A welcome to campus
There’s a lot in store when
you get to campus in August
You’ll learn about your new academic experiences
and spend time making meaningful connections with
students, faculty and staff. Some of your time will be
spent getting ready for classes, and we hope that you’ll
also have chances for fun during Orientation.
Here are a few highlights to look forward to:

The Community: What to expect when you arrive
A new entrance to campus well into its construction phase. A downtown beginning to renew historic facades. A new University
bookstore, with a Starbucks café, opening on the courthouse square. These are just a few of the things on the horizon for Greencastle
and DePauw’s campus.
By the time August arrives, the City and the University will be nearly four months into the construction of the new entrance to
DePauw along Anderson Street. A central component of DePauw’s campus master plan, the entrance will center on our signature
building: East College. Thanks to nearly $19 million in funding through the State of Indiana’s Stellar Communities initiative,
downtown Greencastle will also complete a comprehensive restoration of major facades on the courthouse square.
And by opening day, the new DePauw bookstore – located across the street from the courthouse – will be in the final phases of
construction, with a target completion date for the bookstore and Starbucks café in the early fall.
College towns and campuses are known for their history and for their culture, but they’re never still. Something is always moving,
changing, adapting and evolving.

Your classes: Registration
The process of requesting courses for your first semester
is straightforward. During the first week of May, a list
of courses appropriate for first-year students and a list
of first-year seminars were posted on the First-Year
Experience website. Be sure to read course and seminar
descriptions before requesting courses.
Students may officially enter course requests online until
June 20, listing 10-15 regular courses and 10 first-year
seminars of interest to them. The Office of the Registrar
then creates a schedule for you from those requests.

Accessing the Course Request System
To access the course request system, log in using your
e-Services account at http://my.depauw.edu. You will
need the username and password for your DePauw
e-Services account. Course and seminar requests are
processed in a batch after the system closes, not on a
first-come, first-served basis. Students are encouraged to
read the descriptions of courses and first-year seminars.

Laptop Computer Program
DePauw requires all students to have a laptop computer.
As a first-year student, you should plan to purchase a
Program Laptop and our Software and Support Bundle.

Your room: Frequently asked questions
Bed Size and Sheets
The beds in residence hall rooms are 80 inches long and
require extra long sheets. The beds are of standard height.
Twin XL sheets will work well on these beds. Students must
furnish bedding because it is not provided by the University
or Campus Living and Community Development.
Bike Storage
Bike racks are located outside most residence halls. Bikes can
be parked or stored only in the owner’s rooms. Bicycles are
not permitted to be stored in common public areas (hallways,
stairwells, etc).
Fridges and Microwaves
Bringing a fridge or a microwave is entirely up to your
preference. Most students do have a small refrigerator and
microwave in their room. If you are interested in renting a
microfridge unit instead of bringing your own, that option is
available.

The DePauw Program Laptops are listed on our website.
By going through the DePauw Laptop website, you
will actually purchase the computer directly from the
manufacturer, who will ship it directly to the purchasing
student. We ask that students order a computer now so
that it is in their hands before the start of classes.
Lofting
The Software and Support Bundle will be available to
students – once they arrive on campus – for a one-time
fee of $225. The software includes Microsoft Office suite
and Symantec EndPoint Protection. Updates and new
versions are included for free during a student’s career at
DePauw. The support component gives students access
to our laptop repair center and loaner systems, providing
the student has one of our Program Laptops. Complete

The beds in College Street, Hogate, Humbert, and the Lucy
Rowland and Mason double rooms are also loftable. You’ll
need to request a loft kit to loft your bed if you live in one
of these halls. Loft kits are $75, and ladders for beds are also
available by request.

A phone (campus and local calls are free) for use by residents
is located in the common area of each floor. There is no phone
service in individual student rooms.
In most of our buildings, you can loft your bed. The furniture
in Longden and Bishop Roberts halls is loftable – meaning
you can stack your bed on top of your desk, dresser, shelves,
etc, in any combination (there are many different ways to set
up the furniture).

