Scam Alert
A Vergas resident called the sheriff’s office after repeated
phone calls were made to her residence January 8.
The caller told the Vergas resident he was a spokesman for
Readers Digest and told the Vergas woman she had won $2 million. However, he said the woman would need to send an undisclosed amount of money before receiving her prize.
Knowing this was a scam, she hung up the phone. But after
receiving subsequent phone calls, she contacted the country
sheriff’s office.
Lindquist, Sheldon
Charged
A Dalton firefighter, accused of stealing money from victims
in a June crash along I-94 that killed two teenaged brothers from
Moorhead, has changed her plea to guilty days before the trial
was set to begin in late January.
Tara Lindquist, 43,will spend 10 days in jail and one year probation on the misdemeanor theft charge. She was charged with
stealing more than $100 from the Kvalvog brothers at the crash
site.

Jon Chauncey Sheldon, 33, of Dalton was sentenced for a
felony conviction of receiving stolen property. He pled guilty
and received a stay of five years for time to be served at the Minnesota Correctional Facility in St. Cloud. That sentence will be
waived if he remains law abiding. Sheldon agreed to restitution
to the victim totaling $3,257.
He also was ordered to attend classes provided by Alcoholics
Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous. Sheldon will also be on
probation for five years.

Club Meets

The Ashby Community Club met Friday, January 15th for the
regular meeting with President Erin Peterson presiding. There
were eight in attendance.
The club has received a generous donation from an anonymous local business which was much appreciated.
Much of the meeting was dedicated to the upcoming Winter
Extravaganza scheduled for Saturday, January 30th. It is being
planned to coincide with the Coots Unlimited fourth annual
Fishing Tournament on Pelican Lake.
At this time, events planned include sledding down the hill
on the west side of the school. David Kaste has agreed to offer
horse and wagon/sleigh rides too loading at the school. Both
will be from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. The club will pay him $150 for his
services.
There will be hot chocolate at the school site. Heather
Rossum will be at the school and Erin will be at the rink or
school.
There will be a torch cross-country ski event in the evening
near town. Justin Eberhardt will chair this event.
Time to warm up? The legion will host bingo from 2-4;30
p.m. Their kitchen will be open from 12 noon-9 p.m. with their
regular menu offerings. We will check with the City Restaurant
to see if she would like to offer a special for that day.
At this time the skating rink in town has not been flooded, as
the ground is apparently not sufficiently frozen enough to freeze
the rink solid. It will be tested beforehand and will be used if
possible.
In other business: It is hoped to have a event with a meal in
March. The annual meeting will be in April
Next meeting will be Monday, February 15th at 7 p.m. in the
legion.

16, 1954 to Richard and Charlene (Parelskin) Sugamele in
Inglewood, CA.
September 21, 1979 she
married Richard Stauty in
Colorado Springs, CO.
Lindee was an avid reader,
enjoying reading romance
novels best. She was a devoted mother to her three children, Shawn, Melanie and
Allen and four grandchildren,
Kirk (K. C.), Jasmine, Seth,
and Dominic. Her fifth grandchild, Charles was born the
day after she passed away, so
as they passed each other at
the gates of heaven she
undoubtedly gave him his first
kiss. Lindee also did her best
to stay involved in the lives of
the many members of her very
large family in California, Arizona and many other parts of
the country, as well as her
many life long and newer
friends through social media.
She may be gone from daily
lives but she will never be
gone from our hearts.
She was preceded in death
by her mother, Charlene and a
sister, Melissa Sugamele.

husband, Richard; her father,
Richard Sr. of Lake Havasu,
AZ; a brother, Richard Sugamele Jr. of Lake Havasu, AZ;
children, Shawn Jones (Jessica), Melanie (Jerry) Wellnitz,

year ago, when he moved to
LaMoure. He helped his
father with his seal coat business and also worked at Good
Oil. Josh enjoyed hunting,
fishing and spending time
with his family. He was
always happy and had a smile
on his face. Josh loved hard
and lived life to the fullest.
Josh gave the gift of life
through organ and tissue
donation.
He is survived by his soulmate, Korisa Champagne;

Mr. Larce L. Burgh, proprietor of the Grand, has started a
new hotel on Main Street
which he will run for the
accommodation of farmers.
The Kittson House does not
encourage this branch of the
trade and the town is sadly in
need of such accommodations. Mr. Burgh is an enterprising man and we predict a
complete success of his enterprise.
The new excursion sail boat
on Pelican Lake is now in full
running order and open for
engagement at all times. It is
a well built craft and carries
forty yards of sail. On a recent
trial trip she ran close to the
wind and was easily managed.

