OFA Soccer Outlook: Boys Prepare To Defend
Title; Girls Look To Contend In Central, Class B
By DAVE SHEA
OGDENSBURG - The OFA Boys Soccer team will host
the official kickoff of the 2013 Northern Conference fall
sports seasons by hosting the Gerry Cring Memorial Tournament on Friday and Saturday. The Devils will meet Norwood-Norfolk in the second game of Friday’s first round
after Lisbon and Gouverneur square off at 6 p.m.
Coach Matt Morley’s team will be looking to pick up
where it left off last season as the Blue Devils downed
NAC Central Co-Champion Potsdam (9-2-1) the Section
10 Championship after sharing second place in the Division with Canton at 5-3-4.
While the Devil Boys look to pick up from
their postseason run into a new regular season, the OFA Girls will be looking to record a winning season under first year Coach Al Rishe Jr.
BOYS SOCCER
Coach Matt Morley returns seven starters including
a First Team All-NAC Central stopper in junior David
Prudhomme. But the new Devil cast must regenerate the
leadership provided by first-team all-star forward Gian
Rufa and second team selections in sweeper Alec Manke
and halfback Pat Cosmo.
“We will have to find a new defensive combination as
we lost our sweeper and our two outside fullbacks. But
we have a very versatile team, we have a lot of guys who
really know and love soccer,” says Morley.
“We will be mixing and matching a lot of players in the
early season but we have a lot of players who have a lot of
experience.”
The Devils cast of returning starters features three
three-year varsity players in Prudhomme, fellow junior
Nate Peo (F-MF) and senior co-captain Matt Piercey
(MF). The veteran cast also features senior forward and
co-captain Conor Hannan (Sr F), junior goaltender Jacob Sias, senior midfielder Dillon Binion and sophomore forward Peyton Lalone coming off a very promising freshman season.
Other returning seniors are: Pat LaComb (D), Mike
Malott (D), Jed McRoberts (D) and Andrew Roddy (D).
Rounding out a talented junior class are: Seth Pinkerton (MF-D) who moved to the varsity in the later stages
of last year’s NAC campaign, Tristan Moore (MF), DaKota Brady (M-D), Jordan Miller (M-F), Zach Ashley (F),
Hayden Woods (D), Andrew (MF-D) and Austin Putman
(MF-D) and Martin Arquitt (MF).
GIRLS SOCCER
Reversing the outcome of a series of one-goal losses
and three ties is the method that first year coach Al Rishe
Jr. hopes to use to push the OFA Girls to the winning side
the ledger in the always challenging NAC Central.
Last fall Lady Devils enjoyed a solid season tying Potsdam for third place in the NAC Central at 11 points with
a 4-5-3 record.
Rishe succeeds Lauren Morley who stepped down to
devote more time to her family.
Coach Morley, who coached the OFA Boys JV for
several years, will start his varsity coaching career with
a team featuring just two seniors, 13 juniors and three
sophomores.
The Lady Devils’ seniors are forward Brooke Badlam
who will be sidelined until the second half of the season
and halfback Kayla Tolman. Junior Courtney Sherwin at
fullback and sophomore Danielle Guimond at forward
are the other players who played a full season of varsity
last fall.
“I have a very young team and need to replace 12 seniors that graduated from last year’s squad and only
four players returning this year. Despite the loss of so
many players after working with the athletes this week
I see a lot of determined and hard working athletes who
are committed to a winning season,” said Coach Al
Rishe.
“All of our athletes have the talent and are flexible
enough to play anywhere on the field. With the assistance of my wife Mary and experience of Ryan Farrell we
are looking forward to a winning season”.
Coach Rishe expects Courtney Sherwin should be a
force to be reckoned with anchoring a defense which also includes Alicia Sharpe (Jr), Sadie Brown (Jr), Ashleigh
Sovie (Jr) and Janell Cordwell (Jr).
Coach Rishe feels Mollee Ahrens (Jr), Kayla Tolman
(Sr), Samantha Rishe (So), Kaylee L’Orange (So), Kayli
Downey (Jr), and Mikayla Charlton (Jr) will form effective midfield combinations and that Courtney Barley
(Jr), Danielle Guimond(So), Riley Luckie (Jr), Mackenzie
Holland (Jr), and Alicia Shaver (Jr) can produce steady
scoring up front.
The Lady Devils will open their season by hosting their
own Preseason Tournament on Sept. 3-4.

OFA Football Team Gears
Up For Class C Challenge
FALL
SPORTS
SCHEDULES
By DAVE SHEA
OGDENSBURG - A new football season always brings a new set of challenges for a coaching staff.
Along with the normal reconstruction project the OFA coaches had to deal
with a construction project where the early stages of the installation of an allweather turf field is now taking place on the Blue Devils practice field.
The Devils adapted smoothly to practicing at Monnet Park preparing for a
major regular season challenge which sees Potsdam, which went 9-1 in Northern Conference action last fall represented Section 10 very well in the Class A
state tournament, joining OFA. St. Lawrence Central and Canton in the Class
C ranks.
Potsdam moved from Class A to Class C when the state changed its procedure for calculating the classification of schools utilizing merger agreements
with neighboring schools in certain sports.
“Potsdam will be very good once again. They return their quarterback in Will
Coleman and one of the best running backs in the league in O’den Robertson.”
OFA Coach Matt Tessmer feels that his team is off to a very good start toward
meeting the challenges ahead and competing for a third straight trip to the
state tournament.
The state tournament berth will be decided by a sectional tournament this
fall.
The Devils will also have the benefit of facing outstanding competition in
their annual preseason scrimmage on Saturday (11 a.m. start) where they will
host Indian River, Malone and Watertown IHC.
The OFA coaching staff returns intact with Head Coach Matt Tessmer,
coaches Tony Williams, Charlie McCormick and Brett Monnat and longtime
equipment manager Rick Amo.
Leading the Devils into a new season will be a returning first team All-NAC
selection and three-year varsity player in two-way lineman Kevin Goolden
and a second team selection in wide-receiver-defensive back Josh Liebstein
starting his fourth varsity season.
“We had a very good first week of practice. The guys have worked very hard
and are great to work with,” said Coach Tessmer of the OFA 27-man OFA roster
which is developing toward a Sept. 6 home opener against Canton.
“We are inexperienced in spots but we also have guys with a lot of experience. One of our strengths this season will be our receiving corps. We have a lot
of guys who can catch the ball and make plays and offensively we should also
have a strong running game.”
Major keys to exploiting those strengths are the development of first year
starters in the offensive line and developing a quarterback to replace Nate
Angel who was a two-time All-NAC selection. The Devils must also replace the
leadership provided by All-NAC award winners in Alex Farrell (RB, WR, DE),
Jake Garrison (OL-DL), Zach Sharpe (LB-FB) and John Morrison (OL).
Liebstein and Jordan McCormick, a returning starter at running back, are
currently taking practice snaps along with freshman Joe Dalton coming off a
very prolific junior varsity passing season where juniors Nick Sweeney and Jon
Rogers were his big play targets.
Liebstein and McCormick will be part of a cast of players who played regularly both ways last fall for Devils who went 4-3 in the NAC. Other returnees
are seniors : Mitchel Barber (WR, LB), Keegan Clark (OL-DL), Taylor Bouchard
(WE-DB), Jon Tayler (WR-DB), Jake King (OL-DL), Zach Barr (OL-DL), Chandler Barney (WR-DB), Ryan Denny (RB, LB) and junior Nolan Rufa (OL-LB).
The Blue Devils are slated to make their NAC season debut on Friday, September 6, at home against Canton.

