HELP! Are you willing to serve on the Chicken Bar-B-Q Team (we can always
use more Team members), volunteer the day of the event, and/or sell tickets?
The goal is to pre-sell as many of the tickets as possible! Please consider selling
tickets at your place of business, to family and friends or purchasing the tickets
yourself and giving them to your employees, etc. If you volunteer in any way
for the chicken barbecue and/or sell 10 or more dinner tickets, your name will
be entered in a drawing for the 2017 Chamber Directory cover. If you have
already agreed to be a sponsor, your name will be in a separate drawing for the
directory cover.
Funds raised from this years’ bar-b-q will help to sponsor the $4,000 in
scholarships to local students in 2016. See page 7 for volunteer times and
information and for a list of our fantastic Chicken BBQ sponsors!!

What made you decide to purchase a home on Main
Street in Mount Joy and turn it into a vacation home for
rent? The opportunity to purchase 812 W Main St. came as
a total surprise when the For Sale sign was placed in the
yard. After purchasing the property we realized there was a need for a vacation rental property in the Lancaster
County area.
It looks like this was a major renovation. Can you tell us what all was involved? Our purpose was to
reinvent the house and property so that it allowed guests to enjoy a “home away from home”. The renovations
included the addition of three bedrooms, four new bathrooms, a kitchen, a game room and a sitting room. A deck
was added in order for guests to enjoy being outdoors. There was also the addition of a parking lot which can
accommodate six vehicles.
How many people can Nest on the Run accommodate? The house can accommodate 12 guests.
There could be a number of locals that do not have room for their out-of-town family to stay with them.
How would they look into renting Nest on the Run? In order for them to view the accommodations that are
available they should begin by looking at the website, http://nestontherun.com . From there, they will see several
booking options and contact information. It is also available to rent directly through http://airbnb.com and http://
homeaway.com .

Milanof-Schock Library Events
Please make sure to check out The Library’s new
website! It is user-friendly for all devices, is full of great
information, and you can now register online for all
programs! From the web site you can log into your account,
you can renew items online, place a hold on an item, or
pay a fine. Search the Library catalog, take a look at the
monthly calendar, find out about all the Library has to offer the community, and look
into programs for all ages!
The Summer Reading Program is in full swing! This year’s theme is “On Your
Mark...Get Set…Read!” Stop by the Library to pick up reading logs for all ages and
find out how easy it is to earn cool prizes. Help us help your kids lessen the “summer
slide” by getting them to read! Adults…we haven’t forgotten about you! Pick up a TicTac-Toe card at the Library, and turn in completed cards to be eligible for a weekly
prize drawing. Everyone has until August 13 to complete reading logs and game
cards.
The Library has recently added to their collection the Playaway Launchpad for
kids. Each Launchpad comes preloaded with high-quality ad-free learning apps
and allows kids to create their own personal explorer. Some of the devices provide
learning apps that range from English language arts to math and science, while
others provide themed learning apps that include princesses, animals, dinosaurs,
and more! This acquisition is part of the Library’s Skills for School project grant from
the Clarence Schock Foundation. Patrons that check out the device must be 18 years
or older and are required to sign a patron loan agreement. The Launchpads may be
checked out for one week and may be renewed one time if there are not holds on the
device. Up to 2 devices may be checked out per visit, and they must be picked up and
returned at the Milanof-Schock Library.
This year’s Benefit Auction – “A Night at the Movies” – will be held at the
Gathering Place on Friday, August 26 at 5:30p.m. Tickets will be available for
purchase in early July. The $45/ticket cost includes a cocktail reception, a delicious
buffet-style meal which includes dinner & homemade desserts, auctions of the
Chinese, Silent and Live variety, and entertainment provided by Stan Tucker. The
Library is always in need of donated merchandise or services by local businesses or
residents, and ad space is available in the auction brochure; the deadline for both is
Friday, August 12.
The Library will host author Jill Bateman who
discusses her book Flying Forts and Tall Dutch Tulips:
A Year at War, which is the true account of her father’s
WWII experiences as a bomber pilot and POW. This
author visit will be held at the Library on Tuesday, July
19 at 6:30p.m.
Antarctica: A Grand Tour in Nature is July’s
Life-long Learners Program, presented by Barbara and

