From Joe Pedersen,

Seguin Services &
John Voit, President &
CEO of Seguin Services
While discrimination has lessened over the
years because of our hard-won battles, society
can be slow to change. For example, Illinois
ranks near the bottom compared to other
states in funding for community services such
as what Seguin provides. The people we serve
don’t appear to be a priority for public support, especially in Illinois. The use of the “R”
word continues unabated in popular culture,
urged on by radio talk-jocks, supposedly
satirical movies, and other media outlets.
Dear Friends of Seguin,
For that reason, we are urging you to help
us continue the battle for civil rights for the
adults and children with disabilities and other
special needs. Seguin actively works to
confront this issue through our Youth
Leadership and Disability Awareness project.
Funded in part by the Comcast Foundation,
this project is a partnership between local
school districts and Seguin to promote
constructive relationships between all classmates, regardless of disabilities. We believe it
is especially important to reach students in
elementary and middle school to have the
greatest impact on the most students.
This project includes an age-appropriate
curriculum which is currently being
implemented in many west suburban
Chicago-area schools.
As you are likely aware, the history of persons with
developmental disabilities in this country is riddled
with notorious stories of severe maltreatment and
discrimination. From the infamous “snake pit” of
the Willowbrook State School in New York exposed
in the 1960s, to the mass institutionalization of
individuals in substandard facilities segregated
from our communities, persons with disabilities
and their advocates have had to fight for their
civil rights. Due to the efforts of organizations
like Seguin and the enactment of civil rights and
public education laws at state and national levels,
many persons with developmental disabilities have
made great strides in improving their quality of
life. Nevertheless, they continue to face significant
societal discrimination. These individuals experience extremely high rates of unemployment as well
as discrimination where they may live. Inclusive
education has been applied on a limited scale and
inconsistently at best in communities throughout
the country. Many persons with developmental
disabilities continue to be housed in large
institutions, denied the chance to live, work,
learn and play within the mainstream of society.
Today’s youth represent America’s future
leaders, employers, co-workers, neighbors, and
friends for people with intellectual disabilities.
Ultimately, we desire to achieve multiple aims
through this initiative, including the creation
of a cadre of youth energized to be advocates
and organizers for people with disabilities with
a more sophisticated and sensitive understanding of the world. You can help Seguin by promoting this project within your schools. You
can also help the Seguin cause by advocating
for fair and equitable funding from the State
of Illinois. With your support and involvement, we can see further gains for the individuals we hold so near and dear to our hearts.
For those of you who are parents or family members of persons with developmental disabilities, you
know what we are saying. We are sure that you have
seen such discrimination directed toward your loved
ones, such as hurtful insults or being made fun of,
or having to skip a public engagement because there
was no “handicapped” seating available.

Charter One
Provides Critical Support
Benefiting Job Training
For Persons With
Disabilities
Seguin Services
is pleased to
announce that
the Charter One Foundation has provided
continued support, since July 2008 totaling
$30,000, for Seguin’s Community Employment Alternatives program. Individuals
with developmental disabilities have desires
to live full lives, including involvement in
fruitful and rewarding work. Charter One
recognizes the value of this commendable
goal and has helped Seguin achieve meaningful results in the lives of the people we serve.
Pictured is Seguin participant Andrew Pittman (pictured left)
among staff and others with Joanne Lara (pictured right)
during this exciting and productive workshop.
In March, Seguin hosted a one-day Autism
Movement Therapy (AMT) workshop for Seguin
staff, representatives of other organizations,
and individuals with developmental disabilities,
conducted by AMT’s creator Joanne Lara, M.A.
“Seguin Services’ Community Employment
Alternatives program serves as a critical
training and support resource to members
of our community who wouldn’t otherwise
receive the guidance necessary to develop
work-skills for employment,” states Stacey
R. Sather, Senior Vice President and Director
of Public Affairs, Charter One. “By partnering with worthy organizations such as Seguin
Services, Charter One is proud to help those
most-in-need in our community.”
Seguin’s CEA Program supports Seguin
Participant Grace Walls (above) who works
at Brookfield Zoo, and Seguin Participant
Steve Cerny (top right) who is employed at
Jewel/Osco in Stickney.
This commitment on the part of Charter
One enables us to assist 185 adults with developmental disabilities by supporting their
employment in regular jobs in the Greater
Chicagoland area, as well as 100 adults in
SEGUINWORKS business initiatives within
the Seguin Auto Center, Seguin Gardens
& Gifts, and Seguin Lawn Care. Our hats
are off to the focused and dedicated efforts
of Charter One—who deserves our deepest
gratitude—for recognizing this need in our
community and partnering to make a difference in the lives of many.

Since then, Seguin staff members have utilized
the methods and practices of Autism Movement
Therapy to conduct weekly classes for Seguin
participants at the Carr Center, as yet another
fitness and enrichment activity.

the individuals we serve, enabling them to
lead fuller lives by raising their quality of
life and helping them reach their potential.
The winners include Lovie Twine, Francine
Harvalis, Gloria Corral, Susanna Abarca,
and Ben Hollins.
In a previous newsletter, we highlighted the
contributions made by Lovie Twine. This
time we showcase the work of Ben Hollins,
Home Support Specialist, for his PersonCentered Support. Ben works a split shift
for Seguin, providing intermittent support
to five men residing in a Seguin home in
Oak Park. Ben’s commitment and patience
have made the dream of living more selfsufficiently a reality for these men. Ben
arrives early in the day to assist the men,
then returns at four in the afternoon to
facilitate evening activities. Ben provides
1ST Prize:
Fully Restored 1965 Ford Mustang
2ND Prize:
Men’s Rolex Explorer II 40mm steel watch
valued at $5,000

expert support, such as ensuring these men
are ready for work, providing assistance
in daily living activities in the home, and
offering sage advice as they strive to be
more independent adults in spite of their
disabilities.
Ben has faithfully worked with these
individuals for the past seven years. As a
result they have developed a strong bond
and trust with Ben. Today they look up
to him as a wonderful role model, as he
demonstrates how they can problem-solve
effectively and improve their skills. Ben’s
flexibility and willingness to adjust his
schedule as required are what makes their
home function so well. In addition, Ben
is always willing to go the extra mile to
assist other direct support professionals.
For example, he helped a shared living
companion when a resident returned home
from the hospital necessitating extra help.
For all these reasons, Ben Hollins truly is a
Shooting Star!