Phone Service
Room Amenities
All rooms have a closet (or wardrobe), bed, desk, chair and
bookshelf for each resident. Rooms also have blinds, cable and
Internet.
Roommate Concerns
Professional staff members in Campus Living and
Community Development value the learning that happens
when you live with another person who is different than
yourself. Our First-Year Resident Assistants (FYRAs) will
work with every first-year student roommate pair or group at
the beginning of the year to set standards and expectations
that will help roommates succeed in sharing a space.
Community Resource Assistants (CRAs) who work with
sophomores, juniors and seniors are also available to assist
their residents. If you are having difficulty communicating
with your roommate about your concerns, your FYRA/
CRA and our Area/Hall Coordinator are trained to help you
negotiate the issues. If the situation is irresolvable, a room
change may be considered.
Shipping Items to Campus
Students can send everything to themselves using their UB
box address. Standard office hours for the mailroom (located
in the Memorial Student Union Building) are Monday –
Friday, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
Substance Free
Substance-free living is a unique environment in which
all residents, upperclass and first-year alike, agree to lead
a substance-free lifestyle in their hall, suite or apartment.
Students in these communities agree to the same lifestyle.
This means that residents refrain from using tobacco,
alcohol or drugs in their living unit. However, “substancefree living” means different things to different people. For
some residents, this entails completely abstaining from the
use of these substances, and for others, it means not using
them in the living unit. Therefore, it is the responsibility of
residents to determine what exactly this means to them (with
the minimum expectation that they will be substance free
in their hall, suite or apartment), and to communicate their
beliefs and standards to other residents while respecting the
choices that other residents may make about the use of such
substances outside of the living unit. FYRAs and CRAs will
work with students in substance-free communities to define
community expectations at the beginning of the year.
Window Size
Windows in most of the residence hall rooms are
approximately 2’ x 3’. You can bring curtains if you wish, but
you will need a tension rod to hang the curtains as we do not
allow students to put holes in the wall to hang curtain rods.
Fill your fridge
Do you hear that grumbling? Are you hungry but don’t
want to spend time or gas money traveling to the grocery
store? Stop, shop and save at the Fill My Fridge Event.
You can purchase your favorite selections, from nutritious
snacks to thirst-quenching beverages.

Welcome to DePauw University, which will be a new home for you in a few short months.
We are excited that you are joining our community of engagement and exploration, research
and debate, performance and service.
Even as we welcome you, we’ll be honest – we are going to challenge you. We will challenge
you with more work, harder work and more interesting work than you’ve had to do before.
New ideas, new approaches, new skills and new acquaintances make the first year a feast of
curiosity. It’s just the start of a journey from guided to independent learning.
While we expect much from you, the faculty and staff at DePauw are here to listen and to
assist you. We have resources and expertise to offer, and an open door to discuss opportunities
or obstacles you encounter.
How well read, how civic-minded, how globally aware, how intellectually dedicated can you

Did you miss our on-campus info sessions?
No problem. Here’s the scoop.
We look forward to having members of the Class of 2016 on campus for one of our OnCampus Information Sessions. We hope you will find the session informative, and it will
help you get very excited for coming to campus in August.
If you are unable to attend a session, that is ok. Much of what students will do can be
accomplished over the phone, online or during New Student Orientation in August. Here
are some items you can take care of now.
Course request assistance: If you have questions about completing your course requests, have
a question about a specific course or would like feedback on your selections, you are welcome
to consult with an academic advisor by phone. Simply call the Registrar’s Office at 765-6584141, and staff will put you in touch with an advisor.
Vehicle registration: If you plan to bring a car to campus, you can register your vehicle
online. Visit the Office of Public Safety at www.depauw.edu/studentlife/campus-safety/
publicsafety/campus-safety-services.
Visit campus at a later date: If you visit campus at another date and would like to tour the
residence hall to which you have been assigned, please contact the Office of Campus Living
and Community Development at 765-658-4500. We offer residence hall tours on Mondays,
Wednesdays, and Fridays from 11 a.m.-noon and 1-2 p.m. If you come to campus at a later
date, also be sure to visit the ID/One Card Office in the lower level of the Memorial Student
Union Building to have your DePauw ID made.
