Our Story
TriColumbia, formerly known as the Columbia Triathlon Association (CTA), was founded in 1983 when a small
group of 90 triathlon enthusiasts signed up to participate in the inaugural Columbia Triathlon in the spring of
1984. Early on, TriColumbia’s Founder, President, Race Director and 6-time Ironman Kona finisher, Robert
Vigorito, had a vision to produce endurance events at the highest possible levels of challenge, safety, and
integrity, and to make lasting and positive contributions to participating athletes, to the sport of triathlon, and
to the community at large. Over the past three decades, TriColumbia has grown to be widely regarded as the
Mid-Atlantic’s premier endurance event production company which provides an array of events for all ability
levels across the triathlon/multisport continuum. More than 150,000 athletes have participated in a TriColumbia
event.
As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, TriColumbia not only makes a difference for participating athletes by
providing superior events and memories to last a lifetime, but also gives back to the community by supporting
many local and regional charities, which provide a full spectrum of support for citizens in need. TriColumbia
donates both in direct contributions as well as by providing fundraising team racing opportunities for charities.
Providing premier endurance events in the Mid-Atlantic
region that promote lifelong health and fitness, while
improving the lives of individuals in need by
supporting local and regional charities.
Letter From the
Board Chairman
Dear Friends and Supporters of TriColumbia,
We had another great year in 2012 and, thanks to the hard work of
our dedicated staff, volunteers and board of directors, 2013 looks to be
even better.
The New Year brought a new chapter to TriColumbia as the legendary
Rudy Gil, Board Chairman
Robert “Vigo” Vigorito has retired from our organization nearly thirty
years after opening our doors and growing our organization in ways that didn’t seem possible. While Vigo will
be missed, we are thrilled to have the right team in place to keep TriColumbia on the path to continued and
significant growth moving forward.
In 2012, thousands of athletes competed in our events, from world class professionals to first time endurance
athletes. The opportunities and experiences that TriColumbia provides these competitors spur our desire for
growth and never-ending improvement. Through these inspiring events, we have raised significant dollars for
many worthwhile charities, and those dollars have positively impacted so many people in need. It is our
charitable giving, and the creation of fundraising platforms at our events, that set us apart.
The 2013 schedule kicked off with the popular Athleta Iron Girl Columbia Half Marathon on April 28 which, after
its inaugural year, was named the “Best Women’s Event in the Mid-Atlantic” by Competitor Magazine.
Following the Athleta Iron Girl Columbia Half Marathon, we will celebrate the 30th running of the Columbia
Triathlon on May 19, in addition to seven other exciting events that have become annual celebrations for our
many loyal triathletes.
Thank you again for your continued support of TriColumbia over the years. We look forward to a bright future,
and continuing the legacy begun 30 years ago.
See you on the course!

