No Mean Feat
BY VERN COOPER
PRESIDENT, USBF WESTERN SECTOR
All it took was to open this newsletter to see that our
California Girls swept the Women’s Raffa competition at
the Nationals at the Alpine Country Club this month. No
mean feat, but we’re not surprised. The Western Sector
boasts some of the worlds best bocce players, women and
men alike. The next stop for some of these women are the
North American competitions, and four of them already
earned a spot at the World Championships.
A lot of us have played with JoAnn Jacobs, Colleen
Randazzo, Lydia Romo and Laura de la Rosa on various
team incarnations; and we’ve had some success doing so,
but when they get together as Bella Bocce, there’s no stopping them. In winning the Gold Medal at Alpine, they assured themselves the honor of representing the United
States not only at the North American Championships, but
at the World Championships as well.
Team Campo di Bocce took the Silver Medal. Margaret Shindelus, Jean Godin, Andrea Ross and Navina Bernardi will represent the United States at the North American Championships at a date and place not yet named. In
addition to the Raffa competition, Campo di Bocce captured fourth place in the Open competition.
Coming in Bronze and Fourth are two teams we’ve
seen in these pages often enough, but there is a difference
this time. We’re not talking about local competition, but the
Nationals. Although they won’t be continuing on to the
North American or World competitions, their winning places
in the Nationals showed they are definitely teams to be
reckoned with. We’re talking about eight women with national cred.
Left Coast Bocce won the Bronze Medal with team
members Maria Narayan, Teresa Wagstaff, Susan Flynn
and Rena Harel. They also won the Silver Medal in the
Open competition. All of these women have seen National
competition success before, and it’s a matter of fact they
will see it again. I’ll bet we see gold in their future.
Although it garnered no medal or ribbon, Finezza
came in Fourth Place. A well known team in the Western
Sector, and now a well known team on the national level
thanks to their play at Alpine, Shirley Croce, Deanna Contreras, Diana Pelligrini and Teresa Rae took the anchor
spot in taking the top four places in the Nationals. We will
be seeing these girls named as medal winners in national
competitions in the future. That’s almost guaranteed.
Sixteen Western Sector women took the Nationals
by storm. Twelve of them brought back medals for themselves while four of them did the sector proud. With this
comes a goodly chunk of pride we can all share in by their
successes. And as proud as we are of them all, I can’t say
I’m all that surprised. A medal sweep by any sector is no
mean feat, but if it was to happen, our girls were the ones
to do it. Congratulations, girls!

NEVADA COUNTY BOCCE TOURNAMENT
SATURDAY, JUNE 2, 2012
By Stephen De Sena
What a fun event this turned out to be!
All the teams were ready to Bocce. The courts were in great
shape, and any hint of inclement weather was soon dispersed by the beautiful Foothill sunshine. It was a perfect
late spring day in the wonderful setting of Western Gateway
Park, the jewel of Penn Valley, California. Fittingly, the six
pristine courts were donated by the Nevada County Italian
Cultural Foundation to a park whose land, in turn, had been
donated by a family so that just these types of fun events
could take place.
It was truly a multi-generational event as there were
children, parents, and grandparents in the tradition of Italian
family fun. There was great music, wonderful
Italian food, superb Italian wine and, of course, Bocce. The
competition was tough, but the teams that dropped behind
came back with a determination to win. One team overcame
a ten-point deficit to win. Everyone enjoyed the companionship of the other people who were there to have fun and relax and, of course, to win the coveted first-place trophy.
Everyone who came promised to return with friends.
That makes for a perfect tournament. See you in the Tuscany of Nevada County, Penn Valley, California at our next
tournament. There is more than gold in them thar hills. There
is BOCCE.

The Italian Benevolent Society of Sutter Creek
After 115 Years, Bocce Comes To The Italian Benevolent Society Annual Picnic
By Rick Wagstaff
I always wondered why there wasn’t any bocce at
the Italian Picnic Society Park in Sutter Creek, so I made
an appointment with then President Vic Mondani and Vice
President, Jim Vinciguerra and met with them at the Italian
Picnic grounds in the spring of 1996.
Vic Mondani told me that the club was established in
1881, and was going to be 115 years old in June and the
reason they never had bocce was that 150 members could
never make up their mind about it! I told him, I was a Fire
Captain from the City of Sacramento and was use to making decisions in a split second. I asked if I could bring a
portable bocce court to the picnic for the three days and
teach Bocce to all those that were interested and they both
thought it would be great!
I asked Wayne Guillen, who was one of my fire
fighters, and also grew up in Jackson to help me. Wayne
and I left the firehouse at 8 a.m. after being relieved by the
“C shift”, and we went to Rocco Battaglia’s Ristorante in
Antioch and borrowed his portable bocce court, which consisted of side boards and heavy carpet.
Wayne and I set up the 12 ft. x 80 ft. portable bocce
court along the clubhouse east side with a 250 watt bulb in
the eaves on each end for night play as the picnic and carnival ran until midnight on Friday and Saturday.
The next day, which was Saturday, the “A shift & C
shift” from my firehouse showed up along with my friend
and mentor Tony Peretti from East Portal Bocce Club in
Sacramento, and we started “Bocce 4 A Buck”! It was an
instant hit and magnet for kids and teens. My wife Teresa
helped teach and draw everyone in to play the game of
bocce.
We played until 2:30 a.m. on a warm summer night
with those two 250 watt light bulbs, a full moon and the
carnival lights and ferris wheel lights, and yet no one wanted to quit.
The Italian Benevolent Society witnessed all this
and decided to build 2 bocce courts at the end of the barn.
Jack Faustino the new 1997 IBS President spear headed
this project and built a third court in 1998. I was asked to
join the club in the fall of 1998 and the rest is history!