HCS Booters Look To Follow
Up Strong Soccer Seasons
By STEVEN HEATON
HEUVELTON – The 2012 soccer season was very good to Heuvelton Central.
The Bulldog Boys claimed the school’s first Section 10 Class D title ever
with a thrilling win over Harrisville. The Lady Bulldogs claimed the NAC
West title and lost to eventual New York State Class D runner up Chateaugay
in the sectional final.
The boys must replace seven senior starters from the 13-3-2 championship squad while girls team will be looking to build on its NAC West title with
eyes on a making a mid-November run.
BOYS SOCCER
The boys soccer team is going to see a restructured starting cast looking to
replace eight seniors headed by NAC West Offensive MVP and Watertown All
North MVP Aaron Cobb who scored 15 goals during the regular season.
Also graduated were: Jon Sloan, goalie Chris Power, Jack Tennant, Mike
and Matt Guardino, Dedrick Johnson and Eric Stewart.
“Seven seniors played key roles in the Section 10 title and made history
before losing to state champion Chazy,” Heuvelton Coach Dave Steele said.
Returning from last year’s team are: Lucas Brown (senior midfield), Joe
McDonnell (senior forward), Anthony Butterfield (junior defense), Will Tennant (Junior Midfielder), Aidan Scagel (Senior Midfield), Dylan Liscum (Senior Defense), Chris Lovely (junior forward), Zach Lashomb (junior goalie),
Tanner Haggert (sophomore forward), Andrew Streeter (junior midfielder)
and Casey Smith (junior defense).
Newcomers include: Cole Piercey (freshman forward), Ben Jacobs (sophomore defense), Josh Trathen (Sophomore defense), Mike Martin (sophomore defense), Carter Pierce (sophomore defense), Jordan Macauley (sophomore defense goalie), and Noah Steele (7th grade forward).
Ben Jacobs, Noah Steele and Joe McDonnell all competed for the FC Freeze
Soccer program this summer. McDonnell also produced some big goals during last season’s playoff run.
“This will be a rebuilding year with a young team, but the title has given
our program a sense of excitement where they understand the level of commitment and work it takes to get to the level that we achieved last year. This
team knows how important and fun it can be to still be playing in November.
It is still in the back of the returners’ minds to be one of the last eight teams
playing soccer in November,” said Steele.
GIRLS SOCCER
Coach Gus Burns returned the bulk of last year’s 14-3-1 but must replace
the leadership of starters in Ali Scalone and Abby Basford on defense and
Ashlyn Piercey in the middle.
“I think we have good leadership in Alexis Weidner, Logan Tallman and
Maddie St. Pierre. We have a good group of young players that are new to the
team this year. Paige McCormick has been playing goal for us and shows a
lot of promise. Ali, Ashlyn and Abby are three tough players to replace and
we’re hoping to fill the gaps with some of the new and returning players. We
are still a work in progress. Our summer soccer was not as productive this
year as in years past and has really made us work on some basic skill things
that the summer season usually helps us get in shape for,” said Burns.
Weidner was Section 10’s leading regular season scorer with 25 goals and
Hannah Thornhill produced seven goals.
Also returning are Alex Steele, Rachael Thornhill, Olivia and Maddie St.
Pierre, Johanna Carmany, Shelby Williams, Renee Breault, Ashlyn Foster,
and Kylie Piercey.
“Eighth grader Alex Steele, a second year starter, has gotten stronger as a
player this season and Taylor Dawley will be helping us a lot this year. And
Rachael and Hanna Thornhill add a nice touch with Rachael playing in a
number of different roles for us.” says Burns.
“I’m also looking forward to seeing the development of some good young
players in Eliza Jane Hamilton, Natalie Barr, Miranda Donnelly, Gabby Johnson, Karina Warren, Kristin Harper, and Erin Kennedy. Overall, I think we
will be a pretty athletic team. I think we will be in the mix at the end just
where in the mix depends on how quickly the girls can pick up where they
left off last year. Starting right out of the gate against what should be a pretty
good Lisbon team is going to test us on how well we are prepared. Overall I
would say we should be as strong as last year but maybe not right away.”

MASSENA - The seeds of potential success for the 2013 edition of
the Massena Central varsity football
team were likely planted last season.
The Raiders closed out 2012 with
three straight wins to finish at 5-4
while the junior varsity squad methodically marched its way to an
undefeated season and coach Anthony Diagostino is hoping to build
a Northern Athletic Conference contender out of a combination of the
core players from both teams.
“We were young last year and we
had some tough losses but we won
our last three games and wound up
with a winning record. We also had a
very good undefeated JV team. That
gives us a good group of returning
players and some good talent coming up and they’ve all shown they’ve
developed a winning attitude,” noted Diagostino as the Raiders gear
up for their season opener on Friday, September 6, at home against
Franklin Academy.
“All of the kids have put in a lot of
hours working out during the offseason and I’m excited to see what
the results of those efforts are going
to be. I can’t wait to get the season
started,” he added.
The Raiders begin the season with
a roster of nearly 40 players that features an even mix of veterans and
newcomers.
Key offensive returnees include
seniors Josh Belile and Rory Corcoran, who are battling for the starting
job at quarterback, and a capable
stable of runningbacks that includes
seniors JP Reagan, Connor Paquin
and Jeremy Malone along with junior Josh Manley.
“Rory took most of the snaps last
year and he’s look good in practice.
Josh didn’t play a lot but he’s put in a
lot of work during the off-season and
has really picked up his game,” said
Diagostino. “At this point, we have
a little bit of a quarterback competition going on and that’s a good
problem to have.”
Reagan and Paquin emerged as
two of the top rushers for Massena
last fall and are expected to play lead
roles this season while Manley and
first-year junior Isaiah Dillabough
will also get their share of carries out
the backfield.
“We’ve got a number of kids who
look pretty good at runningback
right now,” Diagostino noted.
Senior Xavier Viskovich returns to
lead a receiving corps that also includes classmates Billy Orlando and
Kyle Nicholson along with first-year
seniors Robert Cunningham and
Willie Stewart, who competed at the
JV level earlier in their high school
careers but opted not to play last fall.
nior Dakota Bernard (OL/DL) along
with juniors - Jacob Arquette-Laffin
(OL/DL), Cordell Benedict (OL/DL),
Reed Chapman (OL/LB), Bailey Furnace (LO/DL), Sean Green (LO/DL),
Cody Jones (OL/DL), Jayce Lanning
(RB/CB), Brody LeCuyer (OL/DL),
Billy MacCuaig (OL/DL), Thler Mott
(SE/OLB), Zachary Plourde (RB/
LB), Nate Premo (OL/LB), Young Joe
Rourke (OL/DL), Matt Thibault (RB/
OLB) and Tim VanTassell (TE/DE).
As the lone Class A program in the
NAC, the Raiders will not be participating in a Section 10 tournament
this fall and have an automatic bid
to the New York State Tournament.
After closing out the regular season
on October 18 at Potsdam Central,
they will have a two-week break before competing in the first round of
the state Class A playoffs.
Strong Numbers, Enthusiasm Boost SLC Football Hopes
By ALAIN St. PIERRE
BRASHER FALLS - The combination of strong numbers and good attitudes has St. Lawrence Central varsity football coach Bill Scharf looking
forward to the 2013 Northern Athletic
Conference season.
“We lost a few seniors but our numbers are good again and we’re happy
with that. We’re also seeing a lot of enthusiasm and the kids all worked really hard during the off-season which
is something else that we’re really
happy about,” said Scharf as the Larries get set to open at Tupper Lake on
Friday, September 6.
Of the 30 players on the SLC roster, nearly 20 are back from last year’s
squad which posted a 1-7 record.
Senior Mike Burns, who shared
quarterbacking duties last season,
is slated to take over the starting job
this year with classmate Brad Francis
serving as his back-up.