Robert Vigorito
“Vigo”
Following the 2012 race season, our founder and friend, Robert
“Vigo” Vigorito, retired after three decades leading TriColumbia.
Vigo, a 6-time Hawaii Ironman finisher, created TriColumbia as
the Columbia Triathlon Association after putting together
the very first Columbia Triathlon in 1984. His vision back then
was to produce endurance events at the highest levels of
challenge, safety and integrity, and through hard work and
dedication, his dream has become a reality.
Robert “Vigo” Vigorito, Founder
Vigo also aspired to make lasting contributions to endurance athletes and the community. Over the last thirty
years, TriColumbia has become one of the leading endurance event production companies in the region, and
has contributed hundreds of thousands of dollars to local charities.
Vigo’s enthusiasm and contributions to the sport have rendered him an icon in the industry. He is a nationwide
trailblazer in the triathlon world. In the early 1980’s he worked on the establishment of a regulatory body for
triathlon, known then as Tri-Fed USA, which was the precursor to USA Triathlon, the sport’s national
sanctioning authority. In addition, in 1993, Vigo co-founded the current USA Triathlon Mid-Atlantic, and still
serves as the Mid-Atlantic Council Chair.
TriColumbia is honored to recognize Vigo at the 30th running of the Columbia Triathlon on May 19, 2013 at
Centennial Park in Columbia, Md.
Thank you Vigo for three decades of hard work and commitment to the sport of triathlon, and for inspiring
thousands of athletes to overcome challenges and reach their goals. We honor your vision, and commit to
continuing your legacy of excellence in multisport event production entwined with giving back to our
community. You are an Ironman!
You have inspired so many people with your incredible spirit.
Your presence will be missed but NEVER forgotten.
– Tracy Maccerola
2012 Events
On Sunday, April 29, 2012, over 2,000 women,
ranging in ages from 8 to 75, competed in the
inaugural Athleta Iron Girl Columbia Half Marathon
and Coed 5K in Downtown Columbia, Md. The
first Iron Girl event of its kind in the Mid-Atlantic,
this inspirational and empowering all women’s event
benefitted the Claudia Mayer Cancer Resource
Center, Howard County General Hospital’s
leading resource to assist those living and coping
with cancer. The event raised more than $25,000
for the center. The inaugural Iron Girl Half Marathon
was named the “2012 Best Women’s Event in the
Mid-Atlantic” in Competitor Magazine’s January
2013 issue.
Of the more than 2,500 half marathon
participants, dozens of women who competed in the
event brought inspiring stories of hope, personal
struggle and determination. One half marathon
participant, 42-year-old BethAnn Telford of Fairfax,
Virginia, was diagnosed with a brain tumor more
than six years ago. BethAnn has dedicated her life to
raising awareness and funding research.
I am honored and delighted that I was
given the opportunity to be a part of
such an amazing inaugural event. I am
grateful to the team at TriColumbia for
their contributions to the sport and to
the community, especially the Claudia
Mayer Cancer Resource Center.
– Joan Benoit Samuelson, Olympic Gold Medalist
2012 Events
The 29th year of the Columbia Triathlon,
TriColumbia’s hallmark event, was held
Sunday, May 20, 2012 at Centennial Park
in Columbia, Md. Nearly 2,300 endurance
athletes, ranging in ages from 14 to 71 and
representing 28 states and 5 countries,
participated in a 1.5K swim, 41K bike and 10K
run for a $30,000 prize purse. The Columbia
Triathlon is one of the most challenging and
longest running triathlons in the U.S., and is
also a 5150 qualifying event.
Shane Lauer, a 19-year-old athlete with
Muscular Dystrophy from Phoenix, Md.,
participated in the triathlon with the help
of Athletes Serving Athletes (ASA), an
organization dedicated to using athletic
activity as a way to improve physical fitness
and self esteem in disabled youth. Shane
is confined to a wheelchair yet he still
competes in many multisport events. He was
the first person with Muscular Dystrophy to
attempt and finish the Columbia Triathlon.
The course is one of the most beautiful, and also one
of the most challenging I have ever experienced. The
TriColumbia staff and volunteers put on a great race
and I am excited to add this event to my resume.

2012 Columbia Triathlon Champion

The Blackwater Duathlon, named the USA Triathlon
Long Course Duathlon National Championship, was
held Sunday, June 3, 2012 at the Blackwater Wildlife
Refuge in Cambridge, Md. The event consisted of a
10K run, 70K bike and second 10K run. More than 280
athletes, ranging in ages from 16 to 75 from 29 states,
competed for a $4,999 prize purse. The duathlon travelled
through portions of the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge,
which covers more than 27,000 acres of woodlands,
tidal marsh, freshwater ponds and managed croplands
in Eastern Maryland, providing refuge to the Bald Eagle
and other endangered species.
I’m still overwhelmed with emotion after yesterday’s race. I was the guy that came in last. The
support I got from so many people was wonderful. People calling out my number and telling me I’m
doing great, hang in there, one guy called me a hero, I got high-fives by many. The race officials
on motorcycles constantly checking up on me made sure I wasn’t all alone out there. I also really
appreciated that the support crew stayed in the heat until I reached them to give me water and to
cheer me on. They were so nice. As I approached the finish line, everyone that was around came
in to greet and congratulate me with hugs and handshakes. It was so moving. I must’ve cried for
about an hour afterwards. Even though I was in last place from the start, I felt like a winner. I just
want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for an experience that will last a lifetime.