February 27, 1941
A crowd estimated at about
2,000 attended one of the most
successful meets the Dalton
Ski Club has had in its five
year history. The weather was
not too cold and people
thronged the natural outdoor
amphitheater of the club. The
ski dance the night before, and
the award banquet that night,
Sunday, were also successful
and profitable affairs.
In the Class A division,
consisting of skiers who have
taken first place in a national
tournament or three firsts in
one season, first place was
won by Billy Anderson of
Glenwood who jumped 137
feet.
Class B skiers were those
from 18 to 32 years old and
here Harold Mjolsness of Coleraine, placed first with a leap
of 135 feet.
Class C consisted of skiers
under 18 and was won by
Luke Soler of St. Paul who
leapt 137 feet twice.
Honors in Boys Class D
were won by Bobbie Rude of
Dalton.

A fish seining operation
netted 30,000 lbs. of buffalo
fish from Pelican Lake near
Ashby on January 27. Many
spectators gathered to watch
the professional netters,
Pleshoski and LeClaire, at
work.
Sonar is used to locate the
fish and they are caught in a
net measuring 3500 feet in
length. One pull of the net
produced the 15 ton of fish.
There were some northerns in
the net weighing 10 to 15 lbs.,
and some walleyes in the 10
lb. range. They were immediately released.
The seining operation was
also used on Pomme de Terre
and Ten Mile Lakes.

Long time no see --- or how have you
been? That is a couple of the salutations
we would hear when we meeting someone,
be it a new acquaintance or someone you
haven’t seen for awhile.
Maybe it is just this time of year, but
then, maybe not. At holiday time of year
we usually have more people coming and
going, from Thanksgiving and through
year’s end. People returning home for a
time with family and friends or just to
find their roots locally.
Of late several people have commented
to me so much on this subject that I made
note of it. Our changing world again,
folks. It goes like this: in the absense of the
above named greetings, they are hearing
people commenting on the loss of weight
or ‘you’ve put on some weight, haven’t
you?’. The first comment is easier to take,
especially if you’ve been working out hard
and/or dieting to get slimmer. The latter?
Not so much so. In fact we sort of tend to
grit our teeth to those who feel compelled
to ‘tell it like it is’ or how they see it. We
KNOW when we have put on weight, you
don’t really have to TELL us. We can see
it on the clothes and of course, the image
in the mirror. Then carrying less weight
makes one get about and FEEL better.
What happened to the ‘how are you?’.
It worked pretty good. What happened to
using tact when talking or you may
THINK something, but you certainly
don’t have to voice your opinion.
Through the years I’ve been on both
sides of the fence, putting weight on, losing some, trying to diet. Last year I lost a
considerable amount of weight, but wasn’t trying to. That actually, was the only
good part of a medical problem that has
been corrected. It has been a long haul.
Of course I’ve had many give opinions on
the weight loss, relating I look good and
yes, even that almost gone question, how
are you?
Well, I am doing a lot better, still in
recovery, my team of doctors tell me and I
am certainly grateful for all the well
received comments. Then again, I can see
how using the mouth before you engage
your brain can certainly be irritating.
There is always the gym to join. I’m
planning to very soon, for continuance of
better health.

