Mega Support from Sponsor at QB 4somes
A very successful MEGA MITRE
10
sponsored Queen’s Birthday
Mixed
Foursomes tournament last weekend was
again well supported with 32 pairs
competing and players coming from as far
afield as Wairarapa. Pictured above,
stalwart sponsors Steve Deverell and
Brendan Lafferty of MEGA MITRE 10,
congratulate Div 1 winners Chantelle
Cassidy (Tokoroa) and Justin Morris
(Putaruru). At right, our President Kevin
Vagg and vice-president, Mary Hughes
are winners of the Div 2 section.
Kevin Brown and his greens staff are to be
congratulated for presenting the course
and greens at the fastest speed for the
year.
Other results are shown on page 3.

ROUND SIX vs NGARUAWAHIA at NGARUAWAHIA –
Sunday 5th May
ROUND SEVEN vs TIRAU at CAMBRIDGE – Sunday 20th
May
The Division Four team went into the sixth round of
the competition with feverish anticipation that Lee
Kilgour’s new driver was about to deliver the winning
edge that had failed to materialise from the garageful
of new drivers accumulated over the past couple of
seasons. Early in the day some of his tee shots showed
considerable promise (including the reaching of a
260m uphill par four). But the super-dynamic,
multiflex, low impact, handcrafted, torque-free shaft
was only accustomed to the driving range - so when it
fully adjusted itself to his unique playing swing over
more than 9 holes, it quickly became another
collectors’ item.
Fortunately the re-jig of the other foursomes pairing
brought success with morning wins to Andrew Rye
and Glen Smith, and Craig MacDonald and Mike
McCarten.
In the afternoon Andrew, Glen and Craig took a rest
and, with complete confidence, left it to Mike, Lee
and Shane Baillie to secure the team win. Lee looked
evenly matched in all departments, and was forced to
stretch the game out longer than anyone else would
have required. Conversely, Shane played a
magnificent game in the No6 spot. Carrying the
weight of the team on his shoulders in knowing that
his match was crucial to the outcome, from one-down
with four to play he secured a glorious one-up win. It
was a great result from a lad who aspires to become a
top golfer like his brother Nic.
So the 5-4 win against Ngaruawahia on their home
course was a bonus result which catapulted the
COGSWELL SURVEYS sponsored team up to 6th place,
and away from the danger of relegation. The final
round is against Tirau, the current Division Four
leaders. Playing them at Cambridge will provide a
special challenge, and there may well be considerable
bribes offered to secure the six places in the team.
At the tail end of a season of lost opportunities, the
Division Four Pennant Team saved its best for the final
round when they were pitted against the formidable
Tirau team, leaders of the division.
Strategic team selection and positioning may have
been a factor, with Lee Kilgour elevated to the top
foursomes pairing with Andrew Rye in a combination
which was never going to work – although it did see
out 12 holes. But it left a strong base for the other two
pairings to register solid wins - included a great
brotherly effort from the exuberant Baillie boys.
With only three singles wins required in the afternoon
to effect the upset, Lee led the charge to go five up
after six holes, and despite the relentless
encouragement of his supporters was unable to
improve on that until the holes ran out. From three
down early on, Nic Baillie clawed his way back into his
match to win on the 17th. Although Shane Baillie only
dropped a few shots to par he was ground down by a
very steady opponent. Andrew Rye fortunately
recovered from his morning sacrifice to register an
emphatic win on the 15th.
Both Mike McCarten and Craig MacDonald opted to
take their matches the full distance. Craig chipped in
on the 16th, returned to his usual short game on the
17th, then narrowly missed his birdie on the 18th in
halving his match. But the downhill birdie putt that
Mike needed to halve his game on the final hole was
something of a Leo Tolstoy (a difficult read), and the
tight match slipped from his grasp.
The win was a fitting end to a great season for the
team. During the seven round series they survived a
couple of early losses, beat the two top teams, and
finally finished in fifth place just three points away
from the lead.
Many thanks to COGSWELL SURVEYS for their
sponsorship and support, the team members who
remained committed to the task throughout the
season, and those other players who willingly filled in
when required.