One section of the park had quite an array of carnival rides.
Food booths were interspersed throughout the park.
Last October we went to the Gold Country Classic Bocce Tournament in Sutter Creek. It was a pretty good little
bit of traveling from Monterey, but we had such a good time that when Tournament Director Rick Wagstaff told us to
come back for the Italian Benevolent Society Picnic and Bocce Tournament this June 3rd, we knew we’d be there
again. Although the tournament itself was on Sunday, we drove up a day early to take advantage of the “Bocce 4 a
Buck” they had going on during Saturday so we could practice a little.
When we arrived at the Italian Picnic Grounds, we saw they had a regular fair going, with food booths, craft
booths and carnival rides for the kid in all of us. There also was a stage with live music. After wandering around awhile,
eating calamari and a corn dog, my son Frankie and I ended up at the courts, where there were a number of people
playing bocce. By the quality of their play, it was plain to see that a lot of them were playing bocce for the first time. My
first thought was that this “bocce 4 a buck” deal is a pretty good way to introduce new players to the sport. Let’s hope
those first-timers were bitten by the bug.
After a little wait, Frankie and I were on an empty court trying to get the lay of the court. Shortly after starting, I
heard a familiar voice calling out my name from somewhere off the courts. It was Carlo Pappalardo, who jumped onto
the court, shook our hands, and told us, in a way only Carlo can, that he was going to teach us how to shoot. This was
a good thing to happen.
Back in January, my wife and I went to a Raffa tournament in Stockton. It was my first exposure to the game;
very interesting and intriguing. It was confusing to watch without knowing raffa rules, but Jerry South kindly walked me
thought a game when he was on a bye. It didn’t take me long to decide that this was the game I want to play; and
shooting and voloing was a big part of it. When Carlo told us he would teach us to shoot, both Frankie and I were more
than happy to let him do it.
So Carlo gave us shooting lessons for about an hour. He had the patience of Job, When he got a cell phone call
from Jimmy Collins during the lessons, I couldn’t understand a lot of what Carlo was telling him, but I distinctly understood the word “mistakes” several times. This didn’t deter either me or Frankie. We kept shooting until it felt like our
arms were about to fall off. We are determined to learn an important part of the game, but I will tell you right now that
all you raffa players don’t have to worry about any new competition anytime soon, but we’ll be there. We will be there…
someday.
Live music was provided by the Don Garibaldi group.
Don is a Past President of IAC in Stockton.
It was a great weekend for the large crowd to eat, ride carnival rides, play
Bingo, learn bocce, or just relax in the shade.

Northwest Senior Games
Bocce Tournament
Saturday, June 9, 2012 - Auburn, Washington
By Greg Singleton
The inaugural Northwest Senior Games bocce tournament took place on Saturday, June 9, 2012, under
mostly cloudy skies and around 60 degrees. After heavy
rain Thursday & Friday, there were doubts as to whether
any play would be possible. But late Friday the rain
ceased and the 4 courts at Les Grove Park in Auburn on
Saturday morning were very playable, nice & firm, and
stayed that way all day.
………………………………...
The event was divided into 4 categories: 1) Ladies 2) Age 50-59 3) Age 60-68 4) Age 69+. With
the number of participants, amount of games needed for
each group (everyone played at least 5 games), and with
4 available courts we played all games to 9 points.
The Maestro, as I call him (AKA Peter Di Turi) had
his work cut out figuring out the eventual medal winners.
The Ladies division was really close, with all 3 medal winners having the same win-loss records. It came down to
the points-scored tie-breaker and 4 points made the difference between Gold Medalist Cheri Martin, Silver Medalist Patty Acero and bronze Medalist Kristy Anderson.
A similar close finish occurred in the 69+ category
where the field was whittled down to 4 players with the
same win-loss record. The Head to Head tie-breaker came
into play to determine the Gold Medalist Salvatore
Cascone, Silver Medalist Cheri Martin (the same Cheri who
was the gold medalist in the ladies category) and Bronze
Medalist Mario Russo. The 50-59 group's clear winner with
a perfect 5-0 record is Gold Medalist Brad Cotton, Silver
Medalist Bob Sheffels and Bronze Medalist Chuck
Just. The 60-68 group saw another perfect 5-0 record for
the Gold Medalist Robert Glaze, Silver Medalist Greg Singleton and Bronze Medalist Mark Reed.
A big thanks to the Northwest Senior Games
(Ginny & Marilyn), Humana (Lori & Eric, who stopped by
and had a lot of nice freebies that everyone really liked),
Auburn Parks for providing not only the facility but tables,
chairs and tents and Sal Cascone who knew all the in's
and out's of Auburn Parks and was very valuable in supplying equipment, his expertise in setting up and taking
down. Special thanks to the Maestro for
his exceptional organizational skills in seeing that the days
event ran smoothly, which it did without a hitch. Our
thanks go out to all those who stepped in to referee
games and also helped out with the set up and take
down. It was greatly appreciated.
If you have any suggestions to improve the 2013
Northwest Senior Games, please email me, Greg Singleton
with your ideas at: [email protected].

