cern. Unfortunately, the problem is not in the casinos
themselves; there are many
other ways in which adolescent youth can gamble.
Teens can find themselves
illegally gambling by betting
over any competition or by
the use of online gambling.

STUDENT WORKS
Underage Gambling
By: Lydia Needy
Underage gambling continues to be an unnecessary
risk that some of our youth
participates in. Any person
under the age of 21 cannot
legally gamble in the state of
Missouri. Considering that
Missouri has 14 casinos,
compared to the 113 found in
California, one may think that
this is not an immediate con-
the use of lottery tickets;
which is considered illegal
under the age of 18 in the
state of Missouri. A national
study conducted by the University at Buffalo’s Research
Institute on Addictions, found
that 68% of the adolescents
questioned stated that they
had gambled at least once in
the past year. Furthermore,
11% of the participants surveyed revealed that they
gambled twice a week or
more.
There is no doubt that youths
do gamble for the financial
aspect of it, but that is not the
only reason. Peer pressure
may play a key role, along
with the challenge of gambling and winning. Even if
some teens find themselves
gaining financially from gambling, this does not mean that
they are immune to the risks
that gambling poses.
Underage gambling can lead
to a lifetime of future gambling problems as an adult.
Additionally, debt is a serious
concern; along with the anxiety and depression that it can
cause. Anxiety and depression can take a massive toll
on one’s own health and their
relationships with others.
There is no sense in being in
debt, due to gambling, before
one is even legally of age to
gamble.
As stated before, underage
gambling is an unnecessary
risk. It can easily be avoided.
Although, if an individual becomes caught in this dilemma, then they can seek help
from many different recovery
programs. Responsible gambling, at the right age, is the
best way to prevent the anxiety and depression that could
come from being in debt due
to underage gambling.

Junior High Volleyball
The Junior High Volleyball
team had a fun and exciting
season. The A team record
was 18-3 and the B team was
8-1. The team finished 2nd
place in the Northwest Volleyball Tournament and 1st in
the Kaysinger Conference
Volleyball Tournament. The
girls came together as a team
to learn two new defenses
and new positions. The girls
worked hard this season.
our favorite things to do is
Reflex Math, a computerbased program where students can improve their fluency of basic Math facts. We
have worked really hard to
raise our lexiles by reading
as much as possible. We
even challenge the other third
grade class in reading competitions. We are looking forward to our field trip in the
spring to the Kansas City
Zoo.”
This enabled the Fifth Grade
to travel to the Knob Noster
State Park in October as well.
We also enjoyed the bird
banding demonstration as
well as stations investigating
wild life in forest, grassland,
and aquatic habitats. We are
grateful to the Department of
Conservation for providing
this opportunity.
In November, the Fifth Grade
traveled to the Daum Museum of Contemporary Art.
This enabled us to practice
visual thinking strategies.
We are looking forward to
second semester and getting
ready for sixth grade.

Third Grade
Mrs. Harrison's Third grade
class is enjoying their year.
“We can't believe how fast it
is going! Students are learning a lot of exciting things this
year and are looking forward
to starting multiplication and
division very soon. One of
Fifth Grade has been both
busy and on the go. Deputy
Stephanie Sinclair brought
the D.A.R.E. program to our
school. This ten week program guides students to not
only resist drug use but to
use a model for making good
decisions both now and in the
future.
Graduation from D.A.R.E.
took place in December with
students completing an essay
and receiving a T-Shirt. This
shirt reminds us to use the
good decision making model
we learned.
The Fifth Grade was able to
renew Discover Nature grant.
Sixth Grade Science Class
The first semester was
a little different this
year. Green Ridge 6th
grade received a grant
from the Missouri Department
of Conservation. With this
grant, we were able to purchase equipment to explore
water quality and other water
activities. This included a trip
to Knob Noster State Park.
While at the state park,
GREEN RIDGE TIGER VIBE
Page 7
students met with Dana Ripper, Director of the Missouri
River Bird Observatory. Ms.
Ripper demonstrated how
they catch and band birds.
She also explained how the
data collected was used to
improve habitat and conditions for the fowl of Missouri.
Fishing was another activity
enjoyed at the park. Students were able practice baiting hooks and casting. There
were not many opportunities
to practice removing fish from
the hooks. The fish were
very uncooperative that particular day.
A Stream Team from the
Kansas City area came and
demonstrated water quality
testing and sampling methods. Students learned first
hand why it is important to
keep our waterways clean
not only for us but for wildlife
as well.

HIGHLIGHTS
Science
Anatomy and Physiology
have been working extremely
hard learning what makes up
the body. We have covered
information regarding cells
and tissues as well as all of
the bones and many features
of bones in the body. This
class has had to identify each
and every bone in the body
by its scientific name, and
each of the students has risen to the occasion. We are
now beginning to learn all of
the muscles, which will get us
one step closer to our first
dissection of the year!
We are looking forward to exploring new things second
semester.
~Mrs. Kohues
learn many equations to determine how the world works
around them. We performed
labs to investigate forward
motion, motion in freefall, trajectory motion, and various
aspects that could increase
the total amount of force that
could be applied to a system.
This all culminated in an activity where each student was
tasked with building a Rube
Goldberg machine – a system of simple machines that
creates a chain reaction that
ends with performing a seemingly simple task. Students
were allowed to use any materials or areas of the room to
create their project, and they
came up with a lot of creative
ideas to incorporate the physical rules they have been
learning all semester. The
tasks they performed included displaying simple messages, playing musical chords
and even feeding the class
fish. I am excited to continue
working with these students
as we begin discovering
more about the world around
us!
In my physics class, we have
been learning about the laws
that govern force and motion.
Students were required to
John Olejniczak with his Rube Goldberg Machine.

