STEEPED IN HISTORY
The origins of the estate date back to the
Norman Conquest after the Battle of
Hastings in 1066 when English Anglo
Saxon lands were handed to Norman
knights.
The village settlement of Ascherbei is
mentioned in the Doomsday Book and
by the 1200’s William de Ascherbei and
his family ruled the area when the first
baronial hall was created. William de
Ascherbei and many of his later
descendants were directly involved with
the Knights Templar. Ashby Hall was the
centre of William de Ascherbei’s Templar
activities and must have played a
significant part in raising money to fund
the Crusades.
That original Normal Manorial house still
exists within the structure of Ashby Hall.
From the 1400’s onwards, the Kinge
family purchased the estate and
successive generations undertook
continuous development right up until
the 1800’s.
04
The Kinge family during the Georgian
period refurbished the earlier Tudor
house. Over the front door is a
magnificent carved portico dated 1595
which celebrated the final rebuild of the
main house. The Kinge family Coat of
Arms is finely carved in local Ancaster
limestone. This is when Ashby Hall was
awarded Grade 2* Listed as a house of
exceptional merit.
In the late 1700’s the King family began
breeding racehorses and established a
famous bloodline with a number of
notable winners. An extensive stone
stable yard was added to the North side
of Ashby Hall with loose-boxes
surrounding a paved courtyard.
The Ashby Hall Estates were auctioned
off in 1921. All the estate farm lands, three
farms, woodlands and the Hall itself with
surrounding park were sold separately.
Ashby Hall was purchased by Lord
Garvagh (George Caning) who came
from Northern Ireland to settle in
England and began extensive
renovations to modernise the Hall.
JOHN PYE LUXURY PROPERTY
In 1939, the Hall was seconded to the
Royal Air Force at the beginning of
World War 2 as an Officer’s Mess to the
local fighter training base RAF Digby and
from 1940 to 1945 a number of famous
Squadrons used the Hall as their home.
At the end of the War Ashby Hall stood
derelict until 1963 when it was sold to a
local businessman for conversion into a
Country Club and Casino called Lake
Rendezvous Club. A large dance hall was
built onto the East Wing overlooking the
lake with a capacity of over 450 guests.
The Hall was then purchased to become
the headquarters of a defence and
security manufacturing company and
restoration of the property began 2002.