The Raiders suffered their biggest losses to graduation on the line
where they will look to fill the void
left by the departures of standouts
Jordan Hart and Kioweren Rouke.
Third-year senior Josh Blair is
expected to anchor the line hopes
along with classmates Sam Gerber,
Ross Davis and Cody Hooper, who
is slated to start at center. First-year
junior Nolan Terrance leads a promising group of newcomers looking to
earn playing time in the trenches.
“Jordan and Kioweren are big
losses but we like what we’ve seen so
far from our line,” said Diagostino.
Other veterans on the Massena
roster include seniors - Andrew

The Larries boast some outstanding depth at runningback for 2013
led by seniors David Plante and Chris
Tabor, who is making the transition
from lineman. First-year sophomores
Mark Crump, Brandon LaBarge and
Noah Felix are also showing great potential at ball-carriers along with firstyear freshman Mike Plante.
“We have quite a few guys that can
run the ball this year and we’re hoping to take advantage of that,” noted
Scharf. “We’re hoping to be more of
a running team with three guys out of
the backfield.”
The Larries also feature solid experience at tight end with the return
of seniors Devon Agen, Jon Rubado
Lavare, Nathan John, Taylor Richard
and Tyler Losey.
Leading candidates to handle line
duties include; seniors Gavin Chase
(G), Hunter Ramsdell (T), Lee LaFleur

junior returnees Chris Gray (C), Josh
Goodreau (T), Caleb Gomes (G) and
Joel Truax (C).
“We’ve moved some guys around
on the line from last year but so far, we
like what we’ve seen from this years
group in practice,” Scharf noted.
Newcomers looking to earn playing time include; senior Adam Dishaw
(TE) and Austin Thompson (TE) along
with junior John Cherniak (T), sophomores - Garrette Clark (G), Connor
Francis (T), Colton Krise (TE), Leroy
Gotham (RB), Dennis Powell (TE) and
Hunter Storrin, and freshman Dylan
McCarthy (C).
The Larries are one of four Class C
school competing for Section 10 honors this fall. After closing out the regular season October 19 at home against
Franklin Academy, they are slated to
be in the sectional semi-finals along
with Class C rivals Potsdam, OFA,
Canton and FA.

Potsdam Football Eyes Successful Move To Class C
By JOHN TURCOTTE
POTSDAM - Potsdam Central’s
football team was a force in 2012,
finishing 9-1 versus Section 10 competition, capturing both the Northern Athletic Conference and Section
10 Class A championships and then
playing well versus eventual state
champion Burnt Hills in the first
round of state play.
“We were proud of our season last
year. We knew Burnt Hills would be
tough, but we did some good things
in that game. We especially played
well early,” said 11th-year Potsdam
coach Jim Kirka. “Burnt Hills won the
state championship which shows a
lot about us. We fared about as well as
anybody else against them last year.
But now it’s a new season and our
kids are excited about it.”
The Sandstoners return several
starters on both sides of the ball and
are led by an outstanding group of
seniors. Though 6-8 receiver Shawn
Clark has opted for prep school, the
Potsdam senior class will include
veteran quarterback Will Coleman,
speedy halfback Oden Robertson, a
pair of proven fullbacks in Ryan McFadden and Andrew Ace, receiver
Jacob Bryant and two-way linemen
Matt Cincinnati (3rd-year starter),
Dylan Greer and Matt Liscum. Also
looking to step up this year are Josh
Locey and Norwood-Norfolk student
Travis Hall.
“The kids worked hard all summer
in the weight room and are ready for
the new season,” said Kirka.
Underclassmen to watch include
tight end Max Warden, along with

GOUVERNEUR – Playing for a purpose.
The Gouverneur Football team will
be doing just that in the 2013 NAC play
as junior Tristan Pataky is out for the
season due to leukemia. His battle will
be recognized with his jersey number
#44 on their helmets.
“Tristan was diagnosed in early
July and he was looking forward to his
sophomore season at the varsity level.
He was going to be a big asset for us at
fullback and linebacker. His spirits are
high heading into chemo and as a team
we are rallying with him,” said Gouverneur coach Sean Devlin.
The 2013 Wildcats have just six seniors on the squad.
“We are going to be very, very young.
We have 22 juniors and four sophomores on a 30-plus member squad.
We’ve got a lot of big shoes to fill from
graduation but we do have some talent returning that are mostly juniors so
were just looking to improve everyday,”
said Devlin who must replace first team
All-NAC in quarterback Mark Horne,
lineman Hunter Ayen and Brandon
Washburn and halfback - linebacker
Levi Tupper and NAC Sportsmanship
Award selection Justin Cummings.
Cody Ashley (TE, DE), Kevin Burns
(OL, DL), Dustin Hutton (OL, DL),
Brandon Ramos (WR, DE), Mason
Wing (OL, DL), and Christian Gillian
(WR, DB) are the lone seniors.
Hutton was a big force last season on
the line.
Second Team All NAC Troy Gates, a
junior, moves into the quarterback position for Mark Horne who dubbed as a
quarterback wildcat type running back
last season. Classmate Jose Flores and
Adrian McShane look to be big contributors offensively at running back
and at defensive back and linebacker
respectively. Aaron McEathron is a big
tightend as a junior and will also play
linebacker.
“Troy, Dustin, Adrian, Jose and
Aaron are five solid players to build
around. We’ve got some lineman
coming in that need some work but
they’ve been working very hard,” said
Devlin.
“We play Potsdam our first game.
They’re the team to beat in Class C this
season and might be one of the best
in the section. They have a good line,
good skilled personnel and they are
well coached. We just need to keep improving with every practice and game
because its just us and Malone in Class
B this season for the right to play Section 7,” said Devlin.

