Fall 2012 - Center for Academic Programs
The Learning Times
Windham 2012 Summer Program
This year the Windham Educational Talent Search Summer program
entered its 5th year. I look back and can’t believe that we have thus far
spent five summers making sure that our rising 7th, 8th and 9th grade
students have the upper hand as they enter into the new school year.
We started our 2012 summer program with two brand new teachers and
one returning teacher and three brand new Tutor Counselors, one of
which is one of our very own Windham Tech ETS Students.
Students were challenged to continue their academics this summer via
the three academic courses that were offered to them, Mathematics,
English, and Computer Science. Along with our classes we were excited
to be introducing several new Social Development activities that
made students confront fears, obstacles, differences, and many other
adversities that they faced day by day. The social development aspect of
the program created an opportunity for the students to gain knowledge
on topics and activities that ranged from Healthy relationships, Drug
Prevention, Girl scouts, Martial Arts, Career Exploration and many
more.
Combined with the rigors of an academic program and a hefty social
development calendar we were able to provide the students with Friday
Field trips. These include a trip to the Manchester ropes course to engage
in various team building activities and several high and low ropes course
elements. They also had the opportunity to visit Trinity College, the State
Capital, Eastern Connecticut State University and Central Connecticut
State University. On our final field trip, the students were able to enjoy a
job well done at Lake Compounce Amusement Park.
We capped off the summer with our annual end of the year summer
potluck and as usual parents/guardians outdid themselves with their
extreme generosity of time and yummy food. We had well over 40
families and friends attend. We continue to hope that our Summer
Learning Program will academically enrich the lives of many more
students to come. It was truly an amazing summer program and we have
to thank all our staff and supporters for making it possible.

The Educational Talent Search (ETS) Program
has provided me with many great memories and
experiences throughout my High School career that
I will always cherish. I met many new friends in
the program, but more importantly, when I needed
help with important college decisions ETS was
there to help me. The exposure to the college tours
especially helped to guide me in my decision of
which college I wanted to attend.
As an ETS student, recent UConn graduate, and
ETS employee, I have realized the great impact this
program has on so many students. I feel fortunate
to have the opportunity to give back to the
program, as it has helped me a great deal over the
years. Working behind the scenes is very different
than being a student. Discovering what the advisors
do to ensure students have the help they need and
are college ready has been an invaluable learning
experience for me.
I want to say thank you to everyone in ETS for
believing in me and for giving me the opportunity
to be a part of this family. This is an experience that
I will never forget.

Senior Trip
As the school year came to an end, ETS organized a
trip to the Shubert Theatre for our seniors. We wanted
to recognize their achievements for accomplishing yet
another milestone in their educational careers, and
plant one last seed before they moved on to the next
phase in their lives. The timing was perfect and we were
fortunate enough to be able to bring them to see the
Off-Broadway, Tony Award Winning–Best Musical, In
the Heights. This was a gripping and inspirational show
about community, family traditions, and chasing your
dreams.
“My favorite trip was when we went to see the play
In the Heights,” said Eimy, one of our seniors. “It was
very interesting and intriguing to watch, and I could
certainly relate to it. It also gave me an opportunity to
see some of my peers in the program and say goodbye
to my program advisor.”
We started the day with a group lunch and ended
it by handing out the ETS Program Certificates of
Completion and taking photographs for keepsakes. It
was a proud moment for the Program Advisors and a
great way to give out students a memorable send off.
To our seniors: We’d love to hear updates on how you’re
doing, so please keep in touch!!

WCHS Student Spotlight
I’m delighted to have the opportunity to shine light on one of my
very deserving graduating seniors, Eimy Quispe. She is one of those
students who constantly reminds me how fulfilling this work is and
highlights the importance of our program. Eimy has been an absolute
pleasure to work with. Although she will be missed at Wilbur Cross
High School, I’m thrilled that she will be attending the University
of Connecticut, Storrs campus this fall. Eimy is such a hard working
student; she is already taking some college classes this summer as she
was also accepted into our UConn SSS (Student Support Services)
program. This program will offer her added support and be a great
resource for her throughout her undergraduate career.
Eimy was so kind as to share a few words with us about her experience
with ETS:
“The ETS program has helped me significantly in my transition
from high school to college,” she said. “The ETS program advisors
were always willing to help me in anything I needed assistance with.
As a high school senior at Wilbur Cross High School, I was very
intimidated about college life and never sure what to expect of it,
especially in the academics. I always felt that I would never be good
enough to make that big step, but they encouraged me to keep going
regardless of anyone else’s opinion.”

WHS Student Spotlight
The Windham ETS student spotlight is Carylian Allende. Carylian
is a 2012 graduate of Windham High School. Carylian, came from
Puerto Rico with her family in 9th grade speaking very little English.
She was submerged into Windham High school and was expected to
succeed. Carylian struggled to break language and cultural barriers
that were not her norm, so that she could be academically successful.
After many trials and tribulations she graduated from Windham
High School with a 3.1 GPA and will attend Eastern Connecticut
State University in the Fall. Carylian is a hardworking, dedicated and
humble student/person. She is so enthusiastically excited to have been
admitted to ECSU via the STEP/Cap Program where she hopes to
major in Administration. Carylian says that “if it wasn’t for ETS she
wouldn’t have known where to start with applying for school” she
also stated that she “wouldn’t have even known about the STEP/Cap
program and all its benefits if it wasn’t for ETS”. The ETS Windham
Staff would like to wish Carylian Allende the best of luck in her future
educational endeavors.
Shaylah McQueen:
New Haven ETS Spotlight Student
ETS would like to salute our New Haven ETS Spotlight student:
Shaylah McQueen. Miss McQueen was Valedictorian at James Hillhouse
High School, graduating with an A average, 4.35 Grade Point Average
and 14 college credits from Gateway Community College and Southern
Connecticut State University. Miss McQueen is the single parent of a
one-year-old angel, Zaccaeus. She credits her success to her faith in God
and her determination to provide a better life for her son. Using her life
story to inspire others, Miss McQueen has delivered many motivational
speeches including being the keynote speaker for the United Way Open
House for Educators and Supporting Single-Parents and Parent Teens
Program (SSPT) and at various middle and high schools in New Haven.
An active leader, trailblazer and philanthropist to her local school and
community, McQueen understands the importance of investing her
time to give back to her community. Her involvement includes diverse
positions and organizations including Class President, a Representative
for her school’s Small Learning Community, President of the National
Spanish Honor Society, member of the National Honor Society, Member
of the Board of Directors for Expansion’s in “New Haven Youth Day
Project”, Member of Executive Board of Directors and Head Youth
Coordinator for Youth Ministry and Outreach Department in “You and
Yours Foundation” of New Haven, Co-Founder of James Hillhouse’s
“Attendance Buddies Program”, and Co-Founder of New Haven’s “Elm
City Dream Team”, and mentoring students in Math, science and
reading.
Miss McQueen is preparing to attend Wilson College, an all-girls college
in Pennsylvania that awarded her with the Wilson College Presidential
Scholarship. There she will be pursuing a double major in Education and
Theology, in preparation for the profession of an English teacher and
Youth Minister. She plans to continue her educational career and pursue
her doctorate degree to ultimately become an English Professor.
She is a recipient of the Gates Millennium Scholarship, which she credits
to Educational Talent Search Program. “I owe much of my success to
the ETS program because if it were not for the Trio Day field trip to
Rhode Island I attended my junior year of high school, I would not have
been aware of that scholarship and know how to fill out the scholarship
application during my senior year of high school,” she said.

which college I wanted to attend.