TEAM CAPTAIN
Tolich Trophy
by Wally Jones
The Rollo Webb & Associates sponsored Tolich
Trophy campaign has come to an end for the
Cambridge Golf Club for this year with a very narrow
loss 5 ½ to 6 ½ games to Kawhia in the semi finals on
Sunday the 29th May at Whangamata Golf Club.
A certain nameless player (initials VC) who ended up
with the win/loss swing match will no doubt regale his
unfortunate experience of being all square standing
on the 17th tee, shaping a perfect fade for his drive to
the middle of the fairway (within wedge distance of
the green) then see his opponent’s drive heading
almost certainly out of bounds, clip the smallest of
branches on a tree and drop straight down and end up
still in bounds. His opponent then chips out and
makes the green with his 3rd shot leaving him with a
short shot to the green for his 2nd shot and 2 putts for
a sure win. I will leave it to him to tell the rest of the
tale but suffice to say the hole was lost and effectively
the match and so on. This is just one of many tales of
woe experienced by the players this year, but that’s
match play golf!
Stand out player for the team was Ray Skiffington with
special mention of Cam Holmes and Darryl Walker in
the junior division 15 handicap and above, and Larry
Williams demonstrated his match play experience and
commentary skills being the most consistent player in
the seniors division 5 -15 handicap.
One of the match convenors made the comment that
this is the most difficult competition to win in Waikato
Golf due to the fact that every club in Waikato can
field a team and compete, it is a knock-out
competition after the initial round, whilst not all clubs
are capable of fielding teams for the higher division
championship pennants which are also round robin
competitions.
I know that the whole team enjoyed the experience
and perhaps next year we will make it to the Prebble
Cup division and, if not, improve our performance to
the finals next year. The team wishes to again thank
its sponsors, Rollo Webb & Associates, the match
committee and the players in the squad for their
support and commitment.

Ladies
by Karen Payne
We’ve
had
a
few
rainy
Wednesdays this month. However,
our convincing victory for the Daisy
Short Shield against Hamilton on
Monday 20th was a highlight for
May. We had to put it off for a
week due to all the rain, but we
had a lovely day with a good turnout and some very close matches.
I managed to hit a long drive early
on, and the opposition started
calling me the “ape lady”, which I
initially
thought
was
complimentary to my driving.
However, after the fourth or fifth
time of calling me that, long after
my game had gone to pack, my
Cambridge buddy and I started to
wonder if it had anything to do
with my play at all. I think I’d
rather not know.
We had another good day at the
Interclub at Lochiel on the 25th.
Sadly we were pipped at the post
by Lochiel, but came in a
respectable second, ahead of
Morrinsville third. National Teams
day was held on the same day at
Te Awamutu. Although the
Cambridge team played with
plenty of spirit, the Waikato region
was won by Waitomo on countback from Stuart Alexander.
Some more trophy results are in.
Jenny Bowyer has won the
Bellingham Salver with a best two
round net score of 133. The 9 hole
Janet Browne Trophy was won by
Jocelyn Hughes with a best two
round
net
score
of
66.
LGU#3, #4 and #5 winners were
Jeanette Boswell, Pam Nixon,
Jenny Bowyer, Jan McKenzie, Julie
Redgate, Pat Schinkel, Janet
Myers, Lorna Walker and Kathy
Miller. Congratulations to you all.
Nine hole Pennants ladies played
their fifth round in beautiful sunny
weather at Pirongia, beating Te
Awamutu by three holes, and
finishing third in their division for
the day. Finals are at Narrows next
Friday 8th June.
Just a reminder that we have a
Bring and Buy in conjunction with
the Pimms Cup on 6 June. As you
know, we are holding only a few of
these this year so we would love
your full support. A good
opportunity to clean out a few
cupboards and make the most of
all the ripening fruit at this time of
the year.
Many thanks to our sponsors
Export Meats, Caci Clinic, Simply
Divine and the Higginses for their
wonderful support.

Green Scene
By Kevin Brown
Winter conditions are already impacting on the course
with five frosts recorded in May. Colder conditions will
impact dramatically on the ability of the greens to
recover. Therefore I urge members to pay particular
attention to repairing their pitch marks on the greens
over the next four months.
Turf damaged by a pitch mark will recover to a normal
growing pattern within 24 hours if repaired correctly.
First ease the sides of the hole inwards using a long golf
tee or pitch mark repair tool. Lift the centre of the
mark, bringing some grass back into the damaged area
so it can recover.
The incorrect way to repair damage is by simply lifting
the middle of a pitch mark and tapping the surface with
a putter head, resulting in an ugly muddy scar. This
damage takes months to recover and leaves turf open
to disease.
Most players enjoy playing to pin positions in the centre
of the green. We will attempt to keep the pins in these
areas as long as possible, however, excessive pitch mark
damage will eventually force us to shift the pins forward
so damage can recover.