younger guys who came up last year
and will be playing right away,” Kirka
said. “We have guys who have been

they’re going to get it. For example,
we’re looking for good things from

Mergers will continue with both
Norwood-Norfolk and Madrid-Waddington, though the state has re-figured how they do classifications for
the post season. Potsdam moves from

they allow us to play competitive

Children’s Sports Injuries
Make sure your kids are into sports for the fun, friends and
some exercise... not for the pro scouts.
The NY times says that, “Intensive sports training for children
is creating an epidemic of stress fractures and other injuries
usually associated with adults.”
Orthopedists and pediatricians blame specialty sports camps
and longer training seasons.
Also adding to the problems are inexperienced coaches, poor
fitting equipment and fields too big for kids.

Lisbon Boys, Girls Looking To Rebuild Leadership
LISBON – The 2013 Lisbon Boys
and Girls Soccer Camp will be looking to replace some key leaders from
outstanding seasons.
Boys Soccer Coach Bill Reed lost
several starters including NAC West
Defensive MVP Adam Felt from a
10-2-2 NAC West Co-Championship
team.
Girl Soccer Coach Scott Richardson lost four starting seniors including a five- year player in centerhalfback Gabby Walker from an 11-3
team.
Both coaches feel that their teams
have the potential to develop another solid run in the division.
GIRLS SOCCER
Coach Scott Richardson must replace four quality seniors this fall
but does have a cast of young players
with a great deal of potential.
“We have eight sophomores that
are getting adjusted to the varsity
level. Defensively we have some
veterans in the back, in the midfield
we will have to make some adjustments and offensively we have some
younger girls that are going to need
to step up this season and create
some scoring opportunities.”
The Knights three of last year’s
four leading scorers are senior midfielder Beth Crowley (14 goals in
regular season), sophomore striker
Madison Vine (12 goals in reg. season), and junior striker Alex Amo (7
goals).
Senior goalie Jackie Sovie anchors
the defense as a fine collegiate prospect and will be joined in the backfield by senior Hanna Richardson
(MF), seniors Maeve Bowdish, Alyshia Murray, sweeper Holly Williams, and sophomore Katie Sovie.
Other returnees include Aneissa
Fields (junior fullback), Courtney
Green (junior midfielder), Kati Barney (sophomore fullback), Madeline
Caufield (sophomore, midfielder),
Sierra Erwin (sophomore midfielder)
and Rileigh Mee (junior midfielder).
Newcomers include: Adrien Hyde
(sophomore midfielder), Rebekah
Robinson (sophomore midfielder),
Fayeanne West (sophomore midfielder), Maggie Crowley (freshman
midfielder), and Claire Donaldson
(eighth grader fullback).
“I expect the West to be very challenging again this season. Every
game will be a tough battle,” said
Richardson.
BOYS SOCCER
Coach Bill Reed opens his 15th
season making a major personnel
move by shifting three-year goaltender Jimmy Robinson, a First-Team
All-NAC West performer to sweeper
in a restructed defense which must
replace all-stars in Jim Darcy and
Matt Snyder.
“Jimmy Robinson is an outstanding athlete and is looking forward to
playing in the field,” said Reed who
opens the season with a roster which
includes 14 underclassmen.
“We are a young and we don’t have
a great deal of team speed. But this
team works extremely hard and we
have two of our leading scorers back
from last year in Adam Kelley and
Cody James. All but one member of
the team attended our preseason
summer camp and they have all responded well to some double sessions since practice began.”
Leading the Knights into a new
season are five co-captains in Jimmy Robinson, senior stopper Ryan
Buckley, senior midfielder Jake Putney, sophomore midfielder Adam
Kelley and senior forward Cody
James.
Other returning players are: senior
John Hunter (D), a starting defender
in junior junior Tristan Vine, sophomores Riley Alberto (MF), Coleman
Smith (MF), Jake Pellerin (MF), Connor Hammond (MF), Kody Allen (F),
Logan Matthews (F-MF) and sophomore Jordan Carr (D).
A freshman class showing excellent potential includes Issac Sovie,
a transfer from OFA, who will take
over in goal; midfielders Koby and
Kane Jordan and Jake Kiah and forward Ryan Mason.
Midfielder Josh Lampett is the
lone eighth grader on the squad and
two other first year players are sophomore Donnie Duprey (D) and Brazilian exchange student Pedro Netto
(Jr-F).
“This team will improve a great
deal and I am very excited about the
season. They key is to get our freshmen to play like sophomores and
our sophomores and juniors to play
like seniors at the end of the season,”
said Coach Reed who will be assisted
by Kelley Geary and John McBath.
“We should know where we stand
by the time the division season
opens. We scrimmaged Canton and
play Gouverneur and either OFA or
Norwood-Norfolk in the OFA Tournament.”
Morristown, Hammond Girls
Soccer Poised To Improve
MORRISTOWN - Rather than focusing on their players lost, Morristown
coach Danielle Folino is looking forward to who’s back for the 2013 season.
Coach Folino is excited to have a roster of 16 players up four from last
year.
“I can tell you that this team will be much stronger than last year. We lost
Erica Fishel and Karissa Bertrand but the girls we return are stronger players,” noted Folino.
Margret Troiano and Mackenzie Barse are the lone returning seniors
but the junior and sophomore class are blessed with several good athletes
including juniors - Jessica Geddes, Samantha Green, Micaela Roberts and
sophomores - Elissa Bertrand, Taylor Piercey, and Liz Troiano. Freshman
include Tiana Cardinel, Mikayla Dulmage, Logan Green, Abby Stout, Hailey Whitmarsh, and Megan Vollmer. Katie Ruso rounds out the team as a
first year senior.
Hammond: Coach Shawn Dack’s girls soccer team must replace three
outstanding leaders including Alyssa Crosby (12 goals), Gabby Marshall,
and Macy Wilson.
The Lady Red Devils return proven scorer junior Courtney Bova (19
goals in regular season) and senior Tayler Bowman (nine goals) and senior
defender Emily Bush. Mikayla Horton, Cassie Whalen and Kaitlin Gleason
return as juniors and Hailey Ogden, Melissa Proven, and Abby Hodgdon
are returning sophomores.
First year performers include Ally Crosby (eight grader), Paige Frisina
(freshman), Morgan Hanley (freshman), Marinah Simons (freshman),
Mariah Simons (freshman), and sophomore Madison Mullikin.
“I really like the look of our team and I believe once they gain their experience I think they will be fine. We just have to cut our teeth fast. During
our scheduled scimmage our eyes should be opened there. Once they gain
the feel of the varsity game good things will occur. So far we are working
hard and building the chemistry and as I said earlier I like the look of what
we are and where we are going,” said Shawn Dack.