Health Tip of the Month
from Norma Millard, RN, Certified Health Coach
Habit of an Optimal Lifestyle
Healthy Support Systems: Is Your
Environment Helpful or Harmful?
How important is our environment? Can we
really control it? Consider the following:
The world around us does affect our health.
We don’t have the willpower to overcome all
the early programming and current influences
that lead to poor health. We don’t have to
join an organization in order to improve our
surroundings.
We DO each have the ability to create a
healthier environment by making even a few
small changes. When we become the CEO of
our lifestyles, we take responsibility for our
choices and decisions and reap the rewards of
better health.
In Dr. A’s Habits of Health, Dr Wayne
Andersen talks a lot about things you can do
to improve your environment, like painting
your walls blue, using brighter lights in your
kitchen, switching to different size plates,
and surrounding yourself with people that
support and encourage you to pursue your
health goals. He describes this as your health
bubble. “The more healthy choices you make
about your environment, the more you
can insulate yourself from the challenges
and potential dangers of a world that has
organized itself around Habits of Disease.”
We can take small daily steps that will
become new habits that make up an
improved environment – in our minds
first, then in body, in our homes and in our
relationships with others. As more individuals
do this, the better our surroundings will be.
The steps we each take spread from us to
our families, neighborhoods and eventually
throughout our planet – we decide how
helpful or harmful our vital support systems
will be.

Accountability is Key
Provided by Ashley Zell Fitness,
Independent Team Beachbody Coach
Accountability is defined as
‘the fact or condition of being
accountable; responsibility’.
Statistics prove that those
who work to achieve their
health and fitness goals with
a team find more success than
those who don’t and are most
likely to finish a program and
reach their goals.
I want each person to reach
their goals so that they can
live their healthiest lives and
this is why I offer monthly, 30
day Challenge Groups.
FITNESS + NUTRITION
+ SUPPORT = SUCCESS.
Being part of a Challenge
Group means that we will
have our own, small, private
facebook group for daily accountability and support. With
tips and guidance for meal
planning, meal prep, nutrition
and fitness. Along with some
fun challenges (and maybe
even some prizes)!
For more information or to
take part in one of my monthly Challenge Groups, please

Club of Norlanco-Rheems
Fundraisers
Kiwanis is ordinary people doing extraordinary things to uplift our community
and serve children here and throughout the world. We are a global organization
of volunteers dedicated to improving the world one child and one community at
a time. Every club is committed to doing service that is close to its heart and
crucial to its community.
Kiwanis was founded in 1915 in Detroit, Michigan. The name “Kiwanis” was
adapted from the expression “Nunc Kee-wanis” in the Otchipew (Native American) language, meaning “We make a noise,” or “We have a good time.” The
members believed that the group should “make a noise”—a noticeable difference—through community service. The Kiwanis Club of Norlanco-Rheems was
officially chartered September 27, 1989.
The Kiwanis Club of Norlanco-Rheems (which serves the Donegal School
District) sponsors Builders Club and Key Club in the Donegal School District.
Along with the Key Club, we sponsor and run the Community Safety Day & Bike
Rodeo every June. We also support and sponsor the Early Childhood Literacy
Program, Rotary Park Playground, monthly meals at REYS, the Green Eggs and
Ham Breakfast at Milanof-Schock Library, a float in the Mount Joy Memorial
Day Parade, Ronald McDonald House, local Highway Cleanup, Salvation Army
Bell Ringing at Darrenkamp’s, Main Street Mount Joy’s Winterfest and the Eliminate Project.
In order to support these community events, we hold several fundraisers
each year including a Rose Sale in the fall and Isaac’s dining four times a year.
Our larger fundraisers include a Chicken BBQ; and this year, an all-you-can-eat
Pancake Breakfast.
You have an opportunity to
partner with us for our 21st
Annual Chicken BBQ on July
15 from 10am-1pm at J.B.
Hostetter’s in Mount Joy.
Cost is $9 for a chicken dinner (includes half a chicken,
baked potato, applesauce, roll,
and drink); or $6 for half a
chicken. We will also be holding an All-You-Can-Eat Pancake Breakfast on July 23 from 7 am-10am at
First Presbyterian Church, Mount Joy. The cost is $6 (children ages 5 and
under are free). Includes pancakes, sausage and drinks. So, if you’re coming out
for the Main Street Taste of Mount Joy Car Show, come a little early and enjoy
breakfast!
We would love for you to see what we’re all about. The Kiwanis Club offers
opportunities to meet new people, build a better community and have fun in the
process. Children benefit from the efforts of a dedicated group of caring and
hands-on volunteers. Fellowship and service epitomize our club. We also offer
events for the whole family—so it’s a great way to get your kids involved in volunteering for their community. Please help to support Kiwanis through our fundraisers. And, join us for a meeting the first and third Wednesday of each month at
7:15 a.m. at Simp-lee Seafood, 732 W. Main St., Mount Joy

