ELECTION TIME IS NEAR

PRESIDENT, USBF WESTERN SECTOR
Here we are in the beginning of August and there
are only two and a half months left before the Western
Sector meeting in November. For those who aren’t
aware of the importance of this meeting, the President,
Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary positions are
all open. 2014 is the last year for the present board,
which may be a good thing. I think it’s time for some
new people to bring their ideas to the table; ideas that
will help the Western Sector as well as the entire USBF
move forward.
The Sector President is not only the head of the
Western Sector, but is also on the Executive Committee
of the National Board. The importance of this committee
is that they take most of the issues that would come
before the National Board, hash out all the details, get a
consensus of what is good for the USBF as a whole and
makes its recommendations to the National Board so
they can vote on these issues. The position of Western
Sector President has a loud voice on the National Committee because, lets face it, the Western Sector has the
most members in the USBF. Although the Executive
Committee must make recommendations that affect the
entire USBF, the majority of USBF members are members of the Western Sector.
A As most of you may have already heard, Jerry South
will not give up his position of Western Sector Vice
President and go quietly into the night. He has been
elected National President, which makes our representation on the Executive Committee all the more important. The new Western Sector President must weigh
the needs of the entire USBF carefully and not succumb
to the thought that for the first time in a number of years,
the largest sector in the federation will wield a tremendous amount of power. I know Jerry will fulfill his role as
National President with unquestioned accountability. I
know our new sector president will also be equally dedicated to the entire USBF as well as the Western Sector.
As of yet, there hasn’t been anybody coming forward to express his or her desire to be elected to any of
the four open offices. I hear rumors there is a group who
wants to get involved, but it’s just that; rumors. There is
a process that needs to happen to be elected and time
is running out, so if you would like to become involved in
a great organization, let me know as soon as possible.
Why, you can even nominate yourself if you’d like.
If we don't get some nominations for some of the
positions in the near future, I for one won't abandon the
Western Sector. What that means, I'll leave up to your
imagination.

ROSS ON RULES
RAFFA SHOOTING CONTEST

The raffa shooting contest is one of the most fun and
exciting events held at almost every national championship. It is a great event for spectators. The event was not
held at Alpine in 2012 nor at Stockton in 2013. Fortunately, the Italia-America Bocce Club included the event at this
year’s nationals in St. Louis. The event consists of a series of pre-set target balls with each target having a point
value. The object is to hit as many targets as possible to
get a high score. This is a medal event at the nationals
and it was a shame that two recent host clubs were unable
to set up the event.
At the nationals the event
is open to all USBF members in
good standing. The host club
usually charges a ten-dollar entry
fee and the competitors get one
chance to hit ten targets and
show off their shooting skills. A
competitor does not have to be
entered in the regular team or
singles events in order to participate in this event. The contest is
also available to open players
who are not entered in the raffa
competition. It was interesting
this year as the women’s gold
and silver medalists flew in from
New York and California to cheer
on a Western Sector raffa team
and arrived just in time to enter
the event.
Congratulations to
gold medalist Navina Bernardi
and silver medalist Margaret
Shindelus. Sharon Cooper won
the bronze medal. All three women are from the Western Sector.
The men’s division medalists
were Jose Botto, gold; Jack
Grandi, silver; and Natale Scala,
bronze.
The goal of this month’s
article is to explain how to set up
the event so it can be used at
local clubs. It does not have to be something mysterious
that only the gurus at the nationals know how to run. It
can be a great fundraiser and is one of the best ways for
raffa shooters to develop a higher level of skill. Two or
three players can set this up very quickly and rotate their
turns. It works best with a shooter, scorekeeper, and set
up person. Of course, the more the merrier!
There are a total of ten targets on the court. Each
target has a point value as shown on the drawing and the
total score is determined by adding the point values of all
the valid targets that have been hit. There is a maximum
total score of 36 points. In order for a shot to count, the
shooter must first follow the raffa rules and release the ball
from the B line (4 meter line) and the ball must land past
the D line (9 meter line) on the shooter’s end of the court.
When blocking balls are used, as on the B line, the target
must be hit “clean” and the blocking ball must remain in its
marked location.
The target balls are placed on the D line first. The
balls are located one third of the distance between the
center and sidewall or about two feet from the wall. It is
not critical but it should be consistent. The pallino is
placed on the line in the center of the court. Horizontal
and vertical lines are drawn using soapstone or chalk to
mark the center of the target ball. This makes it very easy
to set up the target balls for the next shooter. The shooter
must declare which target will be first and can shoot in any
order such as left to right, pallino, right to left, etc. After
three shots at the D line targets any missed targets are
removed and the C line targets
are set up and so on.
The targets on the B line
have blocking balls in front. It
is advisable to use a different
color for these balls to differentiate from the target ball. A
12-inch carpenter’s speed
square with a 45-degree beveled side can be used to assist
with the setup of the B line
targets. Mark the center of the
target ball by making a cross
as described above.
Then
place the tip of the speed
square on the mark and draw
a line at a 45-degree angle
away from the center of the
target ball. Make sure to keep
the speed square parallel to
the B line. Set the target ball
and then place a ball as a
spacer on the line to create
the gap. The blocking ball is
then placed against the spacer
and its position can now be
marked. The ball used to produce the gap can now be removed. The space between
the blocking ball and the target ball should equal the diameter of the balls being used or 107mm.
Scorekeeping is very easy. A photocopy of the layout above can be used or a stand-alone score sheet can
be created. Each target that is hit with a valid shot can be
circled. After the last shot at the pallino near the backboard, just add up the point value of the circled targets.
This shooting contest process will provide an enjoyable way to practice raffa shooting and maybe prepare for
the next big contest at the nationals! Instead of bragging,
“I shot 80% yesterday in practice” a player can say, “I shot
a 29 yesterday in practice. I only missed two targets!”