Ashby Boys Lose Three

vs Browerville —
The Ashby boys basketball team traveled to
Clarissa Monday night, January 11 to take on the
state ranked Browerville-Eagle Valley Tigers.
The Tigers led 42-28 at the half and would win
80-44.
"It is very easy to see why the Tigers are
ranked in state," stated Ashby Head Coach Jeremy Knick. "They play very fast and can hurt you
a lot of different ways. After a couple of early
time outs in the first half my guys responded by
getting stops on the defensive end and knocking
down shots on offense. In the second half the
Tigers really turned it on and we had trouble
keeping the pace, but I was very proud of our
overall effort."
The Arrows were led by Miles Wing with 11
points and 7 rebounds. Christian Norby with 9
points. Nathan Cook with 6 points, 6 rebounds
and 4 assists. Scott Johnson with 6 points and 5
rebounds. Eric Amundson with 4 points. Christian Koefod with 3 points and 5 rebounds. Dakota Ecker with 3 points. Mason Jensen with 2
points, 8 rebounds and 2 assists. The Tigers were
led by Bryce Irsfeld with 23 and Ryan Warwick
with 22. The Arrows shot 17/46 for 37% and 3/4
on free throws.
vs West Central Area —
The Ashby boys basketball team faced off
against the WCA Knights Tuesday night, January
12 in Ashby. The Knights jumped out to a commanding 44-11 first half lead and would go on to
win 67-24.
"The first half did not go well for us, however
Nathan Cook did a fantastic job getting the ball
up the floor against their pressure, " stated Ashby
Head Coach Jeremy Knick. "We all came out
with a lot better energy in the second half, especially on defense. Guys were getting deflections
and getting after the loose balls. Offensively we
took better care of the ball as well."

vs Battle Lake —
The Ashby boys basketball team traveled to
Battle Lake Thursday night, January 14 to take on
Battlers. The Battlers took a 39-15 lead at the half
and would go on to win 66-23.
"We did our best to slow the Battlers down
early, but they eventually took off," stated Ashby
Head Coach Jeremy Knick. "This was our sixth
game in two weeks and I think we ran out of gas.
We have a couple of practices and the weekend,
so hopefully we can regroup and get ready to play
Ortonville tough on Tuesday at home."
The Arrows were led by Miles Wing with 8
points and 8 rebounds. Scott Johnson with 5
points and 3 rebounds. Mason Jensen with 4
points. Nathan Cook with 3 points. Eric Amundson with 2 points and 5 rebounds. Chase Kamrath

vs Hillcrest —
It was a great game to be part of January
12th. These two groups of young ladies left
it all out on the floor.
At the end of the first half, the score was
26-28, the Arrows trailing by two. In the
first two minutes of the second half, the
Arrows were on fire and went up by three
with two quick baskets and some great
defensive stops. After this it was a see saw
battle until right down to the final seconds
in regulation. The Arrows had the ball out
of bounds with under .30 seconds on the
clock and threw a long ball which turned
into a turn over, but with some great
defense again we came up with a big
rebound, got the ball to our eighth grader
Courtney Koefod who drained a three to put
the game into overtime.
In overtime, the Comets made some key
free throws and were able to leave the court
with a win.
The Arrows were led by Kerstyn
Schroeder with 18 points and 7 rebounds.
C. Koefod had 19 points, 5 rebounds and 6
assists. Sami Johansen had a solid game
with 9 points, 3 rebounds and 4 assists. T.
Koefod had 7 rebounds, 3 assists and 6
points. J. Schlosser led the Arrows with 8
boards.
The Arrows were 6/20 on 3s, 23/66 from
the field and 9/18 from the free throw line.
This was a tough loss for the Arrows, but
the Comets defense in the final minutes of
the game was the difference. The Arrows
committed 24 turnovers and several of them
were unforced. The Arrows lost to the
Comets 59-63.
vs Rothsay January 15—
It's always a great night for basketball
when two LEC GBB teams take the floor.
This was a game the Arrows wanted to win,
after the overtime loss on Tuesday and the
Arrows were hungry.
Our post players really took over the
game from the tip-off. Schroeder and
Schlosser were relentless on the defensive
glass and if they weren't grabbing a rebound