2012 Events
On Sunday, June 10, 2012, more than 2,400
endurance athletes including over 30 world-class
professionals, from 37 states and 14 countries,
competed in the EnduraFit Ironman 70.3 EagleMan
at Great Marsh Park in Cambridge, Md.
The largest Ironman 70.3 event in the MidAtlantic and one of the most popular Ironman
70.3 triathlons in the country, the Ironman 70.3
EagleMan is a notoriously demanding and
challenging race. Participants in the 16th annual
event competed to qualify to compete in the
Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii
and the Ironman 70.3 World Championship in
Lake, Las Vegas. Of the 2,400 endurance athletes
competing in the race, many competitors
used the race to overcome their own personal
struggles with awe-inspiring optimism and resolve.
Larry D. Perry, 30, of Northeast, MD, a Marine who
was injured in Iraq in 2006, has been competing in
triathlons since 2010. Perry was thrown from
his HMMWV after it was hit by a roadside bomb.
He has undergone 30 surgeries over two years
and uses triathlons as a way to stay healthy and
control his PTSD symptoms. In addition to the race,
TriColumbia produced and donated a monument to
Dorchester County and the City of Cambridge at the
race venue, Great Marsh Park, honoring the event
and recognizing all of the past winners in the race’s
16 year history.
The Results:
Male 70.3 Champion – Craig Alexander, 39, Australia, 3:44:57
Female 70.3 Champion – Meredith Kessler, 34, San Francisco, CA, 4:12:40
EagleMan is unequivocally the most well-run triathlon
in which I’ve ever participated. From the knowledgeable
and friendly staff and volunteers, to the timely and
informative communications pre-race, all the way to
venue and course management, you will not find a
better race end-to-end. If you are looking for safe,
organized, fun and fast 70.3, this is the one race you
should put on your schedule. Thanks to the TriColumbia
team for the obvious passion and diligence you put
into this race. It is truly appreciated.

On Sunday, June 24, 2012, more than 1,000
athletes, including a dozen physically challenged
athletes, competed in the 3rd annual Celebrating
Heroes Sprint Triathlon in Centennial Park in
Columbia, Md. The Celebrating Heroes Sprint
Triathlon is a unique and inspiring event that
celebrates our heroes, from wounded warriors to
those with physical disabilities. Athletes competed
for a prize purse of $4,999. The beneficiary of the
Celebrating Heroes Triathlon was the MedStar
National Rehabilitation Network, ranked by
physicians as one of the best in the U.S. for
rehabilitation of disabling conditions.
As one of the youngest participants in the 2012
Celebrating Heroes Triathlon, Daniel Romanchuk,
14, from Mount Airy, MD., had one of the most
inspiring stories of the day. Daniel was diagnosed
with Spina Bifida, a congenital disorder that
involves the incomplete development of the spinal
cord. He has been able to maintain an active
lifestyle, however, and has competed in several
endurance events. Although confined to a wheelchair, Romanchuk completed all three legs of the
triathlon on his own.
The Celebrating Heroes Triathlon was my first triathlon
and I’ll always have a fondness for the experience. The
organizers, support staff and sponsors were all incredible!
As intimidating as it was to do a triathlon for the first time,
everyone involved made it memorable and fun. I can’t say
enough about the experience. A true celebration!

2012 Events
On Sunday, July 22, 2012, more than 600
children ranging in ages from 7 to 15, competed
in the 2012 Kidz Triathlon in Columbia, Md,
marking the largest turnout in the event’s
five year history. Part of the Maryland Youth
Triathlon Series, the race provided participants
the opportunity to experience a healthy lifestyle
while boosting self esteem in a dynamic, fun,
and family-friendly environment. Additionally,
the event provided the participants the chance
to raise awareness and funds for the Joanna
M. Nicholay Melanoma Foundation through
personal fundraising.
The TriColumbia Kidz Triathlon is a fun way for
kids to get involved with their community and
promotes safe and healthy lifestyle practices.
Children compete in age appropriate distances
that provide the appropriate level of challenge.
Ages 7-8: 50 yard swim, 2 mile bike, 0.5 mile run
Ages 9-10: 100 yard swim, 2 mile bike, 0.5 mile run
Ages 11-12: 150 yard swim, 4 mile bike, 1 mile run
Ages 13-15: 300 yard swim, 8 mile bike, 1 mile run
My son had a blast at the TriColumbia Kidz Triathlon. It was a
mini version of an adult event with all the bells and whistles –
body marking, timing, goodie bag, race shirt, awards, finishers
medal and post race party filled with healthy snacks. But the
best thing was how it made him feel about himself; confident
and proud of his accomplishment. He was all smiles as he
crossed the finish line, and can’t wait to “tri” again!