TO THE BOCCE NATIONALS
I tried to get ahold of some people who might
supply me with photos of the 2014 Nationals, held in St.
Louis, Missouri this past June. I wanted to make a timely report in last months’ newsletter. Nobody returned
my emails last month and they didn’t respond to recent
emails I sent. I’m not necessarily predisposed to bragging, but every time I email anyone in the Western Sector, they respond. Well, I finally got some photos and
results; not from St. Louis, but from the USBF website.
I won’t print anyone’s photos or articles without
their written permission, so I went to the top to ask permission to print some of the website’s photos; USBF
President Danny Passaglia himself. Not only did Danny
give me permission, but he also wrote a nice article for
us. Thanks, Danny.
back in 2004. I thought they would make a great article,
so I put them in a safe place and asked one of my bocce buddies to write an article about it. He said he will. I
won’t say who it is because he flaked out on me and
ended up not writing the article (hint; he’s that guy
standing there holding the electric cord while Giovanni
Napoli stirs the material). It’s okay, though. That particular bocce buddy has come through for me many times
with photos of our tournaments and winning teams.
Well… he came through for me after all. My bocce buddy Ron Jacobs sent me a batch of photos showing the resurfacing of the IAC courts last month. He
even provided captions for the photos. Thanks Ron!
GET A ROOM!!
I DON’T KNOW WHAT TO SAY
After almost three years of editing this newsletter,
several months ago I finally decided to add captions to
the photos. I figured those who don’t know who’s in
them might like to know. Every once in a while, though,
I don’t know who the people are myself; or I know some
but not all in the case of group photos. I found myself in
a quandary as far as the Nationals photos go. I don’t
know most of the people in the photos. Rather than
bang my head against the wall asking others who might
know and not receive any responses to my inquiries
(I’ve been down that road before, quite recently, thank
you), I decided to go back to the same old used to be;
no captions. At least as far as the Nationals go. But
there is a complete list of winners on page 14.
DÉJÀ VU ALL OVER AGAIN
About a year ago, Richard Heisler sent me a
whole slew of neat photos of the surfacing of the courts
at the Italian Athletic Club in Stockton, California way

EAST PORTAL FUNDRAISER
The fundraiser tournament at East Portal in Sacramento on July 12 was a pretty good success. It
helped chip away at the huge cost of sending Bella
Bocce to China for the International Bocce Championships this coming October. Sizable donations from both
the USBF Western Sector and the Italian Athletic Club
Ladies Auxiliary helped put a bigger dent in the costs.
To help even more, the Italian Athletic Club donated the use of their facilities to have a shrimp dinner
on October 11th starting at 7:00 (doors open at 6:00).
Sounds like a real good time.
This is fortuitous for those of you playing in the
Marin Bocce Federation’s Four Player Open on that
same day. What better way to celebrate your win or
soothe the pain of loss than to treat yourself to this
great dinner. And don’t tell me the hour and a half drive
from San Rafael to Stockton is too much after playing
bocce all day! I’m the guy who travels that far or more
every time I play in a tournament.