Life is all about opportunities. Everywhere we look an
opportunity of some sort presents itself. This past week the
West Central Area-Ashby-Brandon-Evansville wrestling team
had opportunity abound.
This was the first time this
season the Knights had the
chance to defend their rankings
against a top ten team. As it
turned out the Knight grapplers
came up on the short end of the
stick not once but twice as the
#7 Kerkhovan-Murdock-Sunburg Saints and the #13 Pipestone Area Arrows both took
advantage of their own opportunity and knocked off the higher
ranked Knights.
The Knights have amassed
an 18-2 dual record, they won
the Grant County Tournament
and placed third at Big Bear.
These are impressive accolades
but watching the faces on the
wrestlers Friday it was apparent
that an opportunity was missed.
Fortunately opportunity for
redemption is right around the
corner as Friday the Knights
will take on the #12 BelgradeBrooten-Elrosa Jaguars.
Last Tuesday, January 12 the
Knights hosted a home triangular in Evansville. The crowd
clapped and cheered loudly as
the Knights sported the old
Brandon-Evansville wrestling
uniforms and colors. The first
dual of the evening was
between The Border West Buccaneers and the Knights. The
Bucs jumped out to a short lived
lead with a pin to open but the
Knights went on a seven match
winning streak developing a 36-
6 lead before Eric Schwagel
from Border West majored
Mason Nibbe. Sid Kamrath
answered with a pin at 195 lbs.
and the last two weights
received forfeits. The dual
ended with the Knights outscoring the Bucs 54 to 10.
The junior varsity went 7-3
Tuesday with Ian Getz, Chase
Veldhouse, Jarred Lock, Cody
Nadgwick, Aaron Holmes, Deklin Goeden, Jordan Lohse, and
Hunter Mickelsen picking up
victories.
The New York Mills Eagles
squared off with the Knights in
the final dual of Tuesday night.
With the #1 section seed on the
line the Eagles started off strong
with two victories jumping to a
7-0 lead. A landslide of scoring
from the middle of the Knights
lineup quickly overcame the
deficit and extended the point
spread so that even with a
strong finish by the Eagles bigger weights the dual was simply
out of reach. WCA-ABE dispatched New York Mills by a
score of 45-27.
Friday, January 15 the
Knights faced off first with the
#13 Pipestone Area Arrows.
The Arrows jumped out to an
early 7-0 lead dispatching the
first two Knight wrestlers. #4
Jake Nohre earned a pin to close
the gap to 7-6 and the WCAABE grapplers found themselves in an intense see-saw battle in which the favor of the
score changed hands five times.
The Knights split victories with
the Arrows at seven apiece but
the pinning power of the
Arrows separated the final score
in their favor by a margin of 3328.
The second dual was against
the Canby Lancers. The Knights
over powered a young Lancer
squad taking 11 of the 14 available victories. Final score was
54-18.
The final dual of the evening
pitted the #7 KMS Fighting
Saints vs. the #5 Knights. The
dual looked well in hand as the
Knights jumped to a 30-13 lead
following Jake Larkins overtime decision at 160 lbs. but the
Fighting Saints have a devastating finish to their lineup. In fact
the Knights never scored again
as the Saints put up 30 unanswered points winning the dual
42-30.
KMS recognized athletes
that go 3-0 at the duals. Knight
wrestlers achieving this included Jake Nohre, Tyler Onstad,
Keaton Long and Jake Larkin.
Jake Nohre earned the most
pins in the fastest time award.
About the week Coach Gruchow stated, “Going 3-2 in
duals this week was not part of
the plan. However it is reality
and it goes to show how far we
have to go to get where we want
to be at the end of the season.
The clock is ticking.”
The Knights will travel to
Browerville Friday, January
22nd for duals with BBE, Holdingford and Prairie Valley.
Wrestling will kick off at 4 p.m.
Matches will be broadcast on
95.7 KKOK radio.