On Sunday, August 19, 2012, more than
2,000 women, ranging in ages from 12 to 76,
competed in the 7th annual Athleta Iron Girl
Columbia Triathlon in Centennial Park in
Columbia, Md. As the largest and most
successful Iron Girl triathlon event in the country,
women from 26 different states compete in what
has been named the “Best Women’s Event in the
Mid-Atlantic” by Competitor Magazine. The
inspirational event focuses on empowering women
towards a healthy lifestyle and provides a platform
whereby women can support one another and
celebrate their unique grace as they journey
toward the finish line. Professional athlete,
Michellie Jones, an Australian native and seventime Triathlete Magazine “Triathlete of the Year,”
won the event with a time of 1:24:56.
36-year-old Jessica Henley of Fallston, Md., a
relay race participant, celebrated being cancerfree after a two year battle with AML, a form of
Leukemia. Since 2010, she has been through
two years of chemotherapy, two transplants and
months of in-patient treatment.
The Iron Girl Columbia is one of the best races
around. It’s an all-women’s race, which means
plenty of smiles and inspiring stories. The participants range from professional triathletes, to first
timers, to cancer survivors. The race also has
great swag. From the v-neck race shirts, to the
post-race quinoa, to the glass trophies, there isn’t
a better race than this one.

On Sunday, September 9, 2012, nearly 500 women,
ranging in ages from 14 to 73, competed in the
inaugural Iron Girl Rocky Gap Triathlon at Rocky
Gap State Park in Flintstone, Md. This event was
introduced to give more women the opportunity to
be inspired and empowered by participating in a
triathlon.
Pamela Hein, 31, of Manassas, Va. participated in
the event, and shared her inspiring story with us.
At 23 years old, she was diagnosed with Type 1
diabetes, an auto-immune disorder in which the
body attacks and destroys certain cells in the
pancreas. Two years later, she was diagnosed with
another auto-immune disease called Non-Differential
Connective Tissue Disorder (NDCTD). NDTCD
is a disease where the body begins to attack the
joints and often leads to other disorders such as
Lupus and Rheumatoid Arthritis. Additionally, in
2011, Pamela was in a severe car accident and
suffered a brain injury. After all of these trials and
tribulations, finishing Iron Girl Rocky Gap symbolized
the end of a difficult journey, and her refusal to be a
victim of circumstances.
What I love about Iron Girl events is that they are
so inspiring; everyone is there for one another
and cheering you along the way. Beyond any
other triathlon I have done, I love Iron Girl.

On Saturday, September 29, 2012, more than 600
endurance athletes, ranging in ages from 17 to
70, competed in the 9th annual ChesapeakeMan
Endurance Festival in Cambridge, Md. Participants
in the event travelled from 28 states in the U.S.
and countries such as Australia, Switzerland and
Colombia. There were four main events in the
ChesapeakeMan Endurance Festival, which included
the USAT Mid-Atlantic Ultra Triathlon Championship,
AquaBike, Skipjack 75.2 Triathlon and the Bugeye
Classic Triathlon. This inspirational and empowering
event benefitted The Make-A-Wish Foundation of the
Mid-Atlantic, which has granted the wishes of more
than 7,000 children with life-threatening medical
conditions.
Of the 600 participants, Chris Suter, an Aviation
Machinist, brought with him his own personal story
of struggle and determination that has helped
encourage more people to participate in the event.
Suter was diagnosed with Cushing’s Disease in 2012
and had brain surgery to remove the tumor that had
developed. Chris was able to compete in his first
triathlon just six weeks after surgery.
It was a truly remarkable race in so many ways –
the race course, organization and the volunteers
were outstanding. When I crossed the finish line,
I was overwhelmed with emotion and happiness.
We will be back to TriColumbia events for sure!
– Melanie Lenahan,
2012 ChesapeakeMan Ultra Triathlon Champion
Youth Triathlon Program
Learn2Tri, Maryland’s first public school physical
education youth triathlon program, was conceived
by TriColumbia in 2011 as a way to combat the
rapid rise in obesity and inactivity among youth, both
inside and outside of school. This program enables
kids to experience the benefits of swimming, biking
and running, which are natural, high energy, cross
training activities that keep individuals motivated,
minimize injuries, provide total body fitness and
improve self confidence and self esteem. Triathlon
is a lifelong activity that can be enjoyed by kids and
families who want to lead active lives, stay fit, and
have fun together.
In the Learn 2 Tri program, students participate in
the elements of a triathlon during their regular
physical education classes. The pilot program
in 2011 engaged students from two elementary
schools, two middle schools and two high schools
in Howard County, Md. During the 2012-2013
academic year, more than 4,000 students from 14
schools throughout Howard County, will participate
in the program.