The National Championships were held June 16
to 23, 2012 at the Alpine Country Club in Round
Lake, Illinois. Watching the goings-on are, from
left, Deanna Contreras, Diana Pellegrini and
Shirley Croce. They, along with Teresa Rae,
came in 4th Place in the Women’s Punto Raffa
Volo Championships.
Club Paesano in Gresham, Oregon has some great
courts at Cedarville Park, but during the Winter and
early Spring, bad weather forces them indoors to their
two court venue, distinguished by a roof support pole
in one of their courts.

New Court Surfaces At
Italian Athletic Club of Stockton, California
The Colleoni Sports Facility Company of Gorgonzola, Italy came to Northern California during the Summer months
to resurface the courts of several bocce venues in our area, including the IAC Stockton courts. They did a wonderful
job. Thank you to Danielle Colleoni, his workers and Colleoni/Bocce Facility liaison Mario Veltri for their hard work.

found on each court.
Out with the old. The top of the old surfaces had to be
sanded down.
Removal of areas they thought might cause problems in
pouring the new surface.
The first layer of the new synthetic material. After drying,
this surface was also sanded, then more layers of material.
Before pouring the surface layers, holes were drilled along
the side walls to help anchor the surface.
After a final layer of grit and paint striping, the courts are
resurfaced and ready for play.

Special Olympic Bocce

The newly formed Umpqua Valley Bocce Club recently got involved in Oregon’s Special Olympic
Summer Bocce games, which started in 2007. Special Olympians from Douglas County practiced on
our Club’s courts and members helped set up
courts on astro turf for weekly practices. I became
one of the competing athletes in the unified division where one Special Olympian is paired up with
a non-Special Olympian. I quickly found out that
our Special Olympians have the same passion for
bocce as our club members, can really play some
great bocce, and love to compete!
Our teams competed in both the Regional and
State Bocce Tournaments held in Medford and
Newberg in June and July. Astro turf courts measured 12x60 feet bordered by 3 inch white tape.
Games were played to 12 points or timed to 30
minutes, whichever came first. Offical sized bocce
balls were used under an open rule format.
So it was on to States from Roseburg in a big yellow school bus with Special Olympians competing
in bocce and golf, family members, coaches, and
chaperones. I’ve never seen such enthusiasm and
an awesome sunset as we pulled into the Double
Tree in Beaverton. The next morning was a sight
to see as we entered the Austin Sports Complex.
There were 118 bocce teams representing 17 counties, ready to do battle on 25 brand new astro turf
courts over the next two days. It sure did get my
heart pumpin’, not to mention a few butterflies in
my stomach!
I was really impressed with the level of bocce,
sportsmanship, compassion, kindness, and organization exhibited at the State Special Olympic Bocce Games. Thanks to Jill Fummerton, Douglas
County’s Special Olympic volunteer coordinator, a
woman with 2 hearts! It was an honor to have participated in such a great event.
Eight 2 person teams from Douglas County made it
through the Regionals and went on to compete in
the State Special Olympic Bocce competition. Fortunately, my partner Trevor Parker and I were one
of the eight. It was so cool to see that big smile
on Trevor’s face when we were told we were going
to States.
Trevor and I (#1 pictured above), won the gold
medal and the good sportsmanship award. Pure
joy was on his face as he sang and danced afterwards. That is really what the Special Olympics
are all about. Trevor and I qualified to go to the
World’s SO Bocce games in Los Angeles in 2015.
I’d love to see him sing and dance again. I would
urge all our local USBF clubs to get involved in
Special Olympics Bocce. It’s a whole lot of fun
hanging out with our Special Olympians and rewarding to all in the end.