We hurt ourselves Tuesday with
turnovers and took better care of the ball
tonight. We were patient with the ball
tonight and made better offensive choices.
The Arrows were aggressive on the floor
and willing push themselves to get the win,
they just wanted it more. The Arrows
defeated the Tigers 62-29.
Ashby had three players in double figures and 10 players score. They were led by
Kerstyn Schroeder with another doubledouble, 15 points, 13 rebounds, 3 assists
and 3 steals. J. Schlosser had 10 boards, 7
points, 3 assists and 3 steals. S. Johansen
played another solid game with 10 points, 6
rebounds and 3 assists. M. Krupke has been
really playing well on defense for the
Arrows her quickness and long arms has
given teams fits on defense, she had 9
points and 7 steals. C. Koefod who has been
working hard on her game and doing a
majority of the ball handling for the Arrows
had 12 points, all 3 pointers. T. Johnson
came off the bench and made her mark she
had 1 rebound, 1 assist, a steal,and 2 points.
A. Anderson had 3 boards for the Arrows. It
was great to see my younger players go into
the game and pick up where their mentors
left off.
The Arrows had 40 rebounds, were 19/47
for 40% from the field, 7/16 on 3's for 44%
and 18/30 for the free throw line. The
Arrows still committed 19 turnovers.
The Arrows played the Barnesville Trojans Monday.

First Responders with the Ashby Fire Department received a
pet oxygen mask kit from Invisible Fence of Central Minnesota. These masks allow fire fighters to give oxygen to pets who
are suffering from smoke inhalation when rescued from fires.

Events of 2015 (July-September)
Aastad Lutheran Church was set to celebrate their 100th
Anniversary.
Julie Jordan, tutor with Minnesota
Reading Corps in Ashby received
a Presidential Award for Volunteerism.
Perfectly wonderful weather helped make Ashby Appreciation
Days a huge success. Over 200 participated in the 5K Race and
all other activities were well attended. There were lots of photos
in The Post.
A fun time was had by all at the Dalton Summer Festival with everything from a 5K Run/Walk to a tractor pull to a pork supper and finally
the Connie Lee Concert at the Opera
House.
Thorson Memorial/Scofield Community Building in Elbow
Lake was placed o the National Register of Historic places.
Rob Nelson, who grew up in Ashby, told
of his experiences at Fergus Falls Community College which helped prepare
him for the next steps as a financial planner.
The West Otter Tail County 4-H
team participated in the 4-H Science
of Agriculture Challenge. Team
members were Hanna DeMartelaere,
Brianna Carter, Daniel Ukkelberg
and Elizabeth Bergem.
Tara Lindquist was charged with stealing cash off two teens in
a June fatal crash on I-94.
The Ashby 5-6 grade football program will be raising funds
for the ‘Tackles for Troops” The football players will use the
money raised from pledges to purchase items for care packages
and a letter for troops overseas in not so nice places.
Winners of the Appreciation Day Horseshoe Tournament
were, third place Denise Larson and Jim Hoff; second Don Sem
and Samantha Haugen and first Harlan Balgaard and Joe Hoff.
Ashby’s 17th Annual Red, White and Blue Parade was hosted by Ashby’s Early Childhood program July 2nd.
Galloping Goose Rentals has partnered with T&B’s Short Stop
for rentals to fill the needs of people to explore the lakes country.
The Ashby Diamondbacks won a
championship in the Prairie Rivers
Baseball Association 9-team league.
Twelve West Otter Tail 4-H Youth Leaders attended YELLO
(Youth Exploring Leadership and Learning Out Loud!). They
included Shelby Roehl, Alena Shores, Jenny Christenson,
Brooke Grewe, Mercede Klimp, Karina Walvatne, Sophie Johnson, Hana DeMartelaere, Theo Johnson, Elizabeth Bergem,
Daniel Ukkelberg and Breydin O’Keefe.
The Ashby Toss Ball Team finished
as runners-up in the championship
Tournament in Millerville.
Twenty-six young
athletes took art in
the Ashby Youth
Football team annual football camp.
Ashby Football began their pairing with West Central Area.
Communicating for Agriculture Education Program (CAEP) group was pictured
in The Post at Appreciation Day. Guests
from all around the world were Ashby’s
guests for the day’s festivities.

from LCSC where he has been on
the Board of Directors for five
years.
The Dalton Gophers 4-H Club

14th Annual Lakeland
Hospice Motorcycle Ride
which finished up in
Ashby.