Take Steps to Prevent Identity Theft
Identity theft is a big problem. How big? Consider
this: In 2015, about 13 million Americans were
victimized, with a total fraud amount of $15 billion,
according to Javelin Strategy & Research. That’s a lot
of victims, and a lot of money. How can you protect
yourself from becoming a statistic?
Here are a few suggestions:
• Secure your Social Security number. Identity
thieves eagerly seek Social Security numbers — so
don’t give out yours to anyone who asks for it. In fact,
as a general rule, be reluctant to give it out at all.
Always ask whomever you’re dealing with if he or she
will accept another form of identification, or at the very
least will take just the last four digits of your number.
And never carry your Social Security card with you.
• Shred credit card offers and bank statements. If
you’re not going to apply for the credit cards offered
to you, shred the offers. Identity thieves have been
known to go through garbage, fill out credit card offers
and take advantage of them. At the same time, shred
your bank and brokerage statements – and any other
statement containing personal or financial information.
• Study your credit card bills and checking account
statements. Question any credit card charge or checking
account activity you don’t recognize as your own.
• Don’t give out your credit card number unless
you’re initiating a purchase. Many of us shop online. As
long as you’re dealing with a reputable merchant who
uses a secure site — i.e., one that has “https” in the
web address — you should be fairly confident that your
credit card information will be protected. Never give out
your credit card number to people or businesses who,
unsolicited, try to sell you something over the phone or
Internet.
• Protect your passwords. Do you use a password
to log onto your computer? If so, don’t share it with
anyone, outside perhaps your most trusted family
members. And use a strong password – one that doesn’t
contain your real name or even a complete word that
could be used to identify you. Also, it doesn’t hurt to
periodically change your password, whether it’s for your
computer logon or for entry to any of your financial or
consumer accounts.
Even after taking these steps, you could still run
into identity theft. That’s why you need to watch for
certain signs, such as the arrival of unexpected credit
cards or account statements, denials of credit for no
clear reason, or calls or letters regarding purchases
you didn’t make. If any of these things happen to you,
you may want to place a “fraud alert” on your credit
reports and review them carefully. Three national
credit-reporting companies – Equifax, Experian and
TransUnion – keep records of your credit history.
If someone has misused your personal or financial
information, contact one of the companies and ask for
an initial fraud alert on your credit report. A fraud alert
is free, but you must provide proof of your identity. And
the company you call must tell the other companies
about your alert. (For more information on placing
a fraud alert, visit the website of any of the three
companies.)
You can help preserve your good name from those
who want to misuse it – so, stay vigilant.
