POWER SECTION UPDATE
Last weekend was a very busy time for the Power Section with the YWA CPYC Corica Pastries
State Championship and Teams Event Prize Night hosted by Claremont Yacht Club, the Ray
D Carter Invitation on Saturday and the Norm Cox Trophy (Eun Na Mara/Yimbala) event on
Sunday.
The South of Perth Yacht Club featured prominently at the State Championship and Teams Prize Night with
Skipper Brett Morrison and Navigator Dilana Ramirez on Sunhunter winning the State Championship Trophy
and Brett also won the Graham Cerini Perpetual Trophy for the Best First Year Skipper for 2015. The Runner
up Champion 2015 was won by Skipper Steve Wall and Navigators Sharon Horne and Amanda Watson on
Amazon. They also won the Bob Stanford Pertpetual Trophy for 2015 and the State Time Trialling Teams Event
Winner was the South of Perth Yacht Club.
Congratulations to all the winners and be sure to check out the full story, winners and photos for the season
in the next issue of Soundings magazine.
A huge congratulations to the South of Perth Yacht Club
time triallers who collectively won the State Teams event for 2015.
It appears there were more misdemeanours than event winners at results on Saturday night with new boats
to show off, ropes that weren’t taken off, numbers lost and flags that made the starters see “red” or so they
thought mistaking a new ensign flag on Open Circuit for a protest. The Ray D Carter Invitation race was won
by equal winners Skipper Steve Wall, Navigator Amanda Watson on Amazon and Skipper Brett Morrison and
Navigator Dilana Ramirez on Sunhunter.

POWER SECTION UPDATE
First Place in the Port Fleet went to Skipper Doug Smith and Navigator Ann McCluskey on Reel Time and first
place in the Starboard Fleet was won by Top Knot II Skipper Jim White and Navigator Elly White. Results were
also conducted for the SoPYC winners of the CPYC State Heat #5 congratulations to Skipper Ron Davenport
and Navigator Matthew Lingard on Silhouette and Skipper Tony Walther and Navigator Julie Scrimshaw on
August Moon.

Skippers that “swing both ways” as one flag officer so aptly described it at results, swapped helms for the
Norm Cox Trophy (Eun Na Mara/Yimbala) on Sunday. The morning race was a power time trial skippered by
a yachty and in the afternoon those noisy motor skippers swapped power for sail.
The winner of the Norm Cox Trophy was Dianne Ward and Jason Furnell and the Eun Na Mara was won by
Skipper Dianne Ward on Shades and the Yimbala trophy was won by Jamie Smith skippering M&Ms with
Navigator Maria Cook.
Everyone that participated in this event on the day really enjoyed the experience and the opportunity to
meet fellow club competitors and their families and friends and learn different skills.
Be sure to see the full story and photos for this event in the next issue of Soundings magazine.

CLUB BUSY BEE - SATURDAY 19 SEPTEMBER
THANK YOU TO ALL PARTICIPANTS!
Almost 40 members took part in the Club Busy Bee on Saturday. Members from all sections of the Club
participated in a wide range of activities from replacing damaged carpet tiles through to major grounds, beach
cleaning and re-marking parking bays, kerbs and so on. A particularly energetic team took on the challenging
task of installing additional D fenders to the floating fingers, which prompted a number of wisecracks that
they were “lying down on the job”, as the photo below shows… You can decide for yourself if they were just
admiring the fish or if in reality they were holding up some 9 metres of the unwilling fender material to allow
fixing to the face of the jetty perimeter beam. Job well done by the “Fender Team”, that task was definitely
the definition of hard yakka! Thanks to all members for giving up your
valuable time, we trust that there weren't
too many aches and pains as a result.
Additionally, thanks to the Management
Team and Bosun for all the preparatory work
and the F & B department for keeping us
hydrated and fed.
Finally, a thank you to the members of the
Works Committee who worked hard both in
preparation and on the day.
Chris Paterson, Chairman of Works

OFFSHORE UPDATE
This weekend saw the opening of the Offshore racing season with the first race of the Beneteau Offshore
Series. The George Law race was held in predicted blustery southerly’s that saw the RO select the shortened
heavy weather course to Jervois Bay rather than the full course around Rottnest and Carnac Islands.
The forecast of heavy winds arrived suitably late as the fleets were finishing the race instead of catching them in worsening conditions well out to sea.
The resultant race was in quality winds of 18 – 20 knots in light swell within the Sound and in sunny conditions.
The fleet of 23 included Chris Higham’s Archambault 40 ARGO representing SoPYC’s in Division 2. ARGO had
a good day out leading its division for most of the race until a brain freeze moment on the kite run home saw
the bowman (Warren Erasmus) try a lazy sheet retrieval manoeuvre involving swinging out on a halyard to
the leeward clew of the kite in 20 + knots. Much the delight and merriment of Wasabi who were close on
ARGO’s stern the manoeuvre ended in a variety of dunking’s right side up and upside down and culminated in
a good old fashioned round up as the weight sensitivities of the yacht were taken to the extreme. The dripping
crewman were hauled back on board and promptly renamed Dilmah (see action pic). In the meantime Paul
Arns Wasabi managed to stay focused and sailed off to win the race on both IRC and YAH. ARGO had to settle
for second place on IRC and 4th on YAH and some bankable memories of a day on the ocean. In Division 1
ME3 (renamed CALM) continued its good form under new owner Peter Hickson taking out the IRC whilst old
favourite Finnistere picked up the honours in YAH. In Division 3 Blondie returned to the circuit after a year off
and reclaimed its spot with a win on IRC and in Double-handed Kraken took out the double.
The next race is the Mandurah Return Roland Smith race on October 10 as the opening race for the Quantum
Sails Blue Water and Siska Series.
Next week a full schedule of
the offshore racing season
will be published for those
wishing to plan ahead.

TWILIGHT SAILING 2015/16
The steady increase in twilight sailing participation over the
last few years has not been by chance. It has come from
delivering a unique sailing experience and getting the club
fleets actively involved.
This seasons program is expected to be full with plenty of
racing and socialising.
Twilighters set sail around 6pm every
Wednesday evening from October!
The broader use of the clubs facilities and grounds for special food nights, BBQ’s and the use of the lawns
are also areas of recent discussion.
One of the most successful initiatives over the last few years has been the Fleet Nights where each Twilight
is adopted by a different fleet or special interest group in the club.
Below is the first draft of the Fleet allocations for you to diarise for the coming year.

We know that all but for a few stalwarts,
not everyone can make every Twilight, but
over the last few years we have successfully
involved almost every yacht in the club at
least once in a season, so your target should
be to get out a few times and experience the
sights of Perth waters by night.
