Use a ¼" seam allowance and stitch with fabric right sides together unless otherwise noted. Press the seams as shown by the arrows. Making the Monster Mania Blocks This is a quick, fun, and easy project using pre-cut squares to make “wonky” log cabin-style blocks. Using pairs of two fabric squares, you will make two blocks that are reversed in color. You will need 16 squares from the Eek Monsters 10Square pack. Remove the sampler stripe and patch print. Group the squares into eight pairs that contrast and look good together. 1. On the cutting mat, layer the first pair of squares with right sides up, edges and corners aligned. With a rotary cutter and ruler, follow the diagrams below to make four random angled cuts as shown. Try to keep the cuts between 1 ½" and 3 ½" wide to allow for trimming blocks to size after sewing. 2. Cut the left side first then the right. Move these pieces well out of the way then make cuts 3 and 4 across the center portion. Cut #1 Cut #2 Cut #3 Cut #4 3. Remove the top center piece and place it nearby. Remove the bottom layer of the four outside pieces and place them in position around the square you removed. You will now have two blocks with contrasting middles and outside pieces. 4. Sew the shorter sides (top and bottom) to the center and press seams away from the center. Sew the longer pieces to the sides. Don’t worry that these pieces stick out and your block isn’t square! Sew the companion block you have laid out. Repeat steps 1-4 for all pairs of squares, varying the angles to make the skewed blocks more interesting. When you have sewn all eight pairs, trim them to measure 8 ½" square. •STUDIO e PROJECTS• Spring 2010 Page 4 of 7 www.studioefabrics.com Sewing Lay out the blocks in four columns as shown. Sew the blocks in each column together, pressing seams of the blocks in each column in opposite directions so that the columns will nest together when sewn. Label the columns 1 to 4 to make assembly easier. Column 1 Column 2 Column 3 Column 4 Piecing the Backing As this is a quilt-as-you-sew project, we will be making the backing next. By using the using the squares from the pillow panel and a coordinating print, your quilt will be reversible and twice as much fun! Cut the squares of the pillow panel print ¼" outside each printed edge. Lay out the pieces in rows as shown, stitch together, and follow the pressing arrows. Sew rows together and press seams in one direction. To aid in centering the batting and top on the backing, baste along the center horizontal and vertical lines with contrasting thread. 20 ¼" 19 ¾" Spring 2010 •STUDIO e PROJECTS• Page 5 of 7 www.studioefabrics.com Sewing Layering for Quilt-As-You-Sew With a well-pressed backing, lay it out with the wrong side up and secure to flat surface. Place batting on top and secure layers together with basting spray. Find and mark the vertical center of the batting and mark with a water-soluble marker. Mark another line ¼" to the right of the center line as a placement line. Draw a line across the batting to mark the horizontal center for placement. Align the center point and marked center lines of backing and batting. Spray baste in place. Horizontal center Vertical center Placement line Sewing the Columns With Column 2 right side up, line up the right edge of the blocks with the vertical placement line. The horizontal seam between blocks 2 and 3 needs to be aligned with the horizontal line drawn on the batting. Pin in place though all three layers —pieced blocks, batting, and backing. Baste column in position. Spring 2010 •STUDIO e PROJECTS• www.studioefabrics.com Page 6 of 7 Sewing Layer Column 3 on top of Column 2 with right sides together, matching intersections, pinning, and then sewing along the right edge of the columns. Tie off the seam by stitching in placing several times at both ends of seam. Open out Column 3 and smooth it onto the batting, pressing the column into place and aligning the center seam of column with the horizontal line on batting. Continue to add Column 4 in the same manner. Add Column 1 by pinning and stitching the left side of column 2. When all four columns are stitched and pressed in place, stitch “in the ditch” horizontally to secure the blocks to the batting and backing. The center should measure approximately 32 ½" x 32 ½". With the two remaining 1 ½" x wof Purple Stripe border strips, sew strips to top and bottom of quilt, trimming to match the width of the quilt center. Your top should measure approximately 34 ½" x 34 ½". Adding the Outer Border Layer, pin, and stitch two 3 ½" x wof Sampler Stripe strips to the right and left sides of the quilt. Trim length to match the length of the center, then sew to sides. Open and press onto batting. Add remaining two 3 ½" x wof Sampler Stripe strips to the top and bottom, trimming to width of quilt top. Open and press onto batting. Baste outer edges of outer border to quilt. Remove basting stitches from backing. Quilt as desired. Trim excess batting and backing. Quilt should measure approximately 40 ½" x 40 ½". Preparing and Attaching Binding After trimming off selvages, sew the five 2 ¼" x wof Green Texture strips into one long continuous length. Press seams open. Fold strip in half lengthwise with wrong sides together and raw edges aligned. Press fold well. Pin and sew the binding to the quilt top, mitering corners as you go. Turn binding to the back of the quilt and stitch in place by hand or machine. © 2010 Studio e Fabrics ®
