Democracy
theatre
Rapture Theatre in assoc. with Macrobert Art Centre
Following an acclaimed West End run, Michael Frayn’s
award winning play premieres in Scotland. Democracy
combines the precision and fascination of a John Le Carre
(Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy) thriller with the energy and
dynamism of The West Wing. It’s 1969 in West Germany
and charismatic Willy Brandt has been elected Chancellor.
When Brandt “dares more democracy”, his own party
conspires, plots and tries to destroy him. Witty, thought
provoking and entertaining, Democracy is a compelling
and unmissable night at the theatre. Starring a strong cast
of ten actors from stage and screen, including movie actor
Tom Hodgkins (Red 2 and Hanna), Neil Caple (Brookside)
and Colin McCredie (Taggart, River City).

journey with her best friend Peter and his clever dog Patch. Sing along with Grandmother
Babushka Blossom and boo at the wicked Ice Queen as she sends out the wolf pack from
Snow Mountain. Wonder at the mysterious Prince Nikoli; should his eyebrows really join up
like that? He seems very hairy for a prince. Might he be the Big Bad...surely not? From the
creative team that brought you Aladdin (2015) and Cinderella (2014). Written by Murdo Monro.

The Art Room
The Art Room is a UK charity that works with children to increase
self-esteem, self-confidence and independence through art. The
first branch in Scotland opened in Wester Hailes Education Centre
in 2014, providing therapeutic interventions for young people in the
local community. The organisation strongly believes that art can help
children learn and achieve success. This exhibition showcases some
of the artwork created as part of these art as therapy sessions and
demonstrates the power of art to change lives.

Dialogues with Trees - Resident Artist Tansy Lee Moir
Tansy Lee Moir is an Edinburgh based artist with a passion for trees.
Her sensuous works in charcoal and pastel capture the movement
and complexity of trees, seeing them as a solid representation of
time. Tansy spent the early part of 2016 exploring West Lothian’s
‘treescapes’, including Calderwood and Beecraigs. This exhibition
features some of the dramatic tree forms she found there, along with
others from around Scotland and her native Peak District.

The Art Room - CPD for Head Teachers
Running alongside The Art Room exhibition, Jessica Beale will discuss
the inspiration and concepts behind the Art Room charity. Focusing
on methodology and theory contextualised within a typical Art
Room session and what a project looks like, Jessica will explore the
additional attachment figure, the practical application and look at
referrals and endings and how art as therapy differs from art therapy.
She will explore several common questions about the organisation
such as, why does The Art Room work? How is it different from normal art activity? Where
do the Art Room students end up? A question and answer session will close the session.
Friday 30 September, 2 - 3.30pm. Ticket £5
The Art Room – A Practical Art Session for Parents and Carers
Have fun creating your very own lampshade and experimenting

questions where you can find out how to use similar ideas in different
settings. Tutors: Jessica Beale And Katie Rowland.

creative process, which is inspired by them. She
has a particular interest in the ecology and history

Public Art Conference - What’s Up with Public Art?
Join us for an in-depth look at the many facets of public
art engagement practices. From the large spectacle to
hands-on sessional activities, artists work in a range of
different contexts to stimulate and encourage creativity.
The inception and development of many of these projects
are years in the making and this conference highlights
some of the complexities of working with communities
over the longer term. During the conference you
will have a chance to speak to planners, artists, local
authority arts officers and private commissioners to gain
some insight into how public art as a sector functions in
different parts of Scotland today.
The conference would be useful to art professionals in the industry, artists looking to gain
more information about public art open competition processes, new graduates in art,
urban planning or landscape architecture, as well as the general public.
Wednesday 12 October, 9.30am-4pm. Tickets £33 or £30 concession (includes light
refreshments and lunch) booking for this event must be done online at

Artist residency with Tansy Lee Moir
In conjunction with her exhibition Dialogues with Trees,
artist Tansy Lee Moir will explore some of West Lothian’s
woodlands and create newly inspired works.
“Personal encounters with trees form the basis of my work,
with research done literally ‘in the field’, usually during the
winter and early spring when the trees are free from leaves.
Walking, driving, poring over maps, gathering local knowledge,
all contribute to my hunt for those trees with something
particular to say. Once found, I make repeated visits to sketch,
photograph and study, often over many years.”
Tansy will explore four themes connected with her
exhibition. She will look at local trees, particularly those
in designated ancient woodlands such as Calderwood.
She will investigate the responses other artists have to
trees as their main subject matter and the diversity of
those responses. She will also include the social activism
surrounding the development of a ‘Tree Charter’, a
national campaign around collectively caring for the
nation’s trees and finally her personal explorations of trees
in her work, their history, their role in our environment and
their many layers of cultural meaning.