Home Court of the Month
This month’s home court of the month belongs to Chuck Just and Mary Eklund of Bainbridge Island, Washington. Chuck is a member of the Woodland Park Bocce Club of Seattle.
When they demolished their house in 2008 and built a new house in 2009, Mary suggested after the existing
shuffleboard court was taken out, that it be replaced with a bocce court. Chuck agreed that this was a great idea.
The court is about 20 feet from Puget Sound with a view of Mt. Rainier. Due to the overall width of the property
of 70 feet, the court is 64 X 10 feet. The surface is Boccemon’s Rain Country Blend primarily a crushed oyster shell/
oyster flour mixture. The sides are poured concrete with 1 X 6 cedar boards contersunk and bolted into the concrete.
It is a beautiful place to play on all the nice sunny days that Seattle is famous for.

Campo di Bocce of Livermore
Chairpersons Benjamin Musolf and Larry Cereghino
This year, Campo di Bocce
of Livermore will be playing host to
the inaugural United States Bocce
Federation, Western Sector, West
Coast Bocce Club Championship.
This is the pioneering year, and we
are very excited to put this concept
in motion. The purpose of the event is to bring back the
fire in the belly and represent your Bocce club with pride.
We will Allow ANY number of teams from your respective clubs. The way your club choses your teams is
completely at your clubs discretion. There will also be two
divisions of play. Open A and Open B. In order to qualify
in the B division, NONE of your players can have won a
medal in the USBF National Championships in ANY
event.
We choose the Labor Day Holiday weekend because it is a long weekend and there are
currently no conflicting tournaments scheduled.
Registration for the event will take place on Friday, August 31, 2012 from 3 - 6 p.m. with a welcome reception at 6:00 p.m. Play will begin on
Saturday, September 1, 2012 at 8 a.m. Play will
continue on Sunday, September 2 at 8:00 a.m. and will
go all day. The format of play will be Round Robin. Point
differential will be the tie-breaker to determine advancement out of groups/divisions. The top TWO teams from
each division will advance to the playoffs. The playoffs
and finals will take place on Monday, September 3, 2012,
with the awards ceremony taking place immediately after
the championship game.
Matching uniforms, both top and bottom will be required for all participants.
Open National Rules of the United States Bocce
Federation will be the official rules of the tournament:
BACK BOARD LIVE.
The cost per team is $200. This will include a commemorative t-shirt for all team members, a continental
breakfast on Saturday, Sunday and Monday along with
the welcome reception. The registration deadline for all
clubs is August 10, 2012. The application for this tournament can be found on page 29 in this newsletter.
The co-chairs for this event are myself, Benjamin
Musolf and Larry Cereghino, who is representing the
Northwest, out of the Portland Oregon area.
The United States Bocce Federation, Western Sector, West Coast Bocce Club Championship is open to all
Bocce clubs in the states of Arizona, Nevada, Idaho,
Washington, Oregon and California. This event is being
hosted by Campo di Bocce of Livermore, a USBF Bocce
Club. We encourage all participants to be members of the
USBF, but this is not a requirement for this event.
The main objective is to bring some camaraderie
and club pride back into the sport and game of
Bocce.
I am truly looking forward to this pioneering
tournament. With the amount of Bocce enthusiasts and clubs on the West Coast, this event has
the potential of becoming one of the biggest Bocce tournaments in the world.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to
contact either myself or Larry. We are here to assist you
in any way possible! We look forward to seeing you in
September.
Have a great Bocce season!
Sincerely,
“Bocce Bum” Ben Musolf