NAC Soccer Realigns; Football Classes Change
By DAVE SHEA
In order to increase continuity in the sports that are played by the great majority
of Northern Conference schools, the NAC will return to an alignment with three
divisions in the coming school year.
The new alignment for Boys and Girls Soccer, Boys and Girls Basketball, Baseball and Softball will be the traditional Central, East and West Divisions.
The East and West Divisions and Central Division, except for Boys Basketball
and Baseball, will be eight-team divisions. NAC Central Baseball and Boys Soccer
will feature seven teams.
In the 2012-13 school year the sports of Boys and Girls Basketball. Girls Soccer
and Softball all featured four divisions: East, Wednesday, Central and North.
To create three eight-team divisions in those sports Class C schools NorwoodNorfolk, St. Lawrence Central, Tupper Lake and Brushton-Moira will all be involved in a three-year rotation into the Central Division.
Canton, which has returned to the Class B ranks for boys-girls soccer and basketball and soccer, baseball and softball, will play in the NAC Central in all of those
sports.
The seven-team NAC Central for Boys Soccer and Baseball will include Canton,
OFA, Gouverneur. Salmon River, Potsdam, Massena and Malone.
In the upcoming school year Norwood-Norfolk will start the rotation into the

Look Solid In NAC West Soccer
Morristown, Hammond and Hermon-DeKalb will all be looking to be competitive at
season’s end in NAC West Boys Soccer.
Morristown: First year coach George Beaulieu will be mixing up his lineup quite
often in 2013.
“We’re going to have several players play numerous positions. We return eight starters but the loss of Dakota Marshall, Skyler Cobb and Bobby Simmons are going to be
tough,” said Beaulieu.
Juniors Zack Kanaly (six goals) and Jake VanArnam (three goals) and sophomore
Ryan Vollmer (five goals) are three key returning offensive players while junior Luke
King is preparing for his second season as the starting goalie. Juniors Devin Dulmage,
Karter VanArnam, and Tyler Delosh and Jacob Fox were starters last season and James
Richards also saw time in the defense last year as a sophomore. Newcomers include
freshman Colton Colby, Austin Brooks, Brady Elliott, and Jaxson LaPiene.
“How quickly our freshmen adapt to the varsity level will make a big difference on
the way our season goes. We have some talent but we must stay healthy and eligible.”
added Beaulieu.
Hammond: Coach Katina Dillon’s boys team must replace Darin Bresett, Nolan
Martin, Caleb Christman, and Adam Bickelhaupt.
The Red Devils are returning just two returning seniors but a host of juniors have
varsity experience.
“We don’t have many seniors but our juniors gained valauble playing time last season and have looked solid early,” said Coach Dillon.
Colin Martin and Zach Howie are returning seniors and join juniors Tristen Simons,
Cordell Martin, Peyton Frisina, Jon Winchester, Matt Martin, Zech Cunningham,
Brock Tulley, and Jaylyn Raglin. Sophomore Nick Jewitt is a proven solid player and
will be joined by classmates Spenser Pease, Colin Youngs, Jacob Tate and Mason Rogers. Devin Leach and Dustin Simons round out the team as seniors.
Hermon-DeKalb: Numbers shouldn’t be a problem this season for coach Marty
Amo as the Demons support an 18-player squad.
“We have 18 players and several of them have the skills needed for the varsity level.
We have few seniors with starting soccer experience but our juniors and sophomores
are competing,” said Amo who must replace leading scorer Macauley Snell (15 goals in
regular season).
The Demons roster includes senior midfielder Cameron Hance, junior defenders
Jaron Robisnson and Zach Robinson, junior goalie Brad Weller, junior forward Patrick
Woodrow, and sophomore Ryan Brown.
Other players include: seniors Eli Smith, Cody Merritt, Shane Weber, Garrett Villeneuve, and Ethan Daniels, juniors Ryan Matthews, Brandon McAdam and Harrison Chilton, and sophomores Hunter Woodrow, Steve Woods, and Dylan Burwell and
freshman Reilly O’Donnell.
Girls Basketball and Brushton-Moira will play in the NAC Central in Softball.
NAC Central Girls Soccer: Massena, Malone, Gouverneur, OFA, Salmon River,
Canton, Potsdam and Norwood-Norfolk.
NAC East Girls Soccer: Chateaugay, Parishville-Hopkinton, St. Regis Falls,
Colton-Pierrepont, St. Lawrence Central, Tupper Lake, Brushton-Moira, MadridWaddington.
NAC Central B-G Basketball: Massena, Malone, Gouverneur, OFA, Salmon River, Canton, Potsdam, St. Lawrence Central.
NAC East B-G Basketball: Chateaugay, Parishville-Hopkinton, St. Regis Falls,
Colton-Pierrepont, Madrid-Waddington, Tupper Lake, Norwood-Norfolk, Brushton-Moira.
NAC Central Softball: Massena, Malone, Gouverneur, OFA, Salmon River, Canton, Potsdam, Brushton-Moira.
NAC East Softball: Chateaugay, Parishville-Hopkinton, St. Regis Falls, ColtonPierrepont, Madrid-Waddington, Tupper Lake, Norwood-Norfolk, St. Lawrence
Central.
The NAC West will feature its traditional eight Class D schools in boys and girls
soccer and basketball, baseball and softball: Clifton-Fine, Edwards-Knox, Hammond, Harrisville, Hermon-DeKalb, Heuvelton, Lisbon and Morristown.
FOOTBALL CLASSIFICATIONS CHANGE
Because New York State has changed how it applies school size numbers for
merger situations the Northern Conference Football will feature changes in class
alignment.
Massena will be the only Class A School.
Malone and Gouverneur will play in the Class B ranks.
Potsdam moves into the Class C ranks with OFA, Canton and St. Lawrence Central
Tupper Lake remains the only Class C School.
A sectional tournament will be held to determine the Class B and C state representatives.
In cross country the new application of merger school classifications will see
Canton moving into the Class C ranks.