Tuesday Chatter
It was a no show on one Tuesday
due to inclement weather but on
the other four it was fields ranging
from 42 to 51 that enjoyed some
pleasant Autumnal days and a
course in excellent condition –
“Thank you, Kevin & Steve”.
Scores of note came from Pam
Nixon +7, Ian Reed 44 points, Dave
Buchanan 43 points, Bruce Moncur
+6, Ken McKenzie 42 points which
also saw him claiming the $50
Jackpot and Gaye Bezzant and
Marilyn Harrison with 40 points
each. Well done all of you. Not to
be outdone, however, was Audrey
Turner who aced everyone with a
Hole in One on the 13th on the very
successful combined Vets/Ladies
event.
The $2 Ball Pool attracted 39
entrants this month and once
again the course yielded only three
twos which saw Bill McMillan,
Kevin Cubis and myself collecting
13 balls each. I subsequently heard
that Bill generously shared his with
his playing partners – nice gesture,
Bill.
Our Pennants Team lost the battle
to improve their position in the
nine team table finishing 7th
overall. Hard luck guys but revel in
the knowledge that it was an
improvement on last year’s
Tony Stoner comments on Veterans
position.
Before I get on to Senior Moments
I have to share with you the
following exchange that took place
on the 6th green between Gaye
Bezzant and myself:Me, fiddling in my pocket for my
ball marker without much success
said “I can’t find my thing” to
which Gaye replied “You should
get a bigger one”. I still haven’t
worked out what she was talking
about!
Changing to the men, it was a sight
to be seen at a Waikato Veterans
event at Putaruru when Kevin
Turnbull’s normally steady gait
through the green turned into a
gallop of note when he couldn’t
find his tee shot and returned to
play another which then required a
turbo charged effort from Kevin to
re-join his group. Kevin running is a
sight to behold but definitely not
for the faint hearted!
I start this month’s Senior
Moments by welcoming new
member Ed Finlay, recently arrived
from Christchurch, who decided he
would quickly get into the Tuesday
Worth Remembering
I was asked to write about old golfing characters whom
I remembered. IAN PENMAN and LAURIE WATSON
come to mind. They were renowned for their
escapades in and around the 19th and, sure enough, I
was called upon as a lawyer when they were charged
at different times for what was then DIC (now EBA).
Ian escaped conviction but I was never sure whether
that was through my skill or because the Magistrate
recognised him as an old soldier. Both however did
sterling work for the club as captains for three years
each and Ian was also President in 1960/61.

spirit of things and put his hand up
to be one of the starters for the
following week. He then, in true
senior moment style, forgot to turn
up. Never mind, Ed, your
enthusiasm is appreciated. Ron
Samson also deserves a mention
for turning up for Pennants minus
his golf shoes, shooting a best
forgotten nett 81 which included a
two - the reward for which was 15
balls from the ball pool. The saying
“If he fell in the fertiliser he would
come up smelling of roses” was
definitely coined with Ron in mind!
Finally I must, despite threats of
being kneecapped, mention Ann
Thompson who, one day, couldn’t
understand why her nice new
electric trundler wouldn’t trundle.
Intervention by a mere male who
shall be nameless (because I forget
who it was) quickly identified that
the wheels had been put on the
wrong side of the axle! Ann may
have momentarily lost her power
drive but sure as heck her wheels
never came off!
I chip out this month with a bit of
sage advice from Greg Norman –
“When in doubt over club
selection always choose the longer
club”.
by David Jecks
Laurie, I think, got as far as the final of the senior
championship.
In more recent times the everlasting ALAN LUXTON did
terms as Club Captain and President. I was not
required to represent him in court but I still battle with
him on the golf course and snooker table and I can
assure you he is still "on song“. The knowledge of
people like Alan about golf and how to run
tournaments is a source we can continue to tap into
and hopefully will be able to for years to come.

for work on the

other things
Bob, a 70-year-old, extremely wealthy widower, shows up at the Country Club
with a breathtakingly beautiful and very sexy 25-year-old blonde-haired woman
who knocks everyone's socks off with her youthful sex appeal and charm and
who hangs over Bob's arm and listens intently to his every word. His buddies at
the club are all aghast.
At the very first chance, they corner him and ask, 'Bob, how'd you get the trophy
girlfriend?'
Bob replies, 'Girlfriend? She's my wife!'
They are knocked over, but continue to ask. 'So, how'd you persuade her to
marry you?'
'I lied about my age', Bob replies.
'What, did you tell her you were only 50?'
Bob smiles and says, 'No, I told her I was 90.’
