Oakbrook School's Vision The Oakbrook School Community will embrace the diversity of our students and collaborate to challenge and encourage students to be 21st century learners with the resources to succeed in work and life. June 2016 Working Together as a Community Wood Dale School District #7 Dear Oakbrook Families, This school year has gone by extremely fast and for the first time in a long time, we did not have to take any snow days! As I reflect on my third year at Oakbrook School, I am proud of the many student, staff, and PTO accomplishments from this year. The children are the reason why we all focus our energy here and it is very rewarding to see them excel in so many areas. The children in first and second grade finished taking the MAP test and overall improved in reading. Students showed growth in math as you will see when you receive your child's individual MAP report. Kindergarten students made growth in the ability to retell a story. Their success can be attributed to excellent parenting and dedicated teachers who provide an environment that encourages all students to reach their highest potential. I know I can speak for our staff in saying that it is a privilege to partner with all of you in the development of our students. I hope everyone has plans to spend quality family time together this summer. Our lives are very busy and finding balance in life is one of the challenges of this journey. I know many families will travel and expose children to historical sites and other adventures that support learning. Research shows if children are not learning and reading over the summer they will lose skills they have attained during the previous school year. Therefore, please take advantage of the summer library program and other academic opportunities that will support student learning. On behalf of the Oakbrook School Staff, I would like to thank everyone for making this school year such a success. I will miss greeting students as they step off the bus and seeing their warm smiles. I will miss waving hi and good-bye to parents as they drop their precious children off in the morning. I will miss playing with the children during recess and seeing their face light up with joy simply because I'm holding a jump rope. I will miss walking down the hallway and seeing the beautiful smiles on the children's faces. I will miss doing announcements every morning wondering who would be doing them with me. It has been my pleasure getting to know the new group of kindergarteners, and we wave a sad good-bye to the second graders. Our first graders now are our new leaders of Oakbrook School. News Over the course of the year I have written many articles for the newsletter on the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle, reasons that it is important to get the recommended amount of exercise and the many different aspects of fitness. Last month I wrote about how as a family it is important to set the positive examples and places and activities you could do as a family to promote a healthy lifestyle. Bellow I have listed the web addresses to three places to find fun outdoor and fitness related activities: Please remember that being healthy for a lifetime is not a sprint, it is a marathon. We need to keep healthy habits not just for the current day but for our entire lifetime. If you help your students create healthy habits now it will be easier for them to keep those habits throughout their lives. Page 3 JUNE 2016 Oakbrook LMC News September, 2015 May, 2016 WOW Words The WOW Words in the LMC have grown to cover an entire wall and turned the corner into the computer lab. In the fall, we started posting WOW words in English, Spanish and Polish. Students learn the word and write sentences using the word. Lucky students have their sentences read on the morning announcements and every student who submits sentences gets a treat from the office. We now have over 14 different WOW words that the students have been exposed to over the course of the year. “Persnickety” seems to be this year’s favorite with the most sentences submitted by students! Thank You, Oakbrook PTO! A BIG THANK YOU to the Oakbrook PTO! Through the funds raised at the Scholastic Book Fairs, the LMC was able to purchase over 85 new books! Students were very excited with many of the popular new titles such as Minecraft, Pete the Cat, Star Wars, Lego and Elephant and Piggie books. The Oakbrook LMC is grateful for the continued support of the PTO. SEM Reading Students Review New LMC Books Oakbrook SEM students created book reviews for many of the LMC’s new titles. These reviews helped generate excitement and encouraged students to check out the new books during library time. Pillars of Character at Oakbrook Monday, June 6th—Last Day of school!
