At a time when most female singer-songwriters perform as alter egos, Eleanor Friedberger is simply, refreshingly herself. And that’s just the way her fans like it. Having spent
the last decade fronting the indie-rock institution The Fiery Furnaces (currently on hiatus)
with her brother Matthew, in 2011 she emerged as a formidable solo artist with Last
Summer, a thoughtfully crafted tale of memory and place couched in the organic pop of her
‘70s idols. Instantly, Friedberger established herself as a modern-day heir to the tradition of
Donovan, Todd Rundgren, Ronnie Lane, and their ilk: warm, nuanced, timeless songs.
No gimmicks necessary.
The title of Friedberger’s sophomore album is Personal Record, and it is, in a sense.
Personal, that is. But not personal in the way of, say, a coming-of-age record, or a diary
about the past, which Last Summer was. Many of the songs seem to be about love, or love
lost, but whether any of the experience is hers or someone else’s, she isn’t saying. “It’s not
as specific a narrative this time,” she says. “There’s a universality to it.” So incisive are the
lyrics, in fact, that Friedberger’s bassist incorrectly assumed that two of the songs were
about him. “I loved that,” she says. “I want him to feel like the songs are about him. I want
you to feel like the songs are about you.”

Female country artists fought hard for equal rights for women in their songs, their careers
and their personal lives. Whilst groundbreaking artists such as Kitty Wells and Patsy Cline
paved the way for female empowerment in the 1950s, it was in the 1960s that artists such
as Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn, Jeannie C Riley and Tammy Wynette first achieved great
commercial success – a moment in time coinciding with the rise of both the women’s
liberation and the civil rights movements.
As well as the slipcase CD edition there is also a limited edition heavyweight double
gatefold vinyl edition complete with full sleeve-notes and super-loud pressing.

While it’s true I did endure a terrible break-up at the beginning of writing this record, this is
not a break up record. Dagger Beach is a put-me-the-fuck-back-together record.
The break up came in late 2011, after endless months of WhiteWilderness touring.I returned home to
an empty house, and, as that’s pretty unbearable when you’re not quite right in the head,
I decided to set out walking. I hiked the Lost Coast (36 miles of off-the-grid splendor in Southern
Humboldt County), I hiked the entire 150-mile trailsystem of Pt.Reyes, I hiked for days, deep, deep
in the woods, usually alone.
As I walked and walked, listening to records on repeat, I started obsessing about music
again. Three Records found their way into my psyche and inspired much of this new record: Joanna
Newsom’s Have One On Me, Silver Jews’ The Natural Bridge, and Radiohead’s King Of Limbs.
I don’t think you’ll find traces of these records in Dagger Beach, but their spirit and fearlessness
deeply affected me.(Hence the shout-out on the record to one of my lifelong heroes, David Berman.)
The first two reminded me how crucial great lyrics can be, how your experience of a record
can evolve and change as you slowly decode complex and thoughtful writing. King Of Limbs showed
me how powerful linear songwriting can be,when subtle changes in form and repeating motifs slowly
shift into something else entirely (just try to follow “Morning Mr.Magpie” on headphones).There
are many songs on Dagger Beach that take this approach:”Damage Control” and “Gaslight” were
both written to drum patterns played by Jason Slota, my long-time partner. Jason played drums
alone,without music, and I adapted to his structures and rhythms. Doing this keeps me from relying
on my usual tricks and structures and forces me into brand new territory.
This strange experience,the endless hiking and backcountry camping off the grid, it completely changed the songwriting processfor me. I edited lyrics while walking,I worked out songs in my
head. It didn’t come easy: the first time I camped alone (I was deep inside the million-acre Mendocino
National Forest) I freaked out, ended my trip early, and wrote “Raw Wood”the next day. By the end of
2012, I could stay out for a week on my own. As the experience changed me, it changed the record.
Dagger Beach is looser, weirder, and more free because of it. - John Vanderslice

Americana singer-songwriter Aoife O’Donovan spent the last 10 years playing in the
celebrated progressive string band, Crooked Still, and has been collaborating with

Aoife’s writing came to the attention of Alison Krauss, when she recorded Aoife’s

Lightning Dust - the duo comprised of Amber Webber and Josh Wells - tends to thrive
in the spirit of change. 2007’s self-titled debut was a hushed, intricate folk affair, while
2009’s Infinite Light found a middle ground between Suicide and Fleetwood Mac era pop.
So when they geared up to make the music that would become Fantasy, the pair was
looking for a new sonic stamp.
Lightning Dust’s 3rd proper full length finds its inspiration in skeletal synth pop, modern
R&B beats, the films of John Carpenter and -- in accordance with Lightning Dust’s only
longstanding rule -- absolute minimalism. The core of Fantasy lies as much in the songwriting as in its sonics, and begins with tools familiar to Webber and Wells: her acoustic guitar
and his Wurlitzer piano. They worked to distill the arrangements to just the few key elements that were necessary to make the feel right, and through countless hours of labor in
The Balloon Factory - their Vancouver studio - the songs found their way to a sonic palette
more squarely electronic than either expected.
Lightning Dust has delivered an album that informs their sound in remarkable new ways.
Fantasy is a hypnotic, exciting record, recklessly new without sacrificing the rich atmosphere that makes Lightning Dust who they are. “Loaded Gun” is a robotic riot grrrl anthem,
while “Agatha” stands tall as an ominous lullaby. “Fire, Flesh and Bone” recalls
the best cinematic new wave ballads, while acoustic heartbreaker “Moon” makes the rest
of the world disappear. And so while Lightning Dust’s destination was never an exact place,
Fantasy is as vivid a place as you’ve ever imagined.