Local Products Bolster SUNY Potsdam Women’s Soccer Hopes
POTSDAM - The 2013 edition of the SUNY Potsdam
women’s soccer team will be one of the youngest in program history and in the nation. This year’s Bears will feature no seniors and just four juniors along with 15 new
faces.
Third-year head coach Mark Misiak understands the
challenge, but is excited about the opportunity to build a
new squad.
“It’s fun in the sense that we can mold these players and
we hope that they can learn our system quickly and have
them do things our way,” said Misiak. “In the same breath
there are going to be some growing pains for sure. They will
be very green. So it’s important for all of our players to be
prepared to jump right in the fire. We’ll rely heavily on the
few returners that we have to really set the tone for how to
go about things.”
The Bears will miss the offense of Heather Johnson
and Ashley Thayer and the leadership of Alissa Tischler
and Stephanie Cox, but new junior captain Kate Clauss
(Bloomfield, N.Y) and junior vice captain Kristin Webster
(Schenectady, N.Y) have stepped up to lead their teammates.
Misiak has also added a very experienced assistant
coach in Lauren Mackay.
Mackay comes to the Bears after spending three seasons
as the girls varsity coach at Stillwater (N.Y.) High School.
“Lauren is very professional and very knowledgeable,”
Misiak said. “Her playing and coaching background are
going to serve her very well. I think that everything that
Lauren brings to the table is going to be a huge benefit to
our players. They’ll really enjoy working with her on a daily
basis.”
FORWARD
Of the six strikers on the roster, four are back from last
season. Sophomore Erin McClusky (Watertown, N.Y.)
played in all 18 games in 2012 with 16 starts and notched a
goal and an assist for three points.
“Erin played better and better as the year went on last
season,” said Misiak. “She understood the nuances of playing forward in college. So we’re looking for Erin to have a
really solid sophomore campaign.”
Junior Nina Komosinski (Akron, N.Y.) and sophomores
Brenna Vukelic (Buffalo, N.Y.) and Ally Blazey (Palmyra,
N.Y.) are also back. Komosinski scored a goal in 15 games,
Vukelic did the same in 12 and Blazey saw action in 15 contests.
Misiak is excited about the potential of his two newcomers, freshmen Hailey Hollenbeck (Hudson, N.Y.) and Alexis
Beach (Chateauguay, N.Y.).
“Hailey went through a disappointing knee injury last
season,” Misiak said. “But she’s back to full fitness now.
She‘s a natural goal scorer and we’re going to rely on Hailey
to score 15-20 goals for us. And Alexis is extremely quick.
We’re going to look for her to run behind defenses and
open things up for us that way. Being a local kid, it’s going
to be fun for her to compete in front of her friends and family.”
MIDFIELD
Juniors Clauss and Webster are back with sophomores
Jess Sterns (Henrietta, N.Y.) and Bri McClusky (Watertown,
N.Y.) to lead a solid midfield corps that is joined by four
fresh faces. Clauss and Webster each started all 18 games
for the Bears last season, totaling four (1g, 2a) and two
points (2a), respectively.
Sterns started all 16 games she played and contributed a
goal and an assist. McClusky played in all but one of Potsdam’s 18 games.
“Kate is going to be an important part of our attack,”
said Misiak. “We’re going to look to her to play between the
lines and score some more goals.
Kristen has blossomed in the holding midfield role. She
played there all last spring and did a great job in the number six spot. She’s really important in our team’s overall
balance. She distributes the ball so well.
Jess is a great attacking threat. She loves to take on players one-on-one.”
Among the new Bear midfielders, freshman Kaylen
Van Wagner (Red Hook, N.Y.) and junior Keely Sammon
(Lowville, N.Y.) stand out.
“Kaylen can hit a ball 70 yards on a rope with both feet,”
Misiak said.
“She’s going to be the focal point of our attacking set
pieces to help us score some more goals. Keely is a transfer from Herkimer Community College. Her best attribute
right now is her experience. She can help our younger players transition from high school soccer to college soccer.”
Massena native Steffanie Premo (Massena, N.Y.) along
with sophomore Mackenzie Cotter (Bloomingdale, N.Y.)
give Potsdam even more options at midfield.
DEFENSE
Four sophomores and a junior return on defense for the
Bears and are joined by five rookies. Sophomore Summer
Bader (Atlanta, Ga.) started eight contests and notched a
goal in 2012, while her classmate Chloe Hay (Burnt Hills,
N.Y.) started every one of the team’s 18 games and recorded an assist. Sophomore Marissa Skaczkowski (Mechanicville, N.Y.) played in 17 games with four starts, while junior Alli Cleaver (Watertown, N.Y.) made 10 starts a year
ago. Sophomore Cassandra McNitt (Ballston Lake, N.Y.)
played in 12 contests.
“Summer will be an important player because of her
physical presence,”
said Misiak. “We need her to be a more vocal leader back
there, which is something I know she can do. Chloe will be
at left back and has a natural advantage on that side being
left-footed. Although she is a great defender, we can really
look to her being an attacking presence as well.
She had a fantastic season last year and probably played
the most minutes.
We need her to pick up where she left off. Marissa is going to be somebody we’re going to rely on heavily because
she’s just so versatile. She can play outside back, center
back and midfield. She just has a fantastic engine. She never stops working and that’s infectious for the whole team.”
Freshmen Alex Guidarelli (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.),
Amanda Peterson (West Chazy, N.Y.) and Hannah Keggins
(Watertown, N.Y.) headline the newcomers in the defensive zone.
“Alex, who comes from the Cortlandt Venom is a good
solid soccer player,”
Misiak said. “She’s good with her feet and good on the
ball. She can do a lot of different things to help our team.
Amanda has a great soccer IQ and reads the game so well.
Hannah is super quick back there and will be difficult for
attackers to beat her one-on-one.”
Sara Livecchi (Red Hook, N.Y.) and another former Massena Raider, Kaleigh Zappia (Massena, N.Y.), round out the
Bears defense.
GOALTENDER
Between the pipes, Potsdam will rely on freshman Lauren Haase (Williamsville, N.Y.) to take the starting role and
fellow first-year keeper and Parishville native Michaela
Cole (Parishville, N.Y.) to back her up.
“Lauren is our starting goalkeeper and she is very capable,” said Misiak.
“I’m supremely confident in Lauren’s ability to step in
right away and be the backbone of our defense. She grew
up playing for a great club and a great high school. We have
no concerns about her stepping in right away and becoming a force in goal for us. Michaela has just stepped into a
goalkeeping position with our team. She understood that
we needed some security back there and has selflessly
done what’s best for the team.”
SCHEDULE
The Bears open the season on Aug. 31-Sept. 1 with a pair
of challenging non-conference contests as they host the
Collegiate Village Cup. They kick off the SUNYAC gauntlet on Sept. 28, with a home contest against Plattsburgh.
Potsdam will face all three local colleges- Clarkson, SUNY
Canton and St. Lawrence, at Maxcy’s Turf Field this year.
“The local games are something we’re really going to focus on,” Misiak added. “It’s going to be nice to have all the
local games here at Potsdam.

