MISSIONS
APPEAL
STRENGTHENING THE CHURCH AT HOME
The Catholic Home Missions Appeal will take place next week. One
way that this appeal works to strengthen home mission dioceses
in the United States is by funding seminarian formation in poor
dioceses. The blessing of seminarians places a financial burden on
these dioceses, where educating each seminarian costs $35-40K per
year. Your support is needed for these young men so that they might
go back and serve their parishes. Please strengthen the Church at
home by making a generous gift to next week’s appeal..

BLESSED TRINITY SHRINE RETREAT,
Ft. Mitchell, Alabama, is offering
the following retreats:
A One-Day Workshop entitled “Jesus’ Encounter with the
Canaanite Woman” on August 28, 2015. Many of us have
someone with whom we find it difficult to interact. Maybe
it is someone at our workplace, a spouse, a child at home
or at school, etc. We become more distant and reactive as
one person dominates and the other loses. This session will
explore the Non-Violent Communications model where each
person’s needs are understood, valued, and then met. We will
see how the Canaanite woman was healed by Jesus and then
apply the steps to our interactions with a challenging person.
The fee for this workshop which begins at 10:00 a.m. (EST)
(includes the noon meal) and concludes at 3:00 p.m. is $50.00.
A Weekend Retreat entitled Healing our Tired Heart on
August 28-30, 2015. Caregivers, parents, those in helping
professions and anyone overworking often get edgy, sick
and even die prematurely because of “compassion fatigue.”
When tired, we can become long on negativity and short on
compassion because we are giving more than we are receiving.
If you are feeling tired, a bit negative, burdened or wishing you
could change something to get new life, you might be giving
too much. It is past the time to come and rest, receive and
recover life as promised: “Come to me all you who are heavily
burdened and you will find rest for your soul.”
The fee for the retreat which begins with registration 7:00
p.m. (EST) on Friday, August 28, 2015, and concludes with
dinner at noon on Sunday is $180.00.

AUGUST 9, 2015 – NINETEENTH Sunday in Ordinary Time
Saint Paul has an important message for us today as we gather at God’s invitation: “All bitterness, fury, anger, shouting, and
reviling must be removed from you.” While Saint Paul could not have known about our talk radio or daytime television or
even the state of politics in our country today, it is clear that he is onto something. Perhaps our prayer today can be to heed
Paul’s words and strive for more civil dialogue in our country, our city, and even in our church.

Lord, hold our troops in Your loving hands, protect them as
they protect us. We ask this in the name of Jesus, Our Lord and
Savior.
The Sanctuary Lamp
The Sanctuary Lamp burns constantly to proclaim the real
presence of Jesus in the Tabernacle. This week it also reminds
us to pray for students entering or returning to college.

Readings
August 9
1 Kings 19:4-8/Psalm 34/Ephesians 4:30–5:2/John 6:41-51
The first reading given to us on Sundays often gives us a guide
to understanding the Gospel that we will hear proclaimed.
Today’s reading shows us God sending food for Elijah’s journey.
As we listen to Jesus proclaim that he is “the living bread that
came down from heaven,” the first reading helps us to see that
God has sent us Christ as food for our journey, our mission that
we have received from God. For what journey is God giving you
nourishment?
August 16
Proverbs 9:1-6/Psalm 34/Ephesians 5:15-20/John 6:51-58
Father, all the elements of nature obey Your
command. Calm the storms and hurricanes that
threaten us and turn our fear of Your power into
praise of Your goodness. Grant this through our
Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, who lives and reigns
with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and
ever. Amen.
