average in their Language Arts 12 course:
 English 12

There are 55 BC Excellence Scholarships available to recognize well-rounded B.C. graduates.
Winners will have demonstrated community service, both inside and outside their schools, and shown
aptitude and commitment to their chosen career paths. They will receive a $5,000
scholarship voucher to use for post-secondary tuition.
Students must be nominated for this scholarship by their school. If nominated, the student must
submit the application to their school, who will forward it to their school district.
Nominees must:
 Meet basic eligibility requirements
 Be in their graduating year, with graduation to occur by August 31 or sooner of the year in
which they are nominated
 Have at least a:
o "B" (73% or above) in their Language Arts 11 final mark

This awards was established by family and friends of Bev Hosker. Born in Fort St. John, Bev was a member of the
first ever female RCMP troop. She went on to serve 24 years with the RCMP throughout British Columbia. Bev was
in integral member of the District Parent Advisory Councils in both Quesnel and Prince George, and a tireless
advocate for the rights of students and parents. She was a particularly strong believer in the need to increase the
numbers of young women pursuing studies in math and science. This award will go to someone who embodies

This scholarship recognizes the many contributions made by John Stevens to public education in Prince George.
During his career, John served School District No. 57 (Prince George) as a teacher, principal and assistant
superintendent. After his retirement, John continued his interest and support of public education through the
Education Heritage Committee of the Prince George Retired Teachers' Association and the Springboard to Success
Scholarship Committee partnership between the school district and the Prince George Community Foundation.
John was a positive man who looked for the best in everyone he met and everything he did. His family and friends
established this award in his memory in 2012.

PATHWAY TO TEACHER EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP
The Pathway to Teacher Education Scholarship (PTES) is awarded to 20 outstanding high school
graduates who have demonstrated a commitment and aptitude for a career path in K-12 teaching. Each recipient
will receive a $5,000 scholarship voucher to use towards tuition in their teaching program at a designated BC postsecondary institution.
A student cannot win both a Pathway to Teacher Education Scholarship and a BC Excellence Scholarship.
To apply, please complete an application form and submit it to us along with all required documents by March 31,
2016.

A student applying for this scholarship must meet basic eligibility requirements and be:
 In their graduation year with graduation to occur by August 31
 Eligible for a B.C. Certificate of Graduation (Dogwood Diploma)
Selection Criteria for Applicants
We’re looking for applicants who are:
 Maintaining a ‘B’ average (73% or above) in all Grade 11 and 12 courses required for graduation
 with no more than one Grade 12 mark at a ‘C+’ level (67% or above)
 Showing evidence of commitment and aptitude for a teaching career in the K-12 system
Selection of winners will be finalized by August 31st and vouchers will be mailed to winners’ addresses on record
in the first week of September.
The vouchers can be redeemed when the student is registered and attending an approved teacher
education program at one of the following nine Faculties of Education:

Eligibility: The P.G.D.T.A. shall make available annually eight scholarships. One scholarship shall be awarded to a
student from each of the secondary schools in School District No.57 which register
grade twelve students provided that there are qualified candidates. If there are no candidates from one or more
of the schools, or if a school’s candidates are deemed ineligible either through insufficient qualifications or failure
to meet the eligibility criteria, then those awards shall be made available at large.
Criteria: i) The candidate must show a high level of academic achievement in the final year of
secondary education.
ii) The candidate must be a child or a grandchild of a current or past PGDTA member.

A perpetual scholarship was established in 1986 to commemorate the visit to Prince George of their Royal
Highnesses, the Prince and Princess of Wales. These are endowed funds held by the Prince George Community
Foundation.

Criteria: Demonstrate a high record of academic achievement in both Grade 11 and Grade 12. Demonstrate
outstanding citizenship as evidenced by their involvement in school and community activities. Demonstrate

Special Conditions: Preference will be given to those students who provide a minimum of one and not more than
three testimonial letters, record of marks or other support material substantiating each of the three areas of

Support letters are expected to be very specific to each of the areas of achievement.
The University of Northern British Columbia also agrees to match the $2,500 (tuition waiver) for this award upon

The College of New Caledonia agrees to match the $1000.00 (tuition waiver) for each of these awards upon the

TANJA VOHAR MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
This award was established by family, friends and co-workers to honour the memory of Tanja Vohar. Tanja was
born and raised in Prince George, completing her elementary school years at Pineview Elementary and graduating
from Prince George Secondary School.

This award was established in 2012 by the physicians of the medical staff at the University Hospital of Northern
B.C. to provide financial assistance to a graduating student who plans to pursue post-secondary education in the
medical field.

Eligibility: Open to students who attend Mackenzie Secondary School.
Criteria: Students must be proceeding to further education at a recognized college, university, or
technical/vocational school. This award is based on scholastic achievement. Students must have attended
Mackenzie Secondary School for at least grades 11 and 12 and have a GPA no lower than 3.5, Canadian Citizenship,
as well as proof of acceptance, and registration at a recognized post-secondary institution must be given. This
scholarship must be committed by the upcoming September. An alternate who can meet the criteria may be
substituted in the event that the winner is unable to use this award. In the event of a tie, the scholarship
committee will select the deserving student based on the academic record of the previous two years.