Franklin Academy Looks To Rebuild Football Contender
By JOHN GOKEY
MALONE - The Franklin Academy
varsity football team enters the 2013
fall season as the defending Section
10 and Class B champion. But it will
be difficult for the Huskies to repeat
as the team was hit extremely hard by
graduation. FA lost its starting quarterback, all of the starting receivers,
some of the running backs and offensive linemen. All of the graduation losses greatly affected the defensive side of the ball, as well, including
three-quarters of the linebacking unit
and most of the starting defensive
backfield.
But don’t utter the words “rebuilding year” to the members of the 2013
varsity squad as the team, along with
the coaching staff of Greg Marshall,
Cory West and Brian Doe, don’t believe that rebuilding fits the current
edition of the FA gridiron gang.
“These guys just don’t want to hear
that term. They don’t believe that this
team is rebuilding, just moving forward,” stated Malone Head Coach
Greg Marshall.
“This team is young and extremely
talented,” continued Marshall. “But
we need to have some athletes step up
and be leaders. We have some strong
candidates who have already stepped
to the front, shown the ability to lead
the team in practice. These are the
same ones that stepped up workouts
on their own over the summer and got
some of the other players involved in
running and in the weight room.”
Pertinent to Marshall’s statement
was the fact that as practice concluded, the team, as a whole, started running up and down the hills at the west
end of Crowner Field on the Malone
campus.
“That’s what I mean,” added Marshall, pointing to his charges working
out on their own. “The team is working really hard.”
Getting in football shape is only
part of the problem for the Huskies.
The biggest concern for FA will be at
the quarterback position, replacing
NAC standout Mitchell Gallagher,
who graduated from Franklin Academy and is now playing football for St.
Lawrence University. The departed
QB/LB is a two-time Section 10 MVP
and the latest recipient of the Don
Petty Award, which is voted on by
league officials and given to the section’s top football player.
The current edition of the Huskies
have a pair of players looking to step
in and fill the huge void left by Gallagher’s graduation: senior Jake Henning and sophomore Camron Gallagher, Mitchell’s younger brother.
“Both are working very hard to earn
the starting spot,” acknowledged the
coach. “Henning is showing his senior leadership with the younger Gallagher and it seems to be helping out
both players. There is a competition
between the two of them, and it’s a
good competition. Both players are
feeding off one another, learning from
each other. They both make mistakes,
then get together and discuss what
the solution will be.”
And it’s not just the quarterback
position that the Huskies must fill
some large voids, but at wide receiver
as well. Also gone from the 2012 team
are speedy wideouts Harvey Smith
(University of Notre Dame), John Picaro (SUNY Plattsburgh), JP King (U.S.
Navy), and Nate Monette (SUNY Canton).
And if that’s not enough of a problem for the coaching staff, most of
the offensive and defensive line players have graduated from the green
& white ranks, which include NAC
standout Kelsey Head, Danny Sanchez, Cody Prue, Matt Ellison and
Duncan Marshall.
The Huskies, despite those losses,
do have a solid core of returning players to both the line and to the backfield.
Big men Tehatakenta Boots, Tanner Godin and Joe Gokey return from
the championship season a year ago,
while hard-hitting Tucker Bartenslager and Evan Mannix also look to
make an impact on both sides of the
ball.
Bartenslager is fighting for a starting spot in the offensive backfield
along with rough and tough runners
Jake Perry and Cody Smith, as well as
the quick-footed Devin Noreault. Also in the backfield mix is sophomore
Zach Raymond, another speedster
who packs a punch arriving from a
successful junior varsity team.
Bartenslager, Perry, Noreault,
and Smith are projected into a linebacker position while sophomore
Josh Dora will join the battle in the
trenches with Boots, Godin and
Gokey. Also looking for a starting
spot up front will be Mannix, Andrew Laplante and Jacob Scharf,
who has sprouted up since hockey
season and spent a good portion of
time in the weight room during the
offseason.
In the defensive backfield, Henning, Jarret Lamica and Camron
Gallagher are vying for a safety position while the Huskies have size and
speed at the corners with Raymond,
Jordan Yando, Abe Gravell, Ryan
Hooper, Eric Stacy, Erik Grytebust,
and Dakota Connell all looking to
break into the starting lineup.
“We are young, and we will make
mistakes. But it’s learning from
them and moving forward that will
be the key to this team’s success this
season,” summarized Coach Marshall. “Our line is very big and athletic and we have some good receivers and running backs.”
Franklin Academy has its first
challenge of the season on Saturday, Aug. 31, in a four-team scrimmage in Ogdensburg. The Huskies
will open up their title defense on
Friday, Sept. 6, under the lights in
Massena against the Red Raiders.
Canton Football Eyes Boost From JV Restart
By JOHN TURCOTTE
CANTON - Canton Central’s football program has overcome one hurdle and is now prepared to take on
several more.
A drive to bring back the JV program for the 2013 season has recently
proved successful, with fundraisers
and donations to pay the estimated
$2,252 needed for travel and officials. Now the Golden Bears will feature modified, JV and varsity teams,
the latter to be coached for the fifth
straight season by Austin Weakfall
who will also return to teaching social
studies in the Canton school system,
coming over from Heuvelton.
“The varsity numbers are low, but
very good at the JV and modified
levels. When we got the news about
getting the JV team back, then right
away the numbers began rising,” said
Weakfall. “We’re at a developmental
stage right now, a really crucial time
in our program. Some of these guys
have sacrificed by playing young on
the varsity without us having a JV
team. Now we have that back and it
should really help us.”
Canton has been winless the past
two seasons and is still inexperienced
at the varsity level with just three seniors on the roster.
But in the lower grades, it’s not
only numbers on the increase, but
it’s also talent. Also the merger agreement with Edwards-Knox has been
restored and mergers with HermonDeKalb and Lisbon will continue. And
a new pro-style offense has been installed by volunteer assistant coach
John Vandevere who brings much
coaching experience in from Pennsylvania.
All this makes for optimism as the
program moves forward.
With the graduation losses of
league Defensive MVP Jay Proulx and
first-team All Northern Cody Peters,
key returning starters include senior
fullback/lineman T.J. Lumbard, junior quarterback Hunter Yerdon, junior running back Peyton Vanbibber
and a third-year varsity starter in junior tight end Cole Zeller,
“Peyton is our go-to back who we’ll
have for this year and next year. He’s
a good all-around kid and good allaround athlete and he’ll be carrying
the load,” said Weakfall.
“And the experience Hunter has
had the past two years at quarterback
will really help him. He’s ready to take
the bull by the horns. He knows what
he’s doing, he’s learning the new offense and he’s showing leadership
qualities,” he added.
Other Canton players to watch
include junior running back Garrison Barcomb who was an offensive
award-winner at this summer’s Brian
Leonard football camp; a transfer
from the state of Florida in sophomore linebacker/tight end Chris
Tompkins and senior two-way lineman Zach Markel.
E-K will send over eight players including senior lineman Lenny Walrath, who played modified at Canton
before the merger was temporarily halted, along with a pair of sophomores in rugged lineman Shane
Mackin and speedy receiver-defensive back Devin Sharlow.
“We’re hungry for that first win,”
said Weakfall. “The guys are excited
for that. Our program really needs
that.” Dave Webster is the program’s
lone paid assistant coach while other
volunteer assistants include Athletic
Director Bill Porter and recently-retired Canton teacher-coach Sparky
Newman. All five Canton coaches will
be involved with all three levels of the
program.
“There’s a lot of talent in the ninth
and 10th grades and we’re looking to
groom that talent,” noted Porter.
With the athletic fields under reconstruction, Canton will play its
scheduled home games on the road,
unless an agreement is worked out to
play some or all of its home games at
St. Lawrence University’s Leckonby
Stadium. Scheduled home games for
the JV team will be played on the road,
but modified home games will likely
be played on Canton’s practice field.
Canton is scheduled to open its
varsity season September 6 at Ogdensburg.