Local Women’s Bocce Team Wins United States Championship
Local resident, Jo Ann Jacobs from Stockton, was on the team Bella Bocce who won the
National Women’s Bocce Team Championships held in Round Lake, Illinois in 2012 against
all women’s teams from other states and were previously scheduled to represent the United
States in Brazil in October of 2013 at the International World Tournament. However, due to
economic strife Brazil cancelled the tournament. China has acquired the right to have to
International World Bocce Tournament in Kaihua City, Zhejiang China in October of 2014
and the team is invited to represent the United States against all other countries. The team
is comprised of: Jo Ann Jacobs (Stockton), Laura de la Rosa (Elk Grove), Lydia Romo
(Antioch) and Colleen Randazzo (Martinez). Their coach is Manny Romo (Antioch). The
Team practices and plays out of the Italian Athletic Club in Stockton.
The world game of Bocce is named Punto Raffa Volo. It differs from the normal backyard
type of bocce which you see in the USA as it has much more skill and strategy and
Competition The game has a stringent set of rules and a referee who will enforce the rules
marking the position of all played balls and making sure all players and coaches are following the rules.
Getting to China isn’t going to be cheap. There will be a special fundraiser Shrimp Dinner at
the Italian Athletic Club in Stockton, 3541 Cherryland Avenue for $30 per person which will
have all the trimmings included. Everyone is invited to come on Saturday, October 12. (209)
957-1223. The Italian Athletic Club has donated use of the club for this fundraiser.
The Western Sector of the United States Bocce Federation is donating $1,000. The team
has set a goal of $10,000 to help fund the cost of plane tickets to China. Any donations can

We Left Our “Arch” In Old St. Louis

The week of June 22nd though June 28th bocce players converged on "The Hill" of St. Louis, Missouri. Known as "The Hill" because of the large
presence of Italian Americans and the many restaurants, bakeries and home of the Volpi salami and
sausage company. Birth place of such greats as Joe
Garagiola and Yogi Berra, this community prides
itself on maintaining its Italian Heritage and the
pride and joy of the area is the Italia America Bocce
Club. For the entire week, players and guests were
able to play bocce on state of the art courts, socialize at the bar, compete against players from several
states and enjoy the company of some of the nicest
people in the world, the St. Louis Club members.
The IAC of St. Louis is no stranger in hosting the
USBF Nationals, having done so several times and
each time gets better.
One of the highlights of the week occurred on
the very first day, Sunday, June 22nd. With the exception of two teams from the Special Olympics, all
the participants were age 21 OR UNDER!! Many of
the players were from area High Schools that
played in a league throughout the winter at the Club.
The USBF thanks Robert Della Croce, Tony Sanna,
Rich Robertson and Tom Drago and the rest of their
team for all their efforts in creating this league,
which I understand is going to expand to 14 High
Schools entered for the 2014-15 season. Great job
guys!!! It was truly a joy watching all these young
players concentrate and show off some real good
bocce skills. The Opening Ceremony was rather
emotional and brought several observers to tears
seeing all these young players, boys and girls, anxiously awaiting for the tournament to start. This was
the FIRST time in the History of the USBF that an
UNDER 21 OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP has EVER
been held.
As a Special Guest, Pat McGauley, was invited to roll out the ceremonial first ball. Pat was a star
soccer player at Indiana University and member of
the 2 time NCAA Division I Championship Teams
scoring the winning goal in the Final Game both
years!! He continued his career as a professional
player with the Chicago Fire until he retired and
joined the Anheuser-Busch team and currently is
Vice President of the New Products Division. Pat
was born and raised in St. Louis and his alma mater
high school was represented at the tournament. A
special thank you to Pat for taking time out from his
busy schedule to attend and speak to the youngsters.
Several new "wrinkles" were introduced by
the host club including a Women's Doubles Championship and a totally new format for qualifying teams
for the quarter and semi finals.
In addition to the tournament itself, the USBF
held the annual Board of Directors meeting and a
new slate of Officers was elected with their term beginning January 1, 2015. The new Officers are:
Jerry South, President; Lio Giannotti, Vice President; Colleen Randazzo, Secretary and Julie Belfi,
Treasurer. I personally want to wish them the very
best and thank them for stepping forward and wanting to move the USBF forward and hopefully continue to grow. I am sure everyone who was able to attend this years Championship had a great time and
built some friendships that will hopefully last a long
time.
Next year the Nationals will be held for the
FIRST time in the Eastern Sector at the Methuen
Sons of Italy Club just outside of Boston, Massachusetts. The Club is very excited having been awarded
the right to Host and they are looking forward to a
great event and promise to make everyone feel at
home. They are going to entice everyone with a
good old fashioned "clam bake"!! Hope to see many
of you next year!