Business Department
The Green Ridge Business
Department has had a wonderful first semester. The
classes offered were Accounting, Business Management, Business Technology,
Computer Business Applications, Multimedia, Personal
Finance,
and
Yearbook.
Each class has worked diligently through the semester.
Accounting
has
learned many of the
concepts of the accounting equation, as well as
the transactions and rules
involved.
Business
Management
learned
all
about entrepreneurship and the advantages and disadvantages
of starting or buying a business.
They even created
their own business, created
business plans for their business, and made radio podcast commercials.
Business Technology finished up the
Convention Assignment. For this assignment, I
would theoretically head out
on a conference trip. There
were scheduled dates and
times the conference. The
students were given a list of
cities and they had to choose
a city that they think I would
enjoy the most. They had to
GREEN RIDGE TIGER VIBE
collect flight information from
real sources, as well as develop itineraries, budgets,
and summaries. They included maps of real-life locations,
activities that I would enjoy,
hotel accommodations, emergency centers near me, and
even menus for the restaurants I would go to. Overall,
Lydia
Needy,
Spencer
Needy, and Shelby Wheeler
did a great job!
Computer Business
Applications learned
all about the Microsoft Office Suite.
This includes Microsoft Word,
PowerPoint, and Excel. The
students learned how to create mathematical calculations
in Excel, format and align in
Word, and apply animations
and transitions in PowerPoint. All the students enjoyed
developing
their
“Promote a Restaurant” PowerPoint. For this exercise the
students created their own
fake restaurant and advertised it to future employees
and owners.
The Multimedia class
had a blast learning
about the different
aspects of technology. They
learned how to create podcasts in Audacity, an open
source
audio-manipulation
software. They learned how
to develop videos using Adobe Premiere. Their main video project was the “Silent-
Film Project.” All the students
did an excellent job!
Personal
Finance
learned about everything from developing SMART goals, to
saving, investing, budgeting,
picking insurance that suits
them, and how taxes affect
their paycheck. The students
created collages describing
their values, goals, needs,
and wants.
Yearbook has been
hard at it again developing memorable
yearbook spreads.
They are excited to
see what this year’s
yearbook will look
like when it is complete. We
are focusing more on making
our yearbook a publication,
rather than a scrapbook.
Overall, the Business Department is going strong. All the
students are learning more
about the workforce and their
roles and responsibilities in
the workplace.

National Honor Society
During the second quarter of
the school year, NHS participated in a couple different
activities. We teamed up with
FBLA to “Trunk or Treat” and
collected canned goods to

food pantry. FBLA and NHS
also went together to collect
gifts for CASA that the mothers couldn’t afford to buy
themselves for their kids. The
NHS induction was also successful and we inducted
many new members from the
sophomore, junior, and senior classes.

FFA
In FFA this year we have participated in many exciting activities. We started off September with our annual fundraiser, “Fruit sales.” The profit
that our organization received
funded the member’s expenses towards the national
convention in Louisville, Kentucky. Also, in September we
did the “Adopt-A-Highway”
community service project. In

***Attention Students in Grades 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8***
On Monday, March 17, 2014, six students out of 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grades will be attending the
46th ANNUAL CHILDREN’S LITERATURE FESTIVAL in Warrensburg, Missouri. This year the PTO is
again providing funding for 10 additional tickets for the high competition classes, so a total of 40 students
will get to attend this year!! There will be over 40 authors and illustrators from various parts of the United
States on campus that day. We will get to hear 4 authors speak, meet an illustrator, have a chance to
purchase books, and hopefully, get them autographed. It’s a very exciting experience. Just ask some of
the students who have attended in previous years!
October a large portion of the
members attended the Ozark
Farm Fest where they got to
see a variety of animals and
play laser tag afterwards. Later
in the semester, the ninth and
tenth graders received their
Greenhand and Chapter Degree awards. FFA has many
exciting events coming up
such as; FFA week, Barnyard
Day at the fairgrounds, and
contests.

Also in October,
members participated in the
Trick-r-Treat for canned goods
fundraiser. We invited both NHS

We had our “Meal Deals” fundraiser receiving more profit than
we ever have before to pay for
expenses required to attend the
National Fall Leadership Conference (NFLC) in Grapevine, Texas. On the trip, we toured the
Dallas Cowboys stadium as well
as Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey

Meet Miss Mandy
Studies have shown that pets
enrich the classroom experience.
There are many benefits to hav-
ing a classroom pet. Caring for
and interacting with an animal
instills a sense of responsibility
and respect for life. Pets also
increase sensitivity and awareness of the feelings and needs of
others—both animals and humans. When you come visit Mrs.
Silvey’s class on Fridays, you will
not only find a classroom full of
children learning, but a special
dog named Mandy.
Mandy has been attending
schools and homes for the elderly all around for more than six
years. She has touched many
lives, both children and adults.
Mandy’s favorite time of the day
is reading. She absolutely loves
to be read to. Throughout the
years, many children have enjoyed using her as a backrest as
they read to her.
Dogs are often used in the classroom to help calm children and
relieve anxiety. Mandy is a big
supporter of helping children feel
safe and comfortable. So if you
are having a rough week, stop by
Mrs. Silvey’s room and say hello
to Miss Mandy. She will be more
than happy to share a special
moment with you!