Holiday Joy
to Seguin Participants
Generous Family Hosts Holiday Party for Past 38 Years!
Seguin Participant
Ken Weber’s painting,
Spring Nature, was featured
in The Arc of Illinois Annual
Conference in April 2010.
The Carr Family, Allan,
Jeremy, Terry Sr., Al,
and Terry Jr., graciously
host and celebrate the
holidays annually with
the Seguin participants
and their families.
Richard Smith Jr. and
Richard Smith Sr. take
great pleasure in the
party as well as Maria
Vanik during this much
enjoyed day.
On Saturday, December 5th, Seguin’s
participants flocked to The Wishing Well
Banquet Hall in Cicero for the much-anticipated holiday party. Once again –
for the 38th consecutive year – Al and
Barbara Ann Carr and Terry and Cindy
Carr, with the help of their family and
friends, hosted a holiday celebration,
complete with a banquet meal, provided
in part by Ram Transportation, the Carr
Families, and Fred Yanez of the Wishing
Well. The celebration would not be
complete without a visit from Santa and
Mrs. Claus who were escorted by the
Cicero Fire Department.
Also featured at The Arc of
Illinois conference was Seguin
Participant Jeffrey Difiglio’s
painting Swimming Pool.
Singing, dancing and holiday merriment
resounded through the hall, as 350 individuals filled the Wishing Well. Back again
this year to emcee the event was former
Cicero Town Assessor and long-standing
President of the Community Chest of
Cicero, John Kociolko. On hand to help
celebrate were former Mayor Richard
Scheck of North Riverside and his wife
Judy, who continued their gift-giving
tradition by providing Seguin participants
with wonderful new lunch containers. New
North Riverside Mayor Ken Krochmal and
wife Bonnie also joined the festivities. As
is the tradition, Seguin participants went
home with Christmas stockings filled with
fruit and candy – gifts from B&B Wholesale Distributors – and sweatshirts with
through the generosity of Bill Pacella of
Pacella Trucking Express.
This event is truly a family affair. Al’s
grandsons (Terry’s sons) have assumed
the mantle of coordinating this wonderful
feast. Terry (and wife Kathy), Allan (and
wife Sarah) and Jeremy work diligently
to secure the food and amenities for the
event, while laboring in the kitchen as well
to insure the food is ready to be served to
the masses gathered. Our deep appreciation goes to the Carr Family, who has made
this annual party a time-honored tradition
for Seguin Services and the individuals we
serve. As we count our blessings, your
family tops the list.

Highlights from Fiscal Year 2009
As the innovative leader in providing services and supports to people with
developmental disabilities, Seguin continued to evolve and improve in order to
create outcomes of value and relevance for its participants, families, donors and
the communities in which they live.
Integrate
 218 adults received services during the year in 60 family-like homes scattered
throughout 21 west suburban communities.
 196 children were served over the course of the year in over 100 foster homes,
where Seguin provided safety, security, and individualized care regardless of
their emotional, behavioral, or medical challenges.
 279 cars were sold at the SEGUINWORKS Auto Center with sales revenues of
approximately $280,000; 187 cars were donated in fiscal 2008.
 An average of 82 participants per month gave back to their communities
through volunteer opportunities.
Empower
 40 foster children now reside in permanent, stable homes through adoption,
subsidized guardianship, or have transitioned to family-like adult homes.
 Seguin’s Community Employment programs supported 185 adults during the
year at jobs in their communities.
 Seguin’s Youth Leadership and Disability Awareness Project brought
heightened sensitivity and direct experiences with people with developmental
disabilities for more than 9,600 elementary and middle school students in 18
Chicago-area schools.
 During Staff Recognition month, five employees were given special
recognition for their outstanding contributions to Seguin and its participants.
Enrich
Seguin hosts an annual Seguin Idol each year
 39 children were placed in loving foster homes.
for family and staff. This year, left to right,
 Visible progress continued as part of Seguin’s Carr Center. Work was
completed on the Carr Center’s First Floor, adding seven new classrooms,
a specially designed Portillo’s Learning Kitchen, a computer learning lab,
a Snoezelen sensory stimulation room, and a new nursing center.
Seguin Participants Valerie Flores, Zandara
Henry, Hector Lora, Maria Vanik, Sonia
Bueno, and Mary Cornejo entertain all with
their lively Mexican Folk dance.
 SEGUINWORKS continued to expand to create jobs and enrichment for
people served. Seguin Gardens & Gifts opened in spring 2009, providing
jobs and horticultural therapy opportunities for individuals with significant
disabilities. The Seguin Auto Center and Seguin Lawn Care operations
continued to offer meaningful, productive work for Seguin participants.
 Donors “paid it forward,” donating $2.2 million dollars through grants,
individual gifts, special events, and other donations to support Seguin
programs, as well as the Capital Campaign, “Building a Better Life”.
 Seguin continued to provide arts enrichment and recreation activities, from
music therapy to African drumming, from tai chi to new exercise programs,
from a children’s foster care fashion show to a Seguin Idol contest, including
weekends and weekday evenings, for both adults and children served.