Most of us who play a lot of bocce are well aware
of the tournaments played almost on a weekly basis at
one venue or another. The USBF has a tournament
schedule covering most weekends of the year while the
various non-USBF clubs and federations have their own
schedule of tournaments. But there are tournaments that
happen on occasion, hosted by small groups that aren’t
really a bocce club per se. I refer to these as “under the
radar” tournaments; tournaments that don’t get the wordof-mouth and club newsletter advertising that organized
bocce club tournaments get. Nor do they get the widespread advertising that USBF member club tournaments
get through this newsletter. But they are great tournaments none the less, played with the same enthusiasm
and competitive spirit we see in the larger tournaments.
The Sons of Italy Monterey Lodge has a unique
story. Up until 2012, they had a bocce club with a series
of tournaments throughout the year. But even with as
many tournaments as they had, they were mostly confined, voluntarily so, to a small group of local teams who
regularly entered them. They didn’t seek the wide-spread
notice that most bocce clubs do. Now, the bocce club of
the Monterey Lodge is pretty much defunct, but they still
have one annual tournament that they’ve had since 2010;
The Joe Cerchi Memorial Bocce Tournament.
Joe Cerchi was a Captain for the City of Monterey
Fire Department and a long time bocce player and member of the Sons of Italy. When he passed away in March,
2009, they decided to honor his memory with a tournament. Although it is a good reason for the Cerchi Family
to gather for an Annual Family Reunion, the tournament
is entered by enough local bocce players, along with a
few out-of-town players to make up a pretty good sized
tournament that this year attracted twelve teams.
This year’s edition was held at the Vinnie Occhiuto
Bocce Courts at the San Carlos Church in Monterey.

July 12th was the playing of the fifth annual
Northwest shootout between The States of Oregon and Washington. This is a Ryder Cup style
tournament that pits players in singles, doubles
and 4 person team competitions. One point is
awarded for each victory. At the end of the day,
the team that accumulates the most points wins
the trophy.
Washington won the first year this tournament was played and tied the 2nd year holding the
trophy but Oregon has won the last three times
this tournament has been played. Going into to
this year’s match, Oregon was the slight favorite
to hold the trophy but both States were without
the services of some very good and key players.
The tournament started out with 18 singles
matches. This saw a few upsets from both sides
and when it was finished, everything was tied 9-9.
During the doubles portion of the tournament, Oregon started to flex a little muscle, winning 6 matches to three. The 4 person team competition saw all but one of the matches go down to
the end but Oregon ended up winning 4 of the 5
matches for a 19 to 13 win and a 3-2 series lead.
It’s always fun playing this tournament win
or lose. Over the past ten to fifteen years Oregon
and Washington players have supported each
other’s tournaments and have developed a lot of
great friendships. It’s no surprise when you see a
tournament played in the Northwest where teams
are comprised of players from both States.
As sponsor, Christina Price always throws out the first

10th Annual Aldo Rossi Cup

Sunday July 13th was the 10th annual Aldo Rossi Cup Bocce Tournament
at the home of the Paesano Bocce Club, Cedarville Park. 12 teams from Oregon and California clashed for the $400.00 first place prize.
Just the day before, those same teams competed in beautiful 97 degree
weather representing their State in the Northwest Shootout. The weatherman
had predicted more of the same heat for this tournament day but the players
very rarely saw the sun. Almost all day there was a light drizzle with frequent
thunder and lightning. During the championship game the monsoons hit but the
games played on. As typical Northwestern bocce players, they just broke out
their umbrellas. The courts slowed down to a crawl but held up pretty good.
Playing in the championship game was Woodlawn Park of Seattle and
Skinny Ghinnys of the Paesano Bocce Club. Skinny Ghinnys used their home
court advantage and won a hard fought battle.
In the third place game it was Si Puo Fare from the Paesanos and Bello
Regazzo also from the paesanos trying to one up each other. Si Puo Fare
came out on top for 3rd place.

Saturday, July 19th. An unusual occurrence
took place at this tournament in that four brothers were playing. And not only did they have to
play against each other, but in the end, the older

The policy of the Western Sector Newsletter is that we will gladly list non-USBF sanctioned tournaments on our Upcoming Tournaments section and display applications for those tournaments
hosted by non-USBF member clubs as long as the date of those non-member tournaments do
not conflict with a date on which a USBF sanctioned tournament will be held.
Even if a non-USBF member club tournament is not promoted in our Upcoming Tournaments
section due to this conflict, we will gladly post photos of those tournaments in the next issue of
this newsletter immediately following the month in which the tournament took place.
If you wish to have your tournament represented in this newsletter, please make every effort to