Clarkson Soccer, Volleyball Teams Debut This Weekend
POTSDAM - The Clarkson University men’s
and women’s soccer teams will both be hosting season-opening tournaments this weekend while the highly touted women’s volleyball team heads to SUNY Cortland.
VOLLEYBALL
Ranked 23rd in the AVCA Preseason Poll
and picked unanimously as the team to beat
in the Liberty League, the Clarkson University
Volleyball team shoulders some significant
expectations entering the 2013 season. That
campaign will begin this weekend at the Red
Dragon Invitational (hosted by SUNY Cortland) as the Golden Knights will take on four
legitimately tough opponents, a group with a
collective record of 106-34 from 2012.
Three of this weekend’s four opponents participated in the NCAA Tournament along with
the Knights last year, though none reached
the NCAA Quarterfinals in 2012. Clarkson will
open up at 5:00 pm on Friday with Richard
Stockton (NJ), a team that is receiving votes
in the preseason national poll. The Ospreys
went 28-7 overall last year and have been to
five straight NCAA Tournaments, though the
team has yet to break through in similar fashion to Clarkson last year, having posted two
victories in 10 matches in eight tournament
appearances.
Immediately following the match against
the Opsreys, Clarkson will take on Mount
Union (OH), a team that defeated the Knights
in three straight sets early on in the 2012 season. The Purple Raiders are ranked 11th in the
country currently, having gone 27-7 in 2012,
and are 3-3 overall in three of the last four
NCAA Tournaments, having won at least one
match in each year.
Saturday’s opponents are no easier than
Friday’s start, as Clarkson will take on regional opponent Buffalo State at 1:30 pm. The
Bengals had their best season ever, in terms of
winning percentage, last year going 26-8, just
two victories shy of the school mark. Buffalo
State and Clarkson are no strangers to competition, but the last meeting occurred in 2010
while the Bengals were still rebuilding. Since
then, the Bengals claimed a regular-season
championship in the SUNYAC and were one
of the final teams cut from at-large consideration in the NCAA Tournament in 2012.
The final match of the weekend begins at
4:00 pm when the Golden Knights will face
Juniata College. The Eagles are one of the
most decorated Division III programs in the
country with 32 consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances and a pair of National
Championships (2004, 2006). This will be the
first ever meeting between Clarkson and Juniata and while the Golden Knights are a relative newcomer to the national scene, the two
squads are evenly matched according to the
preseason poll, as the Eagles sit at #20 in the
AVCA rankings. Juniata has been in “rebuilding mode” for the last two years, posting fewer
than 30 victories for the first time since 1979
after going 25-12 last year. Since the start of
the program nearly 40 years ago, the Eagles
have lost more than 10 matches in a season
only five times.
The Golden Knights are returning nearly
the entire roster from last year’s team that
reached the NCAA Quarterfinals, including four Liberty League All-Stars, the Liberty
League Rookie of the Year and ECAC Upstate
Rookie of the Year (Victoria Kirkemo), and
the AVCA New York Region Rookie of the Year
(Aishvina Arasu). Clarkson has reached the
NCAA Tournament four consecutive seasons
and has the second-best record in the region
over that span, winning 116 of 149 matches
(.779 winning percentage).
MEN’S SOCCER
Looking to improve upon their 2-13-3 record from last year, the Clarkson University
Men’s Soccer team will get its first chance to
show their young team, including 15 freshmen, as they host the North Country Classic
this weekend. The Golden Knights will take
on the SUNY Cortland Red Dragons Friday
at 3 p.m., followed by the Stevens Institute of
Technology Ducks at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
The Golden Knights are 2-11 all-time
against the SUNY Cortland, including five
straight losses dating back to 2002. Cortland
went 9-8-1 last year, including a 5-3-1 record
in the SUNYAC. They dominated at home,
posting a 7-1-1 mark, but struggled on the
road, going 2-7-0. They defeated SUNY Geneseo 3-1 in the SUNYAC quarterfinals before
falling to top-seeded SUNY Plattsburgh 4-2 in
the semifinals.

Clarkson has never played Stevens Institute
of Technology, and the 13th ranked Ducks are
coming off a very impressive 2012 campaign.
With an overall record of 18-3-1, including a
perfect 7-0-0 in the Empire 8, Stevens earned
the top seed in the conference. The Ducks
cruised by Elmira College 5-0 in the semifinals
before defeating Ithaca College 3-2 in penalty
kicks after playing to a 0-0 draw in regulation
to win the Empire 8 and clinch a birth in the
NCAA tournament. Stevens won two games,
defeating Methodist University and Haverford College before finally falling to the University of Scranton 1-0 in the round of 16.
Clarkson is led by the return of Liberty
League Honorable Mention All-Stars sophomore Marco Parisi and junior Trevor Blackwell. After graduating all of their goalkeepers,
the Green and Gold will have a freshman in
net to start the season.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
The Clarkson Women’s Soccer team, led by
third-year head coach Sarah Raymond and
first-year assistants Kelsey Yam and Jeffrey
Gold, looks to continue taking steps toward
becoming an annual contender in the Liberty League, hoping to improve upon its 6-7-3
mark from a year ago with a mixture of youth
and defense.
Returning only one senior and adding 12
freshmen and one transfer student, the team
skews very young. However, the Green and
Gold do not lack experience, with nine returning players earning plenty of starts in 2012.
Led by the return of Liberty League FirstTeam goalkeeper Kim Kenline (Akron, NY),
who ranked 25th in the country last season in
save percentage, the Golden Knights also return their three top scorers from 2012 in Megan Strijek (Schenectady, NY), Anna Demasi
(Colchester, VT), and Jessica Budaj (Windsor,
MA).
The Golden Knights defense, headlined by
Kenline, allowed less than a goal per game last
year, and Strijek led the way with 12 points,
including four goals and four assists.
Clarkson will play 10 home games this year,
opening up with the North Country Classic
against Wellesley College on August 31st. The
regular season wraps up at rival St. Lawrence
University on November 2nd.
